Politics / Idps In Maiduguri Demands Return To Bama by Olaniawo20: 4:27pm On Sep 24, 2017
The Bama Initiative for Human Development, an NGO, on Sunday in Maiduguri staged a peaceful demonstration demanding the return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their respective communities in Bama.
The group’s Chairman, Alhaji Muhammad Hassan, said that the IDPs would want to return and continue their normal activities in view of the prevailing peace in the state.
Hassan noted that about 70 per cent of the reconstruction and rehabilitation projects had been completed in the area, saying that they were tired of living as displaced persons.
“We are in Maiduguri for more than three years without meaningful means of livelihoods. The condition of our people is pathetic.
“The elongation in the process of returning displaced persons to their homes is moving at a snail pace and exposed them to unbearable conditions.
“We could no longer send our children to school; many have died of hunger and starvation. Most of us live in host communities and no one is supporting us,” Hassan stated.
He said that most of them were traumatised, coupled with serious neglect and poor living condition, adding that they are ready to trek back to Bama.

Politics / Inaccurate Billing Responsible For Irregular Power Supply In Nigeria – Osinbajo by Olaniawo20: 12:50pm On Sep 24, 2017
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said that the problem of irregular power supply in Nigeria is caused by inaccurate billing system resulting from insufficient metering machines.
Osinbajo made the remarks on Saturday in Onna local government area of Akwa Ibom while inaugurating an Electric Metering Factory as part of activities marking the 30th anniversary of Akwa Ibom creation.
The vice president said that Nigeria’s economic development hinged on effective power supply, lamenting that Distribution Companies (DISCOs) had not been able to collect tariffs because of non-availability of meters.
“The electric metering factory is an important project. Inadequate power is the major obstacle to full economic development in Nigeria.

Politics / Biafra: Why Buhari Did Not Speak On IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu At UN General Assembly by Olaniawo20: 9:19am On Sep 23, 2017
The Presidency has revealed why President Muhammadu Buhari did not speak on the activities of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) during his speech at the 72nd United Nations General Assembly.

Buhari’s speech came under wide criticism for avoiding some of the topical issues in the country like agitation and the ongoing military activities in the South East.

Speaking in New York on the non-inclusion of IPOB in his principal’s speech, Special Adviser to Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina said the matter is an internal issue.

Adesina said the issue is not a UN matter, adding that government was “firmly dealing with” it.

“The IPOB situation is an internal matter, which the government is dealing firmly with.

“It is not a UN matter. It is those who overrate themselves that think something like that must be brought up at a global platform like the UN.

Politics / Obiano Never Said, ‘no Hiding Place For IPOB In Anambra’ – Obigwe by Olaniawo20: 10:45am On Sep 19, 2017
The national coordinator APGA Media Warriors Forum, Evang Chinedu Obigwe , Tuesday, urged the general public to disregard the fake information making rounds in some mainstream and social media which was credited to the governor of Anambra state, Dr Willie Obiano, noting that Obiano never said that ‘There will be no hiding place for IPOB in Anambra state’, especially during the stakeholders meeting he organized for Anambra people.
In a statement issued Obigwe said that the purveyors of this fake news are Obiano’s political antagonists, blackmailers and mischief makers who concocted all types of falsehood to score cheap political points against the governor.
“Election is around the corner and in that regards mischief makers and those whose stock in trade is blackmail will be concocting all types of falsehood to score cheap political point against the Governor”, he said.
Recall that the commissioner of information, Mr Tony was quoted by newsmen to have said in a statement issued, that Gov. Obiano opined that the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, have no hiding place in Anambra state.
The statement which went viral online was refuted by the governor who took no other decision on the south east governors proscription of IPOB except the collective decision made by the South east Governors Forum.
“In a clarification, Obigwe said that Governor Obiano used the opportunity of the stakeholders meeting to explain the reason behind the decision of Southeast Governor’s forum to ban IPOB in the region and that the Governor did not take any other position outside that of the collective decision of his fellow Southeast Governor’s”, he said.
He urged the general public to ignore the fake news because those behind it are masters of ‘falsehood concoction’ whose aim is to incite the people against the Governor and score cheap political points against him.
However, Obigwe charged the likes of Sen. Andy Uba, Ifeanyi Ubah and other aspirants from Anambra south to support Gov. Obiano’s second term ambition in the interest of Anambra people.

Health / Communicable Diseases, Others Take Deadly Toll On Nigerians — STUDY by Olaniawo20: 10:34am On Sep 19, 2017
A new Annual Global Burden of Disease, GBD, and study has shown that more Nigerians are dying of communicable diseases including malaria, diarrhoea, lower respiratory diseases and HIV among others,
According to the study, the top five causes of premature death in Nigeria are malaria, diarrhoeal diseases, HIV, neonatal encephalopathy, and lower respiratory infection.
The study which is the world’s largest scientific collaboration on population health also found that the life expectancy in Nigeria is also increasing, infants and children are at particular risk from these diseases, and neonatal ailments like sepsis and encephalopathy kill thousands of Nigerian infants.
It revealed new trends in illnesses, deaths, and risk factors leading to poor health, adding that these diseases are still taking the lives of far too many Nigerians.
However, globally, it notes that countries have saved more lives over the past decade, especially among children under age five, but persistent health problems, such as obesity, conflict, and mental illness, comprise a “triad of troubles,” and prevent people from living long and healthy life.

