Events / “your Chieftaincy Title Means Nothing” – Cee-c Slams Whitemoney, (VIDEO) by olisaelokaa: 9:42am On Aug 05, 2023
White Money and Cee-C recently engaged in a mild banter.

BBNaija All Stars housemate, Whitemoney was forced to express himself after his fellow housemate, Cee-C talked down on his prestigious Chieftaincy title.

After the pool party, Whitemoney took the opportunity to address the issue with Cee-C, expressing his shock and disappointment at the way she had been playfully insulting him since their time in the house.

He cited several instances where she had used offensive language, including the use of the ‘F’ word.

Frustrated with Cee-C’s attitude towards him, Whitemoney proudly mentioned his title as a man of distinction in his village and his role as a chieftaincy holder.

However, Cee-C was dismissive of Whitemoney’s pride in his chieftaincy title. She challenged the significance of such titles, suggesting that they can be bought and paid for. Cee-C gave an example from her hometown to support her argument.

She added that his chieftaincy title means nothing.

Amid the discussion, Whitemoney attempted to explain himself not only to Cee-C but also to the other housemates. He believed that Cee-C’s behavior towards him would have been different if they were outside the confines of the Big Brother Naija house.

Cee-C on her part also bragged about the caliber of people she rolls with outside the house.

In previous news, a video of BBNaija All Stars housemates, Venita Akpofure and Adekunle enjoying each other’s warmth after lights out spurred reactions from viewers.

Venita who once opened up about being attracted to Adekunle could be seen lying on his bed.

Moments later, the mother of two gently took off the duvet and placed her leg on Adekunle’s body as they continued their night's rest.}

Nairaland / General / GSK Shutters Nigerian Operations After 50 Years, Citing Economic Downturn by olisaelokaa: 11:30am On Aug 04, 2023
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Consumer Nigeria Plc on Thursday disclosed that it will shut down its production line in Nigeria due to unfavourable economic situation.

The company said it plans to stop operations after evaluating the options for moving to a third-party distribution model for its pharmaceutical products.

The company is well-known for its products such as Augmentin, Neosporin, Panadol, Sensodyne, Advair, Ventolin, Theraflu, among others.

GSK Nigeria announced the development in a statement sent to the Nigeria Exchange Limited (NGX) on Thursday and signed by Frederick Ichekwai, the company secretary.

The company said it is working with its advisers to agree on next steps and plans to submit a scheme of arrangement to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which if approved, will see it return cash to shareholders except its parent company, GSK UK.

The company, which employs over 290 people, assured that all necessary legal proceedings would be met as regards employees and shareholders.

‘In our published Q2 results we disclosed that the GSK UK Group has informed GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Nigeria PLC of its strategic intent to cease commercialization of its prescription medicines and vaccines in Nigeria through the GSK local operating companies and transition to a third-party direct distribution model for its pharmaceutical products,” the statement reads.

“The Haleon Group has also separately informed the Board of its intent to terminate its distribution agreement in the coming months and to appoint a third-party distributor in Nigeria for the supply of its consumer healthcare products.

“For the above reasons, and having, together with GSK UK, evaluated various other options, the Board of GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Nigeria Plc has concluded that there is no alternative but to cease operations.

“Today we are briefing our employees whom we will treat fairly, respectfully and with care, meeting all applicable legal and consultation requirements.

“The Board is conscious that shareholders will have many questions; we have been working assiduously with our professional advisors to agree on next steps and we will be shortly submitting to the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) a draft Scheme of Arrangement which may, if approved, see shareholders other than GSK UK, receive an accelerated cash distribution and return of capital.

“The Board acknowledges the support of the GSK Group in its intentions to make this possible, full details of which we hope to publish shortly. In the meantime, however, we cannot give you assurance of the final terms of any scheme, or that any scheme will be approved by the SEC or by shareholders.

“Shareholders are advised to seek professional advice and continue to exercise caution when dealing in the company’s shares until a further announcement is made.”

One Mohammed Kazeem Beiwa has been sentenced to death for the murder of his neighbor in Kwara state.

