PoliticsBuhari – Osinbajo Relationship: A Reality by okefranci(op): 1:11pm On Sep 13, 2021
By Abdulhamid Ibrahim Musa

The relationship between top leaders such as Presidents, Governors and their deputies has sometimes become a matter of controversy in our climes and even beyond. Some Presidents and their Vice Presidents as well as governors and deputies have sometimes had strained relations during their common term in office. Many Nigerians remember very well the topsy-turvy relationship between former president Olusegun Obasanjo and his vice Atiku Abubakar during their second term in office.

Consequently, in view of the fact of what has happened before in many circumstances, many watchers in the polity have also tried to look at the Buhari/Osinbajo relationship to analyse and characterise it. However, what one has discovered is that these analysts and commentators on the Osinbajo/Buhari relationship have merely been armchair analysts who have ignored obvious reality, or have been pseudo analysts or outright mischief makers. There seems to be an obvious attempt by some persons in some quarters to try as much possible to continually paint a picture that is quite different from the reality on ground.
A thorough fact check on the Buhari/Osinbajo relationship since their common term in office is quite revealing. There have been several misleading claims but the major one has been the so called relegation of Osinbajo and his waning influence in the Buhari-led administration. But are these claims factual? Such analysts have pointed out to certain events and circumstances to back up their skewed narratives. But a thorough look at the facts on ground concerning the events they have used to their flawed narrative is quite revealing.
For instance, at the coronation of Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th Emir of Kano recently Osinbajo and the President’s Chief of Staff Ibrahim Gambari were present and read two different speeches. Purveyors of the narrative that Osinbajo had been relegated were quick to interprete and report on several media platforms that when “The crowd that gathered at the Sani Abacha Stadium on July 3, to witness the coronation– got more than they bargained for when Osinbajo (the nation’s number two citizen) and Ibrahim Gambari (Chief of Staff In the Office of the President) strode onto the stage at different times, claiming to represent President Muhammadu Buhari”, thus trying to infer confusion of roles or lack of confidence by the president on his vice.
However, the reality was that Osinbajo represented the President at the occasion and performed his role at the event whilst Gambari, on the other hand, attended the event in his capacity as an uncle to the celebrant. In fact, to set the record right, Osinbajo presented Buhari’s speech at the event while Gambari played a complementary role and as a pointer to the significance the presidency attached to the event he only read out a congratulatory letter to the new king signed by the President.
Another report that was obviously meant to to continue to drive the narrative of the nature of the Buhari/Osinbajo relationship in a particular direction was the claim in some quarters that Osinbajo influenced the nomination of Ibrahim Magu as EFCC boss. However, the fact was that the appointment of Magu and eventual sacking and replacement of Magu was done by Buhari sequel to allegations of impropriety against him.
Others have also inferred that since the 2019 elections as a sign of a relegation of Osinbajo in the presidency, the president has refused to hand over to Osinbajo as he had earlier done in on his first term when travelling outside the nation.
But checks reveal a different picture altogether. Whilst it is correct that Buhari has not handed over duties to Osinbajo since his second term began, a cursory observer will note that handing over in the previous term was done in line with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 constitution as amended that provides for such if the President will be away for 21 days. A letter sent to the Senate in 2016 reads: “In compliance with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 constitution as amended, I wish to inform the Distinguished Senate that I will be away on a short medical vacation from 6th-16th of June 2016, and while I am away, the Vice President (Osinbajo) will perform the functions of my office.” However ever since President Buhari was voted for the second term, he has not spent 21 days abroad, which means that any handing over is unconstitutional and actually not necessary. It does not point to a rift in any way.
Another claim that has emerged over time was that the President’s late Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, sacked about 35 of Osinbajo’s aides without informing him. But was this really true? The fact was that no appointee of Osinbajo was sacked as insinuated and at no time did the President admit authorizing the sack of any aide of the vice president. In fact, in articles published by several media platforms such as Daily Independent and the NTA at the time, Buhari denied the termination of appointment of any aides and explained that the appointees were redeployed to a new ministry in the Presidency.

