Mr. Tim was diagnosed with hypertension 5 years ago. It was a sad news for him because he had to readjust almost every part of life to keep his blood pressure under control according to his doctor. This meant paying attention to what he ate and drank; it also meant he had to stop taking alcohol and smoking--the two things he used to cool off the stress of work. In addition, he was to swallow at least three pills (antihypertensive medications) every day for the rest of his life. For 5 years, he maintained his doctor's instructions. His very loving wife played a crucial role in helping him adjust to this new life. Both in their late 50s, Mr. Tim's wife made sure he ate the right food; she reminded him to take his antihypertensive medications if he was about to forget; she accompanied him to the hospital whenever he had an appointment with the doctor. Mr. Tim lost his wife in a car accident while she travelled to their family home in the village. This broke him. For weeks after his wife's burial, Mr. Tim did not bother to take his antihypertensive medications; he went back to drinking alcohol and smoking. One morning while he was about standing up from his bed, Mr. Tim had this sudden, severe headache and then collapsed and passed out. It was the house cleaner who found him lying on the floor and rushed him to the hospital. After the doctors at the emergency department rushed to administer emergency treatment, Mr. Tim woke up but could not speak; the left side of his face, including that side of his mouth, was weak; his left arm and leg were so weak that he could not move them on the bed he was lying on. What Mr. Tim had was a stroke. Stroke is basically what happens to specific parts of the body when the blood supply to a part of the brain is significantly reduced or totally cut off and this lasting more than 24 hours. The brain cells depend on oxygen and nutrients in blood to survive; once this supply is tampered with, the brain cells in the part affected starts dying within minutes and so do the body functions controlled by that part of the brain. There are two types of stroke. The only person qualified to deal with matters of the vagina is a medical doctor called a gynaecologist. There is nothing about giving glory to God in whatever you are selling. You are not a medical doctor and so whatever lie you are selling to people is a criminal act that is punishable under the law guiding medical practice in Nigeria plenty9316: |
If a woman feels she has an infection like she notices a foul smelly discharge from the vagina, then the only and best thing to do is to visit a medical doctor called a gynaecologist. She should never go to any herbal or root medicine person to prevent her from complicating her problem plenty9316: |
Please stop all this. The woman's vagina is a self-cleaning organ and does not require any roots and herbs; in fact putting roots and herbs into the vagina is very dangerous for the woman's health. I'm a medical doctor and I know this because I have studied it and I'm in the best expert position to educate you on this. |
Pregnancy is a normal condition, but many factors can make it abnormal both for the mother and the unborn baby. One of such factors is drugs. Pregnancy is a very delicate period because that is when the foundation of a new life is laid. Drugs are chemical compounds which can be poisonous to life at this early phase in the womb because many drugs can cross the placenta from the mother's blood and enter the blood circulation of the unborn baby. This is the reason doctors advise that pregnant women avoid taking drugs unless there is a very strong indication for it and a doctor has assessed the woman to prescribe the medications. No matter how harmless a drug may sound, like vitamin supplements, every pregnant woman should ask her doctor before taking them. Some medications exert much of their harmful effects at certain stages in pregnancy so taking a seemingly harmless one like a vitamin may cause harm if the pregnancy is at the stage where this supplement has the greatest potential of being harmful. Also, being guided by a doctor about taking a needed medication while pregnant will ensure the woman takes such a medication for the medically recommended duration and at the right dosage to prevent taking it longer than recommended or taking an overdose. While the ideal objective is to avoid drugs throughout pregnancy for the sake of the unborn baby, there are situations that may require the woman to take medications and some medications have been found to be beneficial to the healthy development of crucial areas in the baby such as the brain and the spinal cord. Many people do this all the time: inserting cotton buds into their ears to clean supposed dirt in them. Parents buy these cotton buds and, among other things, use them to clean their children's ears. Moreover, a lot of people find the tingling, pleasurable sensation that comes with this act and the gratification of having cleaned their ears irresistible. Is there any medical benefit attached to inserting a cotton bud into the ears to clean them? The answer is no. Your ears are self-cleaning, meaning no routine cleaning with a cotton bud, matchstick, broomstick, car key or any other object is required. You should also know that the presence of that sticky or dry brown substance in your ear is not a sign of poor personal hygiene. This substance is called an earwax (doctors call it cerumen). Earwax is produced in the outer third of the ear canal. It is a mixture of a gel-like chemical substance secreted by special tissues (glands) in this part of the ear and worn out skin cells from the surface of the outer ear canal Click here to read the rest https://www.kangpe.com/tip/view/221/Keep-Cotton-Buds-Away-from-Your-Ears?utm_source=nairaland&utm_campaign=tip_share&utm_medium=website&type=tip_share |
