PORT HARCOURT BELONGS TO THE IGBOS
The then West African Court of Appeal (WACA) judgement in the case between IKWERRE VS. OKRIKA in 1958 bordering on the status of Port Harcourt settled it.
WACA decided that Port Harcourt belongs to the Igbos. There was no appeal till date.
When Elechi Amadi was confronted with the WACA judgement by Ohaneze Ndi Igbo Counsel, he affirmed it and it was admitted in evidence.
His only remark was that "the Ikwerre people involved their wealthy Igbo brothers in litigation, fought for Port Harcourt under the shadow of their rich brothers against Okrika people and consequently, the court so ruled.
When asked whether he appealed against that judgement, he said NO.
That Port Harcourt is an Igbo city was a judgement of a superior court that has not been vacated.
The original inhabitants of Obigbo were mostly from Ngwa, Arochukwu and Owerri.
Legally, traditionally and Originally Igweocha or Iguacha(Portharcourt) is Igbo land.

Nigerian states have collectively spent about N139.92 billion on servicing external debt in the first half of 2024.

This is according to an analysis of Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The amount spent is an increase of 122% from the N63.06 billion spent in the same period last year.


According to the data, states have moved from spending around N9 billion monthly in 2023 to over N20 billion this year, which is more than double the debt service cost likely due to the naira devaluation.

Below are the top 10 Nigerian states with the highest external debt service costs in the first six months of 2024:

Osun State
Osun State, located in Nigeria’s southwest, is culturally known for the Osun-Osogbo Festival. In 2024, Osun recorded N3.4 billion in external debt service costs, up from N1.57 billion in 2023. This represents an increase of N1.83 billion or about 116%.

Adamawa State
In northeastern Nigeria, Adamawa is recognized for agriculture, especially cattle farming. The state’s external debt service cost increased by N1.6 billion, from N1.98 billion in 2023 to N3.57 billion in 2024, marking an 80.7% rise.

Ogun State
Ogun, an industrial hub in southwest Nigeria, experienced a significant increase in external debt servicing, from N1.57 billion in 2023 to N4.29 billion in 2024, reflecting an increase of 172.5% or N2.72 billion.

Rivers State
Rivers State, situated in the oil-rich Niger Delta, is known for being one of Nigeria’s wealthiest states due to its oil production. In 2024, the state’s external debt service costs rose to N4.6 billion, up from N1.76 billion in 2023, an increase of N2.85 billion or 161.9%.

Edo State
Edo State, with its rich historical legacy as the home of the ancient Benin Kingdom, saw its external debt servicing costs rise from N2.4 billion in 2023 to N5.9 billion in 2024. This is a jump of N3.49 billion or 144.8%.

Bauchi State
Known for its vast agricultural and mineral resources, Bauchi State witnessed an increase in debt service payments, rising from N3.28 billion in 2023 to N6.33 billion in 2024. This represents a N3.05 billion increase or 92.8%.

Oyo State
Oyo, one of the key southwestern states with a rich history and a strong agricultural base, experienced an external debt service rise of N3.75 billion from N2.61 billion in 2023 to N6.36 billion in 2024, marking a 143.7% increase.

Cross River State
Cross River, famed for its beautiful landscapes and thriving tourism industry, saw a dramatic increase in external debt servicing from N2.21 billion in 2023 to N7.87 billion in 2024. The N5.66 billion increase represents a 255.9% rise.

Kaduna State
Kaduna, a strategic economic and political hub in northwest Nigeria, recorded a N13.2 billion increase in debt service costs, jumping from N9.89 billion in 2023 to N23.08 billion in 2024. This represents a 133.4% rise in external debt obligations.

Lagos State
Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, saw its external debt servicing rise significantly, from N16.88 billion in 2023 to N32.44 billion in 2024, an increase of N15.56 billion or 92.2%. This state is also the most indebted in Nigeria.

I ventured into agriculture many years ago to create jobs, create wealth and food security so iykbethany farms is a project that is very important to me, but the journey hasn't been easy at all. There have been trials and errors along the way and I have been documenting everything so others can learn from the process, my mistakes and struggles.

I already have other farms for banana, plantains, oil palm and pineapples but one other venture that really caught my eye was greenhouse farming due to its immense potential to improve crop yields and maximize the use of limited land.

The Decision to Venture into Greenhouse Farming
The idea to invest in greenhouse farming came from my observation of Nigeria's agricultural sector.
Agriculture remains a critical part of our economy, yet many farmers still rely on traditional open-field farming, which is vulnerable to weather fluctuations, pest infestations, and inconsistent crop yields. With greenhouse farming, I saw an opportunity to leverage controlled environments to optimize crop growth, especially for high-value crops like habanero peppers.

Initial Setup and Consultation
The first year I ventured into agriculture, I went into Plantain and cassava farming without consulting any professional so the project failed woefully. So these days I do a lot of research and I consult widely. Since greenhouse farming was a new venture for me, I knew that consulting an expert was critical to ensuring the project's success. So I turned to a greenhouse expert I met on Nairaland. After several discussions, I hired him to oversee the construction of the greenhouses and other necessary infrastructure on the farm.

The project plan included:
Setting up two greenhouses: One dedicated to habanero peppers (Habanero F1) and the other for bell peppers (Hercules F1 red and Abbey F1 yellow).

