Politics2023: How Ibb’s Projections Placed Osinbajo As The Man To Beat by okefranci(op): 5:03pm On Aug 15, 2021
In the wake of the recent national debate on who succeeds President Muhammadu Buhari, in 2023 set in motion by the former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida, during an exclusive interview with Arise News Channel, with a follow up analysis by ThisDay where the newspaper listed 30 other names alongside Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as fitting into IBB’s recommendations. But while we would all agree that the list of identified individuals is admirably intimidating going by their impeccable records in their respective fields of endeavour and to national development, Osinbajo’s credentials and level of competence is preeminent and overwhelming, write OLUWAFEMI POPOOLA.

The time to begin the search for who will take over from President Mubammadu Buhari and occupy the highest political office in Africa’s most populous black nation has begun.

The successor to Buhari’s legacy is still up in the air. The torchlight for the right candidate is a trending topic and the engagement has taken a centre stage in the media as social commentators, political analysts, media experts have set a premium for the topic which has triggered public discussion.

The present administration took over the exalted office in 2015 following massive support of the citizens at the polls which gave the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) a historic win and put a sword to the fledging 16-year reign of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) government.

Whether the ruling APC has either wowed the people or disappointed them since the time they assumed power is left for experts, analysts and revisionists to explore since that is not the crux of this essay, the issue at hand is who the Presidency cap fits for 2023 elections.

The Nigerian people should also be given the chance to reminisce in full retrospect on whether the ride has been good, bad or ugly on every front starting from governance, infrastructural development, corruption index, social interventions, and many more.

What is inevitable is the reality of a change of government in Nigeria come 2023 and the ensuing drama.

Former Nigeria’s military ruler, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida popularly known as IBB has pioneered the discussion around who will emerge the Nigeria’s next president in 2023 through an exclusive interview he had with Arise News Channel TV sometime last week, days before his 80th birthday.

During the interactive session, he gave a cryptic description of an ideal Nigerian president in 2023 and hinted at the qualities that Nigerians should consider in their choice for the next president.

According to the former head of state: “If you get a good leadership that links with the people and tries to talk with the people; not talking on top of the people, then we would be okay.

“I have started visualising a good Nigerian leader. That is, a person who travels across the country and has a friend virtually everywhere he travels to, and he knows at least one person that he can communicate with.

“That is a person, who is very versed in economics and is also a good politician, who should be able to talk to Nigerians and so on. I have seen one, or two or three of such persons already in his 60s. I believe so if we can get him.”

What is amusing is the surreal manner in which the former military leader resurfaced into the court of public discussion after several years of taciturnity, aloofness and political obscurity.

The former leader also made no attempt to deny the fact that the country has been misgoverned and struck by bad leadership. Although, that has raised a hell of criticism in the minds of some people who believe he was part of those that destroyed this country which subsequently make development and progress difficult for successive administrations due to the many years of rot, maladministration, corruption, impunity and profligacy.

While many would be right to crucify the former ruler for his role in the build up to the devastation of the Nigerian state, it would also be noble to admit that the IBB’s interview with Arise News Channel TV has given the Nigerian people a sense of direction, focus and precision in selecting the right person for the presidential seat in 2023.

Going by IBB’s preferred age limit as one of the projected attributes and criteria for a suitable presidential candidate for the country, if by chance that becomes a yardstick for political parties and the expectation of Nigerians, that would have put an abrupt end to the ambitions of the APC national leader Bola Tinubu and the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who are reportedly still nursing the ambition of becoming Nigeria’s President.

The analytical disqualification of two of Nigeria’s most powerful politicians on the grounds of age by IBB may not have had any constitutional justification but the knock-on ripple effect of the statement of a former leader and elder statesman on any national issue is usually substantial, especially when it is coming from a reticent former military General. That is why it has become a big deal in the media and has generated traction among the people ever since the revelation was unveiled.

The statement has, however, changed the trajectory of public perception of possible contenders for the presidential seat ahead of 2023 general elections.

In a publication by ThisDay newspaper on Monday, 9th of August entitled: “2023: Who leads Nigeria?” The report featured a comprehensive list of prominent Nigerians likely to emerge President or Vice President in 2023 in the wake of the projections of the former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida.

