Politics / Why Acn Imposes Candidates – Akande by opabukun(m): 9:59am On Jan 20, 2011
OSHOGBO— NATIONAL Chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Chief Bisi Akande, has justified the imposition of candidates by party elders saying it was the culture of the party that the leadership knew best.

Akande who spoke in an interview with newsmen also defended the choice of erstwhile Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC as the party’s presidential candidate. He said that with the choice of Ribadu, the party has commenced the process of turning over leadership to the youths.

The ACN chairman who spoke to newsmen as part of events marking his birthday noted: “The British democracy is the oldest in the world and you cannot see political parties there conducting primary elections before choosing their candidates. They do it by picking competent hands that are trustworthy in the judgment of the party. So, we believe that elections under a democratic setting is when we are contesting with other political party during polls.

“If election within our party is what you are trying to describe as internal democracy, then we reject such idea. Can we impose when we are contesting against PDP?

Party knows what people want

“But we can do something within our party if the leadership of the party feels that that is the best thing. This is because it is the leadership of the party that understands the manifestoes of the party and knows what the people really want.

“This is not a matter of an individual but the party. Nobody should accuse ACN of imposition because that is our style. Anyone that is not comfortable with that should go and contest in another political party. So if you see anyone carrying placard around, he is wasting his time.

We know the efforts we made before the party becomes what it is today and where were they when we were making the efforts. It is when they saw that the party is popular that they were attracted to it and we don’t expect them to come and hijack the party because of their dirty money.”

On the choice of Ribadu as the party’s presidential candidate, Akande said: “In August last year, our party decided to migrate from using the old hands and resolved to make use of the youths. That was why we encouraged the youths to pick our forms for the elections.

We felt that the youth of this country have been denied the opportunity to be in the forefront in the political life. So, we wanted them to be able to come forward and showcase their stuff.

“So, our party is determined to create opportunity for the youths to partake in the elections and governance. As a result of this, we allocated enough space for the youth in our party. It is our desire to see the youths operating while we are still alive and we are trying to accomplish that. Therefore, because Nuhu Ribadu falls within that bracket, he was able to get our ticket for the presidential election.”

Northern Leaders, Atiku, in fresh plot against Jonathan
News Jan 19, 2011

By JIDE AJANI, Editor, Northern Operations
ABUJA—THE Northern Political Leaders Forum, NPLF, and its consensus candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have gone back to the drawing board to map out fresh strategies on the way forward, Vanguard can reveal.

Vanguard can also reveal that the possible outcome of consultations being made by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar do not point in the direction of a likely cessation of confrontation on the matter of zoning contrary to insinuations that he is under pressure to concede victory.

This is happening at a time President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential flag-bearer is intensifying reconciliation efforts meant to assuage the fears of party leaders who lost at the various congresses, as well as forge a more united front for the party ahead of the April presidential election.

Meeting on way forward for Atiku and the plot

Vanguard discovered that between 6:20 pm and 8:30 pm, Saturday, January 15, 2011, proponents of the zoning arrangement of the PDP met at the residence of Mallam Adamu Ciroma to discuss what an insider described as “the review of the presidential primaries of the PDP and to plan the next line of action.”

Among those in attendance at the meeting were former Inspector General of Police, IGP, MD Yusuf; Alhaji Bello Kirfi, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai and Ahmed Mohammed Gusau, among others. Ciroma told those in attendance that the rumour about a possible betrayal on the part of General Ibrahim Babangida who was also rumoured to have sent a congratulatory message to President Jonathan may not be true after all, but that the PDP state governors were the ones who swayed victory in favour of President Jonathan.

A Vanguard source, however, said that Mallam Ciroma suggested that part of the defeat of Atiku should be laid squarely at the feet of Atiku because he “did not listen and did not make use of the pieces of advice that were suggested to him.” In fact, Vanguard was made to understand that some of those in attendance agreed that an earlier suggestion to Atiku not to participate in the presidential contest was rebuffed by the latter.