Almost everyone is aware of obesity in adults and the resulting health implications if nothing is done; some people may have heard about obesity in children. But many people don't know that a baby in the womb can have a weight larger than normal for his or her pregnancy age; something that can be referred to as obesity but in newborn babies. How do doctors know that the weight of a baby in the womb is larger than normal? They do so by checking the baby's weight at birth. There is a range of normal weight gain for each pregnancy week as the baby grows and develops in the mother's womb. The same applies at birth: the normal healthy range for the weight of a baby at birth is between 2.5kg and 4kg. Any baby weighing below 2.5kg at birth is said to have a low birth weight which is caused by many conditions. When the birth weight of a baby is above 4kg, that baby is described by doctors as being large for his or her age and they call this condition macrosomia. You probably would have come across a picture of a big newborn baby. You can choose to see it as a newborn baby having obesity. A baby with a larger than normal birth weight shows that some things were not in the right state in the mother before and/or during her pregnancy with the baby. Conditions that are likely to lead to the birth of an obese baby include: Read more here https://www.kangpe.com/tip/view/220/Can-A-Newborn-Baby-Have-Obesity?utm_source=nairaland&utm_campaign=tip_share&utm_medium=website&type=tip_share |
Do you understand how cholesterol is formed in the body and how it affects the blood vessels in different parts of the body? Click on the link in my original post to read more to get educated on what you don't know about cholesterol and your health; patients have died following a sudden heart attack and at autopsy, we discovered that the blood vessels supplying their heart muscle tissue were blocked by blood clots that resulted from the rupture of the wall of the vessels due to fatty deposits caused by very high blood cholesterol. I'm a certified licensed medical doctor who trained at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan and the University College Hospital Ibadan. |
Most people are aware of the importance of having a healthy blood sugar level, especially those with a family history of diabetes (someone in the family has diabetes mellitus). But a lot of people are not aware that their blood cholesterol is equally important as it plays a role in the development of diabetes, heart attack, stroke, chronic kidney disease and disease of the blood vessels known as peripheral vascular disease. This is because a high blood cholesterol increases the risk of plaques (fatty deposits) building up within the tissue lining the lumen of the blood vessels (arteries) and these plaques can balloon out to narrow or block these vessels anywhere in the body, contributing to the disease conditions mentioned above. While you can check your blood sugar at home with a portable medical device known as a glucometer, you can only get to know whether your blood cholesterol is high or normal by going to the hospital for a blood test in the lab. If you are above 18 years, it is advised you check your blood cholesterol every 5 years; while men above 40 and women above 50 are advised to check theirs every 3 years. The doctor may recommend checking your blood cholesterol more often than the this recommended once every 3 or 5 years if your first test shows you have a higher than normal level (because a high level increases the risk of developing heart disease) and your medical history further indicates you have a high risk of heart disease (from family history of heart attack, stroke, diabetes to having lifestyle behaviours such as cigarette smoking and lack of physical exercise). The blood cholesterol test is known as lipid profile in the hospital and is usually recommended for those presenting to a doctor for the first time with symptoms of diabetes mellitus. If you have not checked your blood cholesterol in the last 5 years, you can walk into any good hospital to see a doctor for this test. A complete blood cholesterol test (lipid profile) involves checking the level of 4 types of fats in your blood which are Read more here https://www.kangpe.com/tip/view/219/Controlling-Your-Blood-Cholesterol-Level-Is-Very-Important?utm_source=nairaland&utm_campaign=tip_share&utm_medium=website&type=tip_share |
Fibroids hardly interfere or prevent conception (the fertilisation of an ovulated egg by sperm cell). The probability of infertility (the inability to achieve conception by a couple after one full year after regular, unprotected, penetrative, vaginal sexual intercourse) resulting from a fibroid is very very low (around 2%); in fact, when we talk about infertility in obstetrics and gynaecology, fibroids are never attributed as a cause because studies have not shown them to cause infertility but to interfere with pregnancy (8 to 10% of pregnancies) ONLY after conception has occurred. You can click on the link in the original post to read further. |