Kazeem murdered the deceased identified as Olokose Ojo Olushola in Ilorin a few days before his wedding in 2021.

The accused was sentenced by Justice S. M. Akanbi of the Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin on Thursday.

The court also handed down 10 years imprisonment and an N100,000 fine each to his two other accomplices; Madu Jeremiah and Mohammed Chatta while the fourth defendant, Jimoh Abdulateef was set free by the Court for lack of diligent prosecution.

The four accused persons were arraigned before the court on eight count charges having been accused of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, culpable homicide, illegal possession of firearms, and illegal removal of human parts.

The prosecution led by the former Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of Kwara State, Senior Ibrahim Sulyman alleged that the four accused persons attacked and kidnapped the victim Olokose Ojo Olushola in his house a few days before his wedding in Ilorin and killed him sometime in 2021.

According to told the court, the accused persons after kidnapping, killing, and dismembering the victim, also negotiated for payment of ransom for his release from the family knowing he was dead already.

The prosecution at the trial of the case called nine witnesses and tendered several exhibits before the court.

Delivering judgment in the case on Monday, Justice Akanbi found three of the accused persons guilty of four of the criminal charges leveled against them.

He affirmed that “The defendants had caused the death of one Olokose Ojo Olushola sometime in March 2021, a couple of days before the deceased’s wedding ceremony.

Nairaland / General / UNICEF: 1.6 Million Children Out Of School In North East Nigeria by olisaelokaa: 11:06am On Aug 03, 2023
UNICEF is ready to share innovative methods learned from implementing these programs in the region.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that 1.6 million children in the North East are not attending school.

Phuong Nguyen, UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office in Maiduguri, revealed this during a Foundation Literacy and Numeracy in the North-East Seminar held in Maiduguri on Wednesday.

She stated that UNICEF is dedicated to leaving no child behind in its efforts to accelerate education delivery in Nigeria.

She emphasized the importance of collaboration among the government, UNICEF, donor agencies, and other development partners who are already committed to raising awareness of fundamental learning and are eager to share innovative methods learned from implementing these programs in the region.

She said;
At least 1.6 million children are out of school in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe States. Of those in school, 72% cannot read a simple text after grade 6. Without acquiring appropriate foundational and transferable skills, children fail to thrive in school and life.

Addressing the learning crises in Northeast, and Nigeria as a whole, requires us to examine the evidence of what works, and explore partnerships with the State, NGOs, development partners, and communities.

This seminar provides us with a platform to share evidence, and experiences and to renew our commitment to improving the learning outcomes of schoolgirls and boys.

Speaking at the seminar, Nguyen promised that UNICEF would bring together practitioners and experts, government officials, and civil society to discuss how Nigeria can best foster Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), with a special emphasis on Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL), Kanuri, Arithmetic and Reading Intervention (KARI), Reading and Numeracy Activity (RANA), and the Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP).

According to her, the seminar aims to raise awareness of FLN models and lessons learned from implementing fundamental learning programs in the North East, focusing on the region’s ongoing humanitarian-development nexus.

Nairaland / General / Lagos Government Probes The Case Of Dr Vwaere Who Died In An Elevator Crash by olisaelokaa: 9:12am On Aug 03, 2023
Lagos government probes the case of Dr Vwaere who died in an elevator crash, colleagues boycott duties

The General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island on Tuesday, reported that Dr Vwaere Diaso died after a lift she was in crashed, according to the Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association. Diaso was a medical officer undergoing training.

On Wednesday, the Lagos State Government said that a panel of investigation had been formed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the event. The government also vowed to punish anyone found to be at fault.

According to information received, Diaso was in the lift going to a dispatch rider to get lunch when the incident occurred.

She was taken to the hospital's emergency room where it was determined that she had passed away.

Following this, a protest rocked the hospital on Wednesday as her colleagues besieged the premises and grounded activities there.

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as, “I don’t want to die,” “Doctors’ lives matter,” “Justice for Vwaere,” “The system failed you, Diaso,” and “Here is Vwaere Diaso, she didn’t have to die for us to get it right.”

