PoliticsOsinbajo Distances Self From Rumoured 2023 Presidential Ambition by okefranci(op): 8:41am On Aug 20, 2021
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has distanced himself from a website campaigning and mobilising support for his purported presidential ambition ahead of the 2023 election.
Osinbajo on Monday said he is rather focused on addressing issues including concerns of insecurity among other challenges bedevilling the country.

Distancing himself, the Vice President, through his Spokesman, Laolu Akande, in a statement said the campaign was an unnecessary enterprise.

“The attention of the Office of the Vice President has been drawn to a website:supportosinbajo.ng that is calling on Nigerians to join a volunteer group mobilizing support for Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, ahead of the 2023 presidential election,” Akande said.

“Details of this website and the solicitation of the group are currently trending on WhatsApp with a suggestion that Prof. Osinbajo has “quietly” declared interest in the 2023 election.
“The Office of the Vice President is not in any way connected to this website or the group behind it and considers such an enterprise an unnecessary distraction.

“Prof. Osinbajo has not declared any interest whatsoever in the 2023 election, but he is rather focused on working in his capacity as Vice President in the current administration to address all the compelling issues in the country and concerns of Nigerians, including finding effective and lasting solutions to the security challenges.

“Therefore, we ask that people desist from such unhelpful permutations while we all deal together with the challenges confronting us as Nigerians, and resolve them for the benefit of our people, peace and prosperity in the land.”

PoliticsCOVID-19: FG Seeks Private Sector’s Support For Vaccine Production by okefranci(op): 11:29am On Aug 19, 2021
The Federal Government on Wednesday appealed to the private sector for greater involvement in vaccine and diagnostics production even as it lauded the efforts of the sector to support its response to COVID-19.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo made the call at the Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors’ 23rd National Conference and Annual General Meeting in Abuja.

He was represented by the Director-General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu.

He said, “We keep learning from our successes and challenges and strategising on ways for better preparedness for other emerging diseases.

“The pandemic continues to emphasise the urgent need for innovation and
action, in vaccine manufacturing and in-vitro diagnostics, not just in Nigeria but across the continent of Africa.
“Vaccine manufacturing capacity in Nigeria would greatly impact the national response to COVID-19 and other diseases and this cannot be left to government alone.

“As you know, there is a window of opportunity that exists with infectious diseases and health currently being given priority on the national and global agenda.
“This window requires more than just the usual to be done to ensure that actions follow any plans made to scale-up vaccine and diagnostics production.”

Earlier, the National President of Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors, Elochukwu Adibo, explained that this year’s conference “has over 300 registered participants attending physically and virtually with over 100 invited guests and organisations across the 36 states of the federation including the FCT.”

PoliticsOsinbajo Urges Innovation In COVID-19 Vaccine Manufacture, In-vitro Diagnostics by okefranci(op): 11:17am On Aug 19, 2021
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has emphasised the need for innovation and action in the manufacture of vaccines and in-vitro diagnostics in Nigeria and the African continent.
Speaking at the National Scientific Conference of the Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors (GMLD), yesterday, in Abuja, Osinbajo said vaccine-manufacturing capacity in Nigeria would greatly impact national response to COVID-19 and other diseases. This, he said, could not be left to government alone.

He noted that though the pandemic has led to harsh disruptions to life globally, it has also provided opportunities for the building of health sector infrastructure. He said the expansion of laboratories for COVID-19 testing nationwide, from three at the start of the pandemic to over 140, besides private laboratories, has been a significant contribution to preserving the health of Nigerians.

The Vice President said the inclusion of the private sector was initially considered a risk. But with the proactive leadership of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and support from the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and private medical laboratories, the risk paid off.

He said: “Despite predictions of the worst happening in Africa, there are so many lessons being learned from our response globally. These lessons range from our proactivity before the confirmation of the first COVID-19 case to a digital tool developed by Nigerians with German partners, known as SORMAS. This tool is the reason we can get daily COVID-19 case updates.

“Diagnostics have continued to play a vital role in our ability to detect COVID-19 cases and has enabled us to mount an effective response to the outbreak. The efficient and smooth operations of medical laboratories in the country are dependent on the leadership, planning and commitment of you all, here, today.”

Osinbajo, who was represented by Director General of NCDC, Chikwe Ihekweazu, stressed that while Nigeria is learning from its successes and challenges in the COVID-19 response, the country is strategising on ways for better preparedness against other emerging diseases.
Earlier, President of the Guild, Prince Elochukwu Adibo, called for the harnessing of resources from private and government sectors to improve Nigeria’s healthcare services, especially in human vaccines production and manufacture of in-vitro diagnostics.

He expressed hope that lessons learnt from the COVID-19 response would turn the searchlight of government, international and local support organisations on the private sector, which has been grossly excluded in policies, infrastructure and funding.

“This exclusion, which informs our choice of this year’s conference theme, is regrettable and unfortunate, as it leaves the country missing out on rich medical data domiciled in this sector, which ought to be used for health sector improvement,” he said.

