Minister pays Keshi 14 million Naira AfricanFootball.com has scooped that Nigerian sports minister has paid coach Stephen Keshi for the past two months to further undermine the authority of the NFF over the coach. It was understood that Keshi has been paid 14 million Naira (about $83,000) for October and November by sports minister Tammy Danagogo even though there is no contractual agreement between the coach and the NFF. A top source informed AfricanFootball.com: “The minister has been paying Keshi directly from the NFF subvention without any input from the NFF. “This cannot be good for the relationship between employer and employee.” Keshi was in charge for the AFCON qualifiers double header against Sudan in October and then the qualifiers against Congo and South Africa last month. NFF president Amaju Pinnick has maintained a contract has not been agreed with Keshi contrary to media reports that the coach will now be paid a monthly salary of seven million Naira, a two million Naira raise from what he received in his initial contract, which ran out after the World Cup in Brazil. “We have not come to an agreement yet (with Keshi),” he said. The frosty relationship between the NFF and Keshi has worsened after the federation were ordered to re-instate the coach at the end of October. And this latest revelation can only tear employer and employee further apart. |

Watford want Egwuekwe English Championship side Watford FC are reported to be interested in the Nigeria centre-back Ed Dove Nov 20, 2014 19:27:35Super Eagles international Azubuike Egwuekwe is attracting the interest of Championship side Watford FC, according to reports coming from the UK. TheLondon Evening Standardhave revealed that the Hornets are keen to recruit a long-term defensive solution to solve their deficiencies in the centre of defence and are targeting the Warri Wolves captain. The 25-year-old stands at 6 ft 5 and would appear to have the physique and the presence to thrive in English football, particularly in the notoriously physical second tier. Egwuekwe hasn’t been first choice for the Super Eagles since 2012, but has still made nine starts for the national side since the beginning of 2013. The most recent came yesterday against South Africa in Nigeria’s crunch Cup of Nations qualifier. While he demonstrated his strength in the air, he struggled with the pace and movement of Bafana Bafana forward Tokelo Rantie. Egwuekwe and Rantie may well renew acquaintances imminently in the Championship should Watford make a move. Slavisa Jokanovic's side currently sit fifth in the Championship table, having conceded 19 goals in their 17 games to date. Following Nigeria’s draw with South Africa, the Super Eagles will definitely not be present at the 2015 Cup of Nations. Egwuekwe will, therefore, be available for club duty, and Watford or “a number of English clubs” may look to make a move. |

Nigeria vs South Africa kick-off moved Officials have confirmed that Wednesday’s AFCON 2015 showdown between Nigeria and South Africa will now kick off at 6pm, an hour behind the time earlier scheduled. “We got information that the match will now kick off at 6pm, and not 5pm as earlier slated,” NFF head of international department, Bola Oyeyode, said on Monday. A win inside the Akwa Ibom International Stadium in Uyo will book Nigeria a ticket to next year’s Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Equatorial Guinea. The match coordination meeting will take place from 7pm on Tuesday at the Hotel L’Meridien, to be coordinated by match commissioner, Ghanaian Laryea Louis. Also, the itinerary of the South African contingent changed, with officials confirming the team would travel direct by chartered flight from Johannesburg to Uyo. They will arrive at 8pm Nigerian time. FIFA/CAF match commissioner, Paul Bassey, has already informed the Akwa Ibom State Government of the need for a landing permit for the South African delegation. |

The north African nation have asked for the tournament to be postponed until 2016 over fears the Ebola disease could reach the country if they host it in January. Morocco have confirmed they have opted out of hosting the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in light of the Ebola crisis across the continent. The country have asked for the tournament to be shifted to 2016 to prevent the possible spread of the disease that has ravaged three countries in west Africa, and avoid harming their tourism industry. Earlier this week the governing body handed Morocco a deadline of this Saturday to make a decision over the competition ahead of a further meeting between African nations in Cairo next week. A statement from Morocco’s sports ministry said: “The decision is dictated by health reasons because of the serious threat of Ebola and the risk of its spreading.” The Confederation of African football (CAF) has rejected the idea of postponing or cancelling the competition and will now need to look for new hosts, less than two months before the start of the tournament on January 17, 2015. Ghana and South Africa have both been approached over staging the showpiece, but neither country has expressed an interested in doing so. Morocco's refusal could see the nation handed sanctions in the form of a suspension from future tournaments, despite offering to host the Afcon in 2017 as way of compensating for their late withdrawal. |

Ferguson told me he would stay for three years - Van Persie The Dutch striker admits that he was deeply affected by the Scot's decision to retire in 2013 and also realises his current form is not good enough By Sam Lee Nov 8, 2014 10:44:00 Manchester United striker Robin van Persie says that Sir Alex Ferguson told him that he would stay at Old Trafford for three years - less than one year before announcing his retirement. Van Persie helped fire United to their 20th league title - Ferguson's 13th and last - after signing from Arsenal in 2012, scoring 26 goals in 38 appearances. Former United defender Rio Ferdinand recently revealed that the Dutchman was hit hardest by Ferguson's decision to step down in May 2013, something which the striker now admits. "Rio is a great guy. He talks a lot but there is some truth in that," Van Persie told the press. "My decision to come to Manchester was partly because of the presence of Ferguson - or, excuse me, Sir Alex - and he told me he'd stay for another three years. I enjoyed his approach. "We were once 18 points clear of City but we lost at home 2-1. We were still 15 points ahead but he was furious. Then I realised: he's a winner." Van Persie also accepts that his current form has fallen short of expectations under Louis van Gaal this season. "Three goals in nine games is not enough," he lamented. "Against Chelsea I had a nice chance and I had three options: chip it, go round the keeper or just [shoot] straight at the goal. "I chose the last and safest. If I hadn't have thought it over I would've just chipped it. I just have to trust again in my intuition." |
