Osumenyi, Et Tu?

Growing up, I thought my adulthood would mimic my parents’ in every way and include weekly drives back to Osumenyi, our ancestral home. The first time I took my children there, we sat on the balcony of my parents’ home and ate the sweetest guavas ever. Osumenyi was where I raced my cousin, Stanley on our Raleigh Choppers. It was where I learned to play ping-pong. It was where my younger sister, BG and I made friends we only saw once or twice a year when their families and ours returned home for Christmas or Afia olu. When we got older, my brother, Okey, Stanley, BG and I would take drives to neighbouring towns to isi ewu joints. Once, we were served an isi ewu that was missing both eyes. The punctilious Stanley asked the owner of the joint, a broad-faced woman- if she’d perchance served us a blind goat or if she’d simply forgotten to include the eyes. When my parents-in-law came for my Igba Nkwu , on my father-in-law’s first trip to Nigeria, they loved it so much, they spoke about it for years. I have so many memories, funny and happy ones of Osumenyi , of spending time there and I’d hoped to make more with my children, but I haven’t been back in a while.

I haven’t been back to Osumenyi for many reasons but one of them is because we know that the south-east as a whole is facing serious security challenges. Abductions for ransom, and more recently, bandits and the faceless, ubiquitous Unknown Gun Men aka UGM committing their crimes apparently with no fear of reprisals. Whenever I shared my fears, foisted on me by the news of these crimes in other parts of the SE, someone – a cousin mostly- reminds me that “Mba nu. Osumenyi isn’t that bad.” Whatever crimes happen there- including the burning of a police station a couple of years ago- are anomalies. “Osu is safe.” My cousin returned from the States for her wine carrying and everything went well. Inspired by that, we’ve talked recently of a family reunion party there. I imagined returning with my boys and my husband, and creating new Osumenyi memories. I guess I so desperately needed to believe that my beloved town, the home I love has been miraculously spared the madness infesting, not just the south-east, but the entire nation. I wanted to believe that whatever changes have occurred in Osumenyi have only been good ones, progressive ones: the tarred road-constant electricity- and -pipe borne water variety of change. I wanted to believe that my town was still the safe, warm womb of my young(er) days. Alas, last week shattered my heart and presented that illusion for what it was.

Last week, ‘UGM’ struck at a beer parlour and killed five people including the owner of the bar. One of the other victims was a business man back home for a funeral from his base in Sokoto. When, as young adults, we went out exploring isi ewu joints between Osumenyi and Nnewi, joking about blind goats and staying out long enough with a car ‘borrowed’ from our parents to get into trouble with them, we never thought that we were in any danger. Not from gun men, not from kidnappers. I envy my younger self the freedom and safety of those days, and I am saddened that things have fallen so much apart that for our children, that level of freedom and safety in the SE is the stuff of folktales. It brings me to tears.

But tears will not change things. If it would, I’d devote the rest of my natural life to shedding them for change. These attacks are happening everywhere. In Anambra State alone, the same day as the Osumenyi attack, there was another one with fatalities by these domestic terrorists in Agulu. If we are not safe where the umbilical cords of our ancestors are buried, where can we be safe? Governor Soludo has his work cut out for him, and I wish him the wisdom and resources to tackle this issue and uproot it. ‘Unknown Gun Men’ are not ghosts. They are not air. To whom are they unknown? They can be unmasked and apprehended, surely. Adapting and paraphrasing Ursula Le Guin’s quote on Freedom, let me remind our leaders that governing is a heavy load, a great burden for one to undertake. It is not easy. It is not a gift given, but a choice made, and the choice involves making difficult and bold decisions. We need to sanitize our state, and seize it from these oso chi egbu folks who believe that all life is theirs to take as they see fit.

We want better for Nigeria, and we want leaders dedicated to getting us that. We demand that. On that note, let me ask oo, una don get una PVCs?

Agwuakpu is a female deity located in Umuomam village,Osumenyi-Nnewi South LGA, Anambra state. It serves as a protection to Umuomam people with their Nwadialas during the civil war.A tower was erected with mud sand to this regards where children from this village were kept inside it for protection.There's no form of harm that was melted on these children and all the umuomam men that went for civil war came back safe because they are under the protection of Agwuakpu.
A competitive & Prestigious Dance "Egwuatu" won laurels for Ndi Umuomam in every Competitive/challenging dance with different communities within and outside Anambra state these are miracluos deeds of Agwuakpu in the olden days.
Speaking with her New Chief Priest Hon.Onyeka Onukwuzie; its annual New yam festival take place every 16th Sept.This is a day men from all walks of life will be in attendance. Umuomam people together with their Nwadialas with Osumenyi indigenes gathered to celebrate this day.
He noted that this year's Own is remarkable and further said that on mid January that he travelled miles away from the community to buy a yam that will be used for farming from another community, that when he comes back that he took it to Agwuakpu and challenge her to prove to people most especially Ndi Osumenyi through that yam that what she is doing is for Good. During Harvesting that she perfected it.

