Education / How To Write A Personal Statement For A Master's Program by ogzille(m): 6:53pm On Jun 03, 2023
Getting your master's application approved is obviously the most critical part of your master's program. And with how competitive some universities are, preparing your application appropriately is one way to ensure it is approved.

This guide is designed to walk you through getting your master’s application approved through your personal statement. So, while going through this article, you will get to know:

What a personal statement is.
Why you need a personal statement for your master's application.
What should be included in your personal statement.
How to write a personal statement
How long a personal statement should be
Examples of a personal statement.

What is a Personal Statement?

A personal statement is a representation of you. It is a document that lets the admission committee know who you are and why you should be admitted into the institution. It gives the school an insight into what your motivation is for applying to their school and gives you a chance to get selected.

With a personal statement, you prove your work and worth. You show the school that you have done your research and you have what it takes to thrive in their school and with the course. All of these you must show with concrete examples and proof of experience. That is what a personal statement is.

Why is a Personal Statement required for your master's application?
Your master’s application isn’t one that is going to be done in person. The admission committee isn’t going to meet you before they decide if you can get admitted or not. Your personal statement is required to give the committee a glimpse of who you are and what you can do.

A personal statement is needed because you get to show your expertise and interests. You also get to show your potential during and after the program. With this, you can convince the committee to give you a chance in their institution. This is why you need a personal statement; to get the committee to meet you before they meet you.

What should be included in a Personal Statement?
Knowing how important a personal statement is, what should be included? Here are the most important components of a well-written personal statement that will help yours stand out.

A Personal Story
A personal story is an important component of your statement. It is even more vital because it is peculiar to you. That is your first leverage. No one else has your story, your unique abilities and your unique experiences. And that is the power your personal story has. Your task then is to tell that story in a compelling way that will enable them to see you for you.

Usually, it is better to think of a significant experience that has contributed to your person and incorporate it into your statement. With it, you can craft a beautiful opening statement for your essay. This is why it is advisable to write your personal statement by yourself and to tailor each statement for each application.

Your Values
Next to your story are your values. The committee wants to know what kind of person you are and how it affects what you do. What values and principles guide your life? What do you hold in high esteem? What can’t you compromise on? These are the things they would want to know because your values define you.

Also, as much as you want to talk about your values, show, don’t tell. Don’t just insert words you think they want to see. Show them how you have imbibed these values and when they came in handy. Tell a story of when you had to showcase these values in your life and how things turned out. That is a better way to talk about your values.

Your Motivations
Why. That’s what your motivation defines. When the admission committee goes through your personal statement, they want to know why you are choosing this career path or why you are taking this route. And this is also another important component of your personal statement because it explains to them what is inspiring you to take action.

When writing your motivations, be sure that it isn’t something superficial. Your motivations must have a deep sense of meaning. Your why cannot be because you want to travel around the world or you just want to change your environment. It has to be deeper than that. So, it is important you take your time to define your why before sending in your application.

Your Skills and Interests
Another major component of your personal statement is your skills and interests. Talking about the skills you have developed over time and how they can be beneficial to the program is also very important. Your set of skills and interests also show how you will be able to succeed in the program, especially if it is a competitive environment.

This is another component that will require you don’t tell, but you show. Don’t talk about your skills by just inserting them. Talk about how you have used them, how you have grown them and also how you intend to utilize them in the new environment. All these help make you a good fit for your master’s program.

Why You Chose the Program and School
There are lots of other universities or institutions you can apply to for your master's. There are also other programs you can go for. Why you chose the program and the institution are vital components of your personal statement.

The admission committee wants to know how this program you have chosen will ultimately impact society. Answering this shows that you will be willing and committed to doing the work required in this field of study. Also including why you chose the school lets them know that you are not just applying, but you are specific about what you want.

Your Goals for the Future
Another important component you need for your application is your goals and aspirations for the future. What do you hope to achieve with your program? What plans do you have for the future and how does this program fit into it? When you are able to include this in your statement, you show that this program will be contributing greatly to your future and plans as a person.

How to Write a Personal Statement
After you have organized the components for your personal statement, then you can write. Here is how to write a personal statement.

Start on Time
If you are going to have a good personal statement, you must start early. Your personal statement can make or break your application. So you can’t rush it. Start on time to plan out how you would write your personal statement. What would be included and what would not? This will help you have an organized document.

Read the Guidelines Thoroughly
To have a great personal statement, it is important you read through the application guidelines properly. Some persons miss out on critical information because they didn’t read through the guidelines. Read through to be sure you are not missing out on anything.

Research the Institution
Putting in the work to research an institution shows that you are interested in having a unique personal statement. Every institution has its own unique values and culture. Looking into the school and even the admission committee helps you know how to write a personal statement that will stand out amongst others.

