Health / Dexamethasone Is First Life-saving Coronavirus Drug by ossybluez(m): 2:02pm On Jun 16, 2020
A cheap and widely available drug called dexamethasone can help save the lives of patients who are seriously ill with coronavirus.
UK experts say the low-dose steroid treatment is a major breakthrough in the fight against the deadly virus.
It cut the risk of death by a third for patients on ventilators. For those on oxygen, it cut deaths by a fifth.
The drug is part of the world's biggest trial testing existing treatments to see if they also work for coronavirus.
Researchers estimate that if the drug had been used to treat patients in the UK from the start of the coronavirus pandemic up to 5,000 lives could have been saved. Because it is cheap, it could also be of huge benefit in poorer countries struggling with high numbers of Covid-19 patients.
Latest coronavirus updates
Life-saver
About 19 out of 20 patients with coronavirus recover without being admitted to hospital. Of those who are admitted to hospital, most also recover, but some may need oxygen or mechanical ventilation. These are the high-risk patients whom dexamethasone appears to help.
The drug is already used to reduce inflammation in a range of other conditions, and it appears that it helps stop some of the damage that can happen when the body's immune system goes into overdrive as it tries to fight off coronavirus.
The body's over-reaction is called a cytokine storm and it can be deadly.
In the trial, led by a team from Oxford University, around 2,000 hospital patients were given dexamethasone and were compared with more than 4,000 who did not receive the drug.
For patients on ventilators, it cut the risk of death from 40% to 28%. For patients needing oxygen, it cut the risk of death from 25% to 20%.
Chief investigator Prof Peter Horby said: "This is the only drug so far that has been shown to reduce mortality - and it reduces it significantly. It's a major breakthrough."
Lead researcher Prof Martin Landray says the findings suggest that for every eight patients treated on ventilators, you could save one life.
For those patients treated with oxygen, you save one life for approximately every 20-25 treated with the drug.
"There is a clear, clear benefit. The treatment is up to 10 days of dexamethasone and it costs about £5 per patient. So essentially it costs £35 to save a life. This is a drug that is globally available."
Prof Landray said, when appropriate, hospital patients should now be given it without delay, but people should not go out and buy it to take at home.
Dexamethasone does not appear to help people with milder symptoms of coronavirus - those who don't need help with their breathing.
The Recovery Trial has been running since March. It included the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine which has subsequently been ditched amid concerns that it increases fatalities and heart problems.
Another drug called remdesivir, an antiviral treatment that appears to shorten recovery time for people with coronavirus, is already being made available on the NHS.
The first drug proven to cut deaths from Covid-19 is not some new, expensive medicine but an old, cheap-as-chips steroid.
That is something to celebrate because it means patients across the world could benefit immediately. That's why the top-line results of this trial have been rushed out - because the implications are so huge globally.
Dexamethasone has been used since the early 1960s to treat a wide range of conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and asthma. Half of all Covid patients who require a ventilator do not survive, so cutting that risk by a third would have a huge impact.
The drug is given intravenously in intensive care, and in tablet form for less seriously ill patients. So far, the only other drug proven to benefit Covid patients is remdesivir, an antiviral treatment which has been used for Ebola.
That has been shown to reduce the duration of coronavirus symptoms from 15 days to 11, but the evidence was not strong enough to show whether it reduced mortality. Unlike dexamethasone, remdesivir is a new drug with limited supplies and a price has yet to be announced.

