The Antipode would travel at 24 times the speed of sound and could get from New York to Sydney in half an hour. In today's world of on-demand services and non-stop connectivity, a seven-hour flight across the Atlantic can feel interminable. But a new design for a luxury business jet could get you from London to New York in 11 minutes – and from New York to Sydney in half an hour. The Antipode is a 10-seater aircraft that would be able to travel at 12,427 miles per hour. The concept is classed as Mach 24 – which means it travels 24 times faster than the speed of sound, 12 times faster than Concorde and one Mach number below re-entry speed.Charles Bombardier, the Canadian inventor, released a concept design last year for the Skreemr, a jet that would be able to fly at Mach 10 Travelling at 7,673 miles per hour, the 75-seater Skreemr would get from the UK to the east coast the US in around 30 minutes. "During time-sensitive crises, it would transport highly ranked officials across the globe in a matter of hours." Charles Bombardier However, Mr Bombardier confessed his concerns that materials "able to withstand the heat, pressure and structural stress" of the aircraft had not yet been invented. The sonic boom – the noise made when breaking the sound barrier – would also be a problem and is seen as one of the main contributors to the failure of Concorde. But Joseph Hazeltine, an aerospace engineer at Wyle, which works with NASA among others, approached Mr Bombardier with a solution to these problems, called "long penetration mode" or LPM. The idea is that a nozzle on the Antipode's nose would suck in air, creating counter-flowing jets of air over the surface of the plane, which would cool down the aircraft and muffle the sonic boom. The Antipode would take off using the force of rocket boosters attached to its wings, which would detach from the aircraft at 40,000ft when the jet had reached Mach 5. The aircraft’s onboard computer would then ignite its supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) engine and accelerate up to Mach 24 at 40,000ft. The plane's wings would have enough lift to glide and land on a standard 6,000ft runway, Mr Bombardier said. Despite the advances made from the Skreemr to the Antipode, several problems remain – not least that a scramjet engine has yet to be developed. And Mr Bombardier expects that each plane could cost well over $150m (£105m) to build. The Antipode would be able to land on a standard 6,000 foot runway ImaginActiv "The Antipode could be used as business or military aircraft to transport two highly ranked officials across the globe (up to 20,000km) in less than an hour," Mr Bombardier said. "During time-sensitive crises, it would transport highly ranked officials across the globe in a matter of hours." The race for speedier air travel has taken off since the Concorde was grounded in 2003. Airbus recently filed for a patent for a supersonic jet that could cut the flight time from London to New York to one hour, while other aviation companies such as Spike and Aerion are working on similar developments. Last year, Nasa pledged $2.3m in funding for research into supersonic flight. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/industry/engineering/12127992/This-private-jet-would-get-you-from-London-to-New-York-in-11-minutes.html

PLEASE READ AND COMMENT Robbers enter a house, asks for all the money and valuables. After they collect what they can, they give the man of the house a gun with instructions to shoot his wife or else he be shot himself. The man gets the gun, points it at his wife and hesitates. He is thinking of what he has gone through in life with his wife and how she has suffered and sacrificed for him. He hands back the gun and says, “I am sorry I can’t do this… “The boss of the robbers silently grabs the gun from him and passes it on to the wife with the same instruction. The wife gets the gun and without any single hesitation points to her husband’s head and pulls the trigger. But alas, the gun had no bullets in it. The robbers get their gun and walk out of the house laughing. QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION 1. If you were the man in that house how would you react towards your wife? 2. If you were the wife, what explanation can you give to your husband! 3. If you were invited to bring peace between this couples, what advice would you give? Drop your Comments & ask your friends too, this should really be an interesting topic to discuss ... |

