10 Frequently Asked
Questions About Bed
Bugs in the
Healthcare
Environment In September 2016, Dr. Ron Harrison, entomologist and Orkin technical services director, presented a webinar called “Battling Bed Bugs: The Latest on Bed Bug Monitoring, Detection and Treatment,” in partnership with Health Forum. The webinar provided the latest information about bed bugs, including: An understanding of the challenges bed bugs pose both to the general public and specifically within the healthcare environment Need-to-know facts about bed bug biology An overview of current and future monitoring and detection techniques, as well as treatment options Read on for the 10 frequently asked questions about bed bugs in the healthcare environment. And if you missed the webinar, you can still access it and view Dr. Harrison’s presentation . 1. Where are bed bugs commonly found? How do they get into healthcare environments? Bed bugs are most commonly found in patient rooms on the patient beds or furniture. Rarely, they have been seen on patients themselves. These pests like to hide in soft furniture, mattresses, box springs, in cracks in the baseboards and behind headboards. Bed bugs are known to hitchhike into healthcare facilities on the personal belongings of visitors, patients and employees. 2. What is the best way to treat a bed bug infestation in a healthcare environment, and how long is the treatment effective? Every healthcare environment is different, and treatment for a bed bug infestation can take certain forms depending on the level of the infestation and your facility’s needs. With that said, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to treating a bed bug infestation. Work with your pest management provider to determine the best plan, which may include heat or conventional chemical options. The duration of the treatments depends on the products used, so be sure to consult with your pest management team about this. 3. What are the steps to take to clean the room and soft goods before and after treatment? Before the treatment takes place, your pest management provider may request that you complete a few preparation steps ahead of the services you selected. This may include moving the headboard or furniture, removing bed linens and more. After the treatment, you’ll need to restore the room’s furniture and items back to their original placement. 4. How long should I wait to use a room after it has been treated? This will be based on the treatment and services agreed upon with your pest management provider. It could be a matter of waiting for several hours or for several days, so it’s important that you consult with your provider on the appropriate time period. 5. How do you prevent bed bug activity from spreading if you have to move patients? When treating one room, should you treat an adjoining room? Bed bugs usually hide on belongings and not people, so take extra caution in transporting your patients’ belongings such as purses or suitcases from one room to another. In most cases, you aren’t as likely to transfer bed bugs on your facility’s wheelchairs or gurneys, but be sure to thoroughly inspect them regardless.Bed bugs do have an inclination to migrate. If there’s an infestation, which means all stages of the bed bug life cycle are present, we recommend that you work with your pest management provider to ensure an inspection take place in the rooms that share a common wall or are in the same hallway. 6. Can hospitals and environmental services teams treat for bed bugs without the help of a pest management provider, especially if they use store- bought products like sprays and monitors? According to the National Pest Management Association’s 2015 Bed Bugs Without Borders survey, 68% of individuals say bed bugs continue to be the most difficult pest to control without the help of a professional. We highly recommend partnering with your current pest management professional – or hiring a new provider who understands the science behind bed bugs – to help manage the situation, rather than using DIY or store-bought methods that are not as effective. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to treating bed bugs, and it’s important to set a customized plan developed by your pest management provider in motion. Almost every time, products that are purchased for use in a facility need to be applied by a licensed or certified pest management provider, according to local laws. 7. What are heat treatments, and how do they work? Will handheld steamers work if applied to soft goods? Heat treatments involve raising the ambient temperature of a room or the interior of a heat chamber to a specific temperature to treat for bed bugs. Results differ by temperature – for example, bed bugs will not survive at specific high temperatures if exposed for 1 second, and at lower temperatures, they won’t survive if exposed for a longer time. The key is that if you’re treating a room, every area – even crevices and areas underneath furniture – must be heated to the temperature set for the treatment. Talk with your provider to ensure the treatment is executed and temperatures are monitored appropriately. 8. Does isopropyl alcohol kill bed bugs, young and old? Do UV lights affect bed bugs in any way? While isopropyl alcohol can affect bed bugs theoretically, it is not an effective treatment method. Spraying isopropyl alcohol on beds or other areas where bed bugs were spotted can actually pose a fire risk. There are products that professionals use that are alcohol-based, but they should never be applied by anyone who isn’t a licensed or certified pest management provider. For UV lights, there is no practical way for the UV light to reach all surfaces or areas where bed bugs are hiding. It could work in theory, but again, not practically. 