Sports / Barcelona President Confirms La Liga Exit A Possibility Over Catalan Independenc by omusiliyu(m): 10:15am On Oct 03, 2017
Josep Maria Bartomeu has acknowledged the possibility of leaving the league should the region gain independence from Spain

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu says the club would have to discuss the possibility of leaving La Liga if Catalonia gained independence from Spain.

A Catalan independence referendum, which has been deemed illegal, was marred by violence on Sunday, with Barca forced to play a 3-0 win over Las Palmas behind closed doors at the Camp Nou.

Bartomeu said Barca's future in La Liga would need to be discussed if Catalonia ever gained independence."This situation does not exist so far," he said on Monday.

"But with regards to things that can happen in the future, it is something that the board of directors would discuss. It would be something to analyse calmly."

If we discuss the subject intensely then obviously we will find the best solution. But if this [independence] happens, the board of directors will see."Catalonia's sport minister, Gerard Figueras, has suggested that Barca could play in the Premier League if the region secedes from Spain, citing Swansea City as an example of a club from a different country playing in England's top-flight.“In the case of independence, Catalan teams in La Liga – Barcelona, Espanyol and Girona – will have to decide where they want to play: in the Spanish league or a neighbouring country like Italy, France or the Premier League,” said Figueras.

“Now in Spain there teams from other countries who play in national leagues: clubs from Andorra in football and basketball.

“Monaco play in France, in England Welsh clubs. I don't think that Uefa has anything against seeing another club play in a different league from their country.”

Barcelona are 24-time La Liga champions, trailing only rivals Real Madrid (33).

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) last night released a new timetable for the recall of embattled senator Kogi west senatorial district, Dino Melaye.

The time table, signed by Augusta Ogakwu, secretary to the Commission, disclosed that conduct verification for the recall of Sen Dino Melaye, would hold on Oct 14, 2017.

Ogakwu further disclosed that the verification would take place in all polling units in Kogi West, while INEC notification for the exercise would be released on Oct 3.

The statement further revealed that the Commission had fixed Oct 5 as the last day for the submission of applications by observers, and Oct 9 for the publication of the list of accredited observers for the exercise.

INEC would hold its stakeholders’ meeting at the Senatorial District headquarters and Local Government headquarters on Oct 10.

The last day for the submission of names of polling agents for the verification by the member sought to be recalled and the representatives of the petitioners had also been scheduled for Oct 12.

The commission said that it had provided Melaye with relevant materials to study.“In fixing the timetable for the verification, sufficient time has been provided for the senator to study the petition and accompanying materials to effectively prepare for the verification inaccordance with the order of the Federal High Court, Abuja.”

The court had on Aug 11 ordered the commission to continue with the suspended recall process.

Nigerians have been warned to stop making mockery of the Supreme Leader of North Korea Kim Jong-un “lest they pay a heavy price”.

A news service from the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK), took to its twitter handle @DPRK_News to issue the warning. The twitter handle does not bear the verification icon of twitter as an officially verified handle. It said:

Impudent peoples of Nigeria are warned against mockery of Supreme Leader Kim Jong-Un, lest they pay a heavy price.— DPRK News Service (@DPRK_News)

North Korea and its leader had been top on the news for its nuclear programme with the most recent being its successful test of a Hydrogen Bomb which many World leaders have condemned. However, no reference was given to the alleged mockery of the North Korean Leader by Nigerians.

Education / DELSU Sacks 10 Lecturers, 8 Junior Staff Over Extortion, Sexual Harassment by omusiliyu(m): 6:48pm On Sep 02, 2017
In what looks like a boost to the Federal Government’s anti-corruption crusade, the Governing Council of the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has sacked 10 lecturers, eight non-teaching junior staff and warned 17 dons for extortion, sexual harassment and gross misconduct, among others.

This was made known on Friday on the website of the university, http://www.delsu.edu.ng/Dismissed-Staff., signed by the university Registrar and Secretary to the University’s Senate, Mr. Daniel Urhibo.

Most of the 17 teaching staff, who were reprimanded for Plagiarism, according to the statistics, were Readers in their various departments. Others were from the ranks of Assistant Lecturers to Senior Lecturers.

The decisions, the statement said, were taken based on recommendations made by the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee (SSDC) to the university’s Governing Council after the institution’s 101st regular meeting held on Friday, 18th August, 2017 at the university premises.

