IslamRe: Islam, Yoruba Kingship, And The Question Of Fairness by Omoawoke(m): 12:16pm On Oct 10, 2025
Lukgaf:
From the onset, the Yoruba people, before the advent of Islam and Christianity, practiced traditional religion centered around various deities such as Sango, Ogun, Yemoja, and others. These practices are generally referred to as “Ìṣẹ̀ṣe.”

However, it is important to distinguish between Yoruba culture and Ìṣẹ̀ṣe worship. Yoruba culture is rich in values that all of us regardless of faith can and should uphold: good manners, elegant dress (like agbada), respect for elders, hospitality, and love for knowledge. These are cultural virtues, not acts of worship.

The challenge arises when the Ìṣẹ̀ṣe (traditional religious) elements are made compulsory for anyone aspiring to Yoruba kingship. Traditionally, those who want to become kings are expected to undergo certain rites that include worshiping or pledging allegiance to these deities. This practice effectively excludes Muslims and Christians, even if they are rightful heirs to the throne because it compels them to act against their faith.

This is an injustice and a clear contradiction of fairness and religious freedom. No Yoruba person is “more Yoruba” than another because of their religion. Being Yoruba is a matter of heritage, not worship.

The recent controversy following the passing of the Awujale of Ijebu, a devoted Muslim until his death shows how deep this misunderstanding runs. His burial according to Islamic rites sparked criticism from those who believe every Yoruba king must adhere to traditional rituals. But this should not be so. A Muslim king should be buried as a Muslim; likewise, a Christian as a Christian.

It is time for the government and traditional councils to revisit these outdated customs. Laws or declarations should ensure that any qualified Yoruba person: Muslim, Christian, or traditionalist can ascend the throne and live and die according to their faith.

Let us continue to celebrate our culture—our dress, food, language, and good morals but not impose Ìṣẹ̀ṣe as a religious condition. Promoting Yoruba culture should never mean forcing one form of worship upon another.

Our diversity is our strength. Let us protect it.

PS: Don't forget to recite Suratul Khaf
If you want to become a Yoruba king, then choose between your religion or accepting the traditional Yoruba way and culture

No one is forcing anyone to become king..

Live and let others live should start from when you stop invading others culture and tradition

A Yoruba king has no business with Christianity or Islam !!
IslamRe: Hijab In School: When Will We Truly Learn Tolerance? by Omoawoke(m): 11:43am On Oct 10, 2025
I think the learning of tolerance should start from you when you know you don’t have to shove your religious beliefs on others…

The school have rules and have uniform, why don’t you learn tolerance first and obey and respect the rules set by the school…
You don’t have to come in to emotionally manipulate others to accept your own conditions
EducationRe: I Went Back To My Former Secondary School To Do This (photos) by Omoawoke(m): 4:32am On Oct 10, 2025
Interesting15:
On Wednesday 8th of October, 2025, the social enterprise I founded, Talent To Prosperity Network, executed a community development outreach and seminar at Learnfast Comprehensive Academy, Ojo, Lagos, the secondary school I graduated from back in 2011.

When the students were made aware that I graduated from the school in 2011, they were so thrilled because several of them were not even born then (lol).

I utilised the outreach to educate, motivate, and encouraged the young chaps. They were not only taught to enhance their creative skills via creative reading, but were also admonished to be serious with their lives and shun dangerous vices that could hinder them from achieving greatness, so they too could come back after some years to motivate the next generation.

Some of my teachers still working in the school couldn't stop flaunting me in front of the students with words like "He's one of the most intelligent in his set", "He's a bona-fide product of this school", etc.

Before leaving, I gave out free novels.

I'm forever grateful to God for grace and empowerment.

I understand you very well and I also agree with your points, but one thing you guys fail to understand is the fact that natural gift or talent is given and not learned, and there is no way a learned talent can outshine a natural talent. And there's nothing that said Igbos must remain constant...they are evolving beyond what you think. Another thing making Igbos a strong business, and international trade force is the global network built by Igbo people's globetrotting habit of many decades. That Igbo waka waka life has made Igbos a great pillar in global trade cos you must be on ground to know certain things and to do some things in business....there is nowhere or place in the world you won't find an Igbo man mixed with the locals and some have even become locals too lolz....whereas our brothers in Nigeria brag that they don't travel anyhow cos their region is flowing with milk and honey....so you cannot eat your cake and have it...as Igbos de do waka waka, na so them de build trade and business network all over the world...you cannot beat that by sitting in your region and tweeting or designing an app...you must go there at some point...na wetin make Europe conquer and rule the world.

Besides, Igbos like myself are as innovative as you can ever imagine, don't measure Igbo businesses and entrepreneurship strides by the Igbo peasant traders you see in your area or those you see in your local markets....we have evolved beyond your understanding, that's my point.