9. How do you handle situations involving patients who have a bed bug issue at home and continue bringing them to the hospital? These are sensitive situations that you should handle on a case-by-case basis, but you should take as many precautions as you can. As a first step, place the patient’s personal belongings in a heat chamber designated to treat for bed bugs (if available) under the direction of a pest control professional, and then inspect the area where they were waiting or being seen both before and after their visit. You may also consider proactive bed bug treatment plans and setting aside a few rooms where you know you’ll take extra time to inspect and treat the room after their appointment. 10. How can employees protect themselves against bed bug activity in the healthcare environment they work, whether in a facility or at a patient’s home? Recommendations for how employees can protect themselves will vary based on the environment. In a healthcare facility, it’s important to know that the operating room, maternity ward and psychiatric ward are more likely have bed bugs since patients are staying overnight. In these areas, your employees should inspect for bed bug activity. If they do spot a bed bug, they should be cautious when arriving home at the end of the day, placing their clothes in the dryer at the highest setting as soon as they enter their home to kill any bed bugs that may have been on their personal clothing. For employees who are servicing these areas exclusively, they should have a change of clothing and shoes on hand at the hospital to avoid wearing any affected clothing when they arrive at home. For your employees who work in patients’ homes, they should do a cursory inspection upon arrival, and take increased precautions to be an island unto themselves – we encourage them to keep their bags, any kits and chairs, etc. that they are bringing with them separate from the patients’ items. They shouldn’t lean up against things and should try to be conscious of not bringing anything home. Always try to remove clothes and place them in dryer at the highest setting right away to make sure bed bugs are killed. Curious to know even more? And reliable fumigation services. MANAGE TREES AND PLANTS
Trim back any tree branches or shrubbery that
touch your home to eliminate pest “bridges” to
the house. Mulch, such as wood chips and pine
straw, provide ideal harborage for pests. Instead
of using these in areas that touch your
foundation, place less pest-attractive ground
cover, such as rock or stone. REPAIR DOORS AND WINDOWS Because pests can wiggle through tiny cracks and gaps, inspect and repair any ill-fitting, warped or broken doors and windows; check for and repair rips or tears in screens. A screen mesh size of at least 200 holes per square inch is generally available at home stores and is ideal for screening out pests. CRACKS AND GAPS Inspect the entire exterior of your home for other cracks, crevices and gaps through which pests could enter. Check for cracks in the foundation, loose siding, missing roof shingles, and gaps around incoming utility lines, including pipes, electric and cable wiring. Seal any openings with copper mesh, coarse steel wool, sheet metal or mortar. Expanding caulk is less applicable as many pests can chew through it. TRASH AND LITTER Keep yards, patios, decks and garages free of litter, weeds and standing water. Ensure trash cans have tight-fitting lids, and clean the cans and area regularly to remove debris and spills, on which pests can feed. LIGHTS To reduce flying insects around doors and windows, replace standard mercury vapor lights with high pressure sodium vapor or halogen lights. Bulbs that have pink, yellow or orange tints will be least attractive to the flying insects. Although it is common to place lights on exterior walls near doors, it is better to place the light farther away, using pole lights when possible, with the light shining toward the door for safety. Eliminating conditions in your home that appeal to pests will help reduce the attraction that brings them in. INTERIOR GAPS Some cracks and gaps will be visible only from inside your home. Check in, under and behind kitchen cabinets, refrigerators and stoves, as well as between the floor and wall juncture and around pipes, floor and dryer vents. Seal any gaps found, especially those of 1/4 inch or greater. DRAINS Sink and floor drains often accumulate gunk and debris which can attract pests and provide an ideal breeding site, especially for small flies. Inspect and maintain all sink, tub, basement and laundry room floor drains. FOR GENERAL FUMIGATION AND PEST CONTROL SERVICES. If you’ve discovered bites on your skin, or
found those pesky little things
crawling around on your bed or
nearby, take action right away!
Don’t live with this stressful
problem, and don’t spend thousands
replacing your mattress or paying
an exterminator to perform a
treatment that you can do yourself
for less. Here’s how you can get rid
of bed bugs in just 4 easy steps:
STOP THE BITING
The first goal in a bed bug
treatment is to stop bed bugs
from biting you while you
sleep. If bed bugs can’t feed,
they can’t breed. If they can’t
breed, then they can’t
reproduce, and the infestation
won’t be able to grow any
further. This means that as
soon as you remove their food
source (your blood), you set a
timer for the infestation to
starve off.