Diaso’s protesting colleagues shut the hospital’s main gate, the health service commission’s gate, and the Lagos Island Maternity Hospital’s gate.

They expressed displeasure over the death of their colleague while accusing the hospital management of negligence.

A patient, who was at the hospital for a check-up, told news reporters that the medical workers also refused to attend to patients as they were all grieving.

The patient who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “I was at the hospital around 7 am. Nobody attended to us. Her colleagues began the protest around 9 am, moving around the hospital and paralysing activities. Other medical workers at the hospital also downed tools.”

Reacting, the NMA, in a statement by the state Chairman, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, and Secretary, Ismail Ajibowo, directed all doctors working in the three government hospitals on Lagos Island to commence an indefinite strike.

“We direct all our doctors in the three government hospitals on the island to commence indefinite strike action until the investigations are completed and justice is served; we immediately direct our doctors in all the other government hospitals to scale down activities as a mark of respect for our dead colleague. Only emergency services should be rendered for the next five days,” the statement read in part.

Diaso’s colleague who spoke with one of our correspondents on condition of anonymity said the deceased only had two weeks to complete her horsemanship, adding that “on many occasions, the elevator had stopped while we were inside it.”

“We report every time. The elevator is supposed to carry 630kg maximum, that’s eight people. Once you open the elevator and see two people already, you just have to wait for the next batch. It was faulty and they knew about it. That’s why we’re not going to take this. She was a very diligent house officer. She was very hardworking,” he said.

Olumide Sogunle, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Information and Strategy, said in a statement on Wednesday that the administration was startled to learn about the occurrence.

A team of representatives from the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Lagos State Health Service Commission, Lagos State Safety Commission, and licensed Lift and Vertical Transportation Equipment experts have started an investigation, according to Sogunle.

"The Lagos State Government will ensure that anyone found to have been negligent by the report of the inquiry will face appropriate sanctions."

Additionally, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed sympathy to the deceased's family.

The governor issued a statement via @jidesanwoolu on X, saying, "In light of this tragedy, I have taken immediate action to initiate a thorough investigation into the cause of the mechanical failure."

Nairaland / General / Ex-ivory Coast President, Henri Konan Bedie Dies At 89 by olisaelokaa: 6:14pm On Aug 02, 2023
Former Ivory Coast president, Henri Konan Bedie, has died at the age of 89.

Badie, who dominated politics in the West African nation for a generation died on Tuesday.

The ex-president served as Ivory Coast’s second ever president after independence from France in 1960. He ruled from 1993 until an economic slump and allegations of corruption led to his ouster in a military coup in 1999.

He was long remembered – and in some parts reviled – for his role in promoting the issue of “ivoirite“, or Ivorian identity, which fueled tensions between those who considered themselves natives in the south and east, and the many foreign workers from neighboring countries long settled in the country’s north.

Bedie remained in politics until the end. At 86, he ran a losing race against longtime political rival President Alassane Ouattara in elections in 2020.

The cause of Bedie’s death was not immediately known. His spokesman could not be reached for comment.

Bedie was born on May 5, 1934 at Dadiekro, 300 kilometers (190 miles) east of the commercial capital Abidjan.

He excelled at school and was among 100 promising students picked in the early 1950s to study in France, where he gained a doctorate in economics at Poitiers University.

Sports / FIFA To Pay Super Falcons Directly Amid Corruption Concerns by olisaelokaa: 12:05pm On Aug 02, 2023
FIFA hails players for their feats.

The Federation International de Football Association (FIFA), has said it will not be paying the Super Falcons, the Nigerian senior women's national team, through the nation’s football governing body, the Nigerian football federation (NFF).

The development is not unconnected to the controversy and corruption that have dogged the payment of bonuses and monetary benefits that the players are entitled to.

The Super Falcons are participating in the ongoing FIFA Women's world cup in Australia and New Zealand. They will be facing England in the round of 16 after finishing second in group B behind the host nation, Australia.