The meeting, apart from resolving to continue with the pursuit of the litigation about the propriety or otherwise of a President Jonathan being presented by the PDP, also devised other further approaches to the matter of zoning.

One of such, Vanguard discovered, would be to thoroughly comb the PDP Constitution with a fine tooth comb with a view to ascertaining “what the law states in the event that should Mr. President (be) eventually disqualified by the court” and whether the PDP would be “allowed to nominate another candidate, or would the aspirant that came second at the PDP Presidential primaries be chosen”.

Interestingly, one of those in attendance insisted that the major plank of opposition on the zoning arrangement that was perceived as being flouted with the participation of President Jonathan should be the law courts. And whereas an enlarged meeting of the NPLF was earlier proposed for either last Sunday, January 16, 2011, or Monday, January 17, 2011, the plan was shelved because of the need for proper representation.

The meeting also noted that every member of the consensus quartet did his best in support of Atiku’s candidacy but insisted that the state governors held the ace. Vanguard noted that on Friday, January 14, 2011, the day after the PDP presidential contest, Atiku had held a closed door meeting with a few of his associates at his residence in Asokoro. In attendance at that meeting were Ciroma, Senator Ben Obi, the DG of the Atiku Campaign Organisation, Yakassai, Dubem Onyia, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, Mohammed Shaba Lafiaji and Bashir Yusuf, among others.

While reviewing the contest, the general consensus was that the “voting pattern at the primaries was done in such a way as to pave way for Mr. President to win.”

Jonathan intensifies reconciliation

Vanguard can also reveal that reconciliation efforts of President Jonathan have engaged a more purposeful gear. Feelers from Aso Rock Presidential Villa and some confidants of Mr. President suggest that the latter was not leaving any stone unturned in his bid to bring disparate interests together to work for the party at the April presidential elections.

A source said that at “formal and informal levels, the direct and indirect levels, the President has been holding consultations and re-assuring all that he would operate by the words he declared after his victory that there is no victor and no vanquished.

“If you look at the way the President was able to engage the state governors at last month’s NEC meeting, he kept his promise and was able to work well with the state governors. He is also promising the same thing and expects and believes that members of the party must come together, irrespective of earlier held positions before the presidential contest. And I can honestly tell you that Mr. President is making good progress.”

Vanguard has also been reliably informed that one of those playing a very significant role in the on-going reconciliation moves are former Board of Trustees Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih. Also said to be playing a pivotal role is Vice President Namadi Sambo, Senate President David Mark, Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel, among others.

There were, however, fresh indications that Atiku’s challengers for the NPLF consensus presidential aspirant may have resolved with him to remain within the party and pursue their plans without going to court.

This it was learnt followed another meeting between Atiku, Babangida and Gusau on Sunday night where issues from the primaries were articulated.

Rest in Peace?
I am impressed by this show of love to our dear Gani by atleast 95% of NL posters.
But if I may ask, How do one 'rest in peace' after death?
Read Hebrews 9:27, "And as it is appointed unto men once to die,but after this the judgement".Did Gani accept the Lord Jesus Christ as his Lord and personal saviour while with us?.That is the most critical question to ask and not why he requested for his chambers to be closed,or if his kids are incompetent,or how long can those books continue to be relevant,or how did he even make all those money?

We are all probably 'luckier' than Gani.We still have time to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and saviour, "Neither is there salvation in any other:for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved, Acts 4:12".Not even goodwill done while alive or dead.
Consider this!

Back to the subject at hand. It is disappointing that Gani Fawehinmi took the extreme step of dissolving what was considered to be one of the better chambers in the country. Surely, he could have groomed someone to take it over, or sold it as a going concern. the idea of clients having to find new lawyers is mind boggling.

