Barely six months after suspension by the Olubadan Advisory Council, the Mogaji Akinsola of Opopo Labiran family compound, Ibadan, Wale Oladoja on Saturday finally lost the title. The Council directed the family compound to present another person to fill the vacant position with immediate effect. This decision was the fall-out of the emergency meeting of the Olubadan Advisory Council presided over by Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, at his Alarere residence. The meeting attracted representatives of the Association of Mogajis of Ibadanland led by its President-General, Chief Asimiyu Adepoju Ariori and the Assistant Secretary-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Suleiman Iyanda Raufu, who stood in for Chief Barr. Niyi Ajewole, the President-General of the Council. In a statement by the Personal Assistant (Media) to the Olubadan, Oladele Ogunsola, the big axe fell on Oladoja on account of his recent media outbursts considered disrespectful to the Olubadan stool and the traditional institution of Ibadanland. The media reports credited to the deposed Mogaji, according to the Council, were described as divisive, disparaging, insulting and unbecoming of a supposed leader, who is expected to be urbane and cautious in deeds and actions. The Council stressed that the conduct of Oladoja since his suspension about six months ago was not suggestive of any sense of remorse. The Council ordered the suspension of Oladoja over inhuman execution of supposed court judgment on a land matter for which he threw out some residents of Akinsola village in Akinyele Local Government area, an action described as untoward and a breach of the peace. At Saturday’s meeting, the Council recalled that the suspension placed on Oladoja then did not last long because of his perceived genuine remorse and principally, because of His Imperial Majesty’s peaceful disposition. However it said: “The recent outbursts by the same person have shown him as somebody without any iota of respect for constituted authority and any failure to bring upon him the full weight of the Council’s power would amount to condoning of indiscipline”. The Akinsola family which produced him in the first instance was asked to present another person to replace him as Mogaji of the family if they are still interested in having a substantive Mogaji. The deposed Mogaji was invited to the meeting but failed to show up on an excuse that his mother died about 24 hours to the meeting, an alibi that failed to convince the Council. Members, who spoke on his excuse described it as a gimmick to evade interrogation on the allegations against him and said they could not be swayed by such antics. |

The Independent National Electoral Commission has postponed the governorship and state assembly elections till March 18. The exercise was previously scheduled to hold on March 11, but INEC, citing a logistics crisis stemming from BVAS configuration and transportation, said the election could not hold again as scheduled following a meeting of its executives on Wednesday evening. “The elections were postponed to allow one more week for preparations,” an official familiar with the meeting told Peoples Gazette by telephone on Wednesday night. “We should be able to get everything in order before March 18.” The meeting was still underway at INEC headquarters in Abuja as of the time of filing this report. The commission had convinced the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal to vary its order granting Peter Obi of the Labour Party and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar permission to inspect the election materials on the premise that it had to reconfigure the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) for the conduction of the polls this Saturday. |
LETTER: Kogi Govt Rejects Monarch’s Response To Query Over Inappropriate Title The Kogi State Government has rejected the response of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Dr Ado Ibrahim, to the query issued to him on why he failed to welcome the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to the state when he visited in December, to unveil Governor Yahaya Bello’s projects. The letter dated January 16th, 2023 stated that the response was rejected because the monarch did not comply with the appropriate title of his stool. Part of the letter reads, “Your personal decision to use the title of Atta Ebira and not Ohinoyi of Ebiraland in your official communication is at variance with sections 19a, 27(2b), 33 and schedules II and V of Kogi State Chiefs (Appointment, Deposition and Establishment of Traditional Councils in Kogi State) Law, 2006 and your letter of appointment issued to you with Ref. No. GHLK/KGS/22 dated 2nd June, 1997. The title of Atta Ebira is alien to law and not recognized by Government. Therefore any correspondence with that title is unacceptable for official purposes.” -- Follow us for more breaking news and videos

