EducationPrevalence Of Cohabitation In Nigerian Tertiary Institutions (A Feature) by Okoyepeter442(op): 4:43pm On Apr 01, 2024
PREVALENCE OF COHABITATION IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS: A RISING MENACE

Okoye Peter

The issue of cohabitation in our campuses is one that cannot be underestimated. It has been practiced overtime that it has now become a norm, what we would call "normal thing" in our local youthful parlance.
There is hardly any tertiary institution around the globe where cohabitation does not exist given that the major population in these institutions are youths who are not under surveillance from parents or sponsors.

According to the Oxford Advanced Dictionary, Cohabitation is a man and a woman to to live together and have a sexual relationship without being married.
In order words, cohabitation is an arrangement where people who are not married, usually couples, live together. They are often involved in a romantic or sexual intimate relationship on long-term basis.

On a more broader conception, the term "cohabitation" can mean any number of people living together. To 'cohabitate' simply means to 'coexist'. According to Wikipedia, the origin of the term comes from the 16th century, from the Latin cohabitate, from co-'together' and habitare 'dwell'.

Cohabitation have increasingly become common in Western countries since the late 20th century, thereby bringing about changes in social views, especially as regards to marriage, gender roles and religion.

Cohabitation which was once considered an unwholesome practice in the African culture is becoming prevalent and widespread among students in Nigerian tertiary institutions birthing a vast array of repercussions. Findings have shown that at least 71% of students in Nigerian public tertiary institutions are cohabiting with the opposite sex in school.
This is what Nigerian students would dubb "single at home, married in school". It is students of the opposite sex that usually partake in cohabitation.
Emphasis is placed on "devoid of marriage" because sexual activity is actually meant for married couples. It is therefore morally wrong for two opposite sexes to engage in any sexual relationship devoid of marriage. One would as well wonder why this issue of cohabitation is prevalent in tertiary institutions.

The obvious factors that would lure students to cohabitation includes financial constraints, need for academic assistance, lack of proper parental upbringing, disregard for African norms and culture, youthful curiosity and peer pressure.
Students in tertiary institutions are within the youthful age bracket of 17 - 24 and in this age disposition, there is every tendency for most of them who are outside the purview of their parents or guidance to " explore life" and try so many things. Many would refuse to tag cohabitation as a menace, logically they are not to blame in that financial constraints is a major factor that promotes cohabitation. Female students because of paucity of finance in school are pressured to live with their male counterparts and perform duties as a wife to him including satisfying his sexual urges. The male in reciprocity is expected to meet the financial needs of the female student which includes paying her school and tuition fees, buying textbooks, provisions and other necessary things for her. The male party in this aspect might be a student or a single or married working class man living within or outside the school environs. As in the case of a non-student, female students, especially those living in the hostels are pressured to move out of the hostel and live with such man.
Still on the issue of financial constraints, students are also forced to cohabit in order to cut costs as it concerns their accomodation. This is usually the case between students living in the same lodge. These students are forced to live together and share the rent they are supposed to pay.

Out from the viewpoint of finance, another major factor that influences cohabitation is the tendency to "explore". Students in the tertiary institutions are outside the watchdog of their parents or sponsors and this they would be tempted and pressured most especially by peers to do what would be tagged "condemnable" in the eyes of their parents or guidances. In prime ages of life, peer pressure and the the tendency to explore new things is always very rampant and hence students who haven't engaged in any form of sexual relationship before see it as a golden opportunity to eat the forbidden fruit. A greater perception of students often disagree that cohabitation increases the risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), unwanted pregnancies and abortions but that will be too far from the truth and would be tagged a misconception following the adverse effects of cohabitation in the long run.

However, in antithesis, as it should be, there are adverse effects for students who engage in cohabitation. A major, nay disastrous effect of cohabitation is that it would lead to unwanted pregnancies. As a result of not being married but being in a sexual relationship, there is a huge possibility of unwanted pregnancies which would be termed illegal and at that, these female students would be forced to terminate the pregnancy. This may reoccur overtime in the relationship which is going to damage the reproductive system of the affected student in the long run. On the other hand, of the child from such relationship would be given birth to, it is no doubt going to bring societal shame and stigma to the both parties involved.
This has happened overtime in that such students would give birth to the child and drop out of school to take up a new role as a single mother in order to take care of the child thus ending her studentship career abruptly.

Another resounding effect is "abuse and infidelity". Since persons cohabiting are not within the legal confines of marriage, abuse (from the male) and infidelity (from the female) is perceived to be rampant. University of Chicago sociologist, Linda Walte found that "16 percent of cohabiting women reported that arguments with their partners became physical during the past year, while 5 percent of married women had similar experiences ". Walte's surveys demonstrated that 20% of cohabiting women reported having secondary sex partners compared to only 4% of married women. Also, according to an article by Judith Treas and Deirde Giesen, cohabiting couples are twice as likely to experience infidelity within the relationship than their married counterparts. These would not be nice experiences to students who should consider their studies a top priority. This effect could have a post traumatic experience on them when legally married to their partners.

