A solar cell or photovoltaic cell is a device, which generates electricity directly from visible light by means of the photovoltaic effect. In order to generate useful power, it is necessary to connect a number of cells together to form a solar panel, also known as a photovoltaic module. There is more about the different types of solar cell here. The nominal output voltage of a solar panel is usually 12 Volts, and they may be used singly or wired together into an array. The available light determines the number and size required and the amount of energy required. 

PHOTOVOLTAICS: SOLAR ELECTRICITY AND
SOLAR CELLS IN THEORY AND PRACTICE
The word Photovoltaic is a combination of the Greek word for Light and the name of the physicist Allesandro Volta. It identifies the direct conversion of sunlight into energy by means of solar cells. The conversion process is based on the photoelectric effect discovered by Alexander Bequerel in 1839. The photoelectric effect describes the release of positive and negative charge carriers in a solid state when light strikes its surface.

HOW DOES A SOLAR CELL WORK?
Solar cells are composed of various semiconducting materials. Semiconductors are materials, which become electrically conductive when supplied with light or heat, but which operate as insulators at low temperatures.
Over 95% of all the solar cells produced worldwide are composed of the semiconductor material Silicon (Si). As the second most abundant element in earth`s crust, silicon has the advantage, of being available in sufficient quantities, and additionally processing the material does not burden the environment. 

To produce a solar cell, the semiconductor is contaminated or "doped". "Doping" is the intentional introduction of chemical elements, with which one can obtain a surplus of either positive charge carriers (p-conducting semiconductor layer) or negative charge carriers (n-conducting semiconductor layer) from the semiconductor material. If two differently contaminated semiconductor layers are combined, then a so-called p-n-junction results on the boundary of the layers

At this junction, an interior electric field is built up which leads to the separation of the charge carriers that are released by light. Through metal contacts, an electric charge can be tapped. 
If the outer circuit is closed, meaning a consumer is connected, then direct current flows. 
Silicon cells are approximately 10 cm by 10 cm large (recently also 15 cm by 15 cm). A transparent anti-reflection film protects the cell and decreases reflective loss on the cell surface



CHARACTERISTICS OF A SOLAR CELL
The usable voltage from solar cells depends on the semiconductor material. In silicon it amounts to approximately 0.5 V. Terminal voltages is only weakly dependent on light radiation, while the current intensity increases with higher luminosity. A 100 cm² silicon cell, for example, reaches a maximum current intensity of approximately 2 A when radiated by 1000 W/m².

The output (product of electricity and voltage) of a solar cell is temperature dependent. Higher cell temperatures lead to lower output, and hence to lower efficiency. The level of efficiency indicates how much of the radiated quantity of light is converted into useable electrical energy.

DIFFERENT CELL TYPESOne can distinguish three cell types according to the type of crystal: 

1.	Monocrystalline
2.	Polycrystalline and 
3.	Amorphous. 

1. To produce a Monocrystalline silicon cell, absolutely pure semi conducting material is necessary. Monocrystalline rods are extracted from melted silicon and then sawed into thin plates. This production process guarantees a relatively high level of efficiency            . 

2. The production of Polycrystalline cells is more cost-efficient. In this process, liquid silicon is poured into blocks that are subsequently sawed into plates. During solidification of the material, crystal structures of varying sizes are formed, at whose borders defects emerge. As a result of this crystal defect, the solar cell is less efficient.   
             . 
3. If a silicon film is deposited on glass or another substrate material, this is a so-called amorphous or thin layer cell. The layer thickness amounts to less than 1µm (thickness of a human hair: 50-100 µm), so the production costs are lower due to the low material costs. 

Note: However, the efficiency of amorphous cells is much lower than that of the other two cell types. Because of this, they are primarily used in low power equipment (watches, pocket calculators) or as facade elements.

From the Cell to the Module

In order to make the appropriate voltages and outputs available for different applications, single solar cells are interconnected to form larger units. Cells connected in series have a higher voltage, while those connected in parallel produce more electric current. The interconnected solar cells are usually embedded in transparent Ethyl-Vinyl-Acetate, fitted with an aluminum or stainless steel frame and covered with transparent glass on the front side. 
The typical power ratings of such solar modules are between 10 Wpeak and 100 Wpeak. The characteristic data refer to the standard test conditions of 1000 W/m² solar radiation at a cell temperature of 25° Celsius. The manufacturer's standard warranty of ten or more years is quite long and shows the high quality standards and life expectancy of today's products

NATURAL LIMITS OF EFFICIENCY

In addition to optimizing the production processes, work is also being done to increase the level of efficiency, in order to lower the costs of solar cells. However, different loss mechanisms are setting limits on these plans. Basically, the different semiconductor materials or combinations are suited only for specific spectral ranges. Therefore a specific portion of the radiant energy cannot be used, because the light quanta (photons) do not have enough energy to "activate" the charge carriers. On the other hand, a certain amount of surplus photon energy is transformed into heat rather than into electrical energy. In addition to that, there are optical losses, such as the shadowing of the cell surface through contact with the glass surface or reflection of incoming rays on the cell surface. 

