There is no doubt that Dr. Ikpeazu has a good mandate for Abia state, they should allow him to continue what he gas started. Congratulations to Dr.Ikpeazu. |
I think is gona be a tough one for Apga, since these 3 local governments is in Ngwa land were PDP candidate is coming from.I also head that Ngwa people are clamouring for their turn to rule Abia state, so these factors might affect the Chances of Apga in wining the pool on Saturday. |
Unn guys are so hot. |
you haven't declare us the winner |
why did we have such a low mark,is it because we are not competting with any team? |
Emzybrown: MR Omesbrit, you cannot say Ifeanyi Ubah is a thief when he has not been convicted of any subsidy scam crime. Freedom of information doesn't mean to attack and malign any individual with unverified propaganda.....don't forge that most of these electorate are uneducated, they believe mostly on what they hear, without verification and i never said he is a convict, but that is the story making waves, which they used against him during the election, due to freedom of speech. |
tunex23: My question to the UNN crew, we know that freedom of speech is a true democracy, but you also know that this can be abuse by the citizens? What your take on thatit depends on what you mean by abuse,if it is to provoke or cause chaose ,i would want you to know that human beings are different, and our level of tolerance also differs,so what could annoy you, could be accepted by another, don't forget that another man's poison is another man's food.thank you. |
jay bee: @omesbritto your second question, through the passage of freedom of information bill (foi),which gives informatiom about elected political officers, including the president,by the way, do you think that stella oduah's car scandal issue would be heard if not for freedom of speech, you and i knows that important of freedom speech can not be overemphasized in a democratic society. |
jay bee: @omesbritto first question. let take the case of just concluded election in anambra state, ifeayi ubah, labour party candidate was once involved in subsidy fraud, that made people question his credibility during the election and that affected him, this happened because their was free flow of information, which helped the electorate to choose a better candidate. |
The panel of judges, ever effective coordinators, fellow contestant and my well informed audience. Distinguish Ladies and gentlemen, is a great honour to debate on this online forum “Naira land” My username is omesbrite, representing university of Nigeria nsukka, debating against the topic “it is sometimes right for the government to restrict freedom of speech” To buttress the definition given by my first speaker, freedom of speech is also the political right to communicate one's opinions and ideas using one's body and property to anyone who is willing to receive them. It is sometimes used synonymously with freedom of expression, but includes any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used. The right to freedom of expression is recognized as a human right under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and recognized in international human rights law in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Article 19 of the ICCPR states that "everyone shall have the right to hold opinions “without interference" and everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression. In a truly democratic society, the importance of freedom of speech cannot be underestimated. It is, in fact, the very cornerstone that holds a democratic society, and makes it truly democratic. In other words, without freedom of speech, there can be no true democracy. This is because the idea of democracy itself is based upon the will of the people, if there is no free speech, then how can the will of the people be known? The truth is that, it cannot be known. Freedom of speech helps the electorate to make a better choice of whom to for, also it helps the general public to be able to make informed decisions as well as what issues to vote for. It reduces corruption by making the government transparent and accountable, is also a means by which the public makes their opinion known to the government. It gives right for fair trial during court cases by creating more access to information, expecially, when it involves political officers, because it does not encourage privacy, and it reveals corruption and deception in the government. It also create room for self-development during interactions with people, examples are online forum like nairaland, punch online news, where people exchange their views through comments after reading. Having made the above points, I am of the opinion that government should not resist freedom of speech because is of away avoiding disclosure of information regarding it’s corrupt practices and deception to the public, infact is a way of manipulating public opinion to suit them. Also, It is an infringement to human right law, which states that “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers “so any restriction alters that law and should not be allowed. If freedom of speech is restricted sometimes is no longer a democracy. A democracy would not be a democracy without freedom of speech. If it were not for freedom of speech, those things that the government was doing wrong would never be pointed out to be corrected, how then would the government be transparent and accountable, if freedom of speech is restricted? If allowed, it would do the society more harm than good. I would also like you to know that everyone has a right to speak their mind on things, no matter how controversial or how wrong it may be, they have the right to express themselves just the same, according to the constitution. The main reason government tries to restrict is to control thought of the public more easily. It is not acceptable, and should not be allowed to happen, so I don't think it is ever right for a government to restrict freedom of speech sometimes. The government should not restrict our freedom of speech sometimes, It is not only when it favours the government that it should be heard, but it is good for the people to know what it is up to and know whether is keeping it’s promises. If freedom of speech is restricted, many civil right issues would not be discussed, meaning that schools would still be segregated; people of different races would find it difficult to associate. Even interracial marriage would be illegal in many places. For that matter, child marriage, gay marriages would never have being discussed. The United States would not exist as it does today in any way. Feminism would also not have existed as it does now. Women would not have had the right to make changes that made them able to have the same jobs that men do. All these issues would never have being discussed for the fear of unknown, if freedom of speech is restricted. Lastly, I would want my well informed judges to know that, you can't deal with things you don't know about. And we can only move forward when we know where we are. So don't we want to know where we are? Or don’t we know there is a motive behind every action? The truth is hard to take sometimes. It isn't always convenient. It can be disappointing. But knowing and having information about ourselves and the world we live in is part of our identity as human beings. Our democracy relies on an informed citizenry. Thoughtful, fair, balanced, comprehensive reporting in print and in photos or video may be the best way to know what's going on, the best way to inform ourselves. Information is what keeps us free from tyranny, let us not support the government to restrict our freedom of speech from us, whether sometimes or at all times, thank you. References 1. [quote author=Elliotwiz1]I think the law on malpractice is the reason for this, It's unfair that students involved in malpractice would spend years behind bars while our corrupt leaders who commit the highest degree of atrocities live freely.
