Science is not limited, neither is the human mind. We deliberately refuse to find answers to our questions.
I respectfully disagree. It is not due to deliberate refusal to find answers. Why on earth would man deliberately refuse to find answers to his own problems? In fact, man has been doing his best. He has been on the constant search for knowledge right from his creation. He has made lots of researches and has performed lots of experiments. It is no doubt that man had solved difficult puzzles, some of which we are still benefiting their result today. However, many questions still remained unanswered to this day. The truth is, Man's environment is bigger than he can see or touch which makes some of his questions difficult for science to clearly provide answers. Why is it still difficult to understand the origin of life even though too many theories had already been put in place? Why would science say that it is difficult to define life? Why is science yet to boast of making just a unicellular organism of its own? well, perhaps with time, science may prove us wrong during which time, answers to all questions will be on our finger tips. Until then, all we can see right now is our limited science.

Yea in addition the lymphatic vessels propel lymph via intrinsic pumping mechanism (periodic contraction of smooth muscle cells at the wall of the vessel) unlike the veins which depend majorly on extrinsic pumping mechanism (contraction of external adjacent tissues). The lymphatic vessels just like the veins also have valves that prevent retrograde flow. But a removed lymph node(perhaps to reduce the tendency for cancerous cells to metastasize to other parts of the body) could lead to lymphoedema (swelling of the tissues due to accumulation of extravasated fluid from the blood capillaries to the interstitial space); this demonstrates how little we know about the transport mechanism.

Yea but it still begs the question why does the right lymphatic duct receive fewer tributaries (if i may use your terminology) as against the thoracic duct?, why is it asymmetric( why should only the right top quadrant drain into the right lymphatic duct, why not part of the lower quadrant and on and on....)? .
It is because all the lymph from the lower half of the body already empties into the thoracic duct and non is left to drain into the right lymphatic duct. It is good to be inquisitive. But if u want to know why the little finger has decided to be smaller and medial to the ring finger, I think the one who made them so should explain better
EducationRe: The medical students and aspirants thread by OJABS1: 10:08pm On Feb 26, 2017
masperano:
No idea.. My research work is about formulating models to describe the transport mechanism of the lymphatic vessels. How do lymphatic vessels propel lymph up against gravity without any central pump like the heart?....
Logically, I would say that because the superficial lymphatic vessels follow veins and deep ones follow artery, the mechanism involved in the movement of lymph (especially the superficial ones) against gravity can be likened to that of venous drainage since their course are the same. Have u also wandered why venous blood, though a low pressure blood still drains to the heart against gravity? Some of the reasons are due to the valves present in veins which are also found in lymphatic ducts as well as the venous plexuses that are located in strategic positions in the body. These veins are embedded within muscles whose contractions help to propel blood against gravity. E.g of such plexuses are those found deep to the soleus of the calf as well as the pterygoid venous plexus of the head and neck. Here, the soleus and the pterygoid muscles respectively serve as peripheral hearts because there contraction help to propel blood against gravity to the heart.
To your second question, remember that the thoracic duct is the largest lymphatic ducts in the body. Apart from the fact that it is the continuation of the cisterna chyli, it also receives several tributaries in the thorax before inclining to the left to drain into the left subclavian vein. Unlike the thoracic duct, the right lymphatic duct which is smaller and is to the right only receives fewer tributaries before draining to the right subclvian vein.

It is a gud thing that u have such a passion to study mbbs because that is what will eventually keep u going when u soon find urself in dis aspect of life called medicine. My advice is simple: Let go every worries n distractions and face dis physiology with all seriousness, seeing it as a route to arrive at ur dream course. Write jamb alongside if u want and most importantly, trust God in all ur steps. Be consistent in all of these. Then we will sure hear testimonies from u bro

Calm down bro. U bother too much. The world has advanced and has gone past time when u have to choose a life career only for it lucrative purpose. It is one thing to get a highly paid job, it is another to remain in it. It is gud to desire a lucrative job, but it requires more than just a profit to continue in it. Most ppl eventually regret d job they find themselves in because of the wrong mindset they started with. U have opted for a course u don't seem to know much about. Don't u think u now rushed it? What happens if u are given physiology and all ur expectations about d course become d other way round? Easy bro. First thing first. It would have been better if ur worries were appropriately applied. Dream big about ur career. I think It is u who can make it lucrative and no one else.

Guys abeg other than hepatitis what can cause bloating of the abdomen?
Bloated abdomen can also b caused by excessive deposition of fats (triglyceride) around the abdominal region, a condition very common with people that consume large quantity of alcohol. This is so because d body cells are very efficient in their metabolic activity and work in such a way as to avoid nutrients lost. So when large quantity of alcohol is consumed over and above the amount required to meet up the body's energy demand, some of the end products are converted and stored as fats (mostly within the greater omentum) as they enter the TCA cycle in order to be used during period of reduced energy supply such as starvation.
You can also surf the net for more causes.