KILL BED BUGS IN YOUR BED
To begin, strip your bed of all
sheets, pillowcases, and other
bedding, and seal them in
plastic garbage bags to keep
bed bugs from escaping and
infesting other parts of your
home. Take the bags straight
to the washing machine, and
wash them using the hot water
setting. Then, dry the bedding
on high heat if their tags allow
it. This heat treatment will kill
any bed bugs or eggs hiding in
your bedding.
While your laundry cycle is
running, use a vacuum cleaner
to remove any bed bugs, shells,
fecal droppings, or eggs that
might be along the seams of
your mattress, pillows, box
spring, and along the cracks
and crevices in the bed frame,
headboard, and footboard.
Follow up the vacuuming with
a high pressure steamer to
penetrate deep inside
mattresses, box springs, bed
frames, headboards, and
footboards to kill bed bugs and
eggs on contact.
While the mattress and box
spring are left to dry, spray
down the joints of the bed
frame, headboard, and
footboard with a contact spray
and residual spray . The
contact spray will kill bed bugs
quickly and then evaporate,
while the residual spray will kill
bed bugs over several weeks.
Remember to follow the
sprays’ product labels and
MSDS for safe and effective
usage.
Once the mattress and box
spring are dry, encase them in
sealed bed bug encasements .
Encasements are crucial, as
they prevent bed bugs from
entering or escaping the
mattress and box spring,
cutting off key hiding places.
Remember to leave the
encasements on for at least 18
months to ensure that any bed
bugs already inside have
starved to death. Once the
encasements have been
applied, you can put your
mattress and box springs back
on your treated bed frame, and
put your laundered bedding
back on your bed.
MAKE YOUR BED BITE PROOF
Now that you’ve killed the bed
bugs hiding in your bed, it’s
time to put up defensive
measures to keep them out.
Remember, bed bugs can be
hiding in all sorts of cracks
and crevices throughout your
bedroom – in furniture, along
baseboards, and inside of the
walls – so you need a way to
keep them out of your freshly
treated bed. By cutting off the
infestation’s food supply (you),
you halt their breeding and
reproductive cycle, making the
treatment a whole lot easier.
Move your bed away from any
other points of contact, like
walls, nightstands, and other
furniture. Tuck in or remove
any hanging skirts or sheets,
and remove any storage under
the bed that is touching any
part of the frame. The only
thing your bed should be
touching is the floor via its
legs. If you don’t have a bed
frame with legs, you should
purchase one to sleep in, at
least until you are bed bug
free.
To complete the isolation,
place ClimbUp Interceptors
under each leg of the bed.
These interceptors will prevent
bed bugs from climbing up
your bed legs, stopping them
from reaching you in your bed.
As bed bugs attempt to get to
you, they will climb up the
edge of the interceptor and fall
into the perimeter pitfall where
they can’t escape.
With the bed now fully isolated
and elevated, bed bugs hiding
elsewhere in the room won’t
be able to feed on you or hide
in your bed. You can also use
the ClimbUps to monitor the
changing population of bed
bugs in your home. Hopefully,
you will see less and less bugs
appear in the traps as you go
through the next steps. Now
that you have created a safe
haven in your bed, you can
move on to treating the rest of
the room.
BED BUG HUNT
STEAM AND CLEAN YOUR ROOM
Bed bugs could be hiding in all
sorts of tight spaces in your
room, like wood cracks, inside
books and furniture, and along
the baseboards and the edges
of the carpet. In this step,
we’re going to clean, vacuum,
and steam those areas that
bed bugs are likely to be. This
will cut down on the bed bug
population while making it
harder for survivors to hide.
Begin by reducing clutter in the
room; things like clothes,
books, and other personal
belongings shouldn’t be left on
the floor, as they make
treatment more difficult and
add hiding places for bed bugs
and eggs. Seal those items in
garbage bags and store them
away from the room. Any
clothing that was picked up or
removed from dresser drawers
should be dried on high heat
for at least 45 minutes. Once
treated, clothing that you don’t
normally wear should be stored
inside garbage bags outside of
the infested room.
Next, vacuum and steam along
baseboards, window sills, and
the edge of the carpet. When
you’re done vacuuming, the
bag or canister should be
cleaned or discarded to limit
exposure of bed bugs to other
parts of the home. The
steamer can also be used to
treat sofas, chairs, furniture,
and cabinets. When applying
steam, remember to move the
nozzle slowly (about one inch
per second) to ensure that all
bed bugs and eggs are killed.