In my business sector, as small as we are, we are leading technology innovation in that sector...we are always the first to initiate new ideas using technology. I am a trained engineer who have versed natural talent in writing and public speaking, add this to learned skills like coding, programming, digital marketing, blogging, AI (still learning) plus a natural flare for global history (war, conflicts, politics, science, technology business and economy), you can see where I am driving at?

In my small travel to one or few countries, I met fellow Igbo brothers who have taken over market sectors in some Asian countries (not China)....forget some unscrupulous Igbo boys using drug peddling to demarket Igbos, we are too entrepreneurial and innovative to a fault I must tell you. Sometimes I marvel at the never-existing ideas that run through my head.....sometimes I look back at some things I achieved in business with nothing and I just give God the glory.....you won't understand until you put body and confirm cheesy cheesy shocked

My brother, Igbo esika.....Igbo di too much when it comes to business and entrepreneurship.....if they get a country and succeed in having solid leadership in their new country, believe me, China will be shocked, the world will be shocked with their achievement in few decades of independence cool
Long epistle

It’s okay to claim and brag about anything but don’t spill out things without backing them with facts and figures, it amounts to total nonsense…

Who told you Igbos are the ones that travel the most ? What data do you have to back that up? Or you just made it up from your head?

Grandpa , better wake up and stop all this bragging stuffs…
The world has advanced beyond all this and no tribe has the monopoly of talent of trade or has the monopoly of global influence…

And the technology you speak about, last we check , the most innovative technologies and successful tech came from the people of SW….
Nairaland GeneralRe: Dark Mode, UI Facelift, & Minimum Character Rule by Omoawoke(m): 11:10am On Oct 09, 2025
Seun:
Dear Nairalanders,

We are ramping things up. Here are some things we have done recently:

1. We gave Nairaland's theme a little facelift, fixing buttons, pagination, separators, and other little things.

2. We implemented a dark mode for Nairaland with the most intuitive UX: a sun toggle on your upper right.

3. We further relaxed the minimum character rule because many people were still struggling with it.

We are also trying to make our moderation bot (aka antispam bot) more accurate. Bear with us on that.

What else do you want us to work on?

Best Regards.
Your bot bans meaninglessly most times

Just mentioning some words leads to automatic ban

Like, using a word even in a positive context leads to ban

For example , the DJ k.I.L.LEd it , it was on Fir3

So you actually took that content creator's criticism of VDM serious?

So you truly believe that Igbo businesses are stuck in the ancient middleman method?

I am Igbo, my business is even more innovative than Amazon, Tesla, etc. una no fit understand, it is God's gift.

Even Chinese de marvel at our business and entrepreneurship strides.

It is Nigeria that's holding us down, we suppose de compete with China in some industries no jokes

My bro, we Igbos are too innovative, Igbo businesses have already left th coast, we have evolved, we have sailed above the sea level, we don japa self, our network is now global, just name any country on earth, so catching up is no longer easy for others, that's the sad truth, it's all as a result of decades of resilience, dedication, vision and God's help
I believ you are an old man still stuck with ideas of the 1970s

Welcome to 2025 where nothing cannot be penetrated and unraveled
Information na water this days and once the information is accessible, you will realize that you don’t have a special head, younger people with better trading strategies will surely come up and bring an entire new change to the system that will completely outcompete you and throw you out of business if you don’t accept change.

Then you will know it has nothing to do with tribe..

And China trading wasn’t assigned to anyone or any tribe, it’s a free world. So better learn this fast, and drop this ego… it will happen in your eyes

They will set their husbands ablaze

Men fear women ooo

Some people do this subtle attacks, they deliberately look for the most unattractive picture of the person to post. I think she deserves those curses
PoliticsRe: Throwback 1910: See How The British Described The Southerners In Nigeria by Omoawoke(m): 5:05pm On Oct 08, 2025
Please let’s stop talking of how white colonial masters described us

They were evil racists, oppressors and invaders that treated our ancestors with cruelty ..

We don’t need to seek their validation …
Slave masters sometimes praise the people they see below them as a method of control and reward for obedience. A complete degradation of the people in their own land

They never liked us, they never respected us… they saw us lesser than animals

So my friend came around and I just wanted to show her around the yard and our very small veggie garden. Saw this thing on the ground, near perfect camouflage but the slittering movements gave it away.

You need to see the way my friend jumped and screamed.🤦 But all these Nairaland snake killers have been giving me morals lately😋 removed one of the boots (my dad always emphasized on wearing rubber boots when going into our garden) and smashed it with it.

Dada came running out but I had already finished the job. My kid sister tryna downplay my achievement said it's too tiny🤣 But Dada just kept on blushing and said I did a good job cux no snake is too tiny.
We burned the demon🔥🔥🫢

Last picture is me, pretty face but I am now a certified snake killer🤣 I dedicate this achievement to falseprophet1
There’s a tradition…
When you kill your first snake, you ought to hang it around your neck and dance around the market square

Do this within 7 days to chase away evil spirits
