Topic: You Shall Flourish! [Tuesday May 10, 2016]

Text: Psalm 92:1-15

Key Verse: "The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon" (Psalm 92:12).

There are over 300 species of Palm trees growing from 3 to 100 feet tall with over 3, 000 species. The date palm produces over 300 pounds of dates annually. The African oil palm, very widely cultivated in the tropics, gives a higher oil yield per hectare than any other oil plant. It produces two quite different types of oil-that from palm kernels, used for making margarine and soap, and that from the fleshy part of the fruit, used more widely for industrial processes.

This is one of the most rapidly expanding plantation crops today. Psalm ninety-two began with praise to God and ends with a testimony concerning the uprightness of God. Those who are planted by God Himself cannot be pulled down or be barren. They continue to bring forth fruit even in old age. It is very clear that we are intended by our Creator to flourish. He created us to blossom and to grow. God wants our lives to be colourful, joyful and full. Many of us think of our lives as barren. We complain that our lives are dry and deadly dull. We don't think we have a real purpose for living. Our only plan is to stay alive, pay the bills, and just get by. God promises that out of our limitations, He can bring possibilities. Out of our weaknesses, He can bring strength. Out of our timidity and our fear, He can bring confidence. It is God's intention that we flourish; but the most fundamental human problem is sin.

The challenge really is the resultant distance from our God, the guilt we carry and the shame we bear. That is indeed what makes our lives barren and fruitless. Sin is indeed the thing that destroys the richness of life and keeps us from flourishing as God intends.

Thought for the day: He grows and flourishes who dwells in Christ.

Topic: Fear God [Monday April 25, 2016]

Text: Amos 2:1-5

Key Verse: "Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have despised the law of the LORD, and have not kept his commandments. . ." (Amos 2:4).

God is immutable. From generation to generation, He remains the same. He frowns at sin and punishes sinners. Transgression of His word and commandments always attracts serious consequences. Believers are reminded that the same measure with which He visited the sinners of old, He still visits transgressors today.

In our text, Moab and Judah were thoroughly punished for their transgressions. God took a decision to punish them because they despised His Law, refuse to keep His commandments, and their lies which caused them to err. No matter a believer's position or past relationship with God, when such a believer yields to temptation and begins to transgress against the law of God, he will be visited with punishment and that, without remedy. Believers must realise that God is a consuming fire. His anger burns very hot against sinners. We are hereby, called upon to consistently fear and do God's will to avoid His awful visitation. It is this fear that restrains us from slipping into transgression.

Whatever is capable of pitching us against the Creator must be avoided. We must rededicate our lives to God and live in the light of His word. We must be firmly admonished that the Almighty is not One we can serve at our whims; we must serve Him on His own terms only, in absolute holiness and righteousness all the days of our lives.

Thought for the day: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Religion / Weekend Digest: Contentment by omigreat: 7:51am On Feb 27, 2016
’But godliness with contentment is great gain’ 1 Tim 6:6(KJV)

Contentment is simply defined as the state of being happy and satisfied. From the text above, Paul hints that to be godly and contented is of a great gain. ‘But godliness actually is a source of great gain when accompanied by contentment [that contentment which comes from a sense of inner confidence based on the sufficiency of God]. 1 Tim 6:6-(Amplified Version).

The latter part of the above verse of the Amplified version shows that contentment comes from a sense of inner confidence based on the sufficiency of God. When, as a Christian, you are not always satisfied with the little things God has given you, check yourself and be careful for Satan not to take advantage of that and lure you into things which are contrary to His will.

It was due to lack of contentment that made Ahab, despite being the King of Israel, to lust after Naboth possession which made Him and the wife arrange for Naboth’s death to take possession of his vineyard.(1 Kings 21)

It is lack of contentment that makes for instance an usher in the church to ‘steal’ from the offering that is kept in his/her care. When a man is not contented with what God has given him while trusting God for more, he may go an extra mile to do things ungodly just to achieve what he greedily aspire to get.

When you are not always satisfied with what you have, you won’t be able to appreciate God for it; and when you don’t appreciate Him for the ‘little’ He has given you , He may not give you more.

Some so called christians have tarnished Christ’s image in them due to lack of contentment. They go into doing some shady deals and they see it as nothing wrong in doing it. Some may latter get themselves in trouble which they may stand to regret for the rest of their lives.

Or how can we say of a Christian brother who goes into sneaking cocaine out of the country to another because he is not satisfied with his level and wants to ride Limousine all of a sudden.

