Blinken, United States Secretary of State, has described the security challenges facing Nigeria as extraordinary.

Blinken made this known during a virtual roundtable with Kenyan and Nigerian journalists.

Blinken, who was responding to a question on how the United States could assist Nigeria to tackle the security challenges posed by Boko Haram, bandits, and IPOB.

He said, “It is fair to say that the challenges that Nigeria faces when it comes to security are quite extraordinary and you referenced them whether it’s terrorism, whether it’s banditry and criminality, whether it’s piracy. All of these are real challenges.

“One, we are in total solidarity between us in trying to address these challenges together. And the United States is committed to supporting Nigeria as it meets these challenges. And what that involves primarily is helping Nigeria continue to build its capacity through training, through resources, through information sharing, through equipment, and all of that done, very importantly, with full respect for human rights.

“But it’s also important that we work together, as we are, to address some of the drivers or facilitators of violence and instability that we know those engaged in these activities can sometimes feed on. And that’s why you have to have a comprehensive approach to these challenges. It’s not the security piece that is vitally important, but it’s insufficient, and so economic development, progress, the opportunity is hugely important.”

Blinken further advised countries battling security challenges to deal with the root causes of insecurity in their region.

KZN police confirmed 31 prisoners are on the run after a prison truck transporting them to court was hijacked by heavily armed gunmen in Pietermaritzburg, KZN, South Africa on Wednesday morning, April 28.

According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Jay Naicker, at around 8am on Wednesday morning, two police officers were transporting prisoners from the PMB New Prison to the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court when they were blocked off by a double cab bakkie with 5 “heavily armed” gunmen.

The RTC South Africa Community Group shared this replace earlier on Wednesday.

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is scheduled to be sentenced on June 16 after his conviction for the murder of George Floyd, a Minnesota court said on Friday, April 23.

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted this week of murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd during an arrest last year, will be sentenced on June 16, the Minnesota Judicial Branch said on Friday.

Chauvin faces a combined 75 years in prison for the charges of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter after being found guilty on Tuesday. Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill will sentence Chauvin.

Chauvin, who was fired by the Minneapolis Police Department three days after the incident, was arrested and charged on May 29.

An order sealing jurors’ names was also filed Friday evening. Jurors’ identities will remain under seal for at least six months, though the court has informed them that they are free to identify themselves if they wish and speak to whomever they like about the case.

So far, none of the jurors have spoken publicly, though one alternate juror spoke to Minneapolis.

Three other former police officers involved in Floyd’s arrest are to go on trial later this year.

BOULDER, Colo. —  The suspect in the Colorado supermarket shooting appeared in court for the first time Thursday, and a defense attorney immediately asked that he receive a mental health evaluation before the case against him proceeds.

The 21-year-old gunman accused of killing 10 people at a Boulder supermarket this week made his first court appearance on Thursday, where a defense lawyer said she needed more time to look into his psychiatric condition.

Kathryn Herold, one of the public defenders representing the suspected gunman, Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, told Colorado District Judge Thomas Mulvahill that she needed the additional time to review evidence that could shed light on his mental-health issues.

“We cannot begin to assess the nature and depth of Mr. Alissa’s mental illness until we have the discovery from the government,” she said, without going into further details on his condition.

Mr. Alissa, who faces 10 counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder in Monday’s mass shooting, is accused of opening fire on a King Soopers grocery store using an AR-style pistol. The victims in the shooting ranged from ages 20 to 65 and included a Boulder police officer.

Prosecutors on Thursday morning formally filed charges against Mr. Alissa in the case. The attempted murder charge relates to Mr. Alissa firing at Boulder police officer Richard Steidell who was responding to the shooting, prosecutors alleged in court filings.

The court appearance marked the first time that the suspect has appeared in public since he was arrested inside the King Soopers supermarket in Boulder on Monday and treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound in one of his legs.

He was last seen handcuffed and being led out of the supermarket by police. He had removed all clothing except his shorts before being taken into custody. A rifle, a green tactical vest and a handgun were recovered inside the grocery store, according to an arrest affidavit.

After the hearing, Dougherty told reporters outside the courthouse that he was "confident that in the state of Colorado, particularly here in Boulder County, that we can find 12 people who will be fair and who will be open-minded and reach the right verdict when the time comes."

New York lawmakers have finally agreed to legalize marijuana in New York.




State Sen. Liz Krueger said lawmakers were finalizing a bill that would create a new state regulator for cannabis products and decriminalize the possession of up to three ounces of marijuana. New Yorkers will be allowed to cultivate marijuana for personal use and the state will study a new system for determining whether drivers are inebriated because of marijuana use, she said.

