TOPIC: Don't Be Disgraced "Friday 14, November 2014" *TEXT: Ezekiel 23:22-35* *Key Verse: “I will do these things unto thee, because thou hast gone a whoring after the heathen, and because thou art polluted with their idols” (Ezekiel 23:30).* God has not hidden his disdain for idolatry and whoredom. Those in doubt should consult history books on the sister-cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Before destruction came to the two cities, God sufficiently warned them. That has been His pattern in His dealings with man. Having dealt with her twin sister Aholah (Samaria), God went ahead to reveal to Prophet Ezekiel his impending judgment against Aholibah (Jerusalem). What were her sins? Aholibah was a woman of easy virtue. She was weighed in God’s balance and found wanting in the area of chastity. “Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister…” (Ezekiel 23:31). How? “Thus, she (her sister-Aholah) played her whoredoms with them, with all them that were the chosen men of Assyria and with all on whom she doted, with all their idols she defiled herself.” In sending the message, God was particularly unhappy that Aholibah consistently remained in her sinful lifestyle even after seeing the punishment meted out to her twin sister for the same reason. The Bible is replete with instances of God’s judgment against sin. The scriptures say the Almighty is a consuming fire. The Great Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, tasted God’s fury; Pharaoh of Egypt in the days of Moses, and his subjects realised very late “the finger of God” in action. Many other people - small and great - have at various times tasted the fury of God’s judgment. In all cases however, God forewarned them. In our text today, He forewarned Aholibah, but she was flagrant in her sin. Don’t be like Aholibah who consistently refused God’s warning. He cannot call indefinitely. After warning comes judgment. There is, however, an escape route. Jesus provides that route. You need not be disgraced, but you can receive pardon right now if you make up your mind. *THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “You can’t do wrong and get by.”* *Higher Everyday for Youths - Link: http://highereveryday.dclmhq.org/* ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. TOPIC: Intercessors Wanted! "Wednesday 12, November 2014" *TEXT: Ezekiel 22:23–31* *Key Verse: “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none” (Ezekiel 22:30).* It is generally believed that evil will multiply when good people refuse to speak against it. Ancient cultures thrived in the activity of individuals and groups that served as mediators between offenders and the offended persons or authorities to reconcile them. Such roles are sometimes played by lawyers, attorneys and some individuals in modern societies. The Bible also has examples of people that have stood in between two parties in conflict to reconcile them. Abraham was a good example of intercessors when he pleaded with God to spare Sodom and Gomorrah. Although his prayer did not completely avert the destruction, his effort, undoubtedly, must have contributed to the deliverance of his nephew, Lot and his family from the destruction of Sodom. In the passage for meditation today, God lamented the prevalence of ungodly activities even among people who professed to serve Him and the absence of intercessors who were genuinely concerned about the situation. His divine judgment came upon the people because nobody stood against the ungodliness; nobody prayed or showed concern about the sinful state of the people and the nation. We cannot say that the atrocities mentioned in our passage today are not present with us or rampant in our own society or churches today as they were then. God is still searching for intercessors to pray unto Him on behalf of the nation and individuals. The challenge is that we need to be concerned about the spiritual state of our loved ones, acquaintances, church members and nation. The reality of the looming judgment of God upon sinners and sinful nations should motivate us to pray. Will God count you among the number of intercessors? *THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: You can change the world through prayer.* *Higher Everyday for Youths - Link: http://highereveryday.dclmhq.org/* ****Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Wednesday, August 20, 2014 TOPIC: Absolute Dependence on God Wednesday 20, August 2014 TEXT: PSALM 119:9-16 Key verse: “With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments” (Psalm 119:10). In one textile mill, there was a notice for all workers, which boldly stated: “When your thread becomes tangled, call the foreman.” Then, one day, a young woman, who was new on the job, had her thread tangled, but she thought: “I will just straighten this out myself.” But the more she tried, the more the situation became worse. Finally, she called the foreman and said: “I did the best I could.” The foreman replied: “No you did not. To do the best, you should have called me.” The young lady relied on self-help, but the psalmist, from our text, knew it would not be enough. So, he resorted to proclamation and supplication for divine support in his bid to obey God’s word. He knew the importance of God’s word. He realised that the heart of man could lead him astray. He was mindful that the law of the land might conflict with the law of God sometimes. He was equally aware of the supremacy of God’s law over the law of the land. Therefore, he prepared himself to obey the supreme law of God. But he knew he needed divine support to do this. What a challenge to us today! To doubt our own wisdom and strength and to depend on God prove the very purpose of humility and faith in God. God says that you shall be holy for He is holy. God’s word is a treasure worth laying up, not somewhere on the book shelf while we keep to our evil ways, but in our hearts wherever we go. Let this be our plea with Him: to teach us His statutes, assist us to have the discipline of the mind to meditate upon them and give us the inner strength to apply them in our daily lives. We should not only think of God’s statutes, but we should also do them with delight. However, it is important that we depend upon our Lord Jesus Christ without Whom we can do nothing. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: A stress-free life is the out-crop of a life totally dependent upon God. |