He had described the interpretations of his directives as a sack as ‘unfortunate’. On this note others also said that Osinbajo’s Assistant Pastor, Enelamah, was not re-appointed as Minister of Trade and Investment for Buhari’s second term in office. But independent sources confirmed to this writer that in the first place, it was the late Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari, who was previously a banker before he ventured into politics that nominated Enelamah following their relationship from the banking industry.
Another claim that was made to drive the narrative of a rift between the President and his vice was that he sacked erstwhile Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Musa Daura and the President had no say in the matter and was thus angry with Osinbajo for doing so. But from insiders this writer gathered that such rumour should not be misconstrued as fact. In fact, Buhari not only had foreknowledge of the decision to sack Daura but that actually Osinbajo merely carried out the directive because of the Buhari’s absence. As proof if Buhari was not happy about it, he had powers to reappoint him. But did he?
When in August last year Buhari created the Ministry for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management and appointed Sadiya Umar Farouq as minister some said it was further proof of Osinbajo’s relegation. But factual evidence reveals that this was done in order for Osinbajo to adequately focus on a more tasking assignment and that was to manage a 2.3 Trillion Economic Sustainable Plan(ESP or Stimulus Plan) that was handed over to him by Buhari and not in any way a power move as indicated by the claims. The goals of the NESP are job creation, pumping money into the economy and hopefully stop recession of any sort as well as support small businesses and Made-in-Nigeria.
The reality on ground is that Osinbajo’s influence rather than wane has continued to grow over the years if we look at the actual facts on ground. For a start, apart from the constitutionally guaranteed roles for his office such as being chair of various committees, councils and agencies such as National Economic Council (NEC) , National Council on Privatization, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), National Boundary Commission (NBC) Board , Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA), National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies Board, and the Debt Management Office (DMO) by presidential authority and preference Osinbajo has been given more assignments than any vice president in recent history as a results of an obviously good working relationship with the president.
In fact, since the time of Yar’Adua/Jonathan, Jonathan/Sambo no vice president has been saddled with so much responsibilities as Osinbajo which implies implicit confidence in him by his boss, the President. The facts pointing to this speak for themselves. Osinbajo was also appointed by Buhari to chair the following: Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) , Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) Board , Industrial Policy and Competitiveness Advisory Council (IPCAC), National Council on Skills, National Research and Innovation, and National Council on Nutrition, National Addressing System Council as well as Economic Sustainability Committee to ensure/execute a sustainability plan to deal with the fall out of the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure the economy continues to thrive post- coronavirus.
Others include Power Sector Reform Working Group. Osinbajo also leads the Power Sector Reform Coordination group after the President gave his approval for the composition of the group. The group’s work is to review ownership of electricity distribution companies as well as harmonize various efforts by the Federal Government and the 36 States, through the National Economic Council (NEC), on power sector reform and to oversee the design and implementation of a well-coordinated roadmap for the sector, National Steering Committee (NSC) of the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy (NPRGS). This NPRGS is part of the Nigerian government’s plan to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years, Executive, Legislative Party Consultative Committee.
In any case, a usually taciturn president Buhari on March 8 last during the 64th birthday of Osinbajo in a report by Vanguard newspapers passed a vote of implicit confidence which suggests a tacit endorsement of him for the big job.
His words: I’m proud to have selected Yemi Osinbajo as my running mate. He has given a good account of himself since our journey began in 2015,”
Buhari had also described Osinbajo as “a reliable and dedicated deputy’’
Buhari stated that “Osinbajo is not only admirably competent but also exudes confidence and passion in the performance of his job”.
According to the president, the vice-president is a cool-headed gentleman, who puts the interest of Nigeria above other narrow considerations.
“Vice-President Osinbajo is an incredibly patient politician, who demonstrates remarkable intellectual and mental energy in the discharge of his duties.”
It is self-evident that Buhari not only has a good working relationship with Osinbajo but also has implicit confidence on him and his capacity. This may well be a tacit endorsement of Osinbajo by President Buhari for the big job in the days to come if you know what I mean.

Vice president Yemi Osinbajo on Sunday, led some clerics to pray for God to grant Nigeria victory over sponsors and perpetrators of violence in the country.

The prayers were offered during the dedication of two Churches in Abuja.

The Churches were the All Saints Anglican Church Wuse Zone 5, and the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) City of David Parish, Utako, Abuja.

Mr Osinbajo used the occasion to pray for an end to the spate of violent attacks in parts of the country.

According to Mr Osinbajo, as the Federal Government continues to work hard at finding solutions to the challenges confronting the nation, clergymen and congregants should also pray fervently for the nation to overcome these challenges.

The Vice President first visited the Archbishop Metropolitan and Primate of all Nigeria Anglican Communion, Henry Ndukuba.

Mr Ndaukuba, assisted by Bishop of Kubwa Diocese, Duke Akamisoko, led the prayers for the security, peace and prosperity of Nigeria.

Mr Ndukuba prayed God to give the President and the Vice President and other officials of the present administration wisdom to lead the country.
He prayed that God will grant “ all who serve in the Federal Government the wisdom from above.
When they speak, grant them utterance that comes from the Holy Spirit, fill their hearts with wisdom, and give them kindness of mind.

“And being filled and led by you, oh Holy Spirit, they will fulfill their purpose. And in this government, Lord, may your name be glorified.”

Also Bishop Akamisoko of Kubwa diocese prayed for unity of the nation.
“For our country, to the East, West, North, and South, let your blessings reign on this country, let your glory reign.”

The Bishop prayed God to grant wisdom, good health, sound mind to Osinbajo and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, to be able to administer the country successfully.