Addressing the players after their match against Ireland on Monday, the Secretary-General of FIFA Ms Fatma Samoura noted that “it has been tough” and that they had to “face the reality of Nigeria.”

She informed the players that it is because of players like them that FIFA decided to pay prize money directly to players.

She, however, added that for the first time, the prize money would be paid to them – players – because of such realities.

Recall that former Arsenal player and football pundit Ian Wright called out the Nigeria Football Federation after the Super Falcon's historic win against Australia last Thursday, urging the NFF to pay them

“It is because of you that for the first time in the history of FIFA, the FIFA women's world cup prize money will be paid directly to you, the players,” Samoura said, amid cheers from the nine-time African champions.

After a stunning win against hosts Australia, Wright took to social media to send out his message of support for the Nigerians.

“Pay them!!!!!” he wrote, lending his voice to the country’s continuing dispute between players and governing body.

The issues surrounding the payment of bonuses and other financial benefits to players have become an integral part of Nigeria’s national football team.

It, however, became a serious issue in Nigerian women’s football during the preparation for the FIFA women's world cup with the players threatening to boycott their first match of the competition against Canada who are also in the middle of a pay dispute with their own FA seeking equal pay and support with the men’s team.

The manager Randy Waldrum was vocal in his criticisms of the treatment of his players.

His previous complaints include disagreements over unpaid wages, poor travel arrangements, and the cancellation of a pre-tournament camp leading up to the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The Nigerian squad even resorted to enlisting the help of the global players’ union FIFPRO over the matter.

“I know we are not prepared the way we need to be … I’ve been very frustrated with the federation and the lack of support,” he said on the Sounding Off on Soccer podcast, Daily Mail reports.

“We were supposed to have a camp for 10 to 12 days in Nigeria before going to Australia for another 10 to 15 days, but the federation canceled the home camp. “

We have fewer days than a College pre-season to prepare for the World Cup, and it blows my mind because we’ve known about this since last year.”

His grievances and complaints were expectedly greeted with disdain and disapproval from the NFF. Federation representative Ademola Olajire called for Waldrum to ‘simply concentrate on the task at hand’.

However, Samoura commended the Super Falcons for progressing at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, a first-ever for an African team at the competition.

According to Samoura, their feat brought joy to women’s football as a whole with their elegance and self-assuredness on the pitch, as well as African women’s football and the African girl-child.

“I must say that I am proud of you. As you know, I am the first woman to be Secretary General of FIFA since the organization was founded in 1904, and I am also an African. So, I am easily excited by any accomplishment that glorifies women’s football and African football,” she said.

The FIFA scribe who was in company with Nigeria’s leader of the delegation, Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu, and others, described the Super Falcons as the “best team of Africa”. She said their performance would inspire other African teams at the tournament.

“You have won one match here, as Morocco and Zambia, but you are the only team that has made it to the knock-out stage yet. I am also excited because when FIFA President.

Gianni Infantino announced my name as the new FIFA Secretary-General, I was in Nigeria working for the United Nations.

So, Nigeria is a second home for me. “You should continue to believe in yourselves and play as a team, and be ready to lift the African flag higher in this tournament.”

Osasu Obayiuwana, a British-Nigerian journalist, who posted the video on Twitter, noted that Samoura had mandated FIFA’s Director for Africa, Gelson Fernandes, to ensure that the players received the money as she would be leaving soon. Samoura is leaving after seven years as the highest-profile woman working in the world football governing body.

However, she will stay in the job through the ongoing Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and leave at the end of the year.

Obayiuwana wrote in a post on his Twitter account: “It is because of you (the @NGSuper_Falcons) that for the first time in the history of @FIFAcom, the #FIFAWWC prize money will be paid directly to you, the players.”

“@fatma_samoura, @FIFAcom Secretary-General said this to the #Nigeria players in the dressing room of… “Even though @fatma_samoura will be leaving #FIFA in a few months, I am told that @GelsonFernandes, FIFA’s director for Africa, has been given the mandate by her, to ensure that the money is received by the players. “Right now, every @NGSuper_Falcons player is entitled to $60k each.”
