Health7 Things Babies Do In The Womb That’ll Blow Your Mind … (must See) by Osu175(op): 11:47am On Sep 20, 2014
The things babies do in the womb that you never knew about…..:

1. They develop tastes for certain foods. Has pregnancy
given you insatiable cravings for Taco Bell? If so, expect
your kid to be a chalupa connoisseur himself. That’s
because the nutrients in the food you eat seep into your
amniotic fluid, which the fetus gulps down and can “taste”
by 20 weeks. And your tastes rub off: One study found that
mothers who regularly ate carrots gave birth to little bunny-
wannabe babies who love carrots more than babies whose
moms didn’t eat this vegetable much.

2. They react to stress. In one study at Durham and
Lancaster universities in England, the more anxiety moms
reported, the more often their fetuses used their left hands
to touch their face. This suggests that a mom’s emotions
might impact their movements in subtle and surprising
ways. It also suggests that moms really should try to relax.

3. They practice facial expressions. By observing 4D scans of
fetuses, scientists at Durham and Lancaster Universities
found that by 24 weeks, unborn babies could achieve “two
dimensional” facial expressions such as curling their mouth
in a smile. By 36 weeks, unborn babies could achieve more
complex facial expressions including “pain” though lowered
eyebrows, wrinkled nose, and stretched mouth.

4. They cry. Silently. Which makes us want to cry, too. In one
study that video recorded ultrasounds of fetuses during the
third trimester, startling the baby with a low-decibel noise
against the mother’s abdomen caused their fetuses to
display traditional crying behavior, such as opening their
mouths, depressing their tongues, and gasping irregularly.
Researchers even spotted that telltale quivering lower lip.

5. They recognize nursery rhymes. In one study conducted
at the University of Florida, researchers asked pregnant
women to read classic verses to their unborn babies twice a
day for several weeks during their third trimester. In
response, the fetal heart rate slowed when the rhymes were
read by mom, or even when read by strangers a few weeks
later. This suggests that the babies were thinking “Hey, I
don’t know who’s narrating, but it’s my favorite: Mother
Goose!”

6. They also recognize songs. In another study conducted at
the University of Helsinki, researchers played “Twinkle
Twinkle Little Star” over and over during the mom’s third
trimester. After birth, they played the song again. EEG
readings via electrodes on the infants’ heads showed
greater brain activity for infants who’d heard the song in
utero than for those who hadn’t. This suggests that they
could name that tune.

7. They anticipate touch. Researchers at the University of
Durham used 4D ultrasound scans to track the movements
of fetuses during the third trimester, and found that by the
nine-month mark, fetuses started opening their mouths
prior to touching this area. This suggests they’d finally put
two and two together — i.e., “Hey, hand headed toward
mouth for some quality thumb sucking! Open up!”

EducationTETFund Aids Each Varsity With N916m, Polytechnic, N661m by Osu175(op): 7:51am On Sep 17, 2014
Nigeria's Federal Government
announced the disbursement of N912
million to each university from the
Tertiary Education Trust Fund
(TETFund) for 2014.
The Minister of Education, Malam
Ibrahim Shekarau, announced this at
the two-day TETFund Annual Strategic
Planning Workshop in Abuja.
Shekarau said that each polytechnic
would receive N661 million, while
each college of education would get the
sum of N581 million.
According to Shekarau, it is a
remarkable increase compared with the
previous disbursements.

“TETFUND disburses fund realised
from two per cent education tax
collections to federal and state
universities, polytechnics and colleges
of education.
“Over the years, the quantum of funds
allocated to institutions has increased
considerably.
“This year, the amount for direct
allocation to the beneficiaries has
increased by 41 per cent for
universities, 49 per cent for
polytechnics and 48 per cent for
colleges of education compared to
2013.
“This year, each university is receiving
the sum of N912 million in normal
intervention, each polytechnic is
receiving the sum of N661 million
while each college of education is
receiving the sum of N581 million.’’
The minister said that the interventions
were supplements to normal annual
budgetary provisions by the federal and
state governments.
He warned that the intervention fund
must be properly prioritised and
applied to projects that directly add
value to teaching and learning; and to
post-graduate training for academic
staff as well as to research and
scholarly publications.
Earlier, Prof Suleiman Bogoro, the
Executive Secretary of TETFund, said
that the purpose of the workshop was
to review previous years’ interventions
in various institutions.
Bogoro said the workshop would
discuss the guidelines for the 2014
Intervention Allocation Programmes.
He said the workshop would also
deliberate on the focus and the
guidelines for the implementation of
the 2014 Intervention Programmes.

