Crime / Stranger Disappears With One-year-old Child In Ebonyi State by Opeyemiadura3: 4:25am On Oct 18, 2019
There was anxiety in the Ogbe Hausa area of Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, as a stranger reportedly disappeared with a one-year-old child, Esomchi Oyoke.

Southern City News gathered that Esomchi went missing after a stranger, who was identified as Okechukwu from Ushegbe village in the Ezza North Local Government Area of the state, left the house.

The stranger had reportedly pleaded with the boy’s parents to accommodate him for a night before the incident happened.

Okechukwu was said to be a businessman based in Port Harcourt and always comes to Ebonyi State to buy food items in large quantities for retail in cities.

Esomchi’s father, Silas Oyoke, said, “On September 20, 2019, somebody came to me and requested that I should help him. He said he wanted to buy garri in large quantity and I took him to the Meat Market along the Gunning Road.

Later that evening, I saw the man in my house. I said, ‘Why are you here again? Didn’t my wife say you would go from the market, where you had gone to buy the garri? Why are you here again?’ He said he didn’t want to follow the 911 truck and that he would go the following morning, being Tuesday.

Silas added that it was later that his wife started looking for their child and raised the alarm.

He added, “It was at that point that my little daughter said the man, who spent the night in our house, said Esomchi should accompany him to go and buy biscuit.

From there, we started running helter-skelter. I called the number that the man gave me, but he refused to pick the call for more than five hours. It happened around 2pm and we started moving from park to park till around 11pm.

The Ekeaba Divisional Police Station confirmed the incident, but added that Silas displayed an unserious attitude to the loss of his son.

A 300-Level 'HND1'Mechanical Engineering student of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta in Ogun State, Olalekan Oladapo Ogunremi, was on Wednesday found guilty of criminal impersonation and sentenced to six months in prison.

Justice Patricia Ajoku of the Federal High Court, Ibadan had reduced the one year jail term to six months, following an appeal by the counsel to Ogunremi.

The judge succumbed to his lawyer’s passionate plea that his client had missed two examination sessions owing to the criminal charge filed against him by the Ibadan zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The 21-year-old student had pleaded guilty to the one-count amended charge with which he was arraigned on Wednesday, consequent upon a plea bargain arrangement between him and the Commission.

The offence contravenes Section 22(2)(b) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention etc) Act, 2015, and punishable under Section 22 (2)(iv) of the same Act.

Following his ‘guilty’ plea, the prosecution counsel, Babatunde Sonoiki prayed the court to sentence Ogunremi according to the terms contained in the plea bargain agreement he and the defence lawyer, Tunde Lawal, jointly signed.

Though the judge reduced the jail term, she upheld other proposed punishments contained in the agreement, including forfeiture of items recovered during his arrest and investigation, and restitution of sums in foreign currency to his victims.

Crime / EFCC Seals Osun Club Where Alleged 94 Internet Fraudsters Were Arrested by Opeyemiadura3: 7:45am On Oct 17, 2019
Following the arrest of 94 suspected internet fraudsters at a night club in Osogbo, the club, Secret Underground has been sealed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

After the Sunday night raid of the club, clubs and hoteliers in the state capital have been complaining of low patronage, as most fun-seekers were careful about night crawling for fear of arrest by operatives of the commission.

A source closed to the management of the club confided in the medium that the owner of the club had been invited by the commission but refused to honour the invite.

As at the time of filing this report, a visit to the club showed that the club is still under lock and key, while security operatives were stationed at the building.

One of the staff of the club house, who was arrested alongside other 94 suspects on Sunday said he was released on Monday after interrogation by the commission and found out he was working at the club.

He added that some of the persons arrested and later found innocent were also released after meeting their bail conditions.

It was also gathered that the owner of the club is presently not in the country, hence, the manager of the club declined to comment until he gets the permission of the owner.

Politics / Ohanaeze Ndigbo Tackles Junaid Muhammed Over Statement Against Nwodo by Opeyemiadura3: 2:32am On Oct 17, 2019
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has warned a second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed to desist from further vituperation against Igbo, noting that he should be more concerned about the level of insecurity in the north-east.