Fibroids can shrink on their own depending on their sizes because they arise due to the action varying hormonal levels and other factors in the woman (such as her genetic makeup, her race, when she first saw her menses---we have studied all these); they also disappear after menopause when the woman's hormone--oestrogen--falls significantly. However, if the woman develops worrisome symptoms from fibroids, we advise them to see their obstetrician and gynaecologist for treatment which can be with drugs or surgery. I'm a College of Medicine, University of Ibadan and University College Hospital, Ibadan (UCH) trained medical doctor; we doctors have studied fibroids and know the various mechanisms of their development and the right treatment for them. Fibroids are not treated with herbs; herbs damage the liver and kidneys. Please stop telling people that some so-called natural and pure herbal medicine cures fibroids when you don't understand the mechanisms of fibroids. Once again, herbs damage the liver and kidneys many years after taking them, and they don't cure fibroids. And it is only medical doctors who are licensed to treat health conditions. |
A fibroid is a harmless tumour of the womb. It is harmless meaning that a woman can have a fibroid and not be aware of it (manifest any symptoms) throughout her reproductive life. Fibroid arises from the tissue of the womb and can occur at different locations in the womb: fibroids can develop just under the tissue lining the wall of the cavity of the womb, protruding into this cavity; they can occur within the muscular wall of the womb; and they can develop on the outside wall of the womb where they stick out like balls on the surface of the womb. Fibroids commonly occur in women in their 30s and 40s; fibroids hardly occur in women during the adolescent years. As a woman, you have a higher risk of having fibroids during your reproductive years if you are black (your race), are obese, have a family history of fibroid (your mom or grandmother had fibroid), saw your first menstrual period at a younger age (at the age of 7 or 8 ), or you consume red meat a lot and take less of green vegetables Read more here:https://www.kangpe.com/tip/view/218/Does-Fibroid-Affect-the-Fertility-of-a-Woman?utm_source=nairaland&utm_campaign=tip_share&utm_medium=website&type=tip_share |
women only need to follow the instructions written in the article. They don't need any herb remedy in their private part as that can predispose them to infection---I'm Dr. Okechukwu Amako, a University of Ibadan trained medical doctor |
The private part is both an important and sensitive area of the body in both men and women. Any little problem with this area makes the man or woman worry so much especially when it comes to relationships with the opposite sex. For the woman, keeping the private part clean is something that can be very challenging and predispose her to all sorts of advice, some of which can be misleading. The woman's private part, also known as the vagina, is a hollow organ that extends from the outside where the two folds of skin (known as labia) are located between the thighs to the cervix (the opening into the womb) with an average length of 10cm. Urine does not come out of the vagina; it comes out from an opening called the urethra (also found in the man's penis) which is located just above the opening of the vagina. The environment within the vagina is a delicate one: it is made up of fluids that are acidic in nature and bacteria which are harmless and keep disease-causing microorganisms out under normal conditions. Any upset of these acidic fluids and harmless bacteria can lead to a foul-smelling discharge and infection. So how can this delicate environment of the woman's private part be maintained? Does the value of a girl who has been raped diminish afterwards? What are the important medical steps that can be taken to support a rape victim? Almost daily, there's a report of a young girl raped by an older man or a group of men; also, reports pop up every now and then about a young boy molested sexually by an older woman (in this case the older woman can be a maid in a house or a next-door neighbour. In both cases, the victim is threatened in so many ways by the culprits not to report what has been done to him or her. Even when the parents of the victims learn about what happened to their daughter or son, they are forced to bury it because of the societal stigma attached to victims of rape or the potential denial by the culprits and the eventual societal blame that will be laid on the family for an attempt to tarnish another person's image. Hence, victims of rape keep mute and in the process, many of them develop a low self-esteem, with some having thoughts of committing suicide, and a few do end up attempting suicide. Most victims of rape become scarred for life and this affects almost every area of their life, especially when it comes to relationships. Moreover, the tendency to bury cases of rape by the victims and their families predisposes them to unwanted pregnancy (for female victims), sexually transmitted infections and HIV. Therefore, it is extremely important that both the victims of rape and their families