Another great effect if not the former is that students involved in cohabitation decline in their academic life. They would not have the ample time again to concentrate on their studies as a result of the duties, especially the female students would be performing to her husband of fantasy, which would include: washing the clothes, cooking, cleaning the house and so much more. These are students that would also record the highest number of carryovers at the end of every semester which would not be a good way to go about an academic journey of importance to their families and sponsors. Students living outside the campus are the ones that mostly engages in cohabitation and affected the most.

Strategies for minimizing the incidence of cohabitation among university students includes keeping away from bad companies, reduction in school and accommodation fees, proper parental upbringing. Cohabitation is prevalent among undergraduate students in Nigeria. University administrations should therefore make accomodations available and affordable for all students.

This issue is one that would linger unabated if the necessary things would be done to stem it. Students should be enlightened on the dangers and adverse effects of cohabitation during freshmen orientation and matriculation ceremonies. In essence, unless legally married, there is no moral justification for students seeking for a bright future in the higher institution to cohabit in order not to face the myriad future repercussions.

EducationCommon English Mistakes And Their Corrections (A Must Read) by Okoyepeter442(op):
The English language is what we would refer to as an L2 language, that is, a second language. In Nigeria, the English language is our lingua franca or what we would commonly call "official language" in English.
Interestingly, it is obvious that the English language has not been rooted deep in our tongue and oral lifestyle which is why we make mistakes while using the language, most times unknowingly. Most of these mistakes have been normalized overtime to the extent that we (Nigerians) and by extension Africans now see them as grammatically correct whereas the otherwise is the case.

In this article, I am going to share 20 most popular and common mistakes we make while using the English language; most times we make these mistakes out of ignorance. In this write-up, you will be awed to see the corrections.

ODE TO THE UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA: MY MATRICULATION EXPECTATIONS.

Four years from now, God's willing, I and other mass communication undergraduates nationwide would officially become members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm; but for now, let's face the stage where the iron is being shaped to the desired tools by the blacksmith (academics).

Taking a look at how brown-envelope journalism, yellow journalism and gonzo journalism has infiltrated the profession in Africa and beyond, it leaves much to be desired. I just wish the future resource persons in the media industry will salvage this menace. The practice of journalism is at the risk of unprofessionalism as is the case in Africa and other third world countries.

I strongly believe and uphold that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and other institutions of learning worldwide would shape us (prospective journalists) to the desired persons to bring this change in the media industry.

We matriculate to graduate and convocate. There must be a paradigm shift in this profession.
This is my ideology!!!

PoliticsSocio-political Chronology Of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alexander Chioma Otti. by Okoyepeter442(op):
PROFILE AND SOCIO-POLITICAL CHRONOLOGY OF DR. ALEXANDER CHIOMA OTTI - ABIA STATE'S DUBBED "FRESH AIR"

OKOYE PETER

Dr. Alexander Chioma Otti is a banker turned politician who was recently elected into office as the governor of Abia State, Nigeria. He held executive positions in several banks before retiring in 2014 to pursue his political ambitions. He holds a first class Honors degree in economics and an MBA.
Alex Otti is the man of the moment not just because of his expertise in the banking sector, but because he would become the first Labour Party candidate to clinch the seat of a gubernatorial position in the just concluded 2023 general elections.
Here's his story.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Alex Otti was born on the 18th of February 1965 in Isiala-Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State to the family of late Mr and Mrs Lazarus WezeOtti. He attended the Ngwa High School and Secondary Technical School, Okpuala-Ngwa in Abia state, finishing as the best student of his class in the School Certificate Examinations.
He attended the University of Port Harcourt for his bachelor's degree and graduated with a first class Honors degree in Economics in 1988. He equally graduated as Best Student of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Overall Best Graduating Student for that year.

Interestingly, he was politically active as a student. He was the treasurer for the university chapter of the Nigerian Economics Student Association (NESA) in 1986 and subsequently became the president of the association the following year. He also served as the editor-in-chief for the school newsletter, Uniport Mirror. He would later o obtain an MBA degree from the University of Lagos. Alex Otti has also taken some international courses in institutions like Columbia Business School, Stanford Business School and Wharton Business School over the years.

