CareerRe: If Given A Complete Freedom To Start Afresh, What Profession Would You Choose? by ogie5(f): 11:03pm On Jun 02, 2011
Ajo Mmuo:
I studied Physics in univ cos I wanted to be a physicist. Knowing what I know now, I would have double majored in Maths and Economics. Followed by a masters in Applied and Computational Maths and cap it up with a PhD in Financial Economics and/or Mathematical Finance and drag an MBA while a PhD student.  After these, I will work for some time and run my own hedge fund and/or private equity firm. Then I will become your president. On completing my 8 year term,  I will become a professor of Finance in naija- just so i will not steal your money and open one of the best secondary school in any city where I live to teach kids. I will be the principal come  maths and economics teacher.  Every evening, I will sit down under a mango tree and read the newspaper with my wife. And life is good,  Now am back from never never land. Was I tangentially off?,  lol,  DREAMS. Pls dont wake me up,
Wow!, I wish studied all u just said, u wld hv been my 'bestest' friend, why d interest in finance and maths though? i'm studying financial economics at the moment, so wld like 2 get some ideas about wat i cld do afterwards

Christianity EtcRe: Now That Want To Be A Christian, Should I Stop Listening To Non-gospel Music? by ogie5(f): 3:00pm On Feb 24, 2011
Googler:
As a Christian, here is the first and foremost thing to avoid: SEX. This is clearly stated in St Paul's emails to the brethren. You can listen to lil wayne, drake, baby bash, ludacris etc. Just stay away from that one and it's one way to heaven when you give up the ghost. Good luck!
i totally disagree with you, when u said the poster can listen to such songs, u'll agree with me that those songs you said she could listen to, promote SEX, hw do u expect her to avoid sex if all she hears from these songs is about SEX, u just contradicted yourself my dear brother!

The lyrics of songs made by the artists you listed would not help her , because, repeatedly hearing something might lead to u believing it and then acting on it! so bro, u should tell her not to listen to those songs if she is to avoid SEX

CareerRe: Can African Professionals Change Africa? by ogie5(f): 2:44am On Nov 12, 2010
Im so happy to see this topic, as it has been what I have been discussing with friends and course mates for most part of the week.

I'ld like to say, YES WE CAN! Africa has got good human capital (i.e educated ppl), both at home and in diaspora. To change Africa:

1. Those(PROFESSIONALS) in diaspora need to think more about coming home, investing in out father/motherland where our skills, experiences, etc are needed.
2. Those at home need to have a new mentality. First things first, we shld change our mentality of 'african time'. How about we all set ourselves challenges for the next few days and endeavour to be 'on time', to work, church, apppointments, etc. Being punctual is a very important skill needed for any change to happen.

, more to come

I studied Mathematics at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Nigeria. The salary is in Naira, and not a conversion. I don't work in a bank, man.

SegzyJoe:
@poster
I disagree fundamentally with some of the above replies. First, studying for the job market will only earn you a meal ticket. Second, studying a course that you love and is compactible with your purpose in life make you a fulfilled person. You can study a course that will drive your passion to be what you want to become or a course that will get you a job but will take away your happiness. You need to look in-ward and see a course that is compactible with your passion and area of interest, it is then that you can find both the meal ticket and fulfillment in life.

By the way, there are some disciplines that are hot cake in the market today but will become liability in the nearest future. Technology changes the way we do things in this modern age, but when you study a course that is your area of interest, you will always find fulfillment in life.

Some people study some discipline for prestige reasons, a course that has nothing to do with their life and they end up being the second best in life. They may struggle but it will only make them second best. In view of this, if your area of interest in life is Geography or Sociology or whatever, please don't hesitate, follow your dreams. Studying for Nigeria market is particularly dangerous, because the evidence on ground did not support that theory again. Today, most bankers are Engineering based graduates, some banks sometimes conduct special recruitment for Management based graduates, because majority of the people that passed aptitude test are Engineering graduates, as such to have professionals grounded in the nitty gritty of the banking profession they recruits Econs, Acct, Finance graduate to supplement with special consideration.

The fact in Nigeria today is that there are graduates of Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, English and French languages in the banking industry today. By and large don't allow environment to affect you. look inward study a course you are confortable with, it is better to be a Nobel Laureate in Street Sweeping than to be a second best in Physics, the two can not stand on the same pedastal, coming first is first anywhere.