There were also prayers during the dedication of the new Church building of RCCG City of David Parish, Utako.
Mr Osinbajo urged members of the church to see the occasion as a call to the greater work of transforming the entire society
The dedication of the physical building called the church must only remind us that the real work of building the church is that of bringing up men and women in the knowledge and nurture of the Lord.
The forces of evil and of hate are more vehement than ever. The battle between light and darkness is more intense than ever, but we will prevail,” he added.

By Omeiza Ajayi – Abuja
The Federal Government has again kicked against calls for secession by separatists in some parts of the country warning that such would be the surest way to extinction.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo gave the warning late Thursday in Abuja while delivering a keynote address at the 2020 Leadership Conference and Awards organized by the Leadership Newspaper Group.

The Conference which had as its theme, “National and Regional Security: Role of Political and non-Political Actors in Stabilization and Consensus Building” held at the International Conference Centre ICC, Abuja.
Among awardees at the event were Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele; President, African Development Bank AfDB, Dr Akinwumi Adesina; Borno state Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum as Persons of the Year; Gov. Mai Mala Buni of Yobe state and Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo state as Politicians of the Year; Gov. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike of Rivers, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos and Gov. Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara state as Governors of the Year.

Other awardees include the Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, Mr Boss Mustapha (Public Service Person of the Year 2020); Late Flying Officer Arotile Tolulope Seraph (Outstanding Young Person of the Year Posthumous Award); Shola Akinlade (CEO of the Year), Abdulrazaq Isa Kutepa (Business Person of the Year); the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC (Government agency of the Year) and the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 (Government agency of the Year).
Speaking at the event, Osinbajo said; “Often when we explore the concept of national and regional Security, there is a tendency to situate the discourse around the machinations of externally generated vulnerabilities and external adversaries.
“So, we argue often that the problem is state fragility in Africa is on account of the colonial origins of her nation-states.

“The notion for example that Nigeria is a hastily and arbitrarily cobbler together, patchwork of mutually alienated kingdoms and as a result, it has remained plagued by fundamental challenges rooted in its founding.
Now, this is a popular view but of course it is not the whole true. Indeed it is my humble view that the colonial beginnings of African nation-states do not constitute an inimitable obstacle to nation-building that it is often thought to be. After all, colonialism itself was a historic global phenomenon across states from Africa to Asia to Europe and America.

“The chief weakness that we have is a human one. Our political, economic and religious elite who have so far proved to be socially irresponsible, has so far been unable to build institutions.
We must be able to say to the young men and women who for instance say that secession is the only way or that we should break into little nations and that that is the only way. We must be able to say to them that that is the way to extinction not development”.

Chairman of the event and Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar Saad II on his part denounced religious extremism, saying religion should be a personal relationship with one’s God.

He said working with other religious leaders, would ensure that those who are fanning the embers of religious strife do not succeed.

In his remarks, Dr Adesina noted that Africa should not be begging for COVID-19 vaccines.

“Africa should be producing vaccines. Nigeria and Africa must put in place a health security defence system. Health security is only assured by being self reliant. Health security cannot be outsourced. AfDB will be providing $3billion for developing health infrastructure in Africa”, he stated.

FamilyOsinbajo At Funeral Of Ogun State Governor's Dad: Pa Abiodun Was A Rare Breed by okefranci(op): 6:15pm On Sep 09, 2021
STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

OSINBAJO AT FUNERAL OF OGUN STATE GOVERNOR'S DAD: PA ABIODUN WAS A RARE BREED, SERVED HIS FAMILY, COMMUNITY & NATION WELL*

Many will continue to celebrate the life and times of late Pa Emmanuel Abiodun, not just because of his achievements, but because of the inheritance he left for hundreds of thousands of people, including his own children, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this today at the St. James Anglican Church in Iperu-Remo, Ogun State, where he attended the funeral Service of Pa Abiodun, father of the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.

According to the Vice President, the late Pa Abiodun was "a rare breed, a man who served his family, who served his community, his nation, and his God; and he served them well."

"On behalf of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, and the Government of Nigeria, I extend my very sincere condolence, first to Mama, Mrs Victoria Abiodun, and to His Excellency, the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun; his wife, the First Lady of Ogun State; and all of the siblings and members of the family. Please accept our sincere condolences, and as we celebrate today, we pray that the Almighty God will continually bless you and bless the family," the VP stated.

Continuing in his tribute to the man fondly called "Baba Teacher", the VP said, "he enjoyed the grace of God and the mercies of God. If you look at his biography, you will find that he, truly in an exceptional way, enjoyed the mercies of God. For a man in his time to have been a graduate, with a degree in English and English Literature, a Masters degree and then a PhD, about 50- 60 years ago; truly, such a person is blessed.