Managing a law chamber is quite different from managing any other type of businesses, a law chamber is what you start with your own vision, knowledge and intellect, is not just a line of business that can be inherited. Late Gani has done his own bit for nigeria and at the moment he can do no more because he's dead! Let the living nigerians take their own destiny into their own hands instead of critizising the will of LATE GANI FAWEHINMI.
His vision can't be like any other persons, can only be compared. even while alive, he did monitor ALL cases & briefs especially those of the less priviledgs. He has up to 8 children (competent lawyers) with diff. visions. so, d question is, who is going 2 streamline is own conceived vision into Gani's? wont dear be conflict of interest? we all know how Gani detest people like Tinubu, Akala & co.,but alas, one of his son who got married last Dec 4th, invited these set of people!
He is doing more even in death! He has the largest law Library in Nigeria;if not Africa(wit a collection of over 290,000 law & law related books). He had instructed these books 2be taken 2his Library in his new ofix @ CBD,Alausa for whoeva interested 2pick & digets @ no cost. Beside, his main business that generate almost 90% of his wealth is from Nigerian Law Publications Ltd. (1985-to date) is still functioning effectively. and any good lawyer in Nigeria depend on this Weekly Reports.

uche13:

I dint also get this. Why cant any Nigerian business survive to the next generation the way we see it happen abroad. A mans business should outlive him
. Any man without a successor can not be said to be a true success. The issue with our dear country is the sentiments we attach towards issues like this. Who said your children must take over your business. If none of them are competent, simple get an outsider who you believe is in tune with your vision and let him continue on with your legacy. Imagine explaining to his great-great grand kids the kind of legal luminary their great father was without any chambers to show for it. Its sad and i personally feel pained.
Nigerian Law Publications Ltd. is the first Law Reports in West Africa. Started in 1985, it has being producing weekly law reports week in week out consistently. the 1st and the best yet even after his death.

LOL. I wish rent was this cheap in the united kigdom! 400k per annum?! wow that's excellent. The reason why they do not collect rent a year in advance in western countries is because rent is so expensive. rent in Britain can cost up to £10,000 or more which just under 3million naira. I might just relocate to nigeria and live there for 3 years. I would pay everythig in advance. Life would be grand!

IT A TIN OF GIVE & TAKE IN D WESTERN WORLD. D WAY U RCV IS D WAY U PAY! IF U RELOCATE & GET A WORK (LUCKILY) IN 9JER WIT SAME QUALIFICATION U R RITE NOW WORKING WIT, U WILL BE UNDERPAID COMPARED 2WAT U RCV IN UK NOW. BESIDE U HV ACCESS TO SUM FREE AMENITIES WICH U WILL BE OVERCHARGED FOR IN 9JER e>g PHCN WIL BILL U PER MONTH EVEN IF U DIDNT HV POWER SUPPLY FOR UP TO 10HRS WIITIN DAT MONTH. WORST STILL IF U PAY IN ADVANCE, U R DOOMED! AN OPEN LETA TO JEG

Jeg, is it by fire by thunder u rule? it would have been an honourable tin 4u to allow PDP's agreement bind on u. U dont bite fingers dat fed u! if u step aside and allow woeva run 4wateva party, then let the masses decide by casting their votes 4d persons after their hearts and allow their votes count, honestly, JEG, u would be MOST RESPECTED.
it is glaring that sum people are making d country ungovernable for u. they are showing good people of 9jer and now SOLDIERS (though in a hard way) that u r  incapable of ruling this great nation. u have changed IGP,CSO,DEFENCE WTV how many times? despite ur Presidential Advisory Committee, wat result do we have?
RULING 9JER IS NOT A MUST O.

Atiku Abuakar in a statement denounced the bombings in strong terms describing it as ”senseless and wicked.”
In the statement  Mr Abubakar said he sympathises with innocent military and civilian victims caught in the bombing incident.
The former VP went on to say that the latest bomb targeted at a military establishment is an indication that ”President Jonathan cannot provide the type of leadership to secure the nation.’

The president, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has also condemned the attack, and commands the nation’s security services to rise to the occasion and arrest this new and dangerous challenge to our peace and stability.
He said in a statement that there shall be no sacred cows. All, no matter how remotely connected to these incidents, must be brought to justice.
They must be made to pay.   No one, and we repeat, no one, can make this nation ungovernable.’ he said in a statement signed by Ima Niboro.