If you suspect that bed bugs
might be hiding in items that
can’t be laundered or steamed,
like books, papers, luggage,
shoes, and dry-clean only
clothing, you can treat those
with a portable bed bug heater.
Heaters are a popular way to
safely heat-treat items during
bed bug treatments, or as a
preventative tool for travelers
who want to ensure that bed
bugs can’t escape from their
luggage to infest their home.
SPRAY AND POWDER CRACKS AND CREVICES
It’s time to finish off any bed
bugs you may have missed,
and to set up a long-lasting
defense for any eggs that
hatch in the coming weeks.
Use a combination of both
contact and residual sprays, as
well as a residual powder, to
ensure that you cut down the
population now and continue
killing bed bugs over time.
First up are the contact sprays,
like STERI-FAB and JT Eaton
Kills Bed Bugs . These will kill
quickly, but evaporate shortly
after, leaving no long-lasting
protection. Spray along
baseboards, below drawers
and on drawer slides, behind
cabinets, and behind night
stands. Follow up with a
residual spray, such as Bedlam
Plus and JT Eaton Kills Bed
Bugs Plus . Residual sprays will
offer long-lasting protection
against bed bugs and
hatchlings. Bedlam Plus is
ideal for cracks and crevices
throughout the room, while JT
Eaton Plus can be used below
the cushions and bases of
sofas, chairs, edges of carpets
and other fabric items.
Remember that sprays
shouldn’t be applied to areas
that you’ll touch, walk on, or
sit on. Sprays are designed to
treat hiding places that bed
bugs are or may be, and bed
bugs tend to not want to hang
out in open areas like the
carpet or the tops of furniture.
Next, apply a bed bug powder
into confined areas where it
won’t be stirred up into the
air. Places like the edges of
carpeting, inside deep cracks
and wall voids, and inside
electrical outlets and light
switches (accessed by
removing the faceplate with a
screwdriver) are good
candidates for powders, as
sprays can’t reach into these
areas quite as well. We
recommend using a
professional powder applicator,
which offers better control
when applying the powder.
To ensure that all bed bugs are
killed, reapply the contact and
residual sprays two weeks
after the initial treatment, then
again two weeks after that, for
a total of three applications.
These reapplications make
sure that any eggs that have
hatched will be killed off so
that they can’t create a new
infestation. Bed bug powders
will not need to be reapplied,
as they work for as long as
they remain dry and
undisturbed. If you followed all of these steps, including the reapplications, you should be bed bug free in a matter of weeks For General fumigation and pest control services, Contact PEST SOLUTIONS INTEGRATED SERVICES on 08169606527(Watsapp enabled) |
German Cockroach Control & Removal: Protect Your Home Appearance What Do German Cockroaches Look Like? Size: Small and elusive, German cockroach adults are only about 1/2 to 5/8 inches (13 to 16 mm) long. Color: German cockroaches range in color from light brown or honey brown to tan, with females appearing darker than males. Characteristics: In addition to its small size, the German cockroach is characterized by a pair of dark stripes that run parallel to each other down the back of the insect. Members of the common cockroach species boast fully developed wings, which the insects use to glide through the air for short distances on rare occasions. Females possess a broader abdominal section than males and thus appear larger. Facts The most common species of pest cockroach in the world, German cockroaches are small enough to fit into the tiniest crevices and seemingly appear out of nowhere. They prefer to live in warm, moist environments and are often found in kitchen or bathroom areas indoors. The prevalence of German cockroaches largely stems from their ability to produce more eggs and develop more rapidly than other cockroach species. Food What Do German Cockroaches Eat? German cockroaches scavenge for food and demonstrate particular fondness for: Starchy or sugary items Grease Meats In addition to foods found in the kitchen, the German cockroach diet often includes household commodities like: Glue Soap Toothpaste The pests frequently locate suitable food sources in garbage discarded by humans. Biology Egg The German cockroach life cycle begins with the production of eggs , which the female carries in a purse-shaped capsule that protrudes from the abdomen. Each capsule holds about 30 to 40 eggs and requires an incubation period of about 14 to 35 days. Nymph Just before the eggs hatch, the female leaves the capsule in a crevice or similarly protected area. After hatching, newborn German cockroaches enter the nymphal stage of the life cycle and develop into adults by molting six or seven times over the course of about twelve weeks. Adult Adults typically live for an additional three to seven months and produce as many as six generations of offspring during that time. Detection Frequently gain entry into residential and commercial structures by hitching rides in cardboard boxes, grocery bags, drink containers, and secondhand furniture or appliances. Mainly emerge at night to search for food