PoliticsMUTINY: Convicted Soldiers Have A Strong Case, They Can’t Be Killed – Falana by Osu175(op): 10:03pm On Sep 16, 2014
By Ezekiel Attah on September 16, 2014

Human Rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) has urged the
military authorities not to confirm the death sentence
passed on the 12 soldiers for mutiny and other
offences, rather to commute the death sentence passed
on the soldiers to imprisonment in the interest of
Justice.
The 12 soldiers are among 18 soldiers arraigned for
mutiny for firing shots at the General Officer
Commanding of 7th division of Nigerian Army, Major
General Ahmed Mohammed on May 14, 2014 in
Maiduguri. The convicts were found guilty of criminal
conspiracy, mutiny, attempt to commit murder,
insubordination to a particular order and false
accusation, according to report from The Nation
However, if the death sentence of the Maiduguri 12 is
confirmed by the Army Council, Falana advised the
convicted soldiers to take the case to the Court of
Appeal.
Falana remarked that the Court of Appeal is likely to
follow its decision in the case of Yussuf and 21 others
versus Nigerian Army (2003) 36 WRN 68 “wherein the
sentence of life imprisonment passed on the appellants
who had rioted at the Cairo Airport in Egypt was
quashed.
“It was the finding of the Court that the offense of
mutiny complained of by the respondent was instigated
by the officers who had diverted the medical
allowances which ought to have been paid to the
convicts while receiving medical treatment in Egypt”, he
stated.
The erudite lawyer argued that the facts and
circumstance of the mutinous act of the convicted
soldiers should be taken into consideration.
Before the incident the
soldiers at the Maimalari
cantonment had
complained of
insufficient ammunition,
food and
allowances. The visit of
the GOC was said to
have coincided with the
arrival of the corpses of
soldiers killed in an
ambush in Chibok on
the night of May 13, 2014. It was the tragic situation
which reportedly infuriated the soldiers.
Having investigated and confirmed the circumstances
which led to the mutiny in question the military
authorities removed the GOC.
Falana pointed out that while mutiny cannot be
condoned by the armed forces because it strikes at the
foundation of discipline in the military, he emphasised
that the 18 soldiers were erroneously charged under
section 52(1) of the Armed Forces Act Cap A20 Laws of
the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
In the circumstance, the 12 convicts should have been
charged under section 52(2) of the Armed Forces Act
which provides for life imprisonment.
He noted that the General Officer Commanding whose
car was shot at was not killed. He said this explained
why the soldiers were charged with attempted murder
which does not attract the death penalty.
The lawyer recalled that in the case of the Akure 27, the
convicted soldiers were equally charged with mutiny
but convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
He said the Army Council reduced the sentence of life
imprisonment to seven years and later pardoned the
convicts.
He recalled that the fact that the allowances of the
convicts who had served in Liberia were diverted by
some military officers was taken into cognizance by the
Army Council and informed the mitigation of their
sentence.

PoliticsAre We Really One Country? by Osu175(op): 9:34pm On Sep 03, 2014
Are we really one country by Femi Fani-Kayode