Chief of Staff to the Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Sunkanmi Obisesan, was on Sunday reportedly attacked by some suspected hoodlums in the Ifofin area of Ilesa. Obisesan, who sustained a leg injury, it was learnt, was rushed to Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa for treatment and efforts to reach him failed, as calls to his line rang out. But the Press Secretary to the Speaker, Kunle Alabi, who confirmed the attack, said the perpetrators were hoodlums allegedly working for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party. Alabi explained that Obisesan had joined other APC members in Ifofin to receive the member representing Atakumosa East and West State Constituency at the Osun House of Assembly, Mr Babatunde Komolafe, who visited the area when the attackers swooped on them and started throwing bottles at the gathering. Similarly, the campaign office of the immediate past Commissioner for Works and Transport in the state, Mr Remi Omowaye, in llesa was also reportedly attacked in the early hours of Sunday. In the pictures obtained from the scene, the main door to the office, glass windows, billboards and APC flags were damaged during the attack. Speaking after inspecting the scene, Omowaiye said the PDP-led government was behind the incident and called on the Inspector General of Police and heads of other security agencies to arrest the situation before it gets out of control. Reacting to the allegation, Osun State PDP Caretaker Chairman, Dr Akindele Adekunle, said those behind the attacks must have been hoodlums hired by the APC for the July 16 governorship poll that the party had refused to settle after the poll.Adekunle, in a statement obtained in Osogbo, also said the PDP was not behind the attack, as the party was busy with 100 days activities of the new administration. “We are shocked by all these rumours of attacks. What we heard is that after the arrest of Asiri Eniba and Rasheed Oko Ilu during the July 16 polls, Mr Oyetola and his team abandoned their recruited gangs. “After the election, we were told nobody cared about the bad boys who were nurtured by them for four years,” he claimed. |

My brother, I was once in this situation, please never succumb to this because of love, what you can't sustain don't even start. Traditional a lady doesn't have a religion of her own she is supposed to follow you to wherever you worship in as much as you are a believer. For you to have even given her the leverage to attend her church while you attend yours is enough, leave that relationship before you regret it, speaking from experience, let he who has ears hear. Preliminary findings by the military authorities have revealed how the gunmen, who attacked the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, gained access to the institution. The PUNCH gathered that the attackers broke into five apartments at the NDA residential quarters and swiftly escaped before the guards on duty could respond. This came to the fore on Wednesday as the Christian Association of Nigeria and the Coalition of Northern Groups berated the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). Gunmen had early on Tuesday attacked the NDA, killed two officers and kidnapped another during the surprise attack. The deceased are Lieutenant Commander Wulah and Flight Lieutenant Commander Okoronkwo, while Major Datong was abducted. The gunmen injured another person, identified as Onah. But preliminary findings by the military authorities indicate that the attackers broke into five apartments at the NDA residential quarters and swiftly escaped before the guards could respond to the situation. The successful abduction and swiftness of the operation suggested that the assailants might have collaborators within the NDA, it was learnt. An assessment of the incident carried out by the authorities indicated that the sentry guards did not offer a robust and effective response to the armed invaders. It was also noted that the bush behind the officers’ quarters made it easy for the gunmen, said to be in military uniform, to escape. The report states, “An assessment of the kidnap incident revealed that the bandits gained access and escaped by breaching the barbed wire fence of the academy along Airport Road, Afaka. “Further checks revealed bushy areas around the officers’ quarters to the fence area, which is believed to have given the bandits easy concealment during escape. “More so, it was observed that the response time of troops to the crime scene was slow as the bandits successfully broke into five different flats in the same block and swiftly withdrew before the intervention of troops. “Further assessment revealed that the bandits’ escape route leads across the Airport Road to the open farm/bush area near Gidan Gado village in Afaka.” The report further noted that the bandits escaped through the Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State. It stated, “The