and water. Often found in or around kitchen cabinets, dishwashers, refrigerators, stoves and sinks. Can fit into cracks and crevices as narrow as 3/16 of an inch. Problems Caused by German Cockroaches Germs Though sometimes regarded as mere nuisance pests, German cockroaches are capable of causing serious problems. Like all pest cockroaches , the German variety regularly lives in or crawls through unsanitary spaces. Pathogens When the insects forage for food in kitchens and other indoor areas, the germs and bacteria on their legs and bodies often spread to items that humans commonly eat or touch. The transmitted contaminants appear to have the potential to cause gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea or food poisoning. Allergies In addition to contaminating food and household items, German cockroaches cause health problems stemming from the allergens released by their excrement and shed skins. The presence of roach feces or molted skins can result in allergic reactions and even trigger asthma attacks. Children remain most susceptible to the asthmatic effects of cockroach allergens. Signs of Infestation Cast Skin Due to the number of molts cockroaches complete as nymphs, the skin casings cast off by the insects are a telltale sign of a German cockroach infestation. Droppings The pests also leave behind droppings and empty egg capsules on a regular basis. Daytime Activity Witnessing German cockroach activity during the day is often another sign of infestation, as the insects are typically most active at night and emerge at other times only in response to extraordinary circumstances like the existence of a large number of cockroaches in a highly concentrated area. Prevention Tips Sanitation To prevent a German cockroach infestation from occurring, proper sanitation and effective home maintenance are essential. Proper sanitation involves: Cleaning up spills Sweeping up crumbs Washing dirty dishes Vacuuming often Storing food in sealed containers Emptying the garbage daily Effective home maintenance consists of sealing the holes produced by utility pipes passing through the walls especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Additionally, do not store bags or cardboard in kitchen areas where German cockroaches can hide and breed. Tips for Removal from Home Challenge to Remove Successfully removing German cockroaches from the home can quickly become an overwhelming challenge due to the reproductive abilities of the insects. German cockroaches produce more eggs per egg capsule and complete the life cycle faster than other pest cockroach species. Infestations Spread Fast Furthermore, new egg capsules begin forming only a couple weeks after females deposit the incubated ones for hatching. As a result, infestations may soon spiral out of control even despite the effects of publicly available insecticides. Fogging Does More Harm than Good DIY fogging should not be attempted because it can spread the problem or drive cockroaches deeper into walls. In most cases, the best way to handle a German cockroach infestation is to contact a licensed pest control professional with experience in eliminating the notoriously elusive and rapidly reproducing insects. LIFE CYCLE OF COCKROACHES LIFE CYCLE STAGES All cockroaches develop by completing a life cycle consisting of three distinct stages: egg, nymph, and adult. EGG PRODUCTION The cockroach life cycle starts with the production of eggs . Adult females produce between 10 and 40 eggs at a time, which they carry in specialized cases called ootheca. Generally shaped like a kidney bean or purse, the egg case is either carried by the mother or placed in a protected location until hatching. After carrying the capsule around on her abdomen for a species-specific amount of time, the female deposits the egg capsule in a protected location preferably near a food source. NYMPH TO ADULT Newly hatched cockroaches emerge from eggs as nymphs. During the nymphal stage of the cockroach life cycle, the insects grow by shedding their skin multiple times until reaching adulthood, a process known as molting. After Molting After each molt, the developing cockroaches become soft-bodied and white before eventually getting larger, getting darker in color and hardening off. The rate at which cockroaches mature into fully developed adults depends on factors like species and the conditions of the surrounding environment. In favorable conditions, cockroach nymphs can reach adulthood in a matter of weeks. Developmental Details Vary by Species While cockroaches all complete the same three phases of development, specific elements of the life cycle vary according to species. The prolific German cockroach, for example, produces 30 to 40 eggs per ootheca and carries the egg case for the duration of the incubation period, while the brownbanded cockroach lays about 13 to 18 eggs at a time and attaches the protective capsule to inconspicuous objects or surfaces. Oriental and American cockroaches also leave their egg cases in protected places. Cockroach eggs generally hatch within 20 to 60 days, depending on the species, with German cockroaches experiencing the shortest incubation period.