Urhibo, in the statement, said the workers were allegedly thoroughly investigated by the SSDC and appropriately sanctioned based on the gravity of the crimes committed.

Three senior officers from the Bursary Department were also among workers dismissed from the service of the institution.

For instance, the Chief Accountant of the institution, Mr. Henry Etaverho Onovwiemore, was shown the way out for allegedly absconding from his duty post since 29th October, 2012.

Also, Mr. S.T. Orugboh, an Accountant II from the Bursary department, got his dismissal for also allegedly absconding from his duty post since October, 2012.

Not left out is the Provost of the Oleh Campus of DELSU, Prof. B.O. Okaba who is also of the Department of Political Science. He would no longer hold any position in the university for a duration of 5 years, beginning from November 2015.

Another professor from the Department of Agric Economics and Extension, who’s also Dean, Post Graduate School, Mrs. O.D. Ogisi, was removed from her position and given a strong warning.

The statement included several other workers found guilty of one infractions or the other with appropriate sanctions following.

About seven married women were among the 54 workers investigated as contained in the circular. However, two were discharged and acquitted.

For most of those whose appointments were terminated or who were dismissed from service, it took effect from November 15, 2017.

When contacted on phone, public relations officer of the institution, Mr Eddy Agbure, said he had been transferred from his position to the Senate, adding that he would send the number of the new image maker which he couldn’t do before filing the report.

Sports / PSG To Face UEFA FFP Investigation Following Neymar And Mbappe Transfers by omusiliyu(m): 7:08pm On Sep 01, 2017
PSG rocked the football world with their mega-money moves for Neymar and Kylian Mbappe and UEFA will investigate them under FFP guidelines.

UEFA has opened a formal investigation into Paris Saint-Germain as part of its monitoring of clubs under Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, European football's governing body has announced.

It follows a world record €222 million transfer of Neymar from Barcelona and a reported €180m deal for Kylian Mbappe, star striker for Ligue 1 rivals Monaco, following his season-long loan deal this season.

Reports in Spain had suggested that both Barcelona and Real Madrid - whom were long considered the front runners to sign Mbappe - had complained to UEFA about PSG's conduct this summer.

Following the closure of the transfer window in France on Thursday and confirmation of Mbappe's switch to Parc des Princes, it took less than 24 hours for UEFA to announce it would be launching an investigation into the French club.

"The Investigatory Chamber of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body has opened a formal investigation into Paris Saint-Germain as part ofits ongoing monitoring of clubs under Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations'" UEFA stated on Friday in a press release."

The investigation will focus on the compliance ofthe club with the break-even requirement, particularly in light of its recent transfer activity.

"In the coming months, the Investigatory Chamber of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body will regularly meet in order to carefully evaluate all documentation pertaining to this case."

UEFA considers Financial Fair Play to be a crucial governance mechanism which aims to ensure the financial sustainability of European club football.

"UEFA will make no further comments on this matter while the investigation is ongoing."

While Mbappe and Neymar arrived, Serge Aurier and Blaise Matuidi were among the departures, but eyebrows were raised across Europe at whether PSG were following FFP rules with their unprecedented player expenditure. While the investigation gets under way behind closed doors at UEFA, PSG will compete in the 2017-18 Champions League group stage against Bayern Munich, Anderlecht and Celtic.

Foreign Affairs / U.S. Orders Closure Of Russian Consulate In San Francisco by omusiliyu(m): 12:43am On Sep 01, 2017
The U.S. has ordered Russia to close its consulate in San Francisco, the U.S. State Department said on Thursday.

The order was in response to the Kremlin’s decision to shrink the U.S. diplomatic mission in Russia.

The U.S. also required Russia to close its two annex buildings in Washington, D.C. and New York City.

In July, Moscow had ordered the U.S. to cut its diplomatic and technical staff in Russia by more than half to 455 people after Congress overwhelmingly approved new sanctions against Russia. “We believe this action was unwarranted and detrimental to the overall relationship between our countries.

“In the spirit of parity invoked by the Russians, we are requiring the Russian government to close its Consulate General in San Francisco, a chancery annex in Washington, D.C., and a consular annex in New York City.“

These closures will need to be accomplished by Sept. 2,” State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement on Thursday.

However, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed regret during a phone call with his U.S. counterpart Rex Tillerson about Washington’s move to close down Moscow’s San Francisco consulate and the other annexes.

“Moscow will closely study the new measures announced by the Americans, after which our reaction will be conveyed,” Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

Fellow Compatriots,

I felicitate with you all, particularly the Muslim faithful, on the celebration of this year’s Eid-El-Kabir.