bandits are believed to have escaped either to Buruku and Maguzawa axis or the Riwaya axis in the Igabi LGA, which are known as notorious bandits’ hideouts. “Consequently, there is a need for robust clearance operations along those areas.” It added that a joint security operation had been launched to rescue the kidnapped officer. The report also strongly recommended an overhaul of the security architecture of the NDA to avert a recurrence of the attack. Defence HQ sets up board of enquiry Also on Wednesday, the Defence Headquarters said it had set up a board of enquiry to ascertain the incidents that led to the security breach at the NDA. The DHQ disclosed this in a statement by its Director of Defence Information, Major General Benjamin Sawyerr. He stated, “Let me use this opportunity to reiterate that the NDA authorities, acting on the directive of the Chief of Defence Staff, have constituted a board of enquiry to ascertain the remote and immediate cause(s) of the breach of security with a view to sanctioning any personnel found culpable and also preventing a future occurrence. Bandits consistently rehearsed before attacking NDA, says Sawyerr In an interview with the Voice of Nigeria, Sawyerr said the gunmen had “consistently studied (the NDA) and rehearsed” before carrying out the attack. He also said the slain officers were killed for resisting being abducted by the attackers. Read Also Adesina lambasts 'ungrateful Nigerians', says 'miserable comforters' rejoice over NDA attack NDA attack very unfortunate, embarrassing -Ex defence minister Insecurity: Sit up, Sultan, Ortom, others tell FG, bandits may take over Villa, gov warns He stated, “It was an unfortunate incident. We lost two of our very brave officers. Every security architecture is susceptible to breaches; it is unfortunate that that of the NDA was breached. “I can tell you that these people had consistently studied and rehearsed what they wanted to do, because where they went to are the quarters for officers. The officers, who were killed, fought bravely against being abducted.” Armageddon is here, declares Ozekhome A constitutional lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, said he was not surprised by the development at the NDA and stated that Armageddon was here. He stated this in a chat with The PUNCH on Wednesday. Ozekhome said, “I am not surprised at all. When you point one finger at others, be sure that four are pointing at you. The words of the German cleric, Martin Niemoller, after the Jewish holocaust between 1940 and 1945 during the World War II are very apt here. “Let the Buhari government go and read them and they will understand why the chicken is coming home to roost so soon. “When bandits attack a school for the training of military men and audaciously demand ransom, then Armageddon is here.” CNG carpets FG The Coalition of 52 Northern Groups accused the Federal Government of demonstrating weakness in the fight against insecurity in the country. The coalition made the accusation following the attack on the NDA by terrorists. According to the CNG, the Nigerian polity has disintegrated to a point where basic conditions and responsibilities of a sovereign government no longer function properly. The spokesman for the CNG, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, said this in a statement titled, ‘NDA attack: Again, CNG fumes, insists Nigeria failed under Buhari’. The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), said Tuesday’s attack on the NDA would buoy the military’s determination to make decisive end to criminality in the country, rather than dampen the morale of the armed forces as intended. Buhari’s assurance was contained in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, titled, ‘Attack on NDA won’t Dampen Resolve of our Military to Bring Decisive End to Criminality, President Buhari Vows’. FG should wake up from its long sleep, says CAN The Christian Association of Nigeria expressed concern over the weakness of the government in tackling the security challenges in the country. The organisation said with the killing of 36 persons in Naraguta community in the Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State by terrorists, it was obvious that the sleepiness of Nigerian leaders “is too much and too long.” The Vice-President of CAN in the 19 Northern States and Abuja, Rev Joseph Hayab, stated this in an interview with The PUNCH. Attack could be an attempt to embarrass govt –Aide The Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to the President, Garba Shehu, said on the NDA might be a ploy to embarrass the President, Shehu said this in an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday. He stated, “Many scenarios are being painted though. Could this be truly a criminal attempt to violate the sanctity of that military institution? Was this an opportunistic crime? Is it political? Does somebody want to embarrass the government by doing this?” |
