Politics / Ondo Election: Stand-point Of The Law On Jegede's Partial Victory In Court by Oladipos(m): 12:35pm On Nov 11, 2016
Before I congratulate my dear brother, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, on his prayer that was granted by the appeal panel which sat in Abuja today, let me quickly educate the people of Ondo state that the ‘Leave of Appeal’ which the panel granted him is just for him to be able to file an appeal against the June 29 ruling of Justice Abang out of time.

Constitutionally, he was supposed to have filed the appeal in the 2nd week of July but he didn’t hence Abang didn’t grant his prayer to file the appeal out of time two weeks ago.

For the sake of information, granting a ‘Leave of Appeal’ only means that the applicant can file an appeal out of time. It doesn’t mean that INEC must return his name back on the candidates’ list.

Now that the leave of appeal has been granted today, my brother (Jegede) can file an appeal against the June 29 ruling, a process which can never be fast-tracked (it must take between 90 to 120 days, and election takes place in less that 16 days).

Filing the appeal or let me say securing a notice of appeal doesn’t not nullify the October 14th ruling of Justice Abang which INEC is currently acting on (The ruling is making Jimoh Ibrahim to be the PDP candidate for the Nov. 26 poll.

Even if my brother (Jegede) files the appeal which constitutionally won’t be decided until February, 2017, his notice of appeal doesn’t have the capacity to make INEC remove Jimoh Ibrahim’s name from the candidates list (Even when it is clear to all that Ibrahim can never win his own local government let alone the whole Ondo state).

INEC will remove Ibrahim’s name if only the appeal can be heard and made to favour Jegede before the election but it is a fact that the appeal cannot be decided before the next 90 to 120 days.
Granting you a right to appeal doesn’t mean that your claim is just. Even a condemned criminal is given the right to appeal.

Another question: Can the appeal court rule against the opinion of the Nigerian Judiciary Council (NJC)? Let’s remember that the NJC had yesterday said in the media that all the rulings of Justice Abang on the Ondo PDP crisis are very right.

I love my uncle’s (Jegede) partial victory today and I will call to congratulate him but before I do so and also before my paternal uncle (Governor Mimiko) finishes his public dance at Oja Oba this night, let me say these:

INEC said it wanted substantive ruling from the appeal court before October 27 so it could retain Jegede’s name.

INEC said there is no new ruling which comes after October 27 that can change the list it published on the 28th october.
INEC also said the list will remain like that since no superior ruling had come before October 27. The electoral body also noted all the fresh appeals (after October 27) remain pre-election matters. It means they have no strength until after the election. Why the dance that my paternal uncle (Governor Mimiko) has commenced on at Oja Oba this evening?

Also before my paternal uncle (The governor) finishes his dance at Oja Oba this night, I want to remind him that the chief judge of the FCT had three weeks ago announced that “filing an appeal” will no longer nullify any existing ruling. He added that the beneficiary of such ruling must be allowed to enjoy his judgment before a substantive appeal is decided against him.

Crime / EFCC Seize Man's Filling Station & Complex For Failing To Prove Source Of Wealth by Oladipos(m): 11:20am On Nov 05, 2016
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has seized a filling station and a shopping complex from a self-acclaimed building engineer, Abdullahi Rilwan, for failing to explain where he got the money to buy the properties.
The EFCC Act Section 71 (B) gives the commission the power to commence investigations into the property of any person if it appears to the EFCC that the person’s lifestyle and extent of properties are not justified by law.
The EFCC said in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, that Rilwan was also arrested for offences bordering on operating a land racketeering syndicate, criminal conspiracy, unlawful possession of classified documents, obtaining by false pretence and money laundering.
According to the commission, the suspect was first accosted in the Kuje Area Council of Abuja during a separate investigation into the $2.1bn arms procurement fraud.
Detectives were said to have visited the area to verify the ownership of several properties suspected to be proceeds of money laundering.
In the course of investigating the ownership of a filling station and a shopping complex both still under construction located along Pegi Road, in the Kuje Area Council, operatives gathered that Rilwan was in charge of the construction work.
The statement added, “Rilwan, who was subsequently engaged, denied ownership of the station, but confirmed he was the engineer in charge of the construction work. He admitted to being the owner of the shopping complex. He also told operatives that he was the owner of two companies, Kaibo Oil and Gas and Kaibo Properties, but could not account for the source of wealth.
“A visit to his office, however, revealed that he was involved in several shady and suspicious business transaction deals.”
It was learnt that the revelation made EFCC operatives to beam its searchlight on Rilwan’s business activities. Subsequently, on October 31, a search and arrest warrant was executed at his Kuje residence.
The statement added, “The search unearthed several implicating documents in his custody, many of which he used to sell plots of land. Properties recovered from his residence in Kuje, include letter-head papers in the name of Kuje Area Council allocating plots of land, an ‘Irrevocable Power of Attorney’ in favour of Air Commodore Bassy Inyang, a ‘Right of Occupancy’ document granted to Henryville Farms, Abuja, among other implicating documents.
“The filling station and the complex are currently under investigation, and he would be charged to court as soon as the investigations are concluded.”

A new delicacy may have hopped on to the Nigerian menu especially in the northern part of the country as traders from across the country are queuing up to buy frogs in Kano state. The market is at Dorawa Salau Kadawa, a village in Garun Mallam local government area of Kano state

According to Premium Times Frog is a delicacy in some parts of Nigeria Although in the north, people from different parts of Nigeria visit the market to purchase frogs in large quantities to take back home.