Health / Malaria 'completely Stopped' By Microbe by ossybluez(m): 8:09pm On May 04, 2020
*Malaria 'completely stopped' by microbe*
Scientists have discovered a microbe that completely protects mosquitoes from being infected with malaria.
The team in Kenya and the UK say the finding has "enormous potential" to control the disease.
Malaria is spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes, so protecting them could in turn protect people.
The researchers are now investigating whether they can release infected mosquitoes into the wild, or use spores to suppress the disease.
What is this microbe?
The malaria-blocking bug, Microsporidia MB, was discovered by studying mosquitoes on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya. It lives in the gut and genitals of the insects.
The researchers could not find a single mosquito carrying the Microsporidia that was harbouring the malaria parasite. And lab experiments, published in Nature Communications, confirmed the microbe gave the mosquitoes protection.
Microsporidias are fungi, or at least closely related to them, and most are parasites.
However, this new species may be beneficial to the mosquito and was naturally found in around 5% of the insects studied.
How big a discovery is it?
"The data we have so far suggest it is 100% blockage, it's a very severe blockage of malaria," Dr Jeremy Herren, from the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) in Kenya told the BBC.
He added: "It will come as a quite a surprise. I think people will find that a real big breakthrough."
More than 400,000 people are killed by malaria each year, most of them children under the age of five.
While huge progress has been made through the use of bed nets and spraying homes with insecticide, this has stalled in recent years. It is widely agreed new tools are needed to tackle malaria.
How does the microbe stop malaria?
The fine details still need to be worked out.
But Microsporidia MB could be priming the mosquito's immune system, so it is more able to fight off infections.
Or the presence of the microbe in the insect could be having a profound effect on the mosquito's metabolism, making it inhospitable for the malaria parasite.
Microsporidia MB infections appear to be life-long. If anything, the experiments show they become more intense, so the malaria-blocking effect would be long-lasting.
When can this be used against malaria?
At the very least, 40% of mosquitoes in a region need to be infected with Microsporidia in order to make a significant dent in malaria.
The microbe can be passed between adult mosquitoes and is also passed from the female to her offspring.
So, the researchers are investigating two main strategies for increasing the number of infected mosquitoes.
Microsporidia form spores which could be released en masse to infect mosquitoes
Male mosquitoes (which don't bite) could be infected in the lab and released into the wild to infect the females when they have sex
"It's a new discovery. We are very excited by its potential for malaria control. It has enormous potential," Prof Steven Sinkins, from the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research, told the BBC.
This concept of disease control using microbes is not unprecedented. A type of bacteria called Wolbachia has been shown to make it harder for mosquitoes to spread dengue fever in real-world trials.
Bacterial allies make dengue fever cases dive
GM fungus rapidly kills 99% of malaria mosquitoes
What happens next?
The scientists need to understand how the microbe spreads, so they plan to perform more tests in Kenya.
However, these approaches are relatively uncontroversial as the species is already found in wild mosquitoes and is not introducing something new.
It also would not kill the mosquitoes, so would not have an impact on ecosystems that are dependent on them as food. This is part of other strategies like a killer fungus that can almost completely collapse mosquito populations in weeks.

Education / COVID-19: FG Grants Nigerian Students, Free Subscription To E-learning by ossybluez(m): 7:16am On Apr 25, 2020
The Federal Government granted Nigerian students free subscription to e-learning through some selected sites in partnership with some major networks in the country. Mr Emeka Nwajiuba, Minister of State for Education, made this known during the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 daily press briefing in Abuja.

He said the federal government granted free subscription to students during the lockdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that some selected sites could now be accessed by the student for free lectures.

According to him, Airtel users can browse the site for free while MTN and Glo are still adjusting their technical system for their subscribers to access the free site, adding that both Radio and Television stations could also be accessed for the lecture.

He said the online classes were conducted like the offline, adding that the classes could be taken in real time if the students were online and they could also get the lectures after the classes were over and such student was not online at such time.
He said what the ministry was doing was to synchronise them in order to meet the yearnings of the students during the lockdown period occasioned by COVID-19.

Also, the Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Mr Festus Kenyamo said the health workers that were recently relieved of their appointment would have to engage the ministry for a possible way out of the impasse.

He said that though the ministry did not have the details of what led to the disengagement of their appointment but “our duty is to act as conciliator, stressing that since the courts were not sitting, the ministry will not sit akimbo.

” The disengaged health workers can get across to the ministry through the email of my personal address on social media for the ministry to act as conciliator,” he said.

He stated that the ministry knew the importance of health workers at this time of COVID-19 pandemic and so, privilege of mediating in the logjam would be provided to the health workers to resolve the disagreement.

Education / IPPIS Creating More Problems Than Values In Universities – Vice-chancellor by ossybluez(m): 9:20am On Jan 27, 2020
The Vice Chancellor Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna Professor Abdullahi Bala has blamed challenges in the IPPIS implementation on the failure of the federal government and handlers of the scheme to involve university administrators before it was launched.

Professor Bala fielding questions from journalists on the activities lined up for the pre-37th Founder’s day and 29th Convocation of the university said if the federal government had consulted widely the logjams being experienced over IPPIS implementation would have been avoided.

The Vice Chancellor told the Press Conference which took place at the university’s permanent site, Gidan-Kwano that it is regrettable the way and manner the IPPIS is being handled is rather becoming more complicated than trying to solve some challenges facing universities and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

“The autonomy bill of 2010 takes care of things of this nature. Nobody will be forced to enroll in IPPIS. It is a personal decision and agreed by individual schools management, some ASUU, SANU and NASU members enrolled and some decided to opt out”.

