Post ASUU Strike: Differences Are Settled, UNIJOS Resumes Right Now The authorities and the lecturers of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) have resolved their differences, paving way for the resumption of classes. According to NAN, the lecturers at the varsity did not return to classes even after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) officially terminated its almost six-month-long strike, citing “local issues”. The authorities at the university did their best to settle the disputes caused, in particular, by the errors in the payment of allowances. “The school is on; lecturers are in classes and we are only expecting new students because the old ones are already here and in session,” the university’s Assistant Registrar (Information) Steve Otowo confirmed in Jos on January 9, 2014, Thursday. He also added that the two bodies have ironed out their differences and have resolved to work together“especially in the interest of the students”. Meanwhile, local students have commended the lecturers and the management over the quick resolution of the issues, and explained that the development had demonstrated their resolve to put the students’ interest above every other consideration. “We are happy to be back to classes; we are happy that management and the lecturers had made our interest a priority,” the President of Students Union Government (SUG) in UNIJOS, Mr. Ajik Magaji, said. The SUG President called on students to immediately return to school, and appealed to them to be of good conduct. He also advised them to make optimum use of their time in order to cover the time lost during the six months of the strike. FINALLY!!! |

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Hayward Mafuyai, made the fact known in Jos on Friday when he briefed newsmen on the research activities of the institution. He said that the award was given based on the university’s entry in the call by the bank for research initiatives from African universities. “We competed with about 52 universities in Africa and we were lucky to win the grant. “The grant was given to the university to conduct researches to produce modern drugs from plants in Africa “The grant will be used to conduct researches on different leaves, roots and plants so as to extract their medicinal contents for the use of human beings. “The team of researchers from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science will carry out the research “The money will be released to the researchers in phases so as to complete the work without hitches, “ he said The vice-chancellor also said that the university emerged as the best in the category of universities in the country during the second Education Innovation Exhibition announced in Abuja on Wednesday, Nov. 13. He said that “the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Science and Technology organised the exhibition. “The team of researchers from the university has produced some drugs for the use of Nigerians. “Our researchers have produced anti-hypertension, anti-diabetes, anti-malaria drugs and anti snake venom. “We have sent the newly developed drugs to some overseas universities for further verification on their potency,“ he said Mafuyai said that the institution had also signed a Memorandum (MoU) of Understanding with the university of Cape- Coast in Ghana to train its staff. “The MOU is signed for initial three year duration for the purpose of omithology: to develop and carry out conservation based training,“ he said. ASUU STRIKE WILL SOON BE CALLED OF ![]() The Four months old industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU may soon be called off. This follows indications from recent closed door meeting held yesterday between the supervising minister and minister of state for education, Barr Nyesom Wike and a team of the universities striking lecturers led by the union president, Dr Isa Fagge. Members of the academic union emerged from the meeting with visible smiles and clearly stated revival of relationship between the union and the federal government. However, the details of the meeting were not disclosed as members of ASUU were escorted by the supervising minister of education, to ensure that the members of the union did not address the press. Earlier this week, the minister also met with vice chancellors of public owned universities in a closed door meeting, and details of the meeting was not equally disclosed. |