and the society at large change this ignorant attitude that encourages taking no action for cases of rape. Everyone needs to understand that the value of a girl doesn't lie in-between her legs nor does being raped change who the person is or what he or she is going to achieve in life. Victims of rape need full, unconditional support the same way accident victims require help. Many people who are dark in complexion, both men and women, have, at one time or the other, thought about getting a bleaching cream for their skin to look fair. Some proceed to get such bleaching creams and start using them after consulting friends who have been bleaching their skin for a while. However, most of these people, if not all of them, don't bother to consult a medical doctor for expert advice and guidelines before applying any of these bleaching creams to their skin. Is bleaching perfectly good for the skin? The colour of your skin is determined by the amount of a pigment, called melanin, which it contains. People with dark complexion has more melanin in their skin compared to those with fair skin. You must have been asked about your blood group either by a doctor in a hospital or before donating blood for other people. But do you know why understanding the concept of blood group is important for everyone? Blood grouping is a way of classifying the blood type of people based on the nature of a specific chemical substance (called an antigen) present on the surfaces of their red blood cells. Hence, the different blood groups which are represented as A, B, AB and O. In addition, one’s blood group is either positive or negative, for instance, blood group A positive or A negative. If your blood group has the positive sign, it means your red blood cells contain another unique chemical substance, known as a rhesus (represented as Rh) factor, on their surfaces; if it has the negative sign it means this unique chemical substance is absent: about 85% of people in the world have this rhesus factor (they are rhesus, Rh, positive) while the remaining 15% don't have it (they are rhesus, Rh, negative). Knowing your blood group is important because: Read more: https://www.kangpe.com/tip/view/208/What-You-Should-Know-about-Your-Blood-Group?utm_source=nairaland&utm_campaign=tip_share&utm_medium=website&type=tip_share |
Today is World Malaria Day and governments, organizations and individuals all over the world are having discussions on the various ways to achieve a world that is free of malaria. Malaria is a major public health concern in Africa because hundreds of thousands of people still die from it every year, with pregnant women, children under 5 years of age and those living with HIV/AIDs being the most affected groups. In addition, malaria in pregnancy contributes to pregnant women developing complications like miscarriage, stillbirth, giving birth prematurely, anaemia in the woman (her blood drops to a dangerously low level) With the theme of this year's World Malaria Day being "End Malaria for Good", you can prevent malaria and effectively treat it before it becomes very serious in the following ways: Read more here https://www.kangpe.com/tip/view/203/You-Can-Prevent-Malaria-in-these-3-Ways?utm_source=nairaland&utm_campaign=tip_share&utm_medium=website&type=tip_share |
Low back pain is one of the most common health complaints that people have when they enter their 40s and 50s. The strength and integrity of the human bone and muscles begin to slightly decline as one advances in age into the 40s and 50s and onwards. So, any undue physical stress at this point going forwards will be too much for the bone and muscles to handle completely without being overwhelmed--which manifests most commonly as pain. Low back pain also occurs in people who are younger than 40 years from different causes. One of the tests recommended during antenatal care for a pregnant woman is the HIV screening test. This is important because some women may not know they are HIV-positive and go on to become pregnant without adequate planning and medical care, thereby predisposing the unborn baby to the virus and other risks such as being delivered prematurely. To significantly reduce the risk of transmission from an HIV-positive pregnant mother to her unborn baby, it is important she knows her status and immediately starts receiving treatment and counselling throughout her pregnancy, during delivery, and after delivery. Mother-to-child transmission of HIV can happen during pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding. The current meningitis outbreak in Nigeria has reached a total of 19 states. About 4000 people are suspected to have been infected so far, out of which over 400 are already dead. Like we stated in a previous health tip on meningitis, Nigeria is one of the countries in the African meningitis belt: a broad region across Africa, cutting across many countries, where the rate of meningitis infection is very high. In Nigeria, the entire north and some parts of the southwest fall within this African meningitis belt, meaning that outbreaks are common in these parts of the country, especially the north, during the dry season, between December and March. This current outbreak is a bit dangerous because a lot of people are not immune to the particular bacterial strain that has been identified as the cause. There were nationwide programs in the