Boko Haram have taken over the town of Gwoza, killed
the Emir and declared the place an islamic state. They
have seceded from Nigeria and they are beheading
Christians and southerners and all moderate northern
muslims that do not share their views.
I wonder what would
have happened if it had
been a town in the
south-east that had
been taken over in this
way by a group of Igbo
nationalists and
Christian
fundamentalists. I
wonder what would
have happened if they
killed the local
traditional ruler and then started to kill every
northerner, every muslim and every moderate
Christian in that town that did not share their views.
I wonder what Nigeria would have done to them if it
was an Igbo town that declared secession in this way
and not a northern one. I wonder how our northern
brothers would have reacted to this and how they
would have felt if any southern terrorist group had as
it’s main objective the wiping out of islam and all
muslims in Nigeria and the establishment of a Christian
fundamentalist state in the whole of the south that is
governed by Christian canon law.
I wonder if our northern brothers would be as calm, as
forgiving and as patient as we in the south have been
about Boko Haram. The last time that a part of this
country attempted to secede, we slaughtered and
starved to death over two million Igbos in order to
keep Nigeria one. Yet, today, Gwoza has been taken
over by murderous secessionist forces and we act as if
it is no big deal.
The truth is that this is a nation of double standards
where southerners are subject to a different set of
conventions, laws, rules and regulations when
compared to northerners. Northerners can get away
with secession and establishing an islamic caliphate
whilst southerners dare not try to do the same sort of
thing.
This begs the question: is Nigeria really one country
and are we really one people. And even if we say it is
one country and we are one people, how much longer
can this remain so given what is going on in the north
today with Boko Haram?
Some northerners have said that if power does not
return to the north next year they will smash up
Nigeria and make the south pay dearly. They believe
that they own Nigeria and that they were born to rule.
How are we as
southerners supposed
to react to this? Are we
supposed to accept it
sheepishly and just bow
down and surrender?
Does a southerner from
the Niger Delta not have
a right to serve two
terms in office as
President of Nigeria?
Are southerners and Middle Belters not human beings.
Are they nothing but slaves to the core muslim north?
Are the issues that Ojukwu raised in 1967 not still
relevant today?
Surely, it is time for us to answer these difficult
questions even though we keep brushing these matters
under the carpet. It is time to either answer the
Nationality Question once and for all or begin to
prepare for the break up of this great country into two
or more pieces.

I heard she is only four years old, but looking at her chest one would mistake her for a full grown woman.. hormone or whatever you may choose to call it, there are certainly some
sort of scientific explanation for condition experienced by this young child.
Shari Nethersole is a physician at Children’s Hospital, Boston, and an instructor in Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. She explains that this problem is actually not uncommon in
young girls, (precocious puberty). When a small amount of breast development occurs without the rest of puberty progressing, it is called premature thelarche (Thelarche is the medical term for the onset of breast development). This typically happens in toddlers, usually by age two, though it can occur in preschool-aged children as well. It can occur on just one or both sides.

HealthUniversity Of Ibadan To Produce Ebola Vaccines by Osu175(op): 10:46pm On Aug 22, 2014
Professor Isaac Adewole, the Vice chancellor, University
of Ibadan, Ibadan, has hinted that the institution has
set up a Committee on Ebola Prevention and
Preparedness, to try and produce Ebola vaccine.
Nigerian Tribune reports that the Vice chancellor, while
speaking at a town hall meeting in Ibadan, further revealed
that the institution’s virology laboratory would be expanded
and make sure it produce a vaccine that could be used to
prevent Ebola.
Professor Adewole said the university had concluded plans
to spearhead Ebola vaccine production, and advised
residents to dispel their fears as they would be adequately
equipped with necessary information about the virus.
He urged the federal government to investigate the
allegation that the late Patrick Sawyer was paid to import the
virus to Nigeria, and cautioned people against handshake.
He also advised the public to avoid sick people as Ebola
virus spreads quickly through body fluids of infected
persons.
Speaking also at the town hall meeting, Professor David
Olaleye, a virologist and head, UI Ebola Viral Disease
Prevention and Preparedness Committee, reiterated the
need for good hygiene, and pleaded with that people to
avoid contact with dead animals.
Meanwhile, it is not yet known if the outcome of their
research would be widely accepted as it would be recalled
that on August 19, 2014, one Dr. Rima Laibow, Managing
Director of US-based company Natural Solutions Foundation
claimed that Nano Silver has been deployed by her team of
scientists during treatment of Ebola patients in Africa before
the current epidemic outbreak, but surprisingly on August
21, 2014, the same company confirmed that the said drug
was not a cure for the deadly disease.