“In trying not to go against the NUC mandate that specialized universities should not lose focus on their mandate, but for the sake of ensuring that we maintain global standards, we engage some lecturers to handle some courses outside the scope of lecturer we have”.

Professor Bala said, some courses require legal professionals or lecturers in core arts or social sciences to handle but we don’t have them here to avoid going against NUC mandate and to get experts handle such courses because these categories of lecturers were not captured by the IPPIS, what do we do?
The Vice Chancellor also said, “IPPIS does not provide for professionals as contract staff but we have always engaged a number of them and still do so when the need arises including the Diaspora, because we don’t have enough lecturers to fill the gap, how do we settle them?

It is also clear that no university in Nigeria can boast of adequate teaching and non-teaching staff but depend on adhoc staff example accounting and general studies in some engineering courses with an aspect of law but the IPPIS never took some of these into considerations, he observed.

Other issues the IPPIS propagators are also hammering on including sabbaticals and visiting by university academic staff, the Vice Chancellor pointed out would have been better strengthened between the federal government and university administrators if the later were carried along.

Professor Bala also explained that most state owned and private universities largely depended on academic staff from federal universities as visiting Lecturers or Professors on sabbatical, this he pointed out is a common rule globally and Nigeria cannot be isolated from this.

It has become obvious that the IPPIS has continued to create gaps between the management of universities, NASU, ASUU, SANU and related stakeholders, this according to the Vice Chancellor would have been avoided if he and other Vice Chancellor were invited on a roundtable to discuss on a way forward before unleashing the IPPIS on them.

The Vice Chancellor who however said he is not in any way against implementation of the IPPIS called for caution in its implementations to avoid grounding of government owned Universities, Colleges of Education and Polytechnics in Nigeria.

Education / FG Denies Tuition Hike, Says Education Bank Underway by ossybluez(m): 10:15am On Oct 04, 2018
The Federal Ministry of Education on Wednesday said there was no plan to increase the tuition to N350, 000 per session as claimed by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, noting that the establishment of an Education Bank was already in the pipeline.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Sonny Echono, stated this in Abuja while reacting to the allegations by the ASUU, noting that the re-establishment of the Education Bank was to provide students with loans and other resources through a public-private partnership.

Echono, who spoke at a World Teachers’ Day Symposium, said teachers that did not have the requisite qualifications would be flushed out of the system by 2020.

Recall that it was reported on Wednesday that the ASUU Ibadan Zonal Coordinator, Dr Ade Adejumo, raised the alarm on the Federal Government’s planned increment in fees, saying the planned increment led to the collapse of the 2017/2018 renegotiation of the 2009 Federal Government/ASUU agreement.

But the Permanent Secretary denied that the government had any such plan.

Echono said, “The Federal Government did not and has no intention of introducing tuition fees in our universities, not to even mention the figure of N350, 000. This can easily be verified. The students have just registered for school and their parents are aware of how much they paid.
“What is true is that because of the commitment of the present administration to guarantee the right of the Nigerian children not only to education, but to be positively engaged, the President directed that the ministry, along with the Ministry of Finance, should jointly organise a workshop that will come up with sustainable and very workable recommendation on funding education in Nigeria.”

In a related development, the Academic Staff Union of University, Kano zone, on Wednesday, rejected plans by the Babalakin-led Federal Government negotiating team, to introduce the payment of tuition fee in the Nigerian Universities of about N350,000, just as it also supported the call by the Nigerian Labour Congress for a new minimum wage.

Politics / Ambode Confirms APC As Party Of Fraudsters by ossybluez(m): 10:12pm On Sep 30, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party on Sunday said it reviewed the world press conference held by the Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, and surmised that the governor validated its position that the All Progressives Congress allegedly consists of those it described as fraudsters and election riggers.
Governor Ambode had in the press conference stated that his opponent in the race, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was arrested for spending fake dollars in the United States of America. Ambode further stated that Sanwo-Olu was detained in the USA on account of the alleged crime.
The governor further alleged that his party, the APC, was disenfranchising its members by insisting that registered members of the party, who were yet to be issued with membership cards, will not be allowed to participate in the gubernatorial primary election.
The PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan in Abuja on Sunday, said that by “this, the whole world can see that the APC is nothing but a den of fraudsters and corrupt persons who not only cheated their way to power through lies and propaganda in 2015 but have also continued to bleed and defraud our nation with humongous sleazes and massive corruption in very high places.”
He added, “That is why the APC will have no scruples to project persons of questionable character and those with allegations of corruption hanging on the necks as their National Chairman and governorship aspirants.
“We challenge President Muhammadu Buhari to show his claimed integrity by ordering an open investigation into this huge allegation against his party’s governorship aspirant.”
Ologbondiyan called on Lagosians and Nigerians to note “this ugly trend in the APC and ensure that they throw this undesirable party to the dustbin of history, come 2019.

