Nigerians Should Thank President Tinubu for His Courage and Sacrifices in Transforming the Economy — Governor Alex Otti

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, saying the economic hardship Nigerians are experiencing stems from years of poor policy decisions rather than the president’s actions.

Otti made the remarks on Tuesday while receiving First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, who was in Abia to celebrate the state’s Akwete weaving heritage.

The governor asked the First Lady to convey his appreciation to President Tinubu for what he described as his bold leadership.

“I want to also plead with you to take our felicitations to His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.

“I want you to please thank him. Thank him for his courage. Thank him for the sacrifices. Some people may not understand; it takes a man with courage to do what he did in 2023: remove petroleum subsidy and follow suit with the floating of the naira.”

According to Otti, the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira have freed up more resources for the federal, state and local governments.

“What has that done? That has freed up a lot of funds that would have been used in financing consumption to doing other things in the federal government, in the states, and in the local governments,” he said.

“And today, a lot of states are not owing salaries. A lot of states are able to build infrastructure. A lot of states are able to empower people to produce rather than consume.”

While acknowledging that the reforms have caused short-term pain, Otti insisted they were necessary for long-term economic recovery.

“Now, make no mistakes about it, every courageous decision, every courageous action has its own consequences, so if you remove subsidy and if you float the naira, it will take its toll, and over time the economy will begin to correct,” he added.

“So what you see that people interpret as hardship today are a fallout of previous bad behaviour.”

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has said that if elected alongside Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election, his administration would adopt a multi-pronged approach to tackling insecurity, including engaging terr%rists and other criminals in dialogue while strengthening public confidence in security agencies.

Speaking on the country’s security challenges, Kwankwaso said the key lies in giving citizens the confidence to provide information to security operatives.

He said, “You see, all these things that are happening today, if you go to localities, those places that these insecurities are happening, I can tell you, people know almost everything. They know the locations, they know the names of all those involved, and so on and so forth.”

According to him, many residents are reluctant to volunteer information because of previous negative experiences after cooperating with security agencies.

“But what is happening now is many of the communities are even afraid to go forward and tell the security agencies or agents of what is actually happening, because many of them have done that in the past, and of course, they did not enjoy it,” he said.

Kwankwaso added that his administration would work to rebuild public trust while also seeking dialogue with those involved in criminal activities.

“So, we will give people confidence, we will work on the people, even the terr%rists and, of course, the criminals themselves, to see what can be done to discourage their action. So, we will have talks with the terr%rists, we will talk and sit down with them, we will talk to everybody.”

He maintained that security forces would still be deployed whenever necessary, saying, “And, of course, if there is any issue that will require the services of the military or other security agencies, I can tell you, we will be very happy to do it.”

Human rights lawyer and Professor Chidi Odinkalu has argued that holding Nigeria’s elections on January 16 could unintentionally disenfranchise many voters and expose deep flaws in the country’s nation-building efforts.

Speaking on The Mic On Podcast, Odinkalu said scheduling the polls for January 16 because of the Ramadan calendar ignores the travel realities of many Nigerians, particularly Igbos who traditionally return to their hometowns during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

“If you fix elections on January 16, you’re telling Igbos who go from where they live, ‘You must not come back,’ because if you do, you’re in trouble.”

According to him, many Igbo voters registered in cities such as Kano, Kaduna, Lagos and other parts of the country would still be in their hometowns after the festive season, making it unrealistic and unsafe to return solely to vote before travelling back again.

Odinkalu argued that shifting the elections to late January rather than mid-January would make a significant difference while still avoiding a clash with Ramadan, which is expected to begin around February 7 or 8 next year.

He added that the same challenge affects many Northerners living in Southern Nigeria, saying they also tend to remain in their home states until after the festive period.

The professor said the issue goes beyond election dates, describing it as a reflection of Nigeria’s unresolved questions of national identity, belonging and equal participation, stressing that electoral planning should accommodate the movement patterns of citizens rather than unintentionally excluding them.
