The female warder who was caught having sex with a male inmate in an office in a prison in South Africa, has been suspended. 

This is coming after National correctional services spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo disclosed that a disciplinary process has been launched over the incident which occurred at Ncome Correctional Centre. 

Graphic video clips of the encounter have raised questions about how the cellphone the prisoner used to film the sex escapade found its way into the prison.

The national correctional services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo told radio 702 on Wednesday March 17, that more prison officials might be punished if found culpable.

Nxumalo said; 

“We have suspended the official involved and we’ve taken disciplinary measures against the inmate. 

“The investigation is much broader than the two people seen on the video because ... We need to understand if it is just an isolated incident or if there is more to it and if there are other players."

The probe will look into how the pair managed to walk to and gain access to the office, and the origin of the cellphone which is regarded as contraband in prison. 

He added; 

“We do not want them [cellphones] in our centres. This is a classic case, a cellphone was used to record this.

"Cellphones are just one item in the long list of contraband items that are not allowed because they cause harm to the victims outside and used to plan other crimes. They could even order hits on others.

“It’s completely unpalatable. I don’t think that the nation would deserve to see something like that, captured in video, and you are correct, both of them [were] fully aware they are recording this thing.

“Sexual activities between inmates and correctional officials are shameful incidents that can never be ascribed to what is expected of our officials. The official involved has been identified and she will be subjected to a disciplinary process with immediate effect. 

“Correctional officials are expected to abide by a code of conduct, and despicable acts of sexual activities with inmates shall never be tolerated. We appeal to those in possession of the video to refrain from disseminating it."

Nxumalo told TimesLIVE on Wednesday that claims shared on social media about the warden taking her own life were not true.

A Twitter post claiming the two were married was false, according to Nxumalo.''That is not true. There is no relationship there.''

Tanzanian President John Magufuli died Wednesday aged 61 from a heart condition, his vice president said, after more than five years of divisive, authoritarian rule capped by his refusal to take Covid-19 seriously.

Magufuli had not been seen in public for more than two weeks, and rumours had been circulating about his health.

"It is with deep regret that I inform you that today on the 17th of March, 2021 at 6:00 pm we lost our brave leader, the President of the Republic of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli," said vice-president Samia Suluhu Hassan.

She said Magufuli had died of a "heart condition" known as chronic atrial fibrillation characterised by an abnormal heartbeat, which he had suffered from for a decade, at a hospital in Dar es Salaam.

According to Tanzania's constitution, Ms Hassan will be sworn in as the new president within 24 hours and should serve the remainder of Magufuli's five-year term which he began last year.

Magufuli was last seen in public on 27 February, but Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa insisted last week that the president was "healthy and working hard".

He blamed the rumours of the president's ill-health on "hateful" Tanzanians living abroad.

He was Tanzania's first president to die while in office.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crime Complaint Center has released its annual  list of countries which are worst affected by internet crimes. 

The State-specific statistics which can be found within the 2020 Internet Crime Report and in the accompanying 2020 State Reports, includes information from 791,790 complaints of suspected internet crime, an increase of more than 300,000 complaints from 2019. The reported losses also exceeded $4.2 billion.

According to the report, Nigeria is ranked 16th worst affected country.

Christians and Muslims clashed in Ilorin, Kwara state capital today March 17 after the state government reopened 10 Christian schools which were initially shut down over a hijab controversy.

It was learnt that students wearing hijab were disallowed from entering Baptist School, Surulere by some protesting Christians.

The situation grew worse as angry Christian and Muslim faithful threw various objects including stones and plastic chairs at themselves.

The security operatives close to the school had to call for reinforcement to calm the situation. The operatives dispersed them with tear gas.

During their protest, the Christians displayed placards with various inscriptions such as ‘No Hijab in Baptist Schools and all mission/grant-aided schools’, ‘Otoge, give us back our schools, among others.

