Nairaland / General / Ondo Bans Unions'/associations' Activities Over Public Exploitation by Oladipos(m): 2:58pm On Sep 09, 2021
Press Release

Ondo Bans Unions'/Associations' Activities Over Public Exploitation

The Ondo State Government has taken measures to protect residents in the state amid soaring costs and incessant increases in prices of goods and services by artisans including farm produce and food items.

In this regard, the state government has barred all Trading Unions and Associations under the umbrella of Ondo State United Artisan Group, from fixing and enforcing uniform prices of goods and services being sold/rendered by their members and non-members.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo said the decision was taken in the overall socio-economic interest of the people of the State.

The statement:

"Government had before now, watched with discomfort and dismay, the economic suffocation of the people with unimaginable increases in prices of goods and services in markets, shops and other sales outlets across the state.

"Even without due regard for market forces, it is obvious that associations and unions are largely behind this unwholesome act.

"The state government has decided to act decisively even as the public deserves protection from this undesirable exploitation under some guises.

"Therefore, fixing market prices and imposing fixed exorbitant prices on the people under the guise of association or union must be stopped forthwith.

"Accordingly, as part of the measures, Individuals, Artisans, Traders and providers of services as well as farmers are henceforth allowed to operate, sell their produce and render any service in any part of the state as they may deem profitable, based on the principle of demand and supply and prevailing market forces. This is just as membership of associations and unions remains voluntary as provided for in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

"Consequently, Government's right to regulate the activities of Trading Associations and Artisan groups has to be invoked in the interest of residents. Therefore, on no account should any Union/Association fix or enforce prices of goods and services.

"Similarly, there shall be no sale of tickets to Artisans/Traders by any Association/Union without due approval of the state Government through the Internal Revenue Service”.

"All concerned are, therefore, advised to adhere strictly to this directive as any person or group found to be flouting it will be made to face the full weight of the extant laws.

"It is to be noted too that this directive takes effect from TODAY in all markets and sales outlets across the 18 LGAs of the state".

Crime / Another "MMM" Company Elope With Millions Of Naira In Ilesha (photos) by Oladipos(m): 6:46pm On Apr 19, 2019
WE'VE BEEN DUPED AGAIN IN IJESHA: OUR GREED KILLED US AGAIN

Like 4 months ago, a particular strange Company called "QUALITY CAPITAL MANAGEMENT NIG LTD" entered the city of Ilesa from nowhere. They firstly settled an office in Irojo and later moved to Okesa, the former Co - Operative Bank building. The company recruited Ijesha youths as staffs, they painted their office well with nice colours of paints, they put our President's portrait and that of the governor on the wall of their offices.

The major business they claim they do is "LOAN and INVESTMENT". They ask you to bring your money and get back 50% return in 15 days. They also give out soft loan up to the tune of #500,000 to individuals. Infact, you must go to Court to swear an affidavit that you want to borrow from them.

I visited their office on Monday this week and I was still there yesterday to inquire more of them while their staff and agents claimed they invest the money on bitcoin and other investments which they never disclosed. I tried to argue with them just yesterday as a learned fellow on cryptocurrency that is never possible to make that money. I saw more than enough people of different calibres, market women, farmers, Okada riders, teachers, Local government staffs, old and young etc bringing their thousands and millions of naira in cash to invest there. Surprisingly, the most gullible ones bringing their money to invest there even saw me as a stupid person who is not ready to succeed with the level of arguments I put on the staff of the company yesterday which they couldn't attend to.

To call the story short, I was on my way driving to roundabout Ilesa just about an hour ago when a darling one called me that these people are gone. I argued on phone that it was not possible until I got there myself to see. Lo and behold, they have duped us again out of our greediness. I saw people crying, putting blames on others who invited them to the fraudulent company, I saw people cursing themselves etc. THE COMPANY HAD ELOPED!

Now, who do we blame for this loss and stupidity? OUR MILLIONS OF NAIRA IS GONE AGAIN. I learnt some of our people are now presently on admission at different hospitals battling with the shock.

Celebrities / The Origin Of Mammy Market In Army Barracks by Oladipos(m): 7:00am On Jan 13, 2017
(I don't know the right section to put it but Mr Moderator can do the needful) grin

What is now known as "Mammy Market" in all barracks nationwide, came to be as a result of the industry of Mrs Anthony Ochefu. Thanks to an Idoma local brew called "enyi". Now, nobody remembers to recognise this history maker and accord the honour due to her.

In 1959, Mammy Ode, a young girl from Jericho-Ugboju in the present Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State was married to Anthony Aboki Ochefu, a young Non-Commissioned military officer who had just been posted to Enugu from Abeokuta. They were quartered at the Army Barracks, Abakpa, Enugu. To beat idleness and perhaps earn some money to support her young family, Mrs. Mammy Ochefu established a business of selling soft drinks. She also prepared gruel, which is popularly called 'Umu or enyi' in Idoma, or kunu in Hausa, for sale to the soldiers in the barrack to help quench their thirst and energise them.

She soon became popular with selling "umu" as soldiers trooped to her house to buy the local brew made from guinea corn. Some of her customers were officers, who always send their batmen to buy the gruel for them, Monday through Friday and even during the weekend when they are not working.

Somehow, one of the Non-Commissioned Officers, the RSM, did not flow with the enthusiasm, which Mammy’s gruel generated among other military men in the barracks. He complained that the stuff was attracting flies into the barracks and ordered Mrs. Mammy Ochefu to stop its production and sale.

Though disappointed at the order of the RSM, she stopped the production and sale of "umu" in the barrack. For weeks, Mrs. Mammy Ochefu agonized over the fate of her business, just as officers and men of the Nigerian Army who enjoyed her brew because of its freshness and nutritional value lamented over the situation.

From several quarters, pressure mounted on the RSM for a reversal of the order. After a while, he succumbed to and directed that a section of the barrack be reserved for Mrs. Mammy Ochefu to produce and sell her "umu".

Her joy knew no bound few days after a section of the barracks was allocated to her for the purpose of selling the Idoma local brew within the barrack. She built a small stall for her business and soon, her business began to boom. Most of her customers booked far in advance for the quantity of "umu" they want to buy. Before noon, she would have finished selling the available "umu" for the day.

Soon, other women in the barracks became inspired by her industrious nature and tapped into her industry and started selling other items like burukutu, pito, palm wine, kain-kain and other alcoholic beverages in addition to peppersoup and other delights for the relaxation of the rant and file in the evenings when they close from work and they are permitted to drink alcoholic beverages.

It was not long before that portion of the barracks became known as Mammy Market. It also became a policy to establish markets inside or near military barracks in the country, initially for the exclusive use of officers and men of the rank and file.

Today, no visit to Abuja, the Federal Capital City, is complete without a taste of fresh fish in one of the Mammy Markets, especially the one attached to Abacha Barrack. Similar markets attached to paramilitary barracks are also called Mammy Markets.

After General Yakubu Gowon was overthrown in a Military putsch, Anthony Aboki Ochefu, then a Colonel, was posted to East Central State as Military Governor. So Mrs. Mammy Ochefu and her husband returned to Enugu as the First Family. As First Lady Mammy Ochefu visits the site where Mammy Market started about sixteen years earlier.

It must also be stressed too that in retirement, Colonel Anthony Aboki Ochefu and his wife incorporated a company called Mammy Markets, which was into haulage and trading.

Mrs. Mammy Ochefu is alive and lives at Otukpo as one of the prized legends of our time.