Among the 31 names put together by ThisDay captured Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, President of African Development Bank, Dr Akinwunmi Adesina; former CBN governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo; UN Deputy Secretary General, Mrs Amina Mohammed; former CBN deputy governor, Prof Kingsley Moghalu; WTO DG, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; former Anambra State governor, Mr Peter Obi, and Ekiti State governor, Mr Kayode Fayemi, among 22 others.

While we would all agree that the list of identified individuals is admirably intimidating going by their impeccable records in their respective fields of endeavour and to national development, the current Nigeria’s Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s credentials and level of competence is preeminent and overwhelming. Even, both the Arise News Channel TV’s analysts and ThisDay in its publication testified to it. Yet, Osinbajo has not declared nor shown any intention to run for the Presidency in 2023.

But part of such qualities that made the Nigeria’s Vice President distinguished compared with his predecessors, and even others eyeing the presidential seat, is the fact that, Prof Osinbajo symbolises what the role of a public officer and politician should be: true service and dedication to the people. As a public servant, he has demonstrated and shown that he has what it takes to drive Nigeria successfully with his outstanding character, cognate experience, fecundity and resourcefulness, if he decides to contest.

His cameo as Acting president is a reflection of his capability to successfully steer this country towards development.

When Osinbajo presided over Nigeria as the Acting President, while his boss was away on health tourism, the ambience of the nation was peaceful. At this time, we saw his implacable touch in the handling of public affairs which brought about economic stability, justice, discipline and protection of human lives and supremacy of the constitution.

This is 100% fact that there is no great nation anywhere that has not had this sort of challenge, especially where you have a multi-racial, multi-religious setup. Therefore we need to allow peace ,unity and harmony to reign in Nigeria
PoliticsGreatest Nations In The World ‘re Multi Ethnic, Multi Religious – Osinbajo by okefranci(op): 12:04pm On Aug 12, 2021
VICE President Yemi Osinbajo, Wednesday, said that the greatest nations in the world are multi-racial, multi-religious, and multi-ethnic.

The Vice President also said there is no great nation anywhere that has not had challenges, especially where there is multiracial and multi-religious setup.

He said when people with ethnic and religious differences are united and work together they would likely be economically successful.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this when he received at the Presidential Villa a delegation from the Arewa Concerned People for National Unity and Religious Tolerance from Kano, led by Alhaji Auwal Maidabino and Prince Usman Ado-Bayero.

According to the Vice President, “there is no great nation anywhere that has not had this sort of challenge, especially where you have a multi-racial, multi-religious setup. And the greatest nations in the world are multi-racial, multi-religious, and multi-ethnic.

“As a matter of fact, some of these things are as important as the economy and security…. for the reason that a united people, people who see themselves as one, are more likely to be economically successful, more likely to be able to secure themselves and secure their borders, and more likely to work together for the goodness and greatness of their people.”
Continuing, the Prof. Osinbajo told his guests that were on a courtesy visit that “it is the duty of the leadership, not just political leadership, but also the leadership of social groups and organizations such as yours, to ensure that we are focused on these issues of unity and tolerance.”
He explained further that “as you know, religious tolerance and unity, is for me, a matter that goes beyond mere advocacy. I believe very strongly that the greatness of nations, wherever those nations may be, have always been on account of leaders who thought it fit to build those nations on the basis of unity and tolerance.
“I think that it is such an important issue that we cannot afford to discount it. There is a need for us to pay more time and attention to these issues in whatever way we can because every once in a while, we see some threats to the unity of our country, and we must not allow it to happen at all, we must continue not just in the advocacy, but in action that will bring about unity and religious tolerance,” Prof. Osinbajo added.
Earlier in his remarks, the leader of the delegation, Alhaji Maidabino commended Prof. Osinbajo for his innovative approach to governance and the several initiatives of the Buhari administration anchored through his office and prayed God to provide the opportunity to enable him continue to serve the nation.

Alhaji Maidabino noted that through schemes such as TraderMoni, National Homegrown School Feeding Programme, N-Power, and the Ease of Doing Business initiative, among others, the Vice President has impacted many Nigerians across different sectors.

His words: “we wish to commend and congratulate you for your contributions in the area of promotion of good governance, transparency, and efficiency as exemplified with the core principles behind the Ease of Doing Business initiative of this government, and for the continuation of your uncompromising dedication to peace, unity, and economic progress, among others.”