Correspondent gathered that both Muslim and Christian organisations had mobilised their members to monitor activities at the reopened schools on Wednesday.

It was also learnt that there was a protest at C&S College, Sabo Oke, Ilorin.

The protesters reportedly dressed in white garments and caps and peevented Muslim pupils from entering the school with their hijab.

The government shut the 10 schools on February 19, 2021, following a crisis on the wearing of Hijab by Muslim female students who are attending the schools.

THE Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has denied a news report that it agreed to call off the ongoing strike after meeting with the Government negotiation team led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige on Friday, November 27.

The Federal Government at the meeting at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Labour and Employment reportedly increased its offer for Earned Allowances (EA) to university based unions and funding for the revitalization of public universities from N65 billion to N70 billion.

Reports last night claimed the union would call off the strike after the Federal government pledged to pay N40 billion for Earned Allowances and N30 billion for the revitalization of the university system bringing the total payment to N70 billion. It was further reported that the Government agreed to settle the salary arrears of the aggrieved lecturers before December 31. 

The report also noted that ASUU was expected to report the agreement to its organs and then communicate their decision to the government after which a date for the calling off of the strike would be announced.

ASUU insisted that the agreement to call off the strike should not be announced until it has been approved by its members.

But ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, has denied knowledge of any agreement to call off the strike, stressing that at the meeting, it was only agreed that union should convey Government message to their organs and get back to Government.

” I am not aware of that. All I know is that we had a meeting and we are going to report to our members. But I don’t know about suspension of strike.” Ogunyemi said

Minister of Employment, Chris Ngige, told newsmen after the meeting that he is positive that all issues relating to the strike will be resolved in its next meeting with ASUU.

 “Many issues were discussed at the meeting including salary shortfall, the payment system and revitalization of the university system. I am positive that all the issues would be resolved at our next meeting.” Ngige said

Oba Adegoke Adeusi, the Olufon of Ifon under Ose Local Government Area Ondo State, has been murdered by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers.

The monarch, first class traditional ruler was returning to his palace from Akure, the state capital, when he was killed.

A security source told our correspondent that Oba Adeusi was earlier kidnapped before he was killed.

Oba Adewusi was said to have been hit by bullets and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where he was confirmed dead.

A new report, the Global Terrorism Index, has ranked Nigeria the third terrorism most impacted country in the world.

According to the report, which was released on Wednesday, the number of deaths attributed to Boko Haram in the country increased by 25 per cent from 2018 to 2019.

This year’s report ranked Nigeria for the sixth consecutive time since 2015 as the third country with the worst impact from terrorism, globally.

Afghanistan is top on the list, followed by Iraq. 

Syria, Somalia and Yemen are ranked fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

GTI said despite the rise in the number of casualties from Boko Haram attacks in the North-East, Nigeria was the second to record a fall in violent deaths after Afghanistan in 2019.

The report indicates that Nigeria remains the most terrorised country in Africa with huge economic and financial loss. 

Excerpts from the report reads, “Nigeria had the second largest fall in total deaths, owing largely to a 72 per cent reduction in fatalities attributed to Fulani extremists.

“Despite this decrease, the number of deaths attributed to Boko Haram increased by 25 per cent from 2018 to 2019. Renewed activity by Boko Haram in Nigeria and neighbouring countries, including Cameroon, Chad and Niger, remains a substantial threat to the region.

“In 2019, Boko Haram carried out 11 suicide bombings causing 68 fatalities. Suicide bombings accounted for six per cent of all terror-related incidents by Boko Haram in 2019, marking an 89 per cent decline from their peak in 2017. Boko Haram was responsible for Nigeria’s deadliest terrorist attack in 2019 when assailants attacked a funeral in Badu, Borno State.

Akinwumi Adesina, the president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has reacted to the claim by a British lawmaker, Tom Tugendhat, that Yakubu Gowon looted half of Nigeria's central bank when he was overthrown in 1975.