Have a strong opening statement
A strong opening statement keeps your reader glued to your work. It sparks their interest and makes them want to read more and know more about you. Losing the reader in your opening statement makes you run the risk of not being accepted. The stronger the opening statement, the higher the chances of your application being accepted.

Have a Good Structure
Before you write your personal statement, take out time to write out the structure you want for your statement. Your personal statement should follow a logical, methodical structure, where each paragraph follows from the one before. Make sure paragraphs are short, succinct, clear and to the point.

Maintain a Professional Tone
While writing your statement, try as much as you can to maintain a professional tone. The admission committee is not your friend. So, in as much as you want to warm up to them and sound convincing, remember to keep the tone official. This way, you keep your head on what is more important.

Proofread Accurately
When you are done writing, you must take time to proofread your work accurately. Having errors on your personal statement is never a good look. It gives a bad first impression about you to the school. Take time to proofread your work before sending it in. and you can achieve this if you begin your writing early.

On the other hand, there are certain things you must avoid while writing your personal statement. Some of them are:

Do not lie or exaggerate in your personal statement. Keep the facts as they are and do not say things that are not true. If the university checks you out and realises you lied, it could have bad repercussions in the future.

Do not include irrelevant information in your personal statement. You may want to make it exciting to read but avoid including details about you that are not needed.

Avoid using the same personal statement for different applications. You must be able to tailor your statement to each unique university.

Avoid begging or appearing to be pleading in your personal statement. Begging makes you come off to the committee as being needy which is not a good look for you. Present your reason to be selected but do not beg.

Avoid repeating information found elsewhere in your application. Repeating information makes you seem boring to the admission committee.

Don’t use short forms in your application. It is an official document and you must keep it that way. Avoid short forms in your personal statement.

How long should a Personal Statement be?
Your personal statement should not be longer than 500 words, which is about an A4 paper size. This means that you should keep your statement as concise as possible. 30 words per sentence and 5 - 7 paragraphs at most in total. Also, use clear language to make it easy to read for anyone who would be scanning through. This way, you can have a winning personal statement.

If you are looking to become an international student, read through the article to find out about these countries and also get answers to questions you may have about the study environment of these countries.

Here are some of the best countries to consider for studying abroad and why we think so. In no particular order, they are:

Singapore
Germany
Netherlands
Finland
Switzerland
France
New Zealand
Ireland
Italy
Spain
Poland
Australia
Canada
USA
UK

Singapore

Singapore is one of the countries in Asia that provides many opportunities for personal and professional growth. It places a high value on education, thereby creating a system that makes it relatively affordable and attainable. International students are greatly welcomed and are a part of Singapore’s economy.

Here are other reasons you should consider studying in Singapore:

English is the official language in Singapore, so communication will not be a challenge.

Singapore is ranked as one of the safest places in the world.

The nation has highly-ranked universities such as the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Management University (SMU).

Tuition in Singapore is about $11,000 for undergraduate programs and about $45,074 for graduate programs, depending on your course of study.

In Singapore, students can work for up to 16 hours during school periods and unlimited hours during vacation periods.

While working, students can earn up to $800 - $1000 monthly, especially if their work is related to their field of study.

After school, international students can apply for a Long-term Visit Pass which enables them to stay in Singapore for another year if they don’t get a job immediately. Students who however secure a job within this time are issued a Work Pass which enables them to work.

The success rate of Singapore visas is about 85 - 90%.

With the right and complete documents, Student Pass (visa) can be issued within 15 days to 1 month. However, students are advised to apply on time as physical interviews may mean the visa would take months.

Germany

Germany is often a choice amongst students who are seeing international education. Also, due to the country’s top-quality education system and infrastructure, it is ranked as a top destination in the world for global students.

Here are some of the reasons students consider Germany for international education:

Despite the fact that German is also spoken in Germany, students can learn all their courses in the English language.

Germany offers low or in some cases, no tuition fee at all for international students. Decided by the government in 2014, international students only have to pay administrative fees of $110 - $390 in most public universities which makes it easily cheap and affordable.

Students are permitted to work for about 20 hours a week or even 120 full days every year. More than 60% of the international students in Germany work part-time while in school.

Scholarship programs like DAAD are always available to international students that want to study in private institutions.

Germany is a great country for different engineering programs.

After school, graduates can apply for an 18-month resident permit if they do not get a job immediately. This way, they can apply for jobs and stay longer in the country when they get a job.

German university graduates have a high level of employability in the world.

Getting a study visa to Germany makes you eligible to visit 26 other Schengen countries for up to 90 days continuously legally.

The success rate of German visas is about 92%, but students are advised to start early. With the necessary documents, visas can be issued to international students without stress.