He informed the Vice President of plans by the group to convene a national forum on unity as part of its contributions to entrenching peaceful coexistence and unity among Nigerians.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says the African Development Bank (AfDB) has agreed to support Micro Small and Medium Enterprises(MSMEs), especially technology-based ones with 500 million dollars in Nigeria.

Osinbajo disclosed this on Sunday at the 33rd Inaugural Lecture of Babcock University, Ilishan Remo, Ogun.
The institution’s 33rd Inaugural Lecture was delivered by Oluseyi Oduyoye, Professor of Business Administration.

The title of the lecture is, “From Small Business to Big Business: A Future with Little Hope”.
The vice president said that one of the things the Federal Government did with small business during the COVID-19 pandemic and afterwards was the introduction of the MSMEs Survival Fund.

“The MSMEs Survival Fund gave almost a million businesses support after the pandemic.

“We paid three months salary of several of the MSMEs especially private schools such as-private primary schools, private secondary schools; we paid for teachers and also for several other businesses.
“I think the statistics will be useful, especially as you further research and work; and so much have been done.
“But as I keep saying, it is a large country; a very big country; in order to deal with all those issues and in order to support more businesses in a way that they ought to be supported, a lot more money is needed.
“And just one final point on that, the AfDB has agreed to support the government with 500 million dollars for MSMEs in technology in particular; so, we think this is something that will be very helpful in addition to the N75 billion, which the government has set aside for young people in small businesses.”
According to him, support for small businesses must continue as they are the future of the country.
He said that the support given to MSMEs had brought hope, jobs and opportunities.
Osinbajo commended also the Seventh Day Adventist Church for the investment it had made in education.
The vice president said that the church’s gesture was worthy of emulation for other religious organisations.
“The real of work of ministering is a work of ministering to the people, especially those who cannot afford to do many of those things themselves.
“The work that the ministries did was the reason the likes of Oduyoye and I are here.
“Because our college (Igbobi College) was one that was founded by two Christian missions–the Anglican and Methodist missions–and they gave quality education at a cheap rate so that we were able to afford it and several of us were able to go to school and be the people we are today.
“So, I believe that it is very important that religious organisations see this as primary in all of the tasks and all of the things they choose to do.
“So, I want to commend the church for this and again, to congratulate dear brother and friend, Oduyoye,” he said.
Earlier, in his lecture, Oduyoye said that small businesses constituted a vibrant part of major economies of the world.

He said that MSMEs were responsible for employing more than 47 per cent of workers in private sector in 2019.
He recommended that government at all levels, especially the Federal Government, should go the extra mile to support small businesses.
Oduyoye said that insurance should be encouraged to mitigate the losses of small businesses.

In his opening remarks, Babcock University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ademola Tayo, said the lecture was in keeping with the tradition of the university in which new professors introduced their research work to world.

Osinbajo lauds Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Babcock University on quality education

Vice President Yemi Osibanjo has commended the Seventh-day Adventist Church and Babcock University for supporting the drive for quality education in Nigeria.

Prof Osinbajo, who gave the commendation in a special address at the University’s 33rd inaugural lecture, on Sunday night at Ilishan – Remo, Ogun State, noted the role the church has played in facilitating quality education in Nigeria.

Babcock’s Director of Marketing and Communication, Dr. Joshua Suleiman, disclosed this in a press release he signed and issued to the media on Monday.

According to him, Osibanjo who was a special guest and former classmate of the lecturer, Prof. Oluseyi Oduyoye, anchored his commendation on the church’s supportive role in building a rich workforce in Nigeria through its investments in Babcock University.

The statement read: “Let me commend the Seventh-Day Adventist Church for investments it has made in developing quality education in Nigeria.

“This is the direction many religious organizations must follow. The real work of ministry is to reach out especially to those who are unable to afford quality education.”

He hinted that, Osinbajo called on state governments to support the Federal Government’s development efforts for the survival of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria.

He also spoke of the Federal Government’s efforts to boost economic growth through providing SMEs with seed investments, grants and incentives for expanding clusters of trade in Benue and Anambra states.

Osinbajo said that support from state governments would ensure these efforts went a long way.
He revealed that the Africa, adding that, Development Bank has offered to support the Federal Government’s SME growth with $500 million dollars to complement its current effort.

“The economic future of our country is dependent on small businesses.

“SMEs employ the largest population of the workforce and the state government support is very critical. Those businesses bring hope, jobs and support for many families,” Osinbajo said.