THE NEED TO DO HARD WORK OF MOBILIZING YOUNG PEOPLE FROM GRASSROOTS, BY OSINBAJO

**APC Youths tell VP: You ‘ve always been our advocate, inspiration*

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has called on the youth arm of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to brace up and build a stronger membership base from the grassroots by mobilizing young Nigerians across the country to join the party beginning from the ward level.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this today when he received a delegation of the APC National Youth Lobby Group, who were at the Presidential Villa to present the report of the party’s Youth Conference in June, earlier this year.

Welcoming the idea of young people in the party forming the group, the VP said, “this lobby group will need to deal with the issue of inclusion at the grassroots first.”

According to him, “today, the APC can win elections, why not, we have a very popular President who can control significant votes, we have partners everywhere.

“Whereas, in the coming years, when we do not have such a political leader who is as popular as the President, you are going to need to do the hard work. We can’t assume that the votes will all come in.”

Speaking on the role of APC youths, Prof. Osinbajo said “I think that your group is more relevant today than ever before because you are not only representing young people but you have the energy to make sure that this party actually works for all Nigerians.”

“One of the great opportunities that we have is that we have young people like yourselves who are interested enough in politics. All of you already have shown your capacities in various ways, those who are in government have shown that they can do stuff.

“So, the next hard work now is how to get the younger people in our communities, in our society into this party and to see themselves as part of this party, in their hundreds of thousands, in their millions, that is the next thing to do. I hope that you will apply your resources and energy to do this,” the VP urged.

Commending the successful conduct of the recently held APC Youth Conference, the VP said it demonstrated the ability of youths in the ruling party to take interest in the future of the party and the country.

He noted that “for once, young people showed that political party is not just a platform for contesting elections but a platform to debate ideas, it is about how the party can contribute to policy development.”

The VP said though the political environment is complicated, the youths can get things done by their consistency and tenacity demonstrated in all aspects of political party engagements.

Earlier in his presentation, the leader of the APC National Youth Lobby Group, Barrister Ismail Ahmed thanked the VP for being a consistent voice and supporter of youths regardless of political affiliations, but appealed for more youth integration in the affairs of the party across all levels.

According to him, “you have always been an advocate for young people, we want you, sir, to be vociferous this time around. Please be our voice, be our advocate and champion in everything that you will be doing both in government and in the party.

“This party (APC) is ours. But how we will do as leaders tomorrow depends on how well we are trained as followers, today.”

Another member of the group and Director-General of National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Engr Inuwa Abdullahi observed that the VP “is a source of inspiration to the youths,” adding that the way he supports the youths in the country “is second to none.’

Also present at the meeting were the Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Sen. Babafemi Ojudu; Special Adviser to the President on Infrastructure, Mr Ahmad Zakari, and many youth leaders across the party including Hon. Asuquo Ikpenyong, Mr. Hakeem Shagaya, Dr. Etin Osa, Ms. Fatima Kakuri, Mr. Kabir Aregbesola among others.

PoliticsNigeria’s Crises Reflect Confusion During God’s Creation Of Earth: Osinbajo by okefranci(op): 7:47am On Aug 16, 2021
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says Nigeria’s current crises reflect the chaos and confusion that he claimed characterised the beginning of God’s creation of heaven and earth.

In a statement, Mr Osinbajo’s media aide Laolu Akande said the vice president spoke at the send-off service for Israel Akanji on Sunday.

Mr Akanji served as senior pastor and minister in charge of the First Baptist Church, Garki, Abuja, for 22 years. He is now the new president of the Nigerian Baptist Convention. The president of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Olasupo Ayokunle, and junior health minister Olorunimbe Mamora were present to send him off.

“Indeed, the lives of great men and women, even as the lives of nations teach important lessons. In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep,” Mr Osinbajo reasoned. “The beginning was bleak, confused, without form, empty. This is the way of the lives of some of the greatest men and women and also nations. There might be confusion, grief, trouble, darkness, and fear.”

Suggesting that creation started amid chaos, Mr Osinbajo added, “But even in that confusion, the Bible tells us that the spirit of the Lord was hovering over the face of the deep. God was in the darkness. He did not run away. He is not asleep.”

He, therefore, urged Nigerians to endure the worsening economic and security crises plaguing Nigerians. “Some things may seem bleak and grave, with insecurity, economic difficulties, but even in the midst of these problems, the spirit of God is in this land. It is here, hovering over this nation,” Mr Osinbajo claimed.

The vice president praised Mr Akanji as a humble and credible leader for promoting peace and unity.

“Akanji now proceeds by the grace of God to the exalted office of the President of the Baptist Convention: the highest office of the Baptist denomination in Nigeria,” he stated. “In this long and arduous journey, Akanji has had by his side, his dear friend, partner, and darling wife, Mrs Victoria Akanji, Mama Sunshine. She has been an effective part of the great works that God has done in her husband’s ministry.”