Tugendhat, a member of the British parliament, made the allegation on Monday, November 23, when British lawmakers debated a petition calling for sanctions against Nigeran government officials allegedly involved in human rights abuses amid the #EndSARS protests.

Former Nigeria’s head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, has reacted to the allegation against him by a British lawmaker of stolen have of CBN when he left Nigeria and moved to United Kingdom in 1975.

However, Adesina who is Nigeria's former minister of agriculture described the allegation as misinformation in a tweet he posted on Thursday, November 26.

The football legend passed away on Wednesday from a heart attack.

A suspected thief was beaten to death and set ablaze by a mob in Idjerhe community, Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State on Tuesday morning, November 24.

It was gathered that the suspect, who was part of a two-man gang accosted a lady with a toy gun and snatched her mobile phone and undisclosed sum of money.

When the victim discovered that it was a toy gun, she raised the alarm and the suspected robbers fled.

The alarm attracted the attention of the a mob in the area, who pursued the suspects. They caught one of them, beat him to death before setting his body ablaze.

Spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the incident.

A 100-level Theatre Art student of the University of Osun, UNIOSUN, Ikire campus, was found dead and it is alleged he committed suicide.

Juba Babatunde Phillips was found dead in his hostel room by a friend on Tuesday, November 24, 2020.

He had shared two posts on his WhatsApp status. One was about the hardships he has survived, the other was him wondering why people commit suicide.

“He had posted a cryptic message on his WhatsApp Status about suicide which prompted his friend to rush to the hostel to check on him only to find him dead and next to him was a bottle allegedly containing a poisonous substance.

Juba was pronounced dead on the arrival of medical personnel and his body has been deposited at the morgue,” a source said.

Chisom Chukwuneke, a 17-year-old student who had seven A1 in the 2019 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, is dead.

Chisom Chukwuneke, made straights A’s in the entrance exam and emerged the best student from her school, Graceland college in Enugu last year. She went on to win numerous academic awards in her school.

The teenager, who was the best graduating student in her school, won many awards after achieving the feat.

Sadly, her life has been cut-short despite having many dreams she wished to achieve.

Chisom was reportedly sick and was already making a recovery before she died.

United Kingdom parliament has on Monday November 23, debated a petition seeking to impose sanctions on Nigerian Government officials involved in the shooting of peaceful #EndSARS protesters at Lekki tollgate on October 20.

The debate stemmed from a petition started by Silas Ojo which garnered more than 220,000 signatories, crossing the 100,000 mark needed for a petition to be debated by the lawmakers.

One of the highlights of the debate was moment a member of the parliament urged his government to place sanctions on Nigerians who flee to UKwith ill-gotten wealth.

He also spoke about Nigeria’s former military ruler, Yakubu Gowon’s alleged looting of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Yakubu Gowon known as Jack who served as the head of state of Nigeria from 1966 to 1975. He ruled during the deadly Nigerian Civil War, which resulted in the death of 3 million people, most of which were civilians.

He took power after the 1966 Nigerian counter-coup and was overthrown in the 1975 coup d’état.

The lawmaker said;

What we are seeing in Nigeria today is part of that story. It is a tragedy we are all witnessing because we see things falling apart.

The problem this time is not foreign pressure known as colonialism. The pressure instead is corruption and violence and attempts at control (of power).

We need to call out the corruption, we need to use the powers that we have in this country to stop those who are profiting from the wealth of that great nation and hiding it here.

He added;

Now some people will remember when general Gowon left Nigeria, he took half of the Central Bank, so it is said, and moved to London.

We know today, even now in this great city of ours, there are sadly some people who have taken the wealth of Nigerian people and hidden their ill-gotten gains here.

We know that our banks sadly have been used for that profit or that illegal transfer of asset and that means that the UK is in a unique position in being able to actually do something to really exert pressure on those who have robbed Nigerians.

Rapper 21 Savage wrote a heart-breaking tribute to his British brother who was stabbed to death on a south London estate. 

