When the concept of a national carrier, tagged ‘Nigeria Air’ was first ‘unveiled’ in July 2018, by the country’s aviation ministry, many Nigerians that questioned the finer details of the project, were called all sort of names on social and traditional media space. They were branded enemies of the Buhari administration. However, recent confirmation from the same aviation ministry, headed by Hadi Sirika, shows that the project has been suspended till further notice. Back in July, the federal government announced that the national carrier will take off, without telling Nigerians who the stakeholders were or how the carrier will be run or who the partners were. To add to the injury, a ridiculous amount of money ($600,000) was paid to a company in Bahrain, to design a logo for the carrier, when it could easily have been done in Nigeria at a lower cost. Now, the project which was not much of a project, to begin with, has come crashing like a house of cards, with some stakeholders still saying the suspension of the project will give the federal government more time to plan. The valid question here, is, why did the federal government refuse to plan properly before ‘unveiling’ the project as legitimate? Nigeria has a long history of looking good on paper without much commitment to implementation and maintenance. This needs to change before the country can be on a path to prosperity or even be taken seriously by other countries in and out of its continent. This adoption of piss poor planning is not limited to Nigeria’s aviation sector, other sectors like oil and gas, power, agriculture are also affected, but will the Nigerian masses fight against this prevalent problem through electing worthy public officials to serve them? http://lingoafrica.com/nigeria-air-more-time-to-plan-or-a-scam/ |