past few years to vaccinate Nigerians aged between 2 and 29 years against the Neisseria meningitidis type A which has been the major cause of previous outbreaks. But this current outbreak is being attributed to the type C strain of the organism and the vaccine against it is not widely available, even outside the country because it is not that common. Unprotected sex is engaging in sexual intercourse (vaginal, anal or oral) without a condom, especially with a partner one is just meeting for the first time and whom one does not know anything about their sexual lifestyle and history prior to that point. A situation where the condom tears during intercourse with such one-night-stand partner is also an unprotected sex. The danger of having unprotected sex is majorly the very high risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as HIV; secondly, there's the risk of unwanted pregnancy for women in addition to contracting an STD. Therefore, whenever you engage in an unprotected sexual intercourse, don't hesitate to take the following steps to make sure nothing goes wrong with you health wise: Read more https://www.kangpe.com/tip/view/142/What-to-do-after-an-Unprotected-Sex---------- |
The inability of a man to get his wife (partner) pregnant can be due to several causes. One of such is an abnormal sperm. A man's sperm can be faulty in different ways, all of which will make him infertile. Hence, it is important any man whose wife is finding it difficult to conceive accompanies her to the hospital and they see the doctor together. One of the most important and commonest tests a doctor (urologist) recommends for the man, in this case, is called a seminal fluid analysis (SFA); this test is carried out to examine the sperm for every possible abnormality associated with infertility. Sex, gratifying sexual life, is one of the key ingredients for any successful relationship. A consistent unsatisfactory sex life has the potential to wreck any relationship, hence many men go out in search of answers to every single question on how they can have a magical sex life with their partner, especially those to whom it has been a challenge. With this urgent need for answers comes the readiness to believe theories, some of which are not verified in any objective way, on factors necessary for a magical sexual experience. One of these is the theory that a bigger penis size makes a man much more capable in bed even though his current penis size is normal. As a result, many men search for and experiment with different things on how to increase their penile size. Before attempting anything you've heard on how to increase your penis size, you should know a few things about sex and penis size: Read more here https://www.kangpe.com/tip/view/138/What-you-should-know-about-Penis-size-and--Sex |
Erectile dysfunction is the inability of a man to achieve or maintain an erection that is effective enough for a gratifying sexual experience between him and his partner. Erectile dysfunction is caused by different factors, and an effective treatment of this condition will require you give the doctor, in this case a urologist, complete honest answers to all the questions he will ask you. Also, it is usually advised and has been found to improve treatment outcome, if the man involves his partner (wife) and has her total support and encouragement in every aspect of his treatment. If you have difficulty achieving an erection or low libido and have been wondering on how to go about treating this condition, below are important things to note: 1. The most important part of the treatment of erectile dysfunction is psychological counseling and which should involve your partner. A man with erectile dysfunction can lose self-confidence if he cannot achieve an erection and will shy away from anything sex with his partner. This can negatively affect their relationship, and one of the key things most urologists do is to counsel you and your partner on the importance of having a positive image about yourself and your partner encouraging you even when you try to have sex and nothing satisfying happens. It can be very troubling and embarrassing as a boy or man to have enlarged breasts like a woman, prompting boys or men with this problem to keep searching for possible causes and drugs for treating the condition, known as gynaecomastia. Gynaecomastia occurs due to an imbalance between the hormones oestrogen (found in larger quantities in the woman) and testosterone (found in larger quantities in the man). So any condition in the male that either suppresses the level of testosterone or raises the level of oestrogen will allow oestrogen exert its effects in the man, one of which is the enlargement of breast tissue. If as a boy or man you have gynaecomastia, or you know a boy or man who has, these are what you should know about enlarged breasts in men: 1. Gynaecomastia is often normal for most Boys Enlargement of the breasts in the male, especially in boys attaining puberty (between the ages of 13 and 16), occurs temporarily as part of normal development. At puberty, there's a rise in levels of different hormones, including oestrogen. This causes swelling of the breast tissue and even milky discharge from the nipples in some boys. This is not permanent, and within 6 months to 3 years, the breasts usually regress to the normal male size without any treatment.