Politics / Adelabu Wins Oyo APC Governorship Primary by ossybluez(m): 8:37pm On Sep 30, 2018
The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State on Sunday held its governorship congress at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, with former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Adebayo Adelabu, emerging the party’s governorship candidate after other contestants stepped down for him.

After the likes of Joseph Tegbe, who was touted as Goveror Abiola Ajimobi’s anointed candidate, and other aspirants willingly stepped down from the race, Adeniyi Akintola (SAN) refused to do so as he was adamant on a full primary.

But as the election began, the legal icon announced his withdrawal from the race.

Adelabu is the grandson of the Ibadan notable politician, Adegoke Adelabu, popularly known as Penkelemesi (peculiar mess).

Former governor in the state, Adebayo Alao-Akala, on Saturday, earlier announced that he would not be part of the primary, saying Governor Ajimobi had perfected strategy to impose Tegbe on the party.

Politics / Bauchi Bye-election: We’ll Amend Constitution To Make Buhari Life President, Sa by ossybluez(m): 10:24am On Aug 11, 2018
The candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Saturday’s Bauchi South Senatorial District bye-election, Lawal-Yahaya Gumau, says if elected into the Senate, he will work towards the amendment of the Constitution to make President Muhammadu Buhari president for life.

Gumau, who is currently the member representing Toro Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and in his eighth year, said his only mandate for aspiring to go to the Senate is to protect Buhari’s interest.

He spoke at the closing of his campaign in Bauchi on Thursday.
“By God’s grace, we will amend Nigeria’s Constitution to allow Buhari to be President for the remaining years of his life. He will only cease to be President when God takes his life.

“Obasanjo tried all his best for the constitution to be amended to allow him go for a third term, but God didn’t approve of it because of its lack of sincerity. What is now needed in Nigeria is to protect Buhari’s interest and that is what we will do.”

He said, “I, Lawal-Yahaya Gumau, want you to know that the mandate that will be given to me on Saturday is to go and protect Buhari’s interest in the Senate. This is the only mandate that I will be going to the Senate with, having fulfilled every other mandate to the best of my ability while in the House of Representatives for eight years.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Zamfara State, Abdul’aziz Yari, who led three other governors to the campaign, said they were in the state on the mandate of the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, noting that it would be shameful for a candidate endorsed by Buhari to lose the election.
Celebrities / There Was No Violence At My Concert —mayorkun by ossybluez(m): 6:25pm On Jul 27, 2018
Leading DMW music act, Mayorkun, has denied allegations that have been trailing the conclusion of his recent concert held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
According to an official statement made available to Showtime, contrary to reports that the concert was characterized by insecurity, violence, assault, rape, and other unfounded allegations, adequate arrangement was provided for full protection of everybody who attended the concert.
The statement which reads in part says; “Mayorkun’s Concert, which was widely acclaimed by attendees as the best music concert to be held in the city of Ibadan was very well managed with experienced security officials in place, despite the over 13-thousand people in attendance. We will like to disassociate ourselves from news of violence going round as no such thing happened at the event. It was a free and fair event”. “Adequate security was provided for all media houses and journalists with access tags at the event, and no violence was experienced by any journalist or pressman at the event. We are aware of a report by Instablog that a reporter was manhandled by security operatives. The reporter who was confirmed drunk attempted to forcibly gain entrance into the artistes’ green room without authorized access and was prevented by security operatives. Reports by the aggrieved reporter are calculated attempts to bring the event into disrepute. This isolated event is misrepresentation of the concert which otherwise was very peaceful and violence free.”

Foreign Affairs / Israel Withdraws From UN Agency Over Jerusalem by ossybluez(m): 8:52am On Dec 25, 2017
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that his country will withdraw from the UN cultural agency UNESCO.

Netanyahu had already announced in October that Israel would pull out of UNESCO following a decision by President Donald Trump to withdraw the U.S. from the agency for its alleged “anti-Israel bias.”

Netanyahu
A Foreign Ministry spokesman had said Saturday that a letter of withdrawal will be sent before the start of the new year.