@ogie 5 I am in my final year at uni doing accounting and economics i think you should do what you love i have a mate who loved maths during a levels and he went on to do it at uni despite getting a D at a level maths but he has stuck to it and he is not doing bad.
And I must say economics is a very interesting subject but its also harder at uni just ensure you do it at a levels so it will make your life easier at uni especially in your 1st year which will be a ride in the park
cos at uni you are on your own no lecturers to explain to you like it was in a levels
last time i did economics was in nigeria, means i have a lot to study on my own b4 uni, thanks for letting me know that

Kx:
My first response is to ur comment :"Uk is in recession while Nigeria economy is growing"
Did u reach such conclusion with media indices or with what?
i was told/found out nigeria's economy still has a long way to go, so demand for economists may be high
Nigeria's got no working infrastucture to support growth unlike the UK yet nigeria economy is adjugded to be in growth shocked

Do ur maths and eco with passion all d same.U never knows, how many ppl earn a living with their first degree
certificate.Good thing is,with ur maths background,at the end of the day,u may c d need to zero in on IT or some other pro.
Good luck
thanks a lot

ehie007:
with maths u av so many options to diversify, if u want to go into I.T all u nid to do is to add some professional exams, u can work anywere with mathematics,
thats true

I studied Mathematics, had a First Class Honours Degree (Magna Cum Laude) whats magna cum laude?
and work for a multinational company, where I get about N450K monthly thats a lot, congrats. I've only worked for about a year. Mathematics is much broader in times of prospects than Economics. I'm surprised that Nigerian graduates still see graduates of Mathematics as teachers-to-be! Mathematics opens you up to detailed objective analysis of real life situations.

However, I'll advise you to take some courses as minor. It could get boring and challenging sometimes, especially from the second year when you begin Real and Complex Analysis, Measure Theory, Number Theory, Probability Theory and so on. i am so lost For me, I took 7 courses in applied statistics and they've been immensely useful to me. A higher degree in finaces, economics and all sorts require a very deep understanding of undergraduate mathematics.

I wish you the best. thanks a lot
which uni did u study at, r u working in nigeria atm or is the 450k a conversion to naira?

wow wow wow smiley i dont even know where to start. i really appreciate ur efforts , thanks a lot for the comments. i really love maths and its the only subject i think i can do without getting bored easily, on the other hand, i heard maths at uni is a different ball game from that at A levels which is making me scared, i was told it was more abstract and one does not deal with as much numbers as A level maths. on the other hand, i'm not doing Economics at the moment but the unis say i dont need to do it before uni, im a little skeptical about that

deoye05:
NO MAKE THEM PUSH YOU O. MATHS + ECONOMICS you wan kill your self? courses easy to choose but to do am na wahala o.
i studied Economics in school and it was very interesting. i dont know how interesting its going to be for you. but if you can play with figures, not maths now but manupulate figures as in equations and you are also good in theories, then you should be able to handle economics cool
lol, true talk

Ibime:
Don't talk about what you don't know!  angry

Guy, Maths is easier than Economics. If you want to get a 1st, go for Maths anytime. I also did Maths with Economics, and the Economics side of things nearly wrecked my chances of a 1st. With Maths, you either have a 'yes' or 'no' answer, hence it is easier to predict and forecast your grade. With Economics, you are doing mostly theory, so you can never predict your score and your grade is more subject to the lecturers feelings and political views.  As for the Nigerian job market, it doesn't matter which you study as long as you shine. What matters is your extracurricular learning. If you are interested in finance, go to http://www.informedtrades.com/f197/ and start learning the basics, otherwise check out their lectures on youtube. Just take your time and decide what you want. Alternatively, if you are interested in handling peoples savings, why not study Actuarial Science?
thanks, i will definitely check the site. how did u find the maths and which country did u study? is maths at uni very different from college maths as i heard?

Ibime:
Why not do Maths with Economics?
i applied for maths with economics and i've got my offers already, the thing is i heard maths is difficult at uni and i dont want to do a course that might reduce my chance of getting a 2:1 or better still a 1. cheers

kiwi992:
Hi,

Maths hands down, anytime, anywhere.

Sod the Economics!  Look at the state of the global economy.  What have the Economists done to save us, except to theorise.  Oh yeah, try this, try that and see which macro-economic tool works.  Quantitative easing 'an all.  What a bloody joke!
Maths - in UK and Nigeria for me.  More opportunities would be open to you with a degree in Maths.  Oh yeah, also add the PGCE to it once you've graduated 'cos you never know, you might not quite like it in Nigeria and would be wanting to go back to the UK where teachers in such disciplines are in high demand.  Turn on your TV and you'll see what I mean.

Ensure you make a 1 or 2.1

kiwi992.
true the economy in the uk at present is in recession, but i realised that nigeria's economy is still growing and the demand for economists might be high. i really want a 2:1 or 1 at uni and from what i've heard, maths is a lot of work at uni. also heard economics has to do with a lot of maths at uni especially Bsc degrees, so im thinking of combining it with finance or accounting just in case.
