HealthWorld Health Organisation Issues New Guidance To Expand Midwifery Care Globally by omodejk12(op): 5:48pm On Jun 18, 2025
The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday released new guidance to help countries adopt and expand midwifery-led models of care.

These models position midwives as the primary providers for women and babies throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period.

In a statement, WHO said the guidance promoted strong communication and partnership between women and midwives, offering proven health benefits for both.

“Women who receive care from trusted midwives are statistically more likely to experience healthy vaginal births and report higher satisfaction with services,” the organisation stated.

Dr Anshu Banerjee, WHO’s Director for Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Ageing, described investing in midwifery models as one of the most effective global strategies for improving maternal and newborn health.

“These approaches improve outcomes, maximise resources, and can be adapted to all countries.

“Crucially, they also enhance women’s and families’ experiences of care.

“In spite of global progress, maternal and newborn deaths remain unacceptably high, especially in low-income and fragile settings,” he said.

Banerjee said WHO estimated that universal access to skilled midwives could prevent more than 60 per cent of these deaths, potentially saving 4.3 million lives annually by 2035.

“Midwifery models focus on informed choice, respectful communication, and non-invasive techniques, such as mobility during labour, breathing guidance, varied birthing positions, and emotional support.

“These methods aim to empower women and reduce unnecessary medical interventions.”

Banerjee noted that while procedures like caesarean sections are life-saving when medically necessary, their overuse can pose health risks.

“In some countries, caesarean rates now exceed 50 per cent, suggesting high rates of medically unnecessary procedures,” he said.

Ms. Ulrika Loi, WHO Midwifery Expert and lead on the new guidance, emphasised that skilled midwives helped women trust their bodies and participate actively in their care.

“Investing in midwifery not only improves health outcomes but also ensures women have access to personalised, respectful, and empowering care.

“The new guidance provides practical tools and case studies to help countries transition to midwifery-led models, calling for strong political will, strategic planning, and dedicated funding.

“It also underscores the importance of high-quality education and regulation aligned with global standards, enabling midwives to practise autonomously and evidence-based,” Loi said.

Effective implementation, according to WHO, requires collaboration among midwives, doctors, and nurses.

“In the event of complications, midwives must be empowered to work in integrated teams to ensure quality, multidisciplinary care.

“Globally, millions of women still give birth without skilled assistance, and one-third does not receive even half of WHO’s recommended eight pregnancy checkups.

“Progress in reducing maternal and newborn deaths has stagnated since 2016,” Loi said.

Anna Ugglas, Chief Executive of the International Confederation of Midwives, said midwifery-led care was not just a smart solution but a necessity.

“In an increasingly medicalised world, midwifery offers a person-centred, evidence-based approach that respects the physiological process of birth, restores dignity to maternity care, and ensures safety for mothers and newborns,” she said.

“The guidance outlines adaptable midwifery care models, including: Continuity of care: A known midwife or small team supports a woman throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

“Midwife-led birth centres: Facilities for low-risk births, often offering antenatal, postnatal, or family planning services.

“Community-based care: Mobile or local services delivering care directly to communities. Private practice: Independent midwifery services regulated and integrated into national health systems.”

PoliticsUNIPORT Confers Honorary Doctorate On Nyesom Wike (Minister of FCT) by omodejk12(op): 5:18pm On Jun 18, 2025
The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc Honoris Causa) on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike.

The Vice-Chancellor of university, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, disclosed during the presentation of the conferment letter to Wike, at his residence in Abuja on Wednesday.

Georgewill added that the official decoration and presentation of the certificate would be on July 26, as part of activities to celebrate the university’s 50th anniversary.

He explained that the Act of the university empowered it to award honorary doctorate degrees to distinguished Nigerians who have contributed immensely to the growth of the nation.

He said that the university’s Senate approved the conferment based on Wike’s track record in public service and contributions to the development of the university and Rivers.

“Today marks the beginning of the 50th anniversary celebration of the university of Port Harcourt, and there is no better place to commence the ceremony than where we are today.

“You are also a distinguished alumnus of the university, and so the university is honouring you not only for your service but also your service to the University of Port Harcourt.

“Your footprints are just there for everybody to see in the university.

“We are proud to be associated with you and the university is indeed very proud that you attended it; you have a DNA of that institution in you,’’ Georgewill said.

Mrs Gloria China, Registrar and Secretary to Council had earlier conveyed the confinement of the honorary doctorate degree on the minister in a letter dated June 10.