“Over the weekend I instructed the Foreign Ministry to withdraw from UNESCO,” Netanyahu said at the start of his weekly cabinet meeting.

“I think that this is necessary in light of the biased, unilateral and absurd attitude of the organization towards us and also in the background of the U.S. strong stance in the UN, which we welcome,” he continued.

Israel has complained that a succession of UNESCO motions condemning its actions in Jerusalem did not take into account Jewish links to the city and the disputed holy site known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount.

Earlier in the year, the agency added the old town of Hebron in the West Bank, a pilgrimage site for Christians, Jews and Muslims, under its World Heritage Sites in Palestine, sparking outrage in Israel.

Netanyahu’s statement comes as the UN General Assembly last week overwhelmingly voted to rebuke Washington over its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

“Those who do not want a solution to the conflict are the Palestinians,” Netanyahu said, referring to a statement by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas that he would not work with the U.S. on any peace process.

A former Boko Haram Chief Intelligence Officer, CIO, Abdulkadir Abubakar, has warned the leader of the group, Abubakar Shekau, to stop using innocent girls who are being hypnotised as human bombs.
Mr. Abubakar, also known as Abu Muhammad, also warned other factional leaders of the group like Mamman Nur, Abbor Mainok, Abu Musad Albarnawi and Abbah Minok to repent from their deadly ways and embrace peace.
Mr. Abubakar was the CIO of the terror group and one of its top commanders, until his arrest in June by the military in Buni Yadi in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The Commander who spoke to PRNigeria in his cell in Maiduguri, regretted that a lot of innocent young girls were captured, tortured, hypnotised and used by Abubakar Shekau in the suicide bombing.
“I am calling on Abubakar Shekau, Mamman Nur, Abbor Minok and Abu Musad Albarnawi to lay down their arms and to stop the senseless killings.
“Shekau has continued to demonstrate his cruelty and atrocities against humanity. He had killed a lot of souls, destroyed homes and rendered people homeless.
“He continued to exercise God’s authority to himself by killing innocent souls at will without any justification. This was why all his commanders left him. He doesn’t have pity for the aged, women, children as well as young girls, who are mostly suffering and dying in his camp.
“His followers are raping and committing all sort of atrocities under his nose while he continued to show no concern. Many who dared to question his dastardly acts, were promptly eliminated by Shekau.
“Some of his commanders like Aliyu and our Chief Mechanic known as “Paper” were killed for begging Shekau to provide food to mothers and their children at the time our camp in Abiso ran out of food.

“When Shekau was told to help them, he said he did not come to Sambisa to feed the Children of “Handak” he said if 100,000 of them die every day, that’s none of his business.
“At some point women became beggars to feed their children in Sambisa, while at least 13 children get killed of malnutrition and other hardship meted on them by Shekau.
“This is the reason why Mamman Nur, Albarnawi, Man Chari, Abbor Minok and Abba Albarnawi including myself deserted him and form our own factional groups. Mamman Nur moved to the shores of Chad while Albarnawi and Abbah (Last born of Muhammad Yusuf) remained at the shores of Magumeri.
“All of us as at then were all hunting to kill Shekau just like the Nigerian military because of the atrocities he committed under our name. We had fought nine times with him and killed many of his men.
Boko Haram
“Shekau must know that all those women he is sending with Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs), in places of worships, market and schools are our sisters and mothers and they don’t deserve to die.
“He must know that one day he would be called and to account for all the atrocities he has committed in the name of Islam. There is no compulsion in religion. Indeed God has really allowed the truth to prevail over falsehood.
“There is no verse of the Holy Qur’an that permitted Muslims to kill anybody. God will punish even those who feel happy while we are killed not to talk of killing innocent souls. So you cannot kill anyone who doesn’t believe in your faith or practice.
“Arrogantly, Shekau declared a whole country and people living it as infidels and ordered that everyone living in that city and not Sambisa must be killed. Islam can never be synonymous to senseless killings.
“Shekau should remember that he was nobody but ordinary student. He remember that he had only two sets of cloths when we were in Maiduguri. I remember ever telling him that “Brother Shekau why can’t you buy more cloths to wear? And he told me that he was afraid of meeting God in the day of judgement.
“He should look at himself and ask himself if he has achieved from the senseless course. Despite all the looted wealth and power he had acquired, was he able to buy himself good health. He is now a cripple isn’t that a lesson for him to learn and understand that God is punishing you for the pain you inflicted on others.”