Disclosing this in a statement signed by the group’s President, Mazi okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, the Secretary General, respectively, Ohanaeze said that Igbo cannot be cowed by Junaid’s political antics, promising to produce the likes of Nnamdi Azikiwe, as Igbo Presidency come 2023.

The group equally said that it would not field the likes of Nnia Nwodo in the 2023 presidency, saying that Igbo have a lot of qualified candidate to present.

Recall that Junaid Muhammed had told ‘Daily Independent’ that when Nnia Nwodo was vying for presidency in 2003, that he (Nwodo), came with a delegate from Enugu, knelt down at the house of Lawal Jarfaru Isa, former military administrator of Kaduna and solicited for their support.

Continuing, Junaid said they laughed at Nwodo, noting that North does not support begging Culture.

In view of this revelation, Ohanaeze, opined, that “Using the antics of Nnia Nwodo to haunt the genuine aspirations of South East from taking a shot of the 2023 Presidency, is dead on arrival”

The statement reads thus:

We wish to remind Junaid Muhammed, that South East will not be provoked by the traps and pitfalls set up by few Northern Elders against the popular choice of supporting a Nigerian President of Igbo stock with a Northerner as running mate.

We’ll not remind Junaid Muhammed that quality candidates will emerge from the South East who are in the same pedigree with late Dr Nnamdi Azikwe and Chief Samuel Mbakwe.

These men see the entire Nigeria as their constituency. Based on the numerical strength of Igbo existing in all the 774 LGAs of the Country, the fundamental issues of almajiris which the likes of Dr Junaid Muhammed had failed to address would be resolved.

Igbo Youths wishes to assure Dr Junaid Muhammed, that Chief Nnia Nwodo will not be among the Presidential materials we will present in 2023 Presidential race.

We are strict on age and qualities of who ever we will project in 2023. Among those who would possess the need qualities include; current Governors, former Governors, Senators and legion of respected Sons and daughters who had international statue, that equals the Great Zik of Africa.

We assure Dr Junaid Muhammed that a new wife will be given to him immediately the National Committee on 2023 Igbo Presidency Project financed by Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council in diaspora, will be inaugurated in November 1st 2019, with the sole aim of supporting a President of Igbo stock in 2023.

Education / Eight University Of Ibadan School Pupils Sue Varsity Over Hijab by Opeyemiadura3: 5:13am On Aug 19, 2019
Eight students of the International School, University of Ibadan have individually filed actions before the Oyo State High Court seeking to confirm their rights to wear hijab in school.

The controversy about wearing hijab to the school became a public issue in November last year when some parents under the aegis of UI-ISI Muslim Parents’ Forum petitioned the University of Ibadan, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) UI who doubled as chairman of the Board of Governors of the school; the school principal, Mrs Phebean Olowe, and the school for disallowing their wards to wear hijab.

The Muslim parents on behalf of their wards approached Oyo state High Court in Ibadan, asking it to mandate the school to allow their wards to use hijab to school.

But Justice Ladiran Akintola of the state High Court 9 on Tuesday, June 25 struck suit.

Akintola premised his judgment on the fact that the section of the constitution on human rights issues should be filed individually and not collectively as done by the parents.

The Chairman, Muslim Parents’ Forum of the School, Alhaji Abdurahman Balogun, on Sunday said the applicants had complied with the court directive to file the matter individually.

Balogun said, “We are back in court. This is to inform you all that sequel to court directive to file the matter individually as regards fundamental human rights, we have since complied and new cases assigned.

Balogun maintained that the decision of the students to return to court was simply to “liberate our children and Muslims who were oppressed, intimidated and coerced not to express their faith, freedom as guaranteed by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Crime / Groom Cried; As 63 People Were Bombed To Death At His Wedding Party (photos) by Opeyemiadura3: 5:58pm On Aug 18, 2019
A suicide bomber turned a wedding celebration into horror and carnage, after targeting a packed wedding hall, killing at least 63 people and wounding scores of others in what was the deadliest attack to rock Afghanistan in months.

