My brother, don’t stress too much about the lack of strategic foresight among the Igbo people. While the Igbo are undeniably blessed with industriousness, they often lack the strategic acumen needed to safeguard wealth and ensure its continuity across generations. This has always been our greatest weakness.

This shortcoming didn’t start today. For example, General Ironsi was advised against relying on northerners for his personal security and placing them in sensitive command positions. Awka – Anambra State has recorded a remarkable increase in its monthly Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), rising from ₦2.2 billion to ₦5.2 billion within the past year—a growth of over 100%.


This was disclosed by Amara Oyeka, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on IGR, during the presentation and validation of research conducted across 21 major markets in the state’s three senatorial zones.



The research is part of the Tax for Service Project, implemented by the Tax Justice and Governance Platform (TJ&GP) in collaboration with the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), with support from Oxfam Nigeria.

Despite the growth, Oyeka noted significant obstacles in achieving this result. Many affluent citizens in the state evade taxes, while a substantial portion of collected revenue—estimated at over 50%—is diverted into private hands.

“We have a situation where revenue collectors are richer than the government,” Oyeka revealed. “Most of those tarnishing the government’s image are not even employed by us. While we work harder than other states, the system is plagued by numerous leakages. We are determined to address these issues.”

He emphasized the need for collaboration among stakeholders to sanitize the system and ensure that Anambra receives its rightful revenue share. “The higher the revenue, the greater the citizens’ power to demand public goods,” he added.

Ugochi Ehiahuruike, Executive Director of the Social and Integral Development Centre (SIDEC), which hosts the Tax Justice and Governance Platform in Anambra, highlighted the project’s goals.

“The Tax for Service Project is designed to bridge the gap between taxpayers and service providers, fostering transparency, accountability, and trust in governance,” she explained. “This research provides a foundation for strategic interventions to improve tax compliance and public service outcomes.”

Dr. Greg Ezeilo, Chairman of the Anambra State Board of Internal Revenue Service (AiRS), represented by the Director of Taxes, Herbert Ofomata, lamented the disparity between the state’s economic potential and its revenue profile.


“The financial worth of markets in Anambra is immense, yet government revenue does not reflect this reality,” he said. “Markets are the oil wells of this state. From Onitsha to Awka, markets dominate, and we must leverage this resource to fund public services effectively.”

The state’s commitment to reforming its revenue collection system, coupled with partnerships with civil society and stakeholders, signals a determined effort to enhance transparency and accountability while maximizing Anambra’s economic potential.

I write to you as a concerned citizen, deeply appreciative of Nigeria's rich history and the pivotal figures who have shaped our nation's democratic journey. In this regard, I humbly propose the renaming of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), to honour the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, GCFR.

Chief Abiola, born on August 24, 1937, in Abeokuta, was a distinguished businessman, philanthropist, and politician whose life was marked by an unwavering commitment to democracy and social justice. His victory in the June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria's freest and fairest, was a testament to his broad-based support across ethnic and religious lines. Despite the annulment of the election results and his subsequent incarceration, Chief Abiola remained steadfast in his pursuit of democratic ideals until his untimely death on July 7, 1998. His enduring legacy was further recognized when he was posthumously awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR) in 2018 by Former President Muhammadu Buhari, and June 12 was declared Nigeria's Democracy Day in his honour.

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, established in 1960, stands as a beacon of Academic excellence and National unity. Founded by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, it was the first indigenous University in Nigeria, embodying the vision of a nation capable of charting its own educational and developmental course. The university's motto, "To Restore the Dignity of Man," resonates profoundly with Chief Abiola's lifelong dedication to human rights, democracy, and the upliftment of the Nigerian people.

Renaming UNN after Chief Abiola would serve multiple purposes:

1. National Unity: It would symbolize the bridging of regional and ethnic divides, reflecting Chief Abiola's pan-Nigerian appeal and the university's national character.

2. Honoring Democratic Sacrifice: This act would immortalize Chief Abiola's contributions to Nigeria's democratic evolution, inspiring future generations to value and uphold democratic principles.

3. Educational Inspiration: Aligning the university with Chief Abiola's legacy would motivate students and faculty to emulate his virtues of resilience, philanthropy, and commitment to societal betterment.

The next morning, I canceled all my appointments as I was still unwell. My in-law explained that my condition was likely caused by stress and elevated blood pressure. Jokingly, I asked her, "How can a young man like me have high BP? What am I even thinking about?"

She explained that it’s not just about overthinking—stress, poor sleep, sugar levels, and an unhealthy lifestyle could all be contributing factors. My wife has always urged me to prioritize health checks, but I often dismissed them as unnecessary. After this experience, I don’t need any reminders. My "macho man" attitude almost turned me into a shadow of myself in the blink of an eye.

Although I don’t consider my work stressful, I underestimated the impact of sleepless nights spent working, browsing, and surfing the net. Now, I understand how dangerous that habit is to my health, and I’m determined to make changes moving forward.

If I had fallen during that dizzy spell, this story might not have been written. Now I truly understand why people collapse and suffer strokes. This could have been my fate, but I thank God for sparing me.

I’m grateful to my in-law and my wife for their quick actions. With medication and proper rest, I’m recovering, though not fully yet. God has truly been merciful, allowing me to continue working and providing for my family.

This experience taught me a valuable lesson: Always prioritize regular medical checkups. Especially for those of us in demanding jobs—like journalists—who often neglect our health in the hustle of chasing stories. I had no symptoms, not even a headache, yet this happened to me. It’s a stark reminder that prevention is indeed better than cure.

May God continue to guide and protect us all as we strive to care for our families.

The State of States report obtained from the BudgIT website shows that Lagos(2), Ogun(3), and Anambra(4) States follow Rivers State which is No1.

These are the only states that can cover expenses through internally generated revenue without dependence on FACC allocation.