May 25, 2019,In a distinctive undertaking to ameliorate the sectoral deficiencies of education and human capital development in Nigeria, the Government of the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem (OSJ) - Knights of Malta is strategically partnering with the Government of Bauchi State, Federal Republic of Nigeria within an inclusive joint assistance framework.

FIVE communities in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State recently witnessed a spectacle.It was a beauty pageant organises by a non-governmental organisation;ELEPHANT TOWN ENTERTAINMENT, to bring unity and love to the people of the area.
The event,which was witness by a large crowd,had in attendance the First Executive Governor of Anambra State,DR CHUKWUEMEKA EZEIFE(OKWADIKE).
The five communities that participated at the event were Akwaihedi,Ebenator, Ezinifite, Osumenyi and Utuh. The quintet makes up MBANESE in Nnewi South Local Government Area.
Chief Executive Officer of Elephant Town Entertainment, MR.JOVITA MELOLO-MELATA JNR.OGBOLOAGHA,said the beauty pageant was intended to produce MISS/ADA MBANESE from the FIVE communities that featured in the inaugural contest.
DAILY SUN gathered that,as part of the pre-pageant activities, the participants were camped at Odiri Social Club of Nigeria,Osumenyi.Thereafter,They and the sponsors were taken on a tour of notable and exciting locations within the communities in Mbanese clan.
Some of the interesting places they visited included:Ulasi River Ezinifite which serves as a natural boundary between Anambra and Imo state,and Aboudughudu,the great palm wine tappers statue.They also visited Ebenator Lake,Ofala River,Ebenator and Utuh gully erosion site.
The participants thereafter paid a courtesy visit to former Ebenator Town Union President,Mr.Esomonu who gave them lectures on the clan and also spoke on other issues about the area.
In his Remarks,Dr Ezeife ,who was the Special Guest of Honour,Commended the Organizers for putting together the Showpiece,adding that they needed to be emulated and encouraged.He said that the initiative would help to promote the cultural heritage of the communities and would serve as a binding factor for sustainable peace and unity among rural and urban dwellers from the area.The pageant,he said was one of the ways of keeping the youths busy,thus setting their minds to thinking about positive and progressive ventures.

Dr.Ezeife advised Ndigbo to always hold fast to their culture and resist any attempt to be over -influenced by Western culture.He also called on them to always promote their cultural heritage at family,community and even Diaspora Levels at all times.
Chairman on the Occasion, who was the immediate past Chairman of Nnewi South Transition Committee, Mr.Felix Odimegwu,In his address ,commended the Organizers of the beauty pageant ,noting that the effort had succeeded in bringing youths,especially young women,together in healthy competition. He commended MELOLO-MELATA JNR.for doing a wonderful job in bringing th youths together for them to exhibit their competitive prowess.
One of the Keynote Speakers was DR.ISAAC E.UFONDU,an author and publisher.
Melata Jnr.,in brief address, said the entertainment outfit was a Lagos based company established in 2009 with speciality in event promotion and training of artistes of all categories.
He said that the MISS/ADA MBANESE BEAUTY PAGEANT was meant to enhance self a empowerment among girls and to enable the youths to conduct themselves along the lines of acceptable social norms.He predicted that the programme would help them to make a positive impacts on the lives of upcoming youths through their ambassadorial responsibilities, pet projects and literacy campaign efforts.
He said:Queen Chinyere Maria Okparauzoma from Ezinifite,who is a final year student of University of Calabar,emerged winner of MISS ADA MBANESE 2018,while miss Rebecca Ikpo from Ezinifite, also a final year student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University-Awka,emerged as the first runner-up.
In that order, Miss Dara Amara from Akwaihedi, a graduate of computer Science from Nnamdi Azikiwe University,Awka,emerged as the second runner-up.Miss Cynthia Ezike,from Utuh,who was the youngest among the contestants,became Miss/Ada Mbanese Model.