Constructing a water tank stand: This would support two large water tanks that were crucial for the irrigation system.
However, it wasn’t long before we encountered a significant setback.

Unfortunately, the tank stand collapsed on the very day we filled the tanks with water. It turned out that the contractor used inferior materials, specifically low-quality metal, for the structure. As a result, the tank stand could not support the weight of the filled tanks, leading to its collapse.

Damage and Financial Losses
When the tank stand collapsed, the two water tanks were severely damaged, leaving them unusable. This resulted in unexpected financial losses, as I had to buy two new water tanks.

Moreover, the entire tank stand had to be reconstructed from scratch but this time I used manual labour and I decided to use blocks and cement. 

The total damage and reconstruction costs included:
The cost of buying two new water tanks.
The expense of reconstructing the tank stand with stronger, more reliable materials—this time, I opted for a tank stand made from concrete blocks and cement instead of metal.

Lessons Learned from the Setback
While the setback with the water tank stand was a major hurdle, it also taught me several valuable lessons about managing a greenhouse farming project. As an entrepreneur, it’s essential to not only focus on the potential profits but also to be mindful of the process, quality of materials, and the people involved in the project. Also, I have found out that water tank stands made of block and cement are stronger than those made of metals. And it is cheaper as well. 

After completing the greenhouse construction, I decided to hire a farm manager/agronomist to help oversee the operations. I will never repeat the mistakes I made years ago when I planted cassava and other crops without proper supervision. So I found someone from UNIPORT who had the knowledge and skills I was looking for. Since he’s still a student at Uniport, he requested free furnished accommodation on the farm, along with cooking utensils, to make it convenient for him to manage the farm while continuing his studies.  

This is a pilot project so I am still learning and documenting the whole process. 

Phase 1: Seed Germination and Nursery
- Raised 1,000 seeds each of red and yellow bell peppers and habanero peppers- Germination occurred after 7 days- Nursery duration: 28 days before transplanting

Phase 2: Farm Preparation
- Cleared the farm
- Created ridges
- Installed irrigation system
- Opened holes for planting
- Applied manure and NPK 15.15.15 fertilizers

Phase 3: Transplanting and Greenhouse Setup
- Transplanted seedlings into two greenhouses:   
- Habanero F1   
- Bell Pepper (Hercules F1 red and Abbey F1 yellow)
- Set up:   
- Binding wire (upper and lower lines)   
- Staking rope

Feeding Pattern
- Week 1: Plain water
- Week 2: Nitrogen application
- Week 3: Calcium nitrate application
- Week 4: Potassium nitrate application

Conclusion
Greenhouses are a valuable tool for improving agricultural productivity in Nigeria, especially for crops like habanero peppers and bell peppers. By providing a controlled environment, greenhouses help farmers overcome the challenges of traditional farming, such as unpredictable weather and pests. The structured approach to farming, from seed germination to transplanting and feeding, ensures high yields and quality produce.

Most Nigerians do not know that the reason foodstuffs are expensive is because of insecurity in the North. Northern Nigeria is our food basket but sadly bandits and terrorists are attacking farmers on a daily basis. In some Northern states, farmers cannot access their farms without paying hefty ramson to bandits and there is no guarantee you will come back alive even after paying the ransom.
If the government can tackle insecurity, food prices will drop dramatically.

Lifestyle plays a role to some extent. If you drive you'd know that driving at night can be dangerous especially if the street lights aren't functional combined with no road reflectors.

People also tend to overspeed since the road may seem clear. Alcohol intoxication can also play a role.

In the wee hours on Monday August 19, 2024 at about 3:am, a white coloured GLK 350-4 Matic Benz, was involved in a fatal accident that left two ladies dead, two other girls injured and a man – the driver critically injured.

The incident, which occurred at Mobil by MCC junction, Calabar Municipality Local Government Area of Cross River State, had two ladies – Bella and Wofai die on the spot while Peace, Amaka and the man whose name is not gotten yet at the time of this report, are all hospitalized.

Digging Deep

The victims are Wofai, Bella, Peace and Amaka and yet-to-be named driver.

Bella and Wofai died on the spot. Amaka and Peace are in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).

While Amaka is still in coma, Peace sustained a high degree of injuries – broken leg, broken hand and face badly injured. However, she can talk and remember things.
The driver who dislocated his leg is also hospitalized and currently on bandages. Though he is not badly injured, he is currently undergoing X-ray in the hospital.

Finding

News Direct gathered that the driver is Wofai’s boyfriend. She sat in the front seat with her boyfriend during the shuttle.

Bella, Wofai, Peace and Amaka all live in the same apartment at N0: 15c Ikot Uduak off Timber Market, Calabar.

Wofai, Bella and Amaka are all students of University of Calabar (UNICAL). Wofai just signed out a few days ago from the varsity.

Peace is a student in the school of Nursing, Calabar.

As early reported, they were returning from a birthday party but a deeper finding reveals that they were returning from a club party located at Atekong and headed to a hotel at Mobil axis.

There were about five of them from the same house that were set to embark on the party but one – Berry was left behind because others dressed before her and couldn’t wait for her.

There are about six ladies in the same apartment. While Wofai, Bella, Peace and Amaka went for the party and Berry left behind, Mary went to meet her boyfriend.

News Direct further gathered that the four victims all hail from Yakurr LGA.

The white coloured GLK 350-4 Matic Benz is just a few months old.