"But he did not take that grace for granted. He gave back to society, he became a teacher, a teacher of teachers. And we all celebrate him and we celebrated even his lifetime. 'Baba Teacher' taught so many and gave back to so many.  And he kept giving back to his community and serving the church.

"And one of the things that we would see is what he was able to do, to give his children. The truth of the matter is that, as Scripture says, a good man leaves an inheritance for his children's children. That inheritance is not just in possessions, it is not in money, it is the gospel of Jesus Christ which he gave to His Children and, of course, all of those that he came across. And through that, he impacted the work of the gospel.

The VP added that "by giving that precious gift, he left  an indelible mark, a mark that must continue for generations, because the gospel is a gospel of integrity, and a gospel that promises eternal life."

Other dignitaries present at the event include former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his wife; the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila; State Governors, including those of Lagos, Kebbi, Ondo and Ekiti states; members of the Federal Executive Council, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha; the Minister for Mines and Steel Development, Mr. Olamilekan Adegbite; Youths and Sports Development Minister, Mr. Sunday Dare; and the Aviation Minister, Mr. Hadi Sirika.

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastors E.A Adeboye and his wife, Pastor Folu Adeboye, were also in attendance; alongside other ministers of God, including the Anglican Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos and Bishop of Remo; the Most Revd Dr. Michael Olusina Fape, who preached.

representing President Muhammadu Buhari at a virtual Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) extraordinary summit on the situation in Guinea Republic.

At the emergency Wednesday meeting of the regional political and economic union of 15 countries located in West Africa, which began at 2:00 p.m., top on the agenda is the recent toppling of a democratic government of the President Alpha Conde administration, among other pressing security issues within the subregion.

The ECOWAS secretariat had, on Tuesday hinted on its plan to hold an extraordinary summit on Guinea on Wednesday, in a memo shared by its staff with the media.

Recalled special forces of soldiers ousted long-serving President Alpha Conde and dissolved his cabinet on Sunday, prompting ECOWAS to demand a return to constitutional order and threaten to impose sanctions. read more

The group of elite troops led by a Guinean former French Foreign Legionnaire, who arrested 83-year-old Conde, announced they were scrapping the constitution and imposed a curfew in the West African state.

Consequently, ECOWAS, on Sunday condemned the coup and demanded Conde’s unconditional release.

A follow to its demands for restoration of democratic rule in Guinea is its emergency virtual extraordinary summit of member states called to discuss the situation in Guinea, the communications director for the ECOWAS Commission, Sandra Oulate, said on Tuesday.

A statement to journalists on an ECOWAS social media account said the meeting would be at 2:00 pm (1400 GMT) on Wednesday.

Conde, a former champion of democracy, had been facing mounting anger for sidestepping constitutional limits on presidential terms.

He was Guinea’s first democratically-elected president in 2010 and was re-elected five years later. But he triggered protests last year when he pushed through constitutional changes enabling him to run again.

The international community criticised the latest turmoil in a region where many countries are struggling with poverty, inequality and jihadist insurgencies.

The African Union (AU) and the United Nations called for Conde’s release. The EU and France, the former colonial power, both condemned the coup — the latest in a region that has seen recent military takeovers in Mali and Chad.

THE Deeper Christian Life Ministry has completed a biography on the founder and General Superintendent of the church, Pastor William Kumuyi.

The book titled, ‘Kumuyi, Defender of the Faith,’ will be unveiled on Friday, September 17, 2021 by the Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, and the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos.

The forward was written by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Worldwide, Pastor Enoch Adeboye.

The Chairman of the Book Editorial Board, Pastor Philip Oluwi, stated these on Monday during a press briefing at the DCLM headquarters, Gbagada, Lagos.

Oluwi stated that the book, which was written by media experts and a professor at the University of Lagos, was published in the United Kingdom by Elite Academy Publishers, adding that hundreds of thousands of copies had been produced.

The church leader said before now, no full length book had been written on Kumuyi because of the cleric’s ‘strict policy’ of not projecting himself or his private life above the gospel of Jesus Christ.

He added that the need to globalise evangelistic outreaches compelled Kumuyi to start employing the media space more actively.
Oluwi said in October 2020, some of the church elders decided to produce the biography to honour the octogenarian and further the gospel under him, adding that the project started by November.

“The project was not without its apprehension and challenges though. This was because having worked with him for more than four decades, some of us were, at first, apprehensive about his reaction to a project that will attract the attention of the world and the media to his personality rather on his saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the ministry of world evangelisation for which he was irrevocably committed to relentlessly pursuing, than any other consideration.

“Yet, to the team, it was clear that we were embarking on a project of faith, nay, a project of risk. But because we were convinced that it was a noble and legacy project that must be done, we pressed on doggedly, without first seeking the initial approval of the general superintendent. We were eventually extremely relieved when he gave his nod to the project,” he added.
