Education / Innovation, Strong Will Key To Effective Administration Of Justice - Lasu Vc by PapateeOfLife(m): 8:49pm On Apr 14, 2020
INNOVATION, STRONG WILL, DISCIPLINE KEY TO EFFECTIVE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE IN NIGERIA- LASU VC, PROF. FAGBOHUN, SAN

The Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University, Professor Olanrewaju Adigun Fagbohun, SAN, NPOM has listed strong will, discipline and innovation as critical to effective Administration of Justice System in Nigeria, post Covid-19 pandemic.

Prof. Fagbohun, SAN, was the Guest Speaker at the 2020 Knowledge Sharing Series, a virtual Lecture organized by the LASU LAW Alumni Graduate Class of 2008.

Speaking on the theme: "The Impact of COVID-19 on the Administration of Justice in Nigeria: What does the Future Hold?", the learned silk decried the suspension of court sitting in the country pursuant to the directive of the CJN as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, without clear guidelines and directives that will ensure that the wheel of justice does not grind to a halt.

Drawing from examples of global best practices as has come to the fore in jurisdictions such as Dubai, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Kenya and Ghana, Prof Fagbohun identified four commendable global justice system responses : 1) suspension of in-person proceedings to safeguard people's health ; 2) implementation of technology tools to continue proceedings in urgent or necessary situations; 3) keeping track of proceedings that are daily being postponed; and 4) pro-active thinking on such issues like effect of statute of limitation and forfeiture as may arise post COVID -19.

He reminded the over 100 participants that the Lagos State Judiciary started well on the path technology. Somewhere along the line, the challenge of continuity of policies clearly stagnated innovation. There is also the need for an audit of processes and operations to know whether the different activities are on track.

"In the Lagos State Judiciary, online listing of cases, Case Management System, E- filing system, use of verbatim recorder among others were already in use for quite some time.

He concluded that " For as long as Nigeria continues on the same path as is currently, administration of justice will continue to fail on deliverables.

As things currently stand, post-COVID-19 in terms of civil/criminal cases already affected leave no room for optimism." Deliberate pro-active strategies must be put in place to change the paradigm.

He noted that COVID-19 is a wake-up call for Nigeria urging the Judiciary ( lawyers and judicial officers) to fully go digital.

"The Judiciary in Nigeria must fully go digital. It is not rocket science and enough of excuses. Let us have robust and open internet access in all courts. There are existing templates that will guide the digitisation of court processes.

The learned silk also took a swipe at legal practitioners and judicial officers who have turned our courts to theatre of repression and injustice. In his words, "For as long as we tolerate indiscipline, Nigeria's Judiciary will continue to wallow in failure. We must advance the highest standard of conduct among lawyers and judges".

Politics / Hon. Sola Giwa Celebrates His 43rd Birthday With Pupils Of Lagos Island by PapateeOfLife(m): 9:33pm On Jun 15, 2016
The lawmaker representing Lagos Island Constituency II stunned people by his yet unpredictable act by celebrating his birthday with pupils of primary schools in Holy Cross Catholic Primary School at Lagos Island.

It will be recalled that the amiable assemblyman in his early forties celebrated his last birthday on this day in June 2015 few days after the inauguration of the 8th assembly with patients of Massey Street Children hospital where he shared incentives with patients in their wards and also adopted a ward. He went further to renovate the Bathroom and Toilet of the hospital.

The good people of Lagos Island II have attested to his pedigree and the reading session with pupils of primary schools really didn’t come as a surprise.

Hon. Sola Giwa reiterated the need for a good reading culture amongst pupils while delivering action words. It was an interactive session that saw pupils inquire into the secret of success that had the honourable responded by saying the secret of success is embedded in books. Together with the pupils, the honourable neologized “Read More, Write More” as a take-away verse to acquaint the pupils with the bane of the discourse.

The pupils felicitated with Hon. Sola Giwa by joining him in cutting his birthday cake and they took turns at dishing out their good wishes on his birthday.

Hon. Sola Giwa donated books to the library of the host school in commiseration of his birthday.

Politics / Hon. Sola Giwa's #iampurple Independence Day Celebrations Goodwill Message by PapateeOfLife(m): 2:00pm On Oct 01, 2015
Hon. Sola Giwa's #IamPurple Independence Day Celebrations Goodwill Message To Nigerians
Hon. Sola Giwa a member of Lagos State House of Assembly who represents Lagos Island Constituency II and the progenitor of #IamPurple movement enjoins all Nigerians be united, steadfast and stand firm in our resolve to rid the country of corruption and other vices which threatens the existence of our motherland and great country - Nigeria.

Please find below a full text of his speech.

Oct 1, 2015 - Dear Lagosians, today, the 1st of October 2015, we are once again celebrating the anniversary of our independence from British colonial rule.

I address you today as we celebrate our 55th independence anniversary with gratitude to God and full appreciation of the resilience, patriotism, and commitment of the Nigerian people. Over the years, our country has been through a lot of contradictions, challenges, conflicts, and temptations. We have seen trust betrayed and opportunities mortgaged. We have seen hopes dashed and steady