All Progressives Congress in Kaduna State has endorsed the re-elections of President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Nasir El-Rufai in 2019.
This is even as the governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El Rufai, apologized to members of All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state for any offence any government or party official may have caused them in the discharge of their duties.
The APC in the state made this known at a stakeholders’ meeting with party leaders from the 255 electoral wards of the state on Saturday.
The meeting at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Hall, Kaduna was attended by Governor El-Rufai, two of the senators from the state, members of the House of Representatives and the State House of Assembly, as well as political appointees at both federal and state levels.
The third senator from the state, Shehu Sani, who has been in a protracted dispute with Mr. El-Rufai, stayed away from the meeting.
Sani, a vocal critic of Mr. El-Rufai, belongs to a separate faction of the APC in Kaduna.
The state acting chairman of the party, Shuaibu Idris, who presided over the meeting, thanked those who attended for standing by the party to overcome threats to its unity in the state.

Politics / Soldiers Launch Manhunt For Nnamdi Kanu As Probe Of Foreign Links Begins by Olaniawo20: 3:42am On Sep 17, 2017
TROOPS yesterday launched a manhunt for Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu , barely 24 hours after the group’s proscription.

Nothing has been heard about Kanu since the proscription.

Some sources yesterday said he had gone underground.

Kanu is on bail for the alleged treason charges preferred against him.

The Nation learnt yesterday that his bail sureties might be asked by the security agencies to account for him.

Besides, security agencies are probing IPOB leader’s alleged foreign links.

Investigators are said to be analysing a video clip of Kanu and a Turkish citizen as part of the probe.

A source, while confirming the search for Kanu, said: “Troops have been given a firm order to fish out and arrest the IPOB leader. As a prelude to it, the Defence Headquarters on Friday declared IPOB as a terrorist organisation.

“Intelligence has, however, revealed that Kanu might have gone underground. As I speak with you, troops have actually searched his house and he was not found there.Troops have a mandate to arrest him wherever he might be.”

Asked what if he is not found the source said: “ We might follow legal process by holding his sureties responsible. These sureties will have to produce him.”

On the probe of Kanu’s alleged foreign links , another source said:”We are looking into the allegations of foreign support for Kanu. We are doing a profiling of his foreign contacts. We have some clues but we need to dig deeper.”

The Nation can also confirm that government insisted on non-withdrawal of soldiers from Abia State to avoid a situation whereby the IPOB will “take advantage and unleash mayhem” on innocent citizens.

Sources said the presidency overruled Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu on the withdrawal of troops because the police alone could not cope with the “grave security” situation.

“The governor wanted a political solution to a military matter. But the federal government cannot watch and allow the situation to degenerate,” one of the sources said.

“Before Kanu was released on bail, these same governors in the Southeast, political leaders from the zone and others prevailed on the federal government to allow him home.

“Some of these governors and Igbo leaders made a commitment that they would ensure that Kanu did not abuse his bail conditions.

“The government bent backwards and ensured that Kanu was released on bail. But you can see what has happened. All those who gave the guarantee that Kanu would respect his bail bond have been made to look foolish.

“Intelligence on IPOB revealed that without troops on the streets, the situation would have been worse.”

The Embassy of the United States has asked Americans in Abia and Plateau states to review their security and maintain a high level of vigilance.

The Embassy’s cautionary note was contained in its travel alert.

It said: “Curfews have been declared in Abia and Plateau states because of violent attacks accompanied by threats of reprisals.

“Exercise caution in these areas; review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates.

“Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.”

The National Leader (Southsouth) of Action Democratic Party (ADP), Senator Roland Owie, yesterday faulted the declaration of IPOB as a terrorist organisation.

In a statement in Abuja, Owie said the declaration smacked of double standards.

He said: “Now that IPOB has been declared ‘Terrorist group, the government should immediately declare Fulani herdsmen, Terrorist group.”

Owie added: “I urge President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government to walk the way of justice and equity in handling the affairs of Nigeria and stop pretending that all is well.

“The gravest mistake of non-equitable administrations all over the world is the denial of wrongdoings on their part. Unfortunately for such administrations, they forget that God cannot be mocked.”

“Gravitation will help a person if he builds the side of his house straight and plumb; but gravitation will oppose him and make his house fall down if he builds it out of plumb.”

Education / ASUU May Call Off Strike This Week by Olaniawo20: 3:30am On Sep 17, 2017
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may call off its one-month old strike this week.
Its president, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, told our correspondent on phone the union has not called off the strike because it was still ironing out some grey areas in the agreement with federal government.
He assured the strike would be called off as soon as the grey areas were resolved.
The federal government had promised to meet demand of ASUU with release of about N220 billion not later than October 2017 to fund the revitalisation of federal universities as well as pay shortfall of salaries and accumulated allowances.
Ogunyemi said: “We are still trying to iron out some grey areas with the government. Once we finish doing that, we will address the press.”
It was gathered ASUU’s leadership had another meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige last Friday to report the decisions of its members in accordance with the agreements between both parties.
At a conciliatory meeting with government, the union had agreed to go back to its member to take a decision on the offer of government and revert back with a view to calling off or suspending the strike.

Politics / US Breaks Silence On Growing Tension In Nigeria by Olaniawo20: 7:32am On Sep 16, 2017
The United States Diplomatic Mission has broken silence on growing tension in the country.

In a tweet on Friday, the United States Mission to Nigeria said that it is joining well-meaning Nigerians to sue for peace, calling for an end to violence in the country.

“The U.S. Mission to Nigeria joins the calls of Nigerian leaders and citizens across the country for an end to violence.#OutofManyOne,” the Tweet reads.

The call by the U.S. Mission came the same day South East governors held an emergency meeting in Enugu to address issues of security in the zone, especially the recent clash between members of IPOB and the military in Abia state.
