Variables

What is a Variable?
There are different ways to define variable, let see few:
• Donald Knuth: - A quantity that may possess different values as a program is being executed.
• Mehran Sahami: - A box in which we stuff things – i.e. a box with variable content.
• Wikipedia: - User defined keyword that is linked to a value stored in computer’s memory (runtime).
•A symbol or name that stands for a value.
• A variable is a value that can change.
• Variables provide temporary storage for information that will be needed during the lifespan of the computer program (or application).

Don’t let us pay attention to how it was defined, let us just pick the key point and concept which is that “variable store value for the period of running of the program”

For example:
z = x + y
Variables Example:
• This is an example of programming expression.
• x, y and z are variables.
• Variables can represent numeric values, characters, character strings, or memory addresses.

In a program every, variable has:
– NAME (Identifier) e. g x, y and z
– DATA Type (nature of data store in the variable)
– SIZE
– VALUE (this is the content store in the variable)

Loosely Typed / Strictly Typed Languages
Loosely Typed Languages: these are programming languages in which the programmer needs not to explicitly specify the type of data to be stored in the variable e.g PHP, JavaScript e.tc.
If the following works:
x = 10;
x = "Fred";
then it's loosely typed (two different types of data in the same variable and scope).

Strongly Typed Language: Languages where variables must be declared to contain a specific type of data.

String myString = "Peter";
then your language is strictly typed, variable "myString" is explicitly declared to contain only string data. Then it's loosely typed .

Types of Variable
• there are two types of variables:
– Local variable
– Global variable

Types of Variable
• Local variables are those that are in scope within a specific part of the program (function, procedure, method, or subroutine, depending on the programming language employed).
• Global variables are those that are in scope for the duration of the programs execution. They can be accessed by any part of the program, and are readwrite for all statements that access them.

Rules in Naming a Variable
• There a certain rules in naming variables (identifier).
• They are: – It should use only alphabets, number and underscore ( _ )
– It should not begin with a number and must have at least one alphabet.
– It should not be a reserved word.

• Examples of reserved word:
Main, log, if do continue, short, else, return, const, int, double, break, void, while, char e.t.c

A newbie programmer who happened to be Computer Scientist once asked me this question sometimes ago.

What is an algorithm.

An algorithm is a well-defined step by step procedure that describes how to solve a problem. Algorithms are more precise than informal instructions and do not require any insight to follow; they are still not precise enough for a computer to follow in the form they are written, but are precise enough for a human to know exactly what you mean, so they can then work out how to implement your algorithm, either doing it themselves, or writing a computer program to do it. The other important thing with this level of precision is that we can often make a good estimate of how fast it will be.

For example:
Let's say you want to create a program which allows the user to enter a number the program will evaluate if the number is even or odd and print the result on the screen.

So I come up with this Algorithm:
1. First, declare 2 variables. (1 for storing the number the user will enter, 1 for storing the remainder after modulus by 2).
2. Give the user a message informing him/her to enter a number.
3. Allow the user to enter a number and store it in the first variable.
4. Divide in modulus mode by 2 and store the remainder in the second variable.
5. Check with conditional statement IF the remainder is equal to 0, Display on the screen ("Entered number is an even number" wink

ELSE Display on the screen (("Entered number is an odd number" wink

.
Now the above step-by-step process to create our program is what is known as Algorithm.
Algorithms are often expressed using a loosely defined format called pseudo-code , which matches a programming language fairly closely, but leaves out details that could easily be added later by a programmer. Pseudo-code doesn't have strict rules about the sorts of commands you can use, but it's halfway between an informal instruction and a specific computer program or flowchart a diagrammatical illustration of the algorithm using symbols.

Below is the implementation of the above algorithm in JAVA;

By creating algorithm you will be able to evaluate all the possible solution to specific problem.
The most important thing to remember about algorithms is that there can be many different algorithms for the same problem, but some are much better than others. It’s a bad programming methodology to start writing computer program without analyzing and write the best algorithms for the problem at hand. I encourage you to study and inculcate into your carrier, the act of algorithm writing.

a. Programming is a concept, coding is an Art, try to understand the concept of programming and learn the art of coding. Then your language of choice, refer to my previous article ( How To Learn Any Programming Language Quickly )

b. Don’t just MUG-UP, Understand: by typing and running the code sample by your tutor doesn’t make you a pro. But by understanding every line, statement, declaration and structure of that code and you can apply the concept to real life problem solving means you are progressing.

c. Note: the time you spend practicing is more important than your studying time (practice more).

d. Before you start learning any language, it will be of help, if you already had a problem to solve with that language. This will serves as a testing ground for what you are learning and you will be able to apply your newly learnt skills to a real life problem.

e. Don’t rush, coding takes time, effort, fearless attitude, dedication, consistency, persistency and I can do it spirit.

f. Don’t be discouraged, don’t doubt yourself, you can do it.

A lot of programming newbies are faced with the common question (which language do i learn first and how do i start). base on many years of programming, i will suggest you figure out your area of specialization, I mean, are you interested in web app, desktop app, mobile app, game, hardware embedded programs and so on. your answer will determine which programming language to learn, because each programming language has their strength and weakness, therefore you must select a programming language that has the full capacity to handle your choice of application.

Note: because all programming languages have some features like (variable, operator, statement, condition, loops etc ) in common steps listed below may be helpful:

1. Learn Language basics
a. Variable type
b. Operators
c. Basic input and output
d. Basic program structure

2. Learn data structure / containers
a. Dictionary
b. Set
c. List
d. Array

3. Learn basic file I/O
a. How to read a file in
b. How to write a file out
c. This goes from simple reading of a text file to database

4. Learn some basic Networking with your language
a. Making HTTP requests with your language
i. learn how to GET, POST, DELETE e.t.c
ii. how to set your requests properly
iii. how to handle responses and status codes.
b. Learn some SOCKET programming in your language.

5. Learn Object Oriented / Functional programming paradigm tools
a. For Object Oriented, you need to learn how to use CLASSES, INHERITANCE, POLYMORPHISM e.t.c
b. For Functional programming, you need to learn how your language uses BLOCKS or LAMBDAS, how function pointers or callback works.

6. Learn how to build project in your language
a. e.g in C++ you'll have to learn how to build static libraries, shared libraries, how o link your applications properly.

7. Learn Extra goodies in any language of your choice
a. e.g Ruby has a lot of cool methods on enumerated types, JAVA has a lot of libraries to make your life easy e.t.c

Breaking down your learning this way will aid your focus and concentration.
