Just Fry Akara, The Cost of Out-of-Touch Leadership. By Comrade Peter Nwokolo Nigerian women do not need much money to start the business of frying akara, corn and kwuli-kwuli. Those were the words of Senator Remi Tinubu, wife of the President. And with that one sentence, millions of Nigerian women heard exactly how little their struggle is understood by the very people who claim to serve them. The backlash was immediate and it was right. Because frying akara is not “just” frying akara. It is waking up at 4am. It is buying beans at a market where prices have tripled. It is gas or firewood or charcoal that eats half your profit. It is oil that costs more than many earn in a day. It is rent for a shop, levies from task forces and fear of security agencies seizing your goods. It is hunger while you fry food for others. To reduce that to “doesn’t need much money” is disdain dressed as advice. This is the pattern, not an accident. Our political class has made a habit of prescribing survival to people they have impoverished. When fuel goes up, they ask us to trek, when food is unaffordable, they say “farm, when businesses collapse, they say “hustle harder and when women cry out, they say “fry akara.” It indeed, reveals a deeper problem: a government that measures the lives of citizens in street-food portions while it budgets in billions for itself and its cronies. The math doesn’t add up. Ask any woman on the street in Ekiti, Onitsha, Kano or Port Harcourt what it takes to start today. Beans. Pepper. Onions. Oil. Gas. Utensils, a table, protection money and Transport. The capital required now is not “little.” The margin is thinner. The risk is higher and the State, instead of easing that burden, adds taxes, policy shocks and insecurity. What citizens hear in “just fry akara” is that your poverty is your problem, Your hunger is your hustle and your economy is not our concern. That is not leadership. Leadership is lowering the cost of food, fuel and business. It is credit that is accessible, markets that are safe and policies that don’t punish the petty trader to protect the powerful. Nigerian women are already resilient. They do not need lectures on frying. They need a government that respects their labour enough to make it viable. Until our leaders stop trivializing suffering and start accounting for it, every “akara speech” will be remembered for what it really is: proof of the distance between Aso Villa and the average Nigerian’s kitchen. Nigeria deserves leaders who count our costs, not dismiss them. This is what I saw somewhere and I want to share it here in the heat of the ongoing Akara recommended business era!

The hardship is real! They see him as their common enemy; that's the narrative they've been fed. No amount of rhetoric can change that perception in those areas. When elections come, they see it as an opportunity to express their frustrations and anger at the polls. |

Please, I want to ask an honest question with no political undertone. For those who have witnessed how elections are conducted in other countries, whether in Africa (though I doubt it is much different from Nigeria), do European or American governments induce citizens with handouts to vote for their parties or candidates? I believe that if the government provides the basic necessities of life, no Nigerian would need to beg for anything. We are naturally hardworking people. |
How true is this?

Ironfaceman:That's geopolitics at work.It shows strength and political savvy on President Trump's part.In international politics, there are no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests. Leaders are judged by how well they protect and advance those interests. |