Other loss mechanisms are electrical resistance losses in the semiconductor and the connecting cable. The disrupting influence of material contamination, surface effects and crystal defects, however, are also significant. 

Single loss mechanisms (photons with too little energy are not absorbed, surplus photon energy is transformed into heat) cannot be further improved because of inherent physical limits imposed by the materials themselves. This leads to a theoretical maximum level of efficiency, i.e. approximately 28% for crystal silicon.

New Directions

Surface structuring to reduce reflection loss: for example, construction of the cell surface in a pyramid structure, so that incoming light hits the surface several times. New material: for example, gallium arsenide (GaAs), cadmium telluride (CdTe) or copper indium selenide (CuInSe²).

Tandem or stacked cells: in order to be able to use a wide spectrum of radiation, different semiconductor materials, which are suited for different spectral ranges, will be arranged one on top of the other.
Concentrator cells: A higher light intensity will be focussed on the solar cells by the use of mirror and lens systems. This system tracks the sun, always using direct radiation.
MIS Inversion Layer cells: the inner electrical field are not produced by a p-n junction, but by the junction of a thin oxide layer to a semiconductor.
Grätzel cells: Electrochemical liquid cells with titanium dioxide as electrolytes and dye to improve light absorption

In this type of system the usual choice for energy storage is the lead-acid battery. The number and type of batteries is dependent on the amount of energy storage needed

[b]Mustard is a word that, for many of us, draws up an image of backyard grilling, hamburgers, and hot dogs.

The word as we know it comes from the Middle English, mustarde, which means "condiment."

It, in turn, came from the Old French, mo(u)starde, which is from the Common Romance, mosto. Mosto derives directly from the Latin mustum, from which we get our English term "must" to indicate new wine, or the unfermented juice that is being processed for wine. Originally, the condiment we know as mustard was made by mixing grape juice with mustard powder.

It is believed that mustard was first cultivated in India around 3000BC and came to Britain with the Romans. Although recipes for mustard paste appear as early as 42 AD, the use of mustard as a condiment was not widely practiced in either Greece or Rome.

When it was used, however, diners crushed mustard seed on their plate and mixed it with wine or water to suit their taste. The Romans took the seed to Gaul and, by the ninth century, French monasteries were bringing in considerable income from mustard preparations. By the13th century, mustard was one of the items offered by Parisian sauce-hawkers, who walked the streets at dinner peddling their savory wares.


Where is this mustard powder obtained? Mustard powder is made from crushing the seed of the mustard plant, native to Eurasia. The tiny seeds, perhaps 250,000 per pound, are very pungent.

On their own, they are bitter and biting. There are two main types of mustard seeds: the relatively mild white mustard seed and the extra-strong brown or oriental mustard seed. As a condiment, as we have seen, the seeds are crushed into a powder and mixed with liquids to form a paste.

Today, powdered mustard seed is likely to be mixed with wine, vinegar, beer, or water and various spices, such as tumeric. The leaves of the mustard plant can also be used for food, similar to kale, turnip greens, or spinach. It has been said that there is no part of the mustard plant that cannot be utilized.

Many kinds of prepared mustards can be found on supermarket shelves today, but they all have the same basic ingredients. They range from prepared mild yellow mustard (the hot-dog favorite) to Dijon and Bordeaux mustards which derive their distinct flavors from the French wines they are made with.

There are also hot mustards which are peppery and brown: English, Düsseldorf, German, and Bahamian. American horseradish-mustard is also particularly spicy.

Mustard seed is used in pickling, sausage making, and in boiling vegetables such as cabbage.

This is the mustard seed that yellow prepared mustard is made from. The finest Canadian mustard seeds, these are great in all kinds of meat dishes, for summer sausage, or to create your own mustard.

Mustard is one of the most widely used condiments on the planet. Prized for its oils, mustard plants grow wild in North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean, and is grown commercially in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States.

During processing, the useful oils are extracted from the mustard plant, leaving mustard seed meal, or MSM, as a byproduct. Scientists are searching for innovative uses for mustard seed meal, hoping to increase profitability for mustard producers.

Several products derived from natural sources are currently used as pest control substances for greenhouse plants.
MSM and other byproducts of the expanding biofuels industry are being studied as solutions for controlling pests while offering the potential to increase profitability of biofuel production.

The use of herbicides in container-grown ornamentals is often limited as a result of the lack of registered products for use in greenhouses and the difficulty in assuring crop safety on numerous species grown in ornamental nurseries. Can MSM offer a solution?

Dr. Rick Boydston and colleagues at the USDA recently published a report of their study of MSM's usefulness as an herbicide for container-grown ornamental plants. In the study, seed meal of mustard was applied to soil surfaces to evaluate its effect on several common weeds in container-grown ornamentals.

MSM applied to the soil surface of containers at 113, 225, and 450 g•m-2 reduced the number of annual bluegrass seedlings by 60%, 86%, and 98%, respectively, and the number of common chickweed seedlings by 61%, 74%, and 73%, respectively, at eight weeks after treatment.