I congratulate our Muslim brothers and sisters who are currently in Saudi Arabia to participate in the rites of the Hajj.

From the outset, I want to use this opportunity to thank all Nigerians who prayed for my recovery and have continued to extend their goodwill and support after my return to the country.

Indeed your fervent and sincere prayers, which cut across religion, political and ethnic divides, has energised me to re-dedicate myself and this administration to the task of building a great Nigeria.

On the joyous occasion of this year’s Eid-El-Kabir celebration, I appeal to all Nigerians to rise against the odds, keep our prejudices aside and strengthen the bonds of friendship and unity to keep our country together.

For Muslims all over the world, this celebration is to commemorate the trials and triumph of Prophet (Abraham) Ibrahim.

As we celebrate, I sincerely believe that our nation can make rapid progress on all fronts if we re-enact the exemplary virtues, typified by Prophet (Abraham) Ibrahim, through his sacrifice, patience, steadfastness, generosity and obedience to Allah’s command and constituted authority.

We must learn to see ourselves as brothers and sisters from the same heritage, who must come to terms with the African proverb that ‘‘a family tie is like a tree, it can bend but it cannot break.’’Once again, I assure you that this administration, which has made the security, economic well-being and prosperity of all Nigerians its priority, will not rest on its oars untilwe see the Nigeria of our dream.

I wish everyone happy Sallah celebrations.

MUHAMMADU BUHARI

Politics / Almajiris Are Scholars Not Beggars — VC by omusiliyu(m): 12:31pm On Aug 31, 2017
Prof. Abdalla Adamu, the Vice-Chancellor of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has said that Almajiris are not illiterates contrary to widely held view.

Adamu expressed this viewpoint while answering questions from newsmen at the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the 11th Edition of Literature in Northern Nigeria Conference on Monday in Abuja.

The theme of the 4-day conference being hosted by NOUN in collaboration with Kwara State University is “Literature and Contemporary Developments in Northern Nigeria.

Adamu said that one of the aims of the conference was to bring to the fore the fact that Northern Nigeria produced a huge mass of literature in indigenous languages.

According to Adamu, Northern Nigeria literature is about writing in local languages but majority of Nigerians think of literature only in English Language.

“Literacy goes beyond ability to read and write English; literacy is the ability to read and write inany language.“Examples of people who are literate and who aretaken for illiterates are the Almajiris. They are not just beggars; they are scholars; they have been sent from place to place to learn.

“Almajiris means somebody who moves from one place to another searching for knowledge. “They learn in Arabic and can read and write in Arabic; they can read and write Hausa language using Arabic scripts; they do not go western conventional schools, so they do not write ABCD,’’ he said.

The vice-chancellor said that Northern Nigeria scholars had been writing novels in indigenous languages as far back of as 1932 under British colonial tutelage.

Adamu said that another essence of the conference which had been going on for 11 years was to draw attention to thriving Northern Nigeria literature.

He regretted that most often, Northern Nigeria was judged in terms of performance in examination.

In his keynote address, Prof. emeritus, Graham Furniss, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, said that Hausa Language studies overseas had been in the decline in the US and Uk.

He said that the model currently established was built around strong and growing departments and research centres in Nigeria which were able to establish collaborative arrangements with centres abroad.

Furniss said that the collaborative model would be important for the future in order to maintain Hausa studies beyond West Africa.

“While research and publication in Hausa is now firmly anchored in Nigeria and Niger, with original studies being produced by new generations of MA and PhD students as established scholars, there is an emerging task that goes beyond the building of Hausa studies in Hausa.

“There is an international intellectual discourse about world literature, global trends in literary and cultural production that examines, for example, writing cultures in Indian sub-continent, in East Asia, in the Middle East.

“While there is an increasing amount of materials translated into Hausa, there is very little material translated out of Hausa, whether into English, French, or indeed into Yoruba, Igbo or nay other language,’’ he said.He said there was need to develop a body of the best writing translated out of Hausa.

The professor emeritus said that such body would make Hausa cultural production accessible on the international and national stage in a way that would help both to increase the interest in and knowledge of Hausa to oriental and international audience.

In his remark, the Emir of Suleja, Malam Muhammad Ibrahim, said that technology and social media had impacted negatively on students.

Ibrahim said that students spent a lot of time on browsing the social media to the detriment of meaningful studies and intellectualism.