The bill is set to be taken up next week by the state Assembly and Senate, lawmakers said. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, has proposed legalizing marijuana in the state budget that is due by next week. He put marijuana legalization into his budget proposals in 2019 and 2020, but it was taken out after disagreements with Democrats who dominate the state Assembly and Senate.

The agreement would represent a breakthrough for lawmakers who have been trying to legalize marijuana for several years but often became bogged down over how to allocate the projected $350 million in annual tax revenue from sales.

Fifteen other states have legalized recreational marijuana. Last month, Virginia lawmakers approved similar legislation, though it has a lag before becoming effective.

Lawmakers would create a new Office of Cannabis Management, led by a five-member board. It would be contained within the State Liquor Authority and authorized to issue different licenses for cultivation, processing and distributing marijuana, as well as for dispensaries and "social consumption sites."

The South Korean joint chiefs of staff confirmed the launch, but did not release more information about the type of missile used.

North Korea's ballistic missiles are banned under the United Nations Security Council Resolutions.

South Korea's joint chiefs of staff said the US and South Korean militaries were analysing the launches, which they said were fired at around 7.06am and 7.25am, local time, from South Hamgyong Province.

The launches could pose a challenge to US President Joe Biden, whose administration has yet to meaningfully engage with the nation.

The United States military's Pacific Command said they are monitoring the situation and consulting with allies.

The launches came a day after American and South Korean officials said the North had fired short-range weapons, presumed to be cruise missiles, into its western sea over the weekend.

South Korea's defence ministry said the North's short-range tests on Sunday were its first missile firings since April 2020.

Mr Biden played down those launches, telling reporters, "There's no new wrinkle in what they did."

South Korea's presidential office said it will hold an emergency National Security Council meeting to discuss the launches.

Nuclear negotiations between the United States and North Korea have been stalled since the collapse of Kim Jong Un's second summit with former President Donald Trump in February 2019.

Then, US officials rejected North Korean demands for major sanctions relief, in exchange for a partial surrender of their nuclear capabilities.

A 21-year-old Colorado man was charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder Tuesday after authorities said he walked into a King Soopers grocery store on a quiet Monday afternoon and gunned down 10 people, including police officer Eric Talley, a father of seven who responded to the rampage.

In a news conference Tuesday, authorities identified the suspect as Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa of Arvada, Colo., who was shot in the leg during the attack and later filmed being taken into custody. He was charged with 10 counts of murder in the first degree and one count of attempted first-degree murder.

The mass shooting — the second in the country in less than a week — has reignited the debate on gun violence, even as investigators struggle to identify a motive for this latest, horrific event.

Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold told reporters at a news conference Tuesday morning that authorities were doing “everything in our power to make sure this suspect has a thorough trial and we do a thorough investigation.”

The probe is ongoing, she said, asking anyone who knows anything about the tragedy to come forward.

Borowski and a group of customers and employees ran toward the back of the store in a line, placing their hands on top of one another’s backs so they wouldn’t leave anyone behind, he said. “Don’t stop! Keep going!” he recounted telling people.

The group exited through the loading dock in the back of the store, he said, then hid under a semi-truck for a moment before running up a hill to the parking lot of a nearby Whole Foods.

He played the drums, carried a Bible and attended meetings of a Christian student club. Outside of school, he hunted deer, played video games and traveled with his church youth group.

In an Instagram bio that the social media company has since removed, he summed himself up as “Pizza, guns, drums, music, family, and God. It’s a pretty good life.”

But over the past four years, Long’s life turned toward the tumultuous. He started college classes and left after one year. He believed he was straying from his faith, telling friends that he was fixated on sex to the extent that he thought he was addicted. The Twitter user said she was couldn't believe the sad news because her late friend was very boisterous and was very happy the day before she died as she kept on posting about the Grammys.

She killed herself.

This is the most vibrant person I've ever known. What happened? Almost no one could answer the question at the time and most of us just seemed to assume it was depression and she was just masking it with a smile. I have known her for a long time and even with personal issues, it never got so bad that she'd actually take her own life. I found it too hard to believe.

So I did some digging to the best of my abilities. I discovered it wasn't entirely depression. It was family issues and ultimately emotional abuse that pushed her off the edge. I was able to get some chats before the family seized her phone. Chats between her and her mother. Apparently, her and her grandma accused her of taking a large amount of money which she had nothing to do with.She pleaded with them of her innocence and it seemed it had been happening for a while but no one believed her. I will attach the chats below. She was reaching her breaking point due to the constant emotional abuse from her family. They threatened to arrest her for a crime she didn't commit.