Ironsi fatally did not bring the failed plotters to trial as required by then-military law and as advised by most northern and western officers, rather, coup plotters were maintained in the military on full pay and some were even promoted while apparently awaiting trial. The coup, despite its failure and since no repercussion was meted out to coup plotters and since no significant Igbo political leaders were affected was widely perceived as having benefited mostly the Igbo. Most of the known coup plotters were Igbo and the military and political leadership of Westerrn and Northern regions had been largely bloodily eliminated while Eastern military/political leadership was largely untouched. However Ironsi, himself an Igbo, was thought to have made numerous attempts to please Northerners. The other event that also fuelled the so-called "Igbo conspiracy" was the killing of Northern leaders, and the killing of the Colonel Shodeinde's pregnant wife by the coup executioners. Despite the overwhelming contradictions of the coup being executed by mostly Northern soldiers (such as John Atom Kpera, later military governor of Benue State), the killing of Igbo soldier Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Unegbe by coup executioners, and Ironsi's termination of an Igbo-led coup, the ease by which Ironsi stopped the coup led to suspicion that the Igbo coup plotters planned all along to pave the way for Ironsi to take the reins of power in Nigeria. Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu became military governor of the Eastern Region at this time.[48] On 24 May 1966, the military government issued Unification Decree #34, which would have replaced the federation with a more centralized system. The Northern bloc found this decree intolerable.[49] In the face of provocation from the Eastern media which repeatedly showed humiliating posters and cartoons of the slain northern politicians, on the night of 29 July 1966, northern soldiers at Abeokuta barracks mutinied, thus precipitating a counter-coup, which have already been in the planning stages. The counter-coup led to the installation of Lieutenant-Colonel Yakubu Gowon as Supreme Commander of the Nigerian Armed Forces. Gowon was chosen as a compromise candidate. He was a Northerner, a Christian, from a minority tribe, and had a good reputation within the army. It seems that Gowon immediately faced not only a potential standoff with the East, but secession threats from the Northern and even the Western region.[50] The counter-coup plotters had considered using the opportunity to withdraw from the federation themselves. Ambassadors from Britain and the United States, however, urged Gowon to maintain control over the whole country. Gowon followed this plan, repealing the Unification Decree, announcing a return to the federal system |
On 15 January 1966, Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna and other junior Army officers (mostly majors and captains) attempted a coup d'état. The two major political leaders of the north, the prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and the Premier of the northern region, Sir Ahmadu Bello were executed by Major Nzeogwu. Also murdered was Sir Ahmadu Bello's wife and officers of Northern extraction. Meanwhile, the President, Sir Nnamdi Azikiwe, an Igbo, was on an extended vacation in the West Indies. He did not return until days after the coup. There was widespread suspicion that the Igbo coup plotters had tipped him and other Igbo leaders off regarding the impending coup. In addition to the killings of the Northern political leaders, the Premier of the Western region , Ladoke Akintola and Yoruba senior military officers were also killed. The coup, also referred to as "The Coup of the Five Majors", has been described in some quarters as Nigeria's only revolutionary coup.[42] This was the first coup in the short life of Nigeria's nascent second democracy. Claims of electoral fraud were one of the reasons given by the coup plotters. This coup was however seen not as a revolutionary coup by other sections of Nigerians , especially in the Northern and Western sections and latter revisioninsts of Nigerian coups, mostly from Eastern part of Nigeria have belatedly maintained to widespread disbelief amongst Western and Southern Nigerians that the majors sought to spring Action Group leader Obafemi Awolowo out of jail and make him head of the new government. From there, they would dismantle the Northern-dominated power structure. However, their efforts to take power were thwarted by Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, an Igbo and loyalist head of the Nigerian Army, who suppressed coup operations in the South. The majors surrendered, and Aguiyi-Ironsi was declared head of state on 16 January.[43][44] Aguyi-Ironsi suspended the constitution and dissolved parliament. He then abolished the regional confederated form of government and pursued unitary like policies heithero favoured by the NCNC, having apparently been influenced by some NCNC political philosophy. He however appointed Colonel Hassan Katsina, son of Katsina emir Usman Nagogo, to govern the Northern Region, indicating some willingness to maintain cooperation with this bloc.[45] He also preferentially released northern politicians from jail (enabling them to plan his forthcoming overthrow).[46] Aguyi-Ironsi rejected a British offer of military support but promised to protect British interests; however … Britain participated in overthrow? |

Aftermath Edit Acting President Nwafor Orizu made a nationwide broadcast, after he had brief President Nnamdi Azikiwe on the phone the decision of the cabinet, announcing the cabinet's "voluntary" decision to transfer power to the armed forces. Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi then made his own broadcast, accepting the "invitation". On January 17, Major General Ironsi established the Supreme Military Council in Lagos and effectively suspended the constitution.[2] All of the coup leaders, except for Maj. Ifeajuna who had fled to Ghana, were placed under arrest. Maj. Nzeogwu handed over control of the Northern Region to Ironsi's appointed designee, Maj. Hassan Katsina, before being escorted by Lt Col. Conrad Nwawo to Lagos where he surrendered to Maj Gen. Ironsi. General Ironsi used the coup as a pretext to suspend the Federal Government and bring an end to Nigeria's first republic.[citation needed] In the months following the coup it was widely noted that four of the five army Majors who executed the coup were Igbo and that General Ironsi who took over power was also Igbo. It was feared that the Igbo had set out to take control of the country and in the North of Nigeria the fear of Igbo dominance became intense. This resulted in the massacres of Igbo which peaked on the 29 May, 29 July and 29 September 1966. The Ironsi government's efforts to abolish the federal structure and the renaming the country the Republic of Nigeria on 24 May 1966 raised tensions and led to another coup by largely northern officers in July 1966, which established the leadership of Major General Yakubu Gowon. |
In Ibadan Edit In Ibadan the premier of the Western Region Chief Samuel Akintola had been forewarned that soldiers were coming to get him. Akintola heard rumors of a coup and traveled to Kaduna to warn the premier of the Northern Region, Ahmadu Bello. After failing to raise any urgency in Bello, Akintola returned to Ibadan and armed himself with a rifle. His deputy Chief Fani Kayode was first arrested by the coupists. After his arrest, Kayode's wife informed Akintola of what had happened. Shortly afterward a detachment of soldiers led by Capt. Emmanuel Nwobosi arrived at Akintola's residence. Upon sighting the soldiers, Akintola opened fire, wounding a few of them including Capt. Nwobosi. After fighting for his life and engaging the soldiers in a gunfight, Akintola was shot dead by Nwobosi's men. |