“It is with profound please that I write to convey to you the decision of the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt at its Extra-Ordinary meeting held on Tuesday, 3rd June, 2025 to confer on you, an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc Honoris Causa) in recognition of your visionary leadership and outstanding contributions to governance in Rivers and Nigeria.

“The conferment will be made at the 35th Convocation Ceremony of the university, which is scheduled to hold on Saturday, July 26, 2025,” she said.

Presenting the letter, the university’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa, thanked Wike for being a good ambassador of the university.

Ohuabunwa said: “The university is very proud of you because in every endeavour of your life you have made us proud.

“When you were the Chairman and Security Head of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers, you defended the university.

“When you were the minister of education, you attracted great developments to the university.

“Today the Faculty of Law is in the university because Nyesom Wike was the minister of education.”

He added that Wike did not only bring the faculty of law to the university, but he also built it.

“As if that was not enough, when you became the governor of Rivers, you made an indelible mark and built one of the best Convocation Arenas in West Africa.

“Few weeks back, when we came to congratulate you on your appointment as FCT Minister, you donated a multimedia centre for the convocation arena,” he said.

He informed the minister that the convocation arena would be inaugurated on July 25, as part of the university’s golden jubilee.

Responding, Wike thanked the university for the honour saying “for me, it is the university that gave me everything.

“I am a proud alumnus of the university where I first studied political science before studying another degree in law”.

He explained that as the then minister of education, he wondered why a conventional university did not have a faculty of law.

Wike added that he felt bad and made it a point of duty for the university to have the faculty, including the Faculty of Social Sciences, to separate it from the Faculty of Humanities.

He added that he equally built one of the best convocation arenas for the university because it deserves the best.

“If I am in a position to do more for my university, I will continue to do it.

“I am happy and I accepted the offer on behalf of my family, my wife and my friends and promised to be there to celebrate the golden jubilee of the university.

“I will continue to partner and support the university,” Wike said.

PoliticsRe: Weak NASS Enabled Tinubu’s Constitutional Breach In Rivers - Amaechi by omodejk12: 8:21am On Apr 25, 2025
The ex-minister of transportation disclosed this while condemning the suspension of Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy and lawmakers of the state assembly.

He spoke at the ninth edition of the Akinjide Adeosun Foundation’s Annual Leadership Discourse, themed “Fearless Leadership: A Panacea for Sustainable Development,” organised in Lagos.

He said, “Do you agree that there is nothing like a fearless leader and there is nothing like courageous leadership? Do you (Nigerians) need a courageous leader where the system works? Just push the button, and everything will give you the answer. It is only when there is a failed leadership that you begin to look at who is the courageous leader. There are different types of leadership traits, and fearless leadership is not one of them. There is the authoritarian leadership trait, which is one who knows it all. Such leaders tell you what to do without consulting and expect you to obey.

“You can either have a fearless followership or a docile followership. Does Nigeria resonate here as per the docility of followership? Does it resonate here? Yes. Good governance is about constitutionality and the rule of law. It is also about the concept of the separation of powers. The absence of good governance and the rule of law breeds arbitrariness in governance. Arbitrariness here has to do with the non-observance of the basic principles of law.

“For a governor or a president, who subscribes to such a concept, it is what he or she does that is law. It is not what is in the book that is the law. There is also the non-observance of the basic principles of law. This is where government is not by law, but by the whims and caprices of an individual leader, like the current pronouncement of an illegal and unconstitutional state of emergency in Rivers State, aided by weak institutions like the National Assembly, which is very weak.”

The former governor also urged Nigerians to be proactive in reacting to poor governance, saying docility was an enabler of bad leadership.

“What is even more alarming is that the breach in the situation is not even about the law. The president didn’t break any law. He broke the Constitution. Now, this breach of the Constitution is a breach of the sacredness and sanctity of the Constitution.

“The constitution of a country is the Bible of that country. And its sanctity must be protected. Can we say the same in Nigeria? Obviously, the response would be a resounding no. The president looked at the whole of Nigeria and removed an elected governor in Rivers State and appointed a military man, yet the country continued. Nothing happened.”

PoliticsRe: APC Using Money, EFCC Threats To Weaken PDP Through Defections – Bugaje by omodejk12: 8:04am On Apr 25, 2025
Former member of the House of Representatives and ex-presidential adviser Dr. Usman Bugaje has accused Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), of systematically using money to induce defections from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking in an interview with Arise News, Bugaje claimed that the APC has been aggressively targeting opposition figures, leveraging both financial incentives and potential legal threats.