It was also gathered that the buyers have erected camps at the village and their activities have had a positive effect on the village’s economy.
However, some of the patrons spoken to said the trade in frogs is not a new line of business. One Sadikatu Ajiboye said she has been in the business for 15 years.

According to her, she was bringing kolanut up north to Kano, until she realized that frog meat have a greater turnover in the south.

She said a small carton of the reptile fetched as much as N5000, with a piece sold at N200. She distributes the delicacy across states in the South-west, South-east and South-south, adding that people even paid upfront for the frogs.

On his part, one Solomon Nwafor from Abia state said he is a hunter of frogs in the village in Kano. Nwafor said he wakes up as early as possible in the morning to hunt, and sometime late in the evening too.
Nwafor said he makes an average of N20,000 weekly in sales of the frogs. He also spoke about the relationship between the frog marketers and the villagers.
His words: “Because of the understanding that exists between us, we the frog marketers and our Hausa (hosts), our business has kept growing by the day with more people coming to purchase. Some (patrons) even export to Asia.”

Politics / Ondo Election: Elegbeleye Dumps PDP (photos) by Oladipos(m): 8:30pm On Oct 29, 2016
A former Deputy Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Sports who was also a former Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, on Saturday dumped the Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State, attributing the decision to personal reasons.

His resignation letter, which was formally tendered to the Ondo State chairman of the PDP through its Chairman, Akoko North East Local Government in Ikare-Akoko, was obtained by journalists in Abuja.

The resignation letter by Elegbeleye, who was also a former Director-General of the National Sports Commission, was entitled: “Re: Resignation of my Membership of Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State.”

The letter reads, “I write to inform you of the resignation of my membership of Peoples Democratic Party effective from the date indicated in this letter. This decision is personal and is without prejudice to the existing political situation in Ondo State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party.

“I sincerely thank the party leaders at all levels for the relationship that existed between us all this while. Thank you, Otunba (Hon) Gbenga Elegbeleye.”

But a source close to him, who pleaded anonymity, said he may have struck a deal with the All Progressives Congress, ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

“Otunba (Hon) Gbenga Elegbeleye may have struck a deal with the APC and in a few days time may be moving to join them because that is where it is happening. He will officially and publicly announce his intention in a short while. I do not want to say more than this. Let us keep our fingers crossed.”

Technology Market / Cheapest Wind Turbine That Can Power An Entire House For The Cost Of An Iphone by Oladipos(m): 6:56am On Oct 25, 2016
For the cost of an iPhone, you can now buy a wind turbine that can power an entire house for lifetime

Indian startup Avant Garde Innovations has developed a low-cost wind turbine that can generate 3-5 kW hours of electricity daily.

Soon after assuming office, Kerala (southern state of India) Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan kicked up a storm by publicly supporting the Athirappilly hydro electric project, which environmentalists said, if implemented, would create ecologic imbalance in the area and destroy the Athirappilly waterfalls, the largest natural waterfalls in the state.

It is not that the government is oblivious to the impact that the project could make, but it says it has no option but to leverage existing means to check the growing power crisis in Kerala, which partially depends on the private sector for electricity.

Things are no different in other states either. While Kerala has attained almost 100 per cent electrical coverage, many parts of India still remain in the dark. For a large portion of the Indian population, electricity to this day remains a distant dream.

Enter two siblings who want to make India’s energy crisis a thing of the past. The duo has developed a new solution they say will not even slightly impact the ecological balance.

Avant Garde Innovations, the startup founded by siblings Arun and Anoop George from Kerala, has come up with a low-cost wind turbine that can generate enough electricity to power an entire house for a lifetime. The size of a ceiling fan, this wind turbine can generate 5 kWh/kW per day — with just a one-time cost of US$750.

“Our goal is to eliminate energy poverty, reduce dependence on struggling state power grids and create energy self sufficiency for all the needy ones through distributed, localised and affordable renewable energy. In doing so, we believe we can collectively usher in our world a cleaner environment, new economic prosperity and social change,” reads the company ‘What We Do’ statement.

“Our first offering is a highly affordable small wind turbine suitable for residential, commercial, agricultural, village electrification and other uses, which is aimed for a market launch during 2016.”

Incorporated in 2015, Avant Garde claims to be a startup with a ‘green’ heart and soul.

For the startup, opportunity is massive. India is the world’s sixth largest energy consumer, accounting for 3.4 per cent of global energy consumption. Federal governments in India, and the central government for that matter, are unable to bear the huge infrastructural cost required to bring electricity to remote villages.

Erecting electric posts and electric lines require huge investments that could cost millions of dollars.

This is where Avant Garde comes into picture. “When small wind turbine generating 1kW energy costs INR 3-7 lakh (US$4,000-10,000), our company plans to sell it at less than NR 50,000 (about US$750). Costs will decrease further through mass production,” Arun said in an interview to The Times of India.

The company launched its pilot project at a church in the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram in January this year. The small wind turbine prototype that it has developed is highly scalable for power capacities of 300 kW or even higher, Arun told e27.

“Our passionate aim is to introduce innovative, affordable and sustainable solutions that take renewable energy self sufficiency and energy empowerment to the next level through a distributed and decentralised approach using pioneering strategies the world has not witnessed yet,” the company says.

This revolutionary product has also won them a spot in the Top 20 Cleantech Innovations in India. The company has also made it to the list of 10 clean energy companies from India for the “UN Sustainable Energy For All” initiative under the one billion dollar clean energy investment opportunity directory.

According to the Global Wind Energy Council, the country ranks 4th in terms of global installed wind power capacity, after China, the US, and Germany.

Maybe, if Avant Garde Innovations takes off, Kerala can keep the Athirappilly waterfalls untouched.
