On Tuesday night October 27, Black Entertainment Television (BET) marked the 15th annual BET Hip Hop Awards. During the ceremony, countless artists performed including Lil Baby, City Girls, Burna Boy and Chris Martin, and more. Beyond the performances and cyphers, very few actual awards were presented during the broadcast. Juventus striker, Cristiano Ronaldo has been ruled out of Wednesday's Champions League match against Barcelona after testing positive for coronavirus. Portuguese TVI reported that Ronaldo "has once against tested positive for COVID-19" following a swab carried out by Juventus. The 35-year-old is now awaiting the result of a UEFA test which, if also positive, would rule him out of the Group G game in Turin. The Nigeria army said this after series of denials, the Nigerian Army has finally admitted its soldiers were involved in the assault on protesters in Lekki, Lagos State on the 20th of October 2020. A statement signed by the Acting Deputy Director of the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major Osoba Olaniyi says their involvement was as a result of the violence which led to several police stations being burnt , policemen killed and suspects in police custody released with weapons carted away. “The situation was fast degenerating into anarchy. It was at this point that LASG requested for the military to intervene in order to restore normalcy.” He, however, insisted that the army did not open fire on the protesters despite initial admittance by the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, who claimed troops were at Lekki to “ensure compliance with the curfew imposed by legitimate civil authorities in Lagos and other states”. Olaniyi, who branded as untrue and unfounded the shooting of protesters at Lekki, also claimed that the news of the shooting was aimed at discrediting the Nigerian Army He said, “At no time did soldiers of the Nigerian Army open fire on any civilian. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has threatened to sue the National Broadcasting Station (NBC) in the next 48 hours if the N9m fines imposed on Africa Independent Television (AIT), Arise Television, and Channels Television are not rescinded. Earlier today the NBC Sanctions AriseTV, Channels and AIT, for their coverage of #EndSARS protests. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has given the National Broadcasting Commission 48 hours to cancel the fines imposed on three TV channels. The NBC acting Director General Prof Armstrong Idachaba who announced the sanction at a press conference in Abuja on Monday said the three stations grossly breached the Nigeria Broadcasting Code in their coverage of the EndSARS crisis by relying on unverified social media reports. “Channels Television, Arise TV and AIT especially continued to transmit footages obtained from unverified and unauthenticated social media sources. No doubt these pictures stimulated anger and heightened the violence that was witnessed during the crisis,” Prof Idachaba said. Governor Ben Yade of Cross River state has ordered security agencies in the state to embark on a house to house search to recover all items looted from public and private business places in the state. The Governor said in a press release signed by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity Christian Ita, that security agents should take legitimate action to halt violence and recover the stolen items. Over the weekend, hoodlums and looters broke into over 35 government and private properties, looted several items and set some buildings ablaze. The National Examinations Council, NECO, announced Sunday, that it has suspended its ongoing internal Senior Secondary Schools Certificate Examinations, SSCE, indefinitely. The council, in a statement by its Head, Information and Public Relations Division, Azeez Sani explained that the action was taken by its governing board, following the current turn of events in the country. It particularly attributed the action to the closure of schools and the curfew imposed by some state governors to safeguard lives following developments around the country. The Plateau State Government has denied claims that it hoarded COVID-19 palliatives, saying that the distribution process was about to begin but had to be put on hold due to #EndSARS protests. Recall that residents of Buruku area in Jos South Local Government Area on Saturday morning broke into warehouses where COVID-19 palliatives were stored and carted away food items after accusing the government of hoarding them. PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari on Monday said that it was the right of the youths to protest and make certain demands from their leaders. The President also said that the young generation should be allowed to exercise their fundamental rights, but advised that they should not allow their genuine concerns to be hijacked by hoodlums. The Federal Government has agreed to release N30 billion as part payment of the Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Sen. Chris Ngige. Minister of Labour and Employment said this at the end of a meeting between the Federal Government and ASUU on Friday in Abuja. “The Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) was committed to release N30 billion on or before Nov. 6. The communiqué issued this saying, the release of N20 billion funds for revitalisation of public universities will be payable by the end of January 2021. On the issue of Earned Academic Allowances(EAA), which had accumulated to N40 billion since November, 2019, the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) made a commitment to release N30 billion on or before November 6, 2020. “The remaining N10 billion would be spread equally over the two tranches to be paid in May 2021 and February 2022 respectively.