HIS BANKING CAREER
Alex Otti started his banking career fresh out of school when he joined the Nigerian International Bank, a subsidiary of Citibank New York in 1989. He worked in the operations department and later moved to Nigerian Intercontinental Merchant Bank LTD where he worked simultaneously in the Treasury and Financial Services unit as well as the Corporate Banking division.
In 1992, he joined SocieteBancaire Nigeria Limited (Merchant Bankers) a subsidiary of Banquet SBA Paris where he rose to the position of Senior Manager, before moving to the United Bank of Africa (UBA) as Principal Manager overseeing the bank's corporate banking sector for the entire south division, and also saddled with the responsibility of growing the Oil and Gas business for the bank. He was promoted to the position of Assistant General Manager in 2000.
In May 2001, Otti joined the First Bank of Nigeria as Assistant General Manager with the sole responsibility of growing the Energy sector for the bank. He was later appointed as Executive Director of commercial banking. He also served as the executive director of the South Directorate, where he was responsible for over 140 branches in both the South South and South Eastern geo-political zones of the country.
In 2011, he moved from First Bank Nigeria to Diamond Bank as the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer. He retired from the banking sector in 2014 to pursue his political ambitions.

ALEX OTTI, THE POLITICIAN
After leaving Diamond Bank, Alex Otti made his first run for the governorship seat of Abia State on the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA). Otti was declared winner of the election after the Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri sacked the purported winner, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). But the decision was overturned by the Supreme Court. He made another unsuccessful attempt to clinch the No.1 seat in the state in 2019 when he contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Undeterred, Otti contested again in the 2023 general elections on the platform of the Labour Party (LP). This time, he won a Pyrrhic victory. After a keenly and fiercely contested election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Alex Otti the winner of the governorship election in Abia State having polled a total number of 175,467 votes to defeat his closet rival, Okechukwu Ambrose Ahiwe of the PDP who polled 88,529 votes. Otto's election victory saw a frenzied jubilation sweep throughout the nook and cranny of the state as the people christened the political ambience of the moment a "fresh air".

His manifesto for Abia State features some bold economic policies and initiatives, which have been likened to the New Deal that Franklin Delano Roosevelt implemented and rescued millions of Americans from the harsh economic realities that was unleashed by the Great Depression. Otti has promised to set Abia State on the path towards progress and shared prosperity.
Considering that Abia State houses Aba - which is considered a major economic hub in South East Nigeria - the expectations on Gov. Otti is high implying that he would have to bring his management dexterity as a former banking executive and his economic knowledge to bear.

OTHER SPHERES
Alex Otti serves on the board of several companies and is also on the board of two of Nigeria's leading universities. He is also a member of the editorial board of THISDAY Newspaper and writes on the column titled "Outside The Box" on a range of issues.

CrimeLet's End The Menace Called "Sexual Harassment". Dean Of Student Affairs To UNN by Okoyepeter442(op): 11:21am On Dec 13, 2023
TAKE BOLD STEPS TO REPORT CASES OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT - DEAN OF STUDENT AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT TO UNN STUDENTS.