The blast, which took place late Saturday August 17th in west Kabul, came as Washington and the Taliban finalise a deal to reduce the US military presence in Afghanistan and hopefully build a roadmap to a ceasefire.

The groom, who only gave his name as Mirwais, recalled greeting smiling guests in the afternoon, before seeing their bodies being carried out hours later.

The attack “changed my happiness to sorrow. My family, my bride are in shock, they cannot even speak. My bride keeps fainting. I lost my brother, I lost my friends, I lost my relatives. I will never see happiness in my life again” Mirwais told local TV station Tolo News.

Interior ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said at least 63 people had been killed and 182 injured out of about 1,200 guests.

The wedding guests were dancing and celebrating the party when the blast happened. Following the explosion, there was total chaos. Everyone was screaming and crying for their loved ones” recounted Munir Ahmad, 23, who was seriously injured and whose cousin was among the dead.

The wedding was believed to be a Shia gathering and Shia Muslims are frequently targeted in Sunni-majority Afghanistan, particularly by the so-called Islamic State group, which is also active in Kabul but did not immediately issue any claim of responsibility

Politics / I Weep Over Women Marginalisation Not Only In Nigeria But In Africa. "Sanwo-olu" by Opeyemiadura3: 2:01pm On Aug 18, 2019
The Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, says she weeps over women plights and marginalisation not only in Nigeria but in entire Africa.

Sanwo-Olu expressed the concern on Saturday at a one-day seminar and inauguration of the Lagos State Chapter of SHE COOPS Nigeria, an NGO for women empowerment and participation in cooperatives.

Reports have it that the NGO was initiated in the state by Dr Appolonia Eke, the Executive Director, Amazing Care Foundation, who is also the state coordinator of SHE COOPS.

Sanwo-Olu was represented at the event by Mrs Roseline Idimogu, the Wife of a Lagos State lawmaker, Mr Jude Idimogu, representing Oshodi-Isolo II. She said that women must be empowered for society to move forward.

I have seen the plights of women especially the underprivileged ones; if you go to the remote areas, you will see what women are going through. “When we go to some parts of Africa, where women are going through serious marganisation, I weep.

The species, called woman, has passed through torture by humanity, and being a woman, I feel I have to contribute to improving their lot.

They are a unique set of people, who when armed with skills and abilities, can change the world. I will like to see every woman in Nigeria have a voice,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Sanwo-Olu called for education of the girl-child and other women, saying that their education would reduce poverty. She described women as a pillar of the home and society, hence the need to give attention to their empowerment.

The Country Programme Manager of SHE COOPS, Mrs Grace Adeola, said that the inauguration was aimed at building a better world for every woman.

She called for massive empowerment of women to bring real change to the world. According to her, when women are developed, families, societies and the world at large will be better.

She said that the major challenge of women empowerment remained to fund for skills acquisition. She said that the NGO had sought for funds internationally from those whose goals and ambitions were to develop women.

In a goodwill message, the Lagos State Coordinator of SHE COOPS, Eze, said that hidden treasures in most women had not been discovered because the society had yet to encourage them enough to exhibit what they had.

I dream of a Nigeria where a woman will be a leader, I dream of a Nigeria where 45 per cent of women will occupy the parliament, I dream of a Nigeria where we would have 35 per cent of professionals being women.

From my dealings with women of low, middle and high classes, I got to know that women are unique species and agent of change. “If they are empowered, the whole nation is empowered.

There are many hindering factors debarring women access to empowerments; that gap is SHE COOPs is out to bridge,” she said. Eke commended the Sanwo-Olu led Lagos State Government’s investment in women empowerment programmes over the years.

The Kano State SHE COOPS Coordinator, Mrs Grace Jokayemi, urged women not to be liability but asset to the society in order to make an impact, saying that the NGO was out to provide them with basic empowerments.

Reports have it that women numbering about 2,000 were divided into 85 groups to showcase skills in the production of several items which include spices, liquid soap, purses, plantain chips and bags.

The others are yam flour, plantain flour, beads, cream, bean flour, bread, custard, snacks, bleach, coconut milk, detergents, activated coconut charcoal, antiseptic, pop-corn, coconut oil, fruit juice, perfume and organic soap