His words: “Well, for what I know—and I don’t claim to know everything—the APC is basically using money to buy off PDP.

“Some say it’s a carrot and stick approach. The money is the carrot. What’s the stick? Possibly the EFCC. They might do these kinds of things. This has been the practice since the time of President Obasanjo.”

Bugaje argued that the root cause of the ongoing wave of defections is money, warning that such practices pose a grave threat to Nigeria’s democratic system.

He said: “For me, this is a very serious issue. This should be the center of our political discourse. As long as money remains the determining factor, then that’s the end of democracy and the end of politics.”

His comments come in the wake of a major political shake-up in Delta State, where Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who was also the PDP’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, defected to the APC. They were joined by members of the National Assembly, State Assembly, and several local government chairmen.

Bugaje stated that he is skeptical about the PDP’s ability to function as an effective opposition.

“There has not been real opposition since the moment Nyesom Wike did what he did,” Bugaje said.

“The PDP missed its chance to be a viable opposition party. Just look at their conduct on major national issues—from emergency rule debates to budget discussions. They failed to act like an opposition,” he added.

Federal High Court orders 54 banks to return N9.3bn stolen by hackers
Justice Deinde Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered 54 banks to immediately return a total of N9,329,322,870 fraudulently transferred by hackers from an unnamed old generation bank.

The judgment, delivered on April 15, 2025, follows an ex parte motion filed in suit number FHC/L/CS/629/2025.

The court directed the financial institutions to place a Post No Debit restriction on all accounts that received the stolen funds and to begin the immediate return of all available funds to the originating bank.

The plaintiff bank reported that on March 23, 2025, a breach in its core banking system resulted in unauthorised debits from multiple customer accounts.

The stolen funds—amounting to over N9.3bn—were then dispersed across accounts in 54 financial institutions.

Upon detection of the incident, the bank said it promptly alerted the institutions involved and began tracking the disbursements.

The investigation revealed that the funds were transferred in multiple tranches from the bank into primary accounts and subsequently rerouted to other accounts held by secondary and tertiary beneficiaries.

Justice Dipeolu ruled that the affected banks must provide details of the implicated accounts, including balances and amounts already transferred.

The judge further ordered the immediate return of all recoverable funds to the plaintiff bank.

The financial institutions are also to share comprehensive customer data related to the transactions, including names and destination accounts.

Restrictions are to be maintained on all accounts that received any portion of the funds until full recovery is made, limited to the amount each received.

The judge clarified that the ruling applies strictly to erroneously transferred funds and does not infringe on other customer deposits.

“For the avoidance of doubt and for clarity, the order is only in respect of funds erroneously transferred and sums salvaged,” the ruling emphasised.

Justice Dipeolu concluded that the stolen funds “belong to the plaintiff and not the customers of the respondent banks,” affirming the court’s authority to direct full restitution.

PoliticsRe: Scandals: President Won’t Allow Akpabio To Step Aside, Say Senators by omodejk12: 10:26am On Apr 24, 2025
Akpoti-Uduaghan had alleged that Akpabio displaced her from the chairmanship of the Local Content Committee and her usual sitting position because she turned down his advances.

A senator from one of the northern states loyal to Tinubu confided in The Guardian that the President refused to consider valid points marshalled by some of his colleagues on why the Senate President should step aside to pave the way for a dispassionate investigation into various accusations against him.

He stated: “The President was reminded of the many baggage that trailed Akpabio’s nomination at the inception of the 10th Senate, including his insults on the National Assembly during an investigate hearing into the Niger Delta Ministry and the missing N1.4 billion from Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), as well as the report of the audit panel he (Akpabio) instituted, which was sent to him as Niger Delta Minister.

“We saw the latest allegations as a confirmation of the growing discontent against the Senate President and felt that the image of the 10th National Assembly has been badly battered. But, to our dismay, the President did not want to entertain any suggestions for Akpabio to step aside, even for one day,” the APC senator stated.

A South East senator, who also pleaded anonymity, noted that though there had been, of late, small talks against Akpabio’s handling of Senate affairs, “how would our northern colleagues believe that Tinubu can sacrifice the Senate President at this time?”

But, when contacted, acolytes of the former Edo State governor said if Oshiomhole was eyeing the Senate Presidency, it must be for the next dispensation, stressing that some senators had been feeding the Senate President with the speculations to cause bad blood between the two South South senators.