I'd like to know if there are members of this forum that got admitted to medical school via IJMB and what university you applied to, and also is there a cut off point required for medical school.

I'm considering enrolling for the IJMB program. What advice would you give me?
Remember to also write utme. It increases ur chances.

1. Ankyloglossia(tongue-tie)
2. It is mostly congenital and hereditary.
3. Severe pain and oral/speech problems.
4. Pain and difficulty in breasfeeding and mobility of the tongue.
5. Will refer to a dental/pediatric surgeon.
Good job bro. I like your views. 1 & 2 are now settled already. But your number 4 answer is actually part of number 3.
(3) Makes breast feeding difficult. May also lead to difficulty in speech.
(4) The condition is of no functional significance.
(5) I would had referred the mother to the pediatrician for good counselling which should also include adequate feeding for the child until the condition gets better. The reason is, since condition is mostly characterized by short lingual frenulum around the tip of the tongue, short frenulum stretches with time by itself, making the surgical correction of this anomaly unnecessary (hence a dental surgeon is not necessarily needed).
More views are still welcome (if any). Nice attempt.

This question may sound weird and i dont really know how to put it,
Since whatever we see with our eyes are inverted, therefore does it mean the real world around us is inverted and the eye makes it look upright or are we upside down and the force of gravity is keeping us stablestable.
I hope you all understand the question and give me positive feedbacks.
Your question is quite lucid and thoughtful.
Just like the first guy wrote, it is actually not the eye that makes an object looks upright, it is the function of the brain. The image of every object we see with our eyes is focused on the retina as inverted both laterally and from up to down. The information is sent to the brain in this form so that the brain will do the correct interpretation. This means that without the brain to perform this function, every object will appear to be inverted. Therefore, the real world around us is not inverted but is just the way we see it because our brains have learnt to interpret the images of objects the way the objects really are.

Hahaha...I think if it was to be a small fish, the question would have specified as in the case of 'tadpole'.Moreover, it is more likely for a man to feed on fish than on weeds, tadpole or beetle. So fish has to immediately precede man to make it more rational. So I also go with option A

As for me, I truly enjoyed every bit of arguments and attempts to give special recognition to our individual professions. I like it when I see people trying to express their minds. It's nothing new. Even a cobbler who is happy and proud of his job would want to convince a banker that his job is by far better than banking or any other lucrative job he can ever imagine. If we must do our jobs well, then we must cherish them more than any other. For It is not a crime to cherish your profession.
However, in as much as we do our best to love our jobs, we should also endeavor to respect and appreciate other people's professions. That is called "maturity". Nigerian health sector is already suffering a setback and gradually approaching her collapse. Discrimination among medical and paramedical practitioners is the order of the day, and the major factor contributing to the problem of our health sector. It is often in Nigeria u hear or see health workers ganging up and asking unnecessary questions. For example– Why should a nurse earns more than a pharmacist? Or why should the government increase the monthly salary of the med. lab. Scientists neglecting the doctors? Oya let's embark on an indefinite industrial action, for that is the language the Federal government understands (It's a big shame and a threat to our health sector). If this continues, the public health may come to a stand still.
I am not surprise anyway, because many are there only to feed their pot bellies. I believe, there are still very few who really want to add value to their generation. And so, if we must have a better health sector, then we must fight for it now by concentrating on our works and not that of others. If the Nigerian health sector must move forward, then all her health workers must see themselves as one, for we are all specially unique and uniquely special in our individual specialities. The earlier we realize this, the better will be our health sector.

Good evening house.
I have two questions that's been bothering me..
So I'm letting it out here...
1) why do the most intelligent ones from high school seem to always go for medicine.?
The reason is obvious. People always see medicine as the most lucrative of all (this is not true). Though some reasons may still vary with individuals, however, most intelligent students will want to go for medicine because they believe it is d ONLY way for an intelligent student like them to make QUICK and HUGE success in life(dis one too na big lie!)...Many intelligent doctors out there would ve done far better if they had ventured into other fields...You don't go into medicine because u are intelligent. That is why the desire to make it quick in life has a way of pushing one into making wrong choices that may eventually amount to regrettable outcomes..
In this life, I belief, no matter the work u do, no matter the impression or the belief of people about that work u do, it is u who can make it different, it is u who can make it valuable and it is still u who can change the impression of the world about it. whether we like it or not, people will always have their belief...But what really matters is not how d people view it, rather it is hw u view it, because it is u who will do the work yourself and not the people .