Terrell Davis - a 27-year-old drill rapper known as TM1way - was killed on the Blenheim Gardens estate in Brixton last night.He had been taking some shopping to his grandmother when he got into an argument with an old friend, who suddenly lunged forward and stabbed him, a family source said.

Mr Davis and 21 Savage - who was born in Plaistow, east London before emigrating to the US as a child - have the same father, Kevin Emmons. 

The Grammy-award winning artist wrote on Instagram: 'Can't believe somebody took you baby bro. I know I took my anger out on you I wish I could take that s*** back.'

He also posted a picture of him and his brother as young boys - as well as a series of more-recent images of Mr Davis.

Atlanta-based rapper 21 Savage, 28 - whose name is She'yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph but who also goes by the surname Emmons - was arrested by US immigration officers last year due to his visa expiring in 2006.

He was brought to America by his mother when he was a seven-year-old child.

The 28-year-old artist was released from custody after paying a $100,000 bond.

'Terrell was a good guy, he used to live on the estate but had moved away.

'But he was round visiting his grandmother yesterday and had gone to the shops for her as she's elderly and we are in the middle of a pandemic.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has served an update on its meeting with the representatives of the federal government today November 20. 

ASUU disclosed that the federal government has agreed to its demand of paying their members’ salary arrears from February to June through the old salary payment platform, Government Integrated Financial and Management Information System.

ASUU also revealed that the FG has offered N15billion in addition to the N20billion pledged earlier, said they will now consult with its council and then get back to the government in a short while, to make their final intention known; if the strike will be suspended or not.

Announcing the decision reached at the meeting via its tweeter handle, ASUU tweeed:

The Kano State Police Command has recovered the decomposed body of 8-year-old girl killed and buried in a shallow grave by suspected kidnapper after collecting N500, 000 ransom from her family.

Recall that the 24-year old suspect, Habibu Sale kidnapped Asiya Tasiu in Chikawa village, Gabasawa Local Government Area of the state on June 6, 2020, when she was sent on an errand in her Aunty’s place who happened to be the suspect's neighbour.

The  Spokesperson of the command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who confirmed the incident while briefing newsmen at the command’s headquarters in Bompai Kano on Tuesday, November 17, said the suspect led a medical team as well as detectives to the scene where he buried the victim.

A 39-year-old man, Musiliu Owolabi, has been sentenced to death by hanging for killing his lover, Afusat Idowu.

Owolabi, an automobile mechanic, was dragged before the Abeokuta High court for killing his deceased girlfriend in February 2018.

 The Chief Judge of Ogun State, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, while delivering her judgment, submitted that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubts that Owolabi was guilty of the offence charged, hence, convicted him.

Dipeolu, said the offence committed contravened the provisions of section 319 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun 2006.

She held that the evidence presented by the prosecution was tenable and therefore, sentenced Owolabi to death by hanging.

Earlier, the state prosecution counsel, Mr James Mafe, Director of legal Drafting, Planning Research and Statistics, said the convict committed the offence on Feb.1, 2018, at Camp area in Abeokuta.

Grnor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has vowed to investigate and punish those behind the imposition of bread tax in the northcentral state, describing the development as evil. 

“The particular incident of bread tax is being looked into as I speak, we are investigating those that are behind this,” the governor, 45, said while briefing the press after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday.

“It is evil and it is unaccepted, to say the least. I have ordered the Head of Service to issue queries to those that are responsible and they will face the law accordingly.”

The Nigerian Embassy in Germany has suspended a senior security staff who allegedly solicited sex from a woman before renewing her passport in a viral video.

In the video, the official identified as “Mr Martin” was caught with his pants off in a hotel room after he had allegedly asked the unnamed lady to have sex with him before he could release the passport.

A few hours after the video surfaced online on Tuesday, the embassy announced the suspension of the official who works as local staff in the security unit “with immediate effect.”