An oil and gas expert, Dr. Ayodele Oni in a chat with our correspondent expressed concerns over the reluctance of IOCs to supply crude to local refineries.

He said, “The reluctance to supply Nigerian refineries such as the Dangote Refinery has allegedly been attributed to the IOCs desire to be rather paid in dollars than in Naira (due to the flunctustion in the currency’s value).

“The implication of this is that there will be scarce supply (or more expensive supply from international traders) of crude oil, which will mean a higher price of the refined products from the refinery, taking into consideration the high level of demand for the refined products.

PoliticsRe: Betta Edu, Church Leaders Ask Christians To Reflect On Virtues Of Jesus Christ by omodejk12: 7:35am On Apr 21, 2025
Dr. Edu pleaded with Nigerians to be steadfast in their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as the president works hard to pull the country from the myriad of challenges it faces.

“Just as Christ showed unconditional love and made sacrifices for humanity, let us, as patriotic Nigerians, put our country first at all times, knowing that the government of President Bola Tinubu is working hard to pull Nigeria from the economic doldrums in line with his Renewed Hope Agenda,” she stressed.

SportsNo-deposit Vs. Regular Bonuses: Which One Should You Pick For Mobile Casino Play by omodejk12(op): 12:24pm On Nov 04, 2024
If you're into mobile casinos, you've seen two main bonuses: no-deposit and regular deposit bonuses. Both sound tempting. But here's the million-dollar question: which one is better for you? Let’s break it down so you can decide what works best for your style of play.

No-Deposit Bonuses: Play Without Paying First up - the no-deposit bonus. It’s the one that grabs everyone’s attention because, well, you don’t have to pay to play. The casino hands you free credits just for signing up. Seems too good to be true? Not entirely.

Pros of No-Deposit Mobile Casinos:
Free to try: It’s all in the name. You’re getting a taste of the action without reaching for your wallet. Perfect for testing out a new casino, especially on mobile, where speed and convenience are everything.

Low risk, High reward: You can try slot or table games without any financial commitment. And if luck’s on your side, you could even turn a no-deposit bonus into real winnings. But here’s the catch - these bonuses usually come with strict terms.

Available anywhere: With no-deposit bonuses, players can claim casino offers wherever they are. You don't need a full setup, just your phone and an internet connection.

Cons of No-Deposit Bonuses:
Wagering requirements: Yes, the fine print. These bonuses usually come with sky-high wagering requirements. You’ll have to play through your winnings several times before withdrawing anything. Casinos aren’t giving away free cash for nothing.

Low winning limit: Even if you manage to win, many casinos cap how much you can take home from a no-deposit bonus. That potential jackpot may shrink faster than you think.

Regular Deposit Bonuses: You Get What You Give
Now, let’s talk about the regular deposit bonus. These are your classic "we'll match your deposit" deals. Typically, casinos offer to match a percentage of your deposit up to a certain amount. That sounds pretty sweet, right?

Pros of Regular Deposit Bonuses:
More: These bonuses can boost your bankroll fast. Deposit N10,000, and the casino might give you an extra N10,000 (or more) to play with. This gives you more chances to enjoy popular slot games or hit the tables.
Higher winning potential: With a larger bonus comes the potential for bigger wins. While no-deposit bonuses are capped, deposit bonuses can become substantial payouts, especially if you get on a hot streak.

Flexible use: Most regular bonuses can be used across a wider range of games - slot games, roulette, poker - you name it. You’re not limited to just a small selection.

Cons of Regular Bonuses:
You've got to spend to win: The main downside is obvious - you have to put your own money in. This can be a leap of faith for new players or those hesitant to commit.
Wagering requirements apply: Wagering requirements are in place, just like with no-deposit bonuses. It might take a while before you can cash out your winnings.

So, Which One Should You Choose?
It all boils down to your personal preference and what you’re comfortable with. Are you dipping your toes into mobile casinos, looking to test the waters without risk? A no-deposit bonus is your best bet. You get to try games for free, get a feel for the app, and maybe win something.
On the other hand, if you’re in it for the long haul and ready to commit, a regular deposit bonus offers more bang for your buck. With bigger bonuses and higher payout potential, deposit bonuses are ideal for players who plan on sticking around.

Your Call: Take the Risk or Play It Safe?
In the end, you’re the one making the call. No-deposit bonuses are great for those who love a risk-free gamble. But a regular bonus might be worth the initial investment if you're serious about maximising your potential winnings. It all depends on your comfort zone and what you hope to get from the experience.
