Business / Re: Nigeria Spends $500 Million Annually On Palm Oil Importation - CBN by okeysly(m): 9:46pm On Apr 01, 2019
oldtruth:
The Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele on Monday said that over five hundred million dollars was being spent annually on importation of palm oil.

Mr Emefiele said this at a stakeholders’ meeting on the Palm Oil Value Chain held in Abuja.

The meeting was attended by the Governors of Akwa Ibom, Edo and Abia.

Also, the managers of Dangote Farms, Flour mills, United Food Industries and Dufil Frima Foods Plc, among others were at the meeting.

Mr Emefiele said it was a sad fact that the country was still importing palm oil in spite sufficient arable land in the South-South and South-East regions of the country to farm it.

He recalled that in the late 50’s and 60’s, Nigeria was not only the world’s leading producer of palm oil, but it was also the largest exporter of palm oil, accounting for close to 40 per cent of the global market share.

He said right now, Malaysia and Indonesia were the top producers of palm oil and Nigeria the fifth, after getting their seeds and learning how to cultivate oil palm from Nigeria.

“This conversation is indeed important as it forms part of our overall strategy to reduce our reliance on crude oil imports, diversify the productive base of our economy, create jobs and conserve our foreign exchange.

“Despite placing oil palm in the forex exclusion list, official figures indicate that importation of palm oil had declined by about 40 per cent from the peak of 506,000 Metric Tonnes (MTs) in 2014 to 302,000 MTs in 2017.

“This indicates that Nigeria still expends close to 500 million dollars on oil palm importation annually and we are determined to change this narrative.

Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

Media officer to Lagos State Governor-Elect, Mr. Gboyega Akosile has described the relationship between Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu and Governor Akinwunmi Ambode as very cordial, urging those in the business of sowing seeds of discord among political leaders for selfish gains to desist from such as it will not work in this case.

Reacting to a news story exclusively reported by Daily Independent newspaper and spread by some online platforms, Akosile said although it is true that Mr. Sanwoolu is yet to personally visit His Excellency, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode since he was declared winner of the March 9 gubernatorial election, the two leaders are in constant communication, working on modalities for a smooth transition.

‘’I can confirm to you that Mr. Sanwoolu and Governor Ambode are in constant touch with each other. What you need to know is that they are working quietly behind the scene to come up with a smooth transition.

‘’As we speak, they are talking majorly about the composition of the transition committee that will work on the seamless hand-over on May 29th this year.

There is no rift of any sort between the Governor-Elect and the sitting Governor. At least I can speak authoritatively that the Governor-elect does not think about all that happened during the campaign period, rather his mind is fixed on the future of Lagos State. Mr. Sanwoolu’s thoughts are pre-occupied with the daunting challenges that are ahead of him and how he will harness the available human and material resources to achieve his campaign promises of a greater Lagos for all.’’

Akosile further assured that at the appropriate time, Lagosians will be privy to all that the two leaders are doing to achieve a seamless transition.

‘’Very soon, Lagosians will be availed the details of all the positive things that our leaders have been working on in the background. Don’t forget that campaign period is over, now is time for some serious work on how to move Lagos State from the point it is to where we all desire.’’

I did some rigorous reading and finally emerged the best in my department, I was happy about it but the reality is no one was ready to retain me, the jobs weren't forth coming, I have to create a means to make ends meet for myself.