"Surface-applied MSM may control weeds in container-grown ornamentals without injuring the crop", summarized Boydston. In addition, MSM provides about five percent nitrogen and contributes to the nutrient needs of the crop."

"MSM has the potential to be developed as a selective herbicide for annual weed control in ornamental containers and further research could identify additional tolerant and susceptible species of both weeds and ornamentals", Boydston noted. Cost may be a factor in the long-term use of MSM, he noted, adding, "Transportation of MSM from oil-crushing facilities to end users will be a major factor influencing the overall cost of MSM".

Mustard is a well known spice that has a long history of medicinal use in stimulating internal and external applications.  Externally, the rubefacient action of Mustard Seed causes a mild irritation to the skin, stimulating the circulation in that area, and relieving muscular and skeletal pain.  Internally, its stimulating, diaphoretic action promote sweating and can help reduce fevers and relieve symptoms of colds and flu.
 
History and Uses.     
                                                                     
Mustard Seed is widely-cultivated annual that may be found growing wild in many parts of the world.  The part of this plant used medicinally is the seed, which is collected when ripe in late summer.

The English word, Mustard, is derived from the Latin words, mustum ardens, meaning "burning must," describing the popular grape wine (mustum) that was mixed with ground mustard seeds.  In Medieval Europe, Mustard was one of the most common spices used to flavor the bland diet of the time. 

By the fourteenth century, Dijon, France, had been established as a Mustard center, supported by the Dukes of Burgundy, and today, Düsseldorf is one of the main Mustard regions of Germany.  At one time, surgeons disinfected their hands with a paste of mustard. 

The primary chemical constituents of  Mustard Seed include glucosinolates (sinigrin), sinapine, enzyme (myrosin), mucilage, protein and sulphur.  When taken internally, the seeds are laxative, mainly because of the mucilage they produce, but only small doses are advised as they may inflame the stomach. 

The stimulating, diaphoretic action can also be utilized for fevers, colds and influenza.  But this well-known herb has its primary medicinal use as a stimulating external application. 

The rubefacient action causes a mild irritation to the skin, stimulating the circulation in that area to relieve muscular and skeletal pain.  An infusion or poultice of Mustard will aid in cases of bronchitis and pleurisy, and it is often taken as a tea, or ground and sprinkled into a bath. 

There are other Mustard species that can be used interchangeably with White Mustard (Sinapsis alba), and they include Black Mustard (Brassica nigra) and Brown Mustard (Brassica juncea).

Research has shown that ginger lowers blood cholesterol by reducing cholesterol absorption in the blood and liver.

After much searching around i found the problem. There was a very small crack in the solder at RH23, this is a 2K4 surface mounted resistor located at the back of the tube base. Resoldering both sides of it cured the fault

I was hoping the nvm had become corrupt and turned the red drive down but it was fine (To enter service mode press and hold vol up and vol down on the front panel and switch set on). Thankfully ZD405 (8V2) had expired (almost s/c) and removed the red

EW fault then set went dead (tripping), R711 on EW panel burnt
Check for dry joints on C620 (0.47uF, 250V), if dry replace then check Q602 and R618 (5K6). Also it is worth replacing Q580 anytime these sets come into the workshop with a BF422

Philips TV Model: 25PT4423 (L6.2 Chassis)
Stuck in standby, LED on, no HT
There may be no 5V to the microprocessor. Check R3509 and D6501. Replace R3509 with a 47k 1 Watt version (4822 053 10473). D6501 is type BZX79B5V6 (4822 130 34173). Check the +150 volt rail, 145V is too low

No picture and sound, only a high pitch sound at switch on
Remove horizontal transistor and measure the resistance across any two pins. This value should be no less than 200ohms

Intermittent loss of syncronisation, both horizontal and vertical
The surface mounted power transistor on the teletext module requires resoldering. As there is evidence of scorching on the board the use of a more substantial component would be indicated perhaps with small heatsink

Double picture or raster shifted
Check R414 (15K)

Dead with H. output short circuit, replacment blows short again
First check power area and repair dry joints then change all high voltage (PF value) capacitors in the horizontal section, this fixed the problem

Mitsubishi TV Model: CT29B2STX
Various faults, dead, int. dead, poor frame, poor E-W
Change all electrolytic capacitors in the primary. Check all large electrolytics in the secondary (Ie bigger that 470uF), check all capacitors around IC950 (error amp.). Most capacitors you will find are leaking electrolyte. Might be a long job!!!

Sony Video Model: SLV-E800
No picture - screen is empty. Sound is ok
Check IC101 (BA7630F), if video signal comes to input (pin 1) but not present at output (pin 14) then replace this IC

Panasonic Video Model: NVHD650B
Fault code F80. works occassionally then doesnt work at all
There is a plastic piece on the motor which rotates when you press play or eject. A plastic cap fits on the spindle of the motor. This slips and doesnt grip the motor hence does not turn the drive gears. Just glue or replace the part (use loctite or super glue)

With tv off, hold volume up button on tv, switch tv on and keep holding volume up button whilst pressing standby on remote (this must be done within 4 secs of switch on) at no time let volume go, press the yellow memory button on the handset to store