TOPIC: Victory through Praise Tuesday 19, August 2014 TEXT: 2 CHRONICLES 20:20-30 Key verse: “And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten” (2 Chronicles 20:22). The British military leader who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, who later became the Duke of Wellington, was described as an uneasy man to serve under. Though brilliant, Wellesley was said to be demanding and would never shower compliments on his subordinates. In his old age, a young lady asked him what, if anything, he would do differently if he had his life to live over again. Wellesley, after a moment of serious thought, replied: “I would give more praise.” Our text today reveals the dramatic and miraculous victory, which came to Judah when they abandoned the conventional methods of warfare and depended upon the leading of the Spirit of God. Jehoshaphat knew that Judah could miss the best of God, like many others had done, if they did not acknowledge the power of and great possibilities through praise. Instead of complaining and grumbling or expressing fear at the intimidating forces of the enemies that came out to fight against them, they consulted the prophets of God to seek for how to fight the battle. Expectedly, some of them would have been shocked by the Spirit-led method that God gave them. “And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever” (2 Chronicles 20:21). That was how they got their victory over their enemies. Today, many Christians, instead of adopting Jehoshaphat’s method of praising God in all situations, are quick to complain, murmur, get depressed or discouraged because of some temporary challenges of life. They would, sometimes, blame others or even God for some of the mishaps they experience. How we need to earnestly realize that victory over the battles of life are easily won when we repose much confidence in God! THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Praises bring the unexpected from God. |

A discerning heart can avert this impending doom by submitting to critical self-examination and taking stock of where one has offended God. He must thereafter go to God in penitence, pleading for pardon and forgiveness, and asking for grace to make a fresh start with Him. This is the only way to avert the death sentence already pronounced on all sinful persons. But those who ignore the repercussions of their evil conducts and continue to live contrary to the word of God will draw His fierce anger and eventually, face His severe punishment. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. 1 Like |

7 Principles Of An Eagle – Dr. Myles Monroe PRINCIPLE 1 Eagles fly alone at high altitude and not with sparrows or other small birds. No other bird can got to the height of the eagle. Stay away from sparrows and ravens. Eagles fly with Eagles PRINCIPLE 2 Eagles have strong vision. They have the ability to focus on something up to five kilometers away. When an eagle sites his prey, he narrows his focus on it and set out to get it. No matter the obstacles, the eagle will not move his focus from the prey until he grabs it. Have a vision and remain focused no matter what the obstacle and you will succeed. PRINCIPLE 3 Eagles do not eat dead things. They feed only on fresh prey. Vultures eat dead animals, but eagles will not. Be careful with what you feed your eyes and ears with, especially in movies and on TV. Steer clear of outdated and old information. Always do your research well. PRINCIPLE 4 Eagles love the storm. When clouds gather, the eagles get excited. The eagle uses the storm’s wind to lift it higher. Once it finds the wind of the storm, the eagles uses the raging storm to lift him above the clouds. This gives the eagle an opportunity to glide and rest its wings. In the meantime, all the other birds hide in the leaves and branches of the trees. We can use the storms of life to rise to greater heights. Achievers relish challenges and use them profitably. PRINCIPLE 5 The Eagle tests before it trusts. When a female eagle meets a male and they want to mate, she flies down to earth with the male pursuing her and she picks a twig. She flies back into the air with the male pursuing her. Once she has reached a height high enough for her, she lets the twig fall to the ground and watches it as it falls. The male chases after the twig. The faster it falls, the faster he chases it. He has to catch it before it falls to the ground. He then brings it back to the female eagle. The female eagle grabs the twig and flies to a higher altitude and then drops the twig for the male to chase. This goes on for hours, with the height increasing until the female eagle is assured that the male eagle has mastered the art of catching the twig which shows commitment. Then and only then, will she allow him to mate with her. Whether in private life or in business, one should test commitment of people intended for partnership. PRINCIPLE 6 When ready to lay eggs, the female and male eagle identify a place very high on a cliff where no predators can reach. The male flies to earth and picks thorns and lays them on the crevice of the cliff, then flies to earth again to collect twigs which he lays in the intended nest. He flies back to earth and picks thorns laying them on top of the twigs. He flies back to earth and picks soft grass to cover the thorns. When this first layering is complete the male eagle runs back to earth and picks more thorns, lays them on the nest; runs back to get grass it on top of the thorns, then plucks his feathers to complete the nest. The thorns on the outside of the nest protect it from possible intruders. Both male and female eagles participate in raising the eagle family. She lays the eggs and protects them; he builds the nest and hunts. During the time of training the young ones to fly, the mother eagle throws the eaglets out of the nest. Because they are scared, they jump into the nest again. Next, she throws them out and then takes off the soft layers of the nest, leaving the thorns bare When the scared eaglets again jump into the nest, they are pricked by thorns. Shrieking and bleeding they jump out again this time wondering why the mother and father who love them so much are torturing them. Next, mother eagle pushes them off the cliff into the air. As they shriek in fear, father eagle flies out and catches them up on his back before they fall and brings them back to the cliff. This goes on for sometime until they start flapping their wings. They get excited at this newfound knowledge that they can fly. The preparation of the nest teaches us to prepare for changes; The preparation for the family teaches us that active participation of both partners leads to success; The being pricked by the thorns tells us that sometimes being too comfortable where we are may result into our not experiencing life, not progressing and not learning at all. The thorns of life come to teach us that we need to grow, get out of the nest and live on. We may not know it but the seemingly comfortable and safe haven may have thorns. The people who love us do not let us languish in sloth but push us hard to grow and prosper. Even in their seemingly bad actions they have good intentions for us. PRINCIPLE 7 When an Eagle grows old, his feathers become weak and cannot take him as fast as he should. When he feels weak and about to die, he retires to a place far away in the rocks. While there, he plucks out every feather on his body until he is completely bare. He stays in this hiding place until he has grown new feathers, then he can come out. We occasionally need to shed off old habits & items that burden us without adding to our lives. |

Nobody knows when he is going to die. You may say, “I don’t like to hear talks about death.” Well, when people quit dying, preachers will quit talking about death. Billy Sunday said, “if we had more preaching on hell from the pulpit, we would have less hell in the congregation”. *"THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: It is deadly to say “No” to the Spirit’s calling."* |