No wonder the bible says’ It is the blessing of God that makes rich and add no sorrow to it’

(Prov 10:22)

Be satisfied with whatsoever God has blessed you with and don’t compare yourself with your friends or colleagues that have gone higher than you; while you trust God to bless you as you desire and uplift you to a higher level.

‘And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them’ Judges 8:4

Discouragement according to the dictionary is simply defined as a loss of confidence or enthusiasm.

In the bible text above, God, through Gideon chose among from the Israelites three hundred men through whom the Midianites were defeated. It got to a point that the men were wearied, exchausted and tired to the point of getting faint but still were not discouraged. They were determined to achieve God’s purpose for them in defeating the enemy of the Israelites.

Religion / Food For Thought: A Lesson To Learn! by omigreat: 2:29pm On Feb 14, 2016
She is always at the church premises by 6am wearing some faded jeans, an old T shirt and some slippers. She always comes to clean the chapel and arrange the seats. For six years she has never missed a single Sunday coming to clean the place. On this faithful day a young man walked into the chapel while she was still cleaning. He went and sat down watching as the lady cleaned. He was impressed that a lady who looked quite good even in the old cloths and a scarf over her hair could be so dedicated to her work in church. He thought within himself that this was an unfortunate lady who probably had not gotten anyone to take care of her schooling and now she would probably be an orange seller or some petty trader struggling to make ends meet. He watched and within his heart he felt he now knew what God wanted him to do. When he had felt a compulsion to come very early to church he had not understood but now he thought he did. He went back to his car and took out two 50 cedis notes and when the lady finished her work and was about to leave he called her and commended her for her service and gave her the notes. She respectfully declined the gift but he insisted pressing it into her hands. He asked if she lived close by or if he could go drop her so she would not be late. She thanked him and told him that her car was nearby, but he did not comprehend or even try to understand what she had just said. He walked her out determined to find out all he could about this lady that God wanted him to help change her level. They walked out of the chapel with him telling her where he worked and how God had asked him to come early to church that day and how he believed God is directing him to help make a big difference in her life. He was so busy talking he had not realized they had walked directly to a car parked under some trees in the parking lot. The car made his one year old Benz look like a worn out wheel barrow. The lady opened the driver’s door stepped in and handed over her card to the man and said, “I believe God sent you here for a purpose, but I do not think it was to change my level, May be it was to change yours.” I am tempted to say it took a forklift to shut the young man's mouth and move him from the place he was glued to as the lady drove off. God had a purpose for bringing him to church that morning and that purpose was to teach him humility which he learnt well because now two people always clean the chapel when everyone fails to show up. Many times we think so highly of ourselves that where God sends us to learn we go trying to teach. We may be men created in the image of God but at one time ants shall be the professors seeking to impart knowledge to us only if we are humble enough to learn. Stay blessed, be humble, trust and obey.

Religion / Weekend Digest: Abuse Of Valentine! 12 Feb 2016 by omigreat: 5:11pm On Feb 12, 2016
A message to the spinsters this ‘valentine’ season!

WHAT IS YOUR WORTH?

‘ But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.’ 1 Pet 2:9

I was doing a research on how valentine originated that is being celebrated every February 14 and I discovered that the initial purpose have been greatly abused today.
It is the day most of our unmarried (and even some married) ladies defile themselves in the name of celebrating ‘love’.
Many, like Esau (Gen25:29-34) sell their destinies cheaply on this day just because of ‘catching fun’ for few minutes that could run into a few hours. A lot are ready to get defiled just for a mere hibiscus flower which some men use to express love to the gullible, with a different motive of just getting them laid.
From our text above, the bible says you are a royal priesthood; you are God’s special possession to declare His praise at all time.
It is a pity that most Christians, especially the Christian ladies don’t know who they represent; they don’t know the value God has placed on them. No wonder the saying that ‘when the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable.
Valentine is not a time for kissing, caressing, smooching or having sex (among the unmarried) to show love. Even the married ones are to show it to their spouse, not man/woman friend or colleagues in the office or friends in school.
The way our ladies and even men value themselves will determine how they cherish their body.
Some churches are even planning along on how they will celebrate this day and encourage our youth to defile themselves all in the name of ‘Valentine’. I am not against church doing program for valentine, but the motive behind it should be right must be godly.
Believers should know what their worth is and not allow the wind of the valentine season to sweep them off from the presence of God.
May God help us!

Religion / Weekend Digest: The Heart Of Giving by omigreat: 5:45pm On Feb 05, 2016
“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

Giving in its simplest definition is the art of transferring one’s possession(s) to someone.
There are different motives behind giving out one’s possession or money to someone which I state into three categories.
1. Sacrificial Giving
2. Conditional Giving
3. Giving willingly or freely