Okoye Peter

The Dean of Student Affairs Department, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Edwin Omeje has urged students of the institution to shun cowardice and take bold steps to report cases of sexual harassment and indiscipline to the appropriate authorities in the university.
Prof. Omeje made this statement at a seminar held at the Princess Alexandria Auditorium on Tuesday, 6th of December. The seminar titled "Minimizing Sexual Harassment in Our Campuses" with the theme "Let's kick the menace out of our campus" saw to the presence and intellectual inputs of the Vice Chancellor , Prof. Charles. A Igwe; the University Registrar, Dr. Ngozi Nnebedum; Director of Service Commissar (SERVICOM), Prof. Sabinus Ofoefule; erstwhile Dean of Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty, Prof. Patience Osadebe; the Convener of the seminar, Dr. Ngozi Osadebe and other prominent figures within the ranks and files of the university.
The seminar was heralded with the ushering of the panellists to the high table which was followed by a rendition of the national and university anthem.
In the opening speech by one of the panellists, Dr. Ngozi Osadebe, she vividly elucidated on the dangers of sexual harassment and their prevalence in Nigerian tertiary institutions nay the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She opined that sexual harassment is something that can be a thing of the past if the laws guiding them can take it's full wrath on the culprits of the crime
She also acknowledged the panellists, guests, resource persons and the students for making out time to be in such an impactful event such as the seminar.
This was followed by a keynote address from the patron of the seminar, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Arinze. C Igwe who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Patrick. He asserted that sexual harassment on campus or anywhere is something that is peculiar to both genders as against the popular notion held that the female gender are the major victims. He opined that the moment a lady wears a skimpy dress to the sexual excitement of a man, she has sexually harassed the man in obscurity. He also emphasized the need for modesty in dressing stressing that it is a major catalyst to combating sexual harassment.
In a survey delivered by Dr. Elizabeth Babarinde from the department of Nutrition and Dietitics titled "Findings on the Survey of Information to Minimize Sexual Harassment", she reported that the female gender dominated the accumulated cases of sexual harassment with a rate of 60% while the males accounted for 37.6% with a student respondent of 71% and a staff respondent of 25%. She also reported in the survey that in the category of students who responded, first year students accounted for 41.7%, penultimate year students accounted for 31% while others accounted below 27%. On the age group category, she reported that students between the ages of 20 to 23 accounted the highest with 33.3%. She concluded in the survey that in the different faculties in the university, the Arts Faculty reported the highest case with 38.9%.
Following the survey was a lecture delivered by Prof. Ola Onuoha from the department of Nutrition and Dietitics titled "Factors that Promote Sexual Harassment on Campus". In her lecture, she reeled out the factors as lack of awareness from new students, poverty, power imbalance - gender inequality, avarice, harmful cultural norms, desperation by students to pass exams indecent dressing, cohabitation by students from the opposite gender, inadequate security and so on. She made a lucid distinction between between flirtation and sexual harassment to which she said that the former does not bring about bodily harm or post-traumatic effects but the latter does.
Furthermore, the director of Service Commissar (SERVICOM) and former Dean of student affairs, Prof. Sabinus Ofoefule in his lecture titled "University's Policies Towards Sexual Harassment" implored students to speak out if they are being sexually harassed stressing that the long arms of the law would catch up with the culprits as nobody is above the law adding that combating sexual harassment is the sole mandate of SERVICOM. He called on students to repeat to the appropriate authorities in school on noticing early signs or acts of sexual harassment.
The Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Prof. Patience Osadebe in a lecture titled "Bystanding Procedures in Minimizing Sexual Harassment" buttressed that students acting as third parties or bystanders in cases of sexual harassment should swiftly report to appropriate authorities to avoid risking themselves as accomplices to such high profile cases.
The Registrar of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Dr Ngozi Nnebedum delivered a final lecture titled "The Role of the University in Minimizing Sexual Harassment". In her lecture, she assured students that the university would not treat with kid gloves cases of sexual indiscipline brought to its table either from the students or the staff highlighting the laws of the university against indecent dressing and sexual misconduct citing the Sexual Misconduct Policy of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
In conclusion, there was a short play on stage by students on the dangers of sexual harassment which passed an advocacy on the need to end the menace after which the Dean of Student Affairs Department, Prof. Edwin Omeje made the closing remarks urging students to muster the courage to report cases of sexual harassment adding that students should study very hard to avoid leaving them vulnerable to sexual harassment especially from staffs. He thanked the students for their keen attention and being steadfast to the end of the lengthy seminar urging them to be the vanguard on the movement against sexual indiscipline in the university and beyond.

EducationRemembering The Spanish Flu Of 1918 (grandpa To The Coronavirus). by Okoyepeter442(op): 5:57am On Aug 19, 2023
Pandemics are not a novel phenomenon in modern world history. By this time 105 years ago, a great plague bedeviled much of the world's geographical entity - the "Spanish Flu".

The virus was an exceptionally deadly global "influenza pandemic" caused by the "H1N1 influenza A virus". The earliest documented case was in March 1918 in the US state of Kansas with subsequent cases being recorded in France, Germany and the United kingdom in April of that year. Two years later, an estimated 500 million had been infected in four successive waves leading to 50 million deaths, nearly a third of the global population.

To elucidate more on the this history, this is to bring to limelight.

As the United States entered World War I, the disease quickly spread from Camp Funston (where it was first detected) to other US Army camps and Europe, becoming an epidemic in the East coast, Midwest, and the French ports by April of 1918, and rapidly reaching the Western Front by the middle of the month. Like a flashlight, the virus quickly spread to the rest of France, Britain, Italy and Spain and in May reached Wroclaw and Odessa in present day Ukraine.
After the signing of the Treaty of Brest- Litovsk in March 1918, Germany started releasing Russian prisoners of war, who then spread the disease to their country. Instantly, the flu reached North Africa, India and Japan in May and was reported in China in June, after reaching Australia in July, the wave started to recede.

The Spanish flu pandemic caused a great disruption in the military operation of the First World War.
More so, when many may wonder the exact origin of this two-word nomenclature, when we think of the 1918 influenza pandemic, the terminology "Spanish Flu" often comes to mind. Amazingly, despite it's name, the pandemic didn't actually originated in Spain.

During the tumultuous World War I, various countries were grappling with the effects of the pandemic when it first broke out, but many were reluctant to openly discuss it. Spain, however, took a different approach. Spain was neutral in the war, just as Switzerland and Turkey were, Spain had no censorship in place thus allowing them to openly report on the outbreak. This led to a historical misconception that the flu had originated in Spain hence the name.

In reality, the origins of the virus remains debated and uncertain, making it a bit of a historical controversy. The pandemic's early cases were linked to overcrowded military camps and other public spaces which were common during the war. The surge of the virus mutated into an extremely contagious and deadly strain, resulting in a global health crisis in the early 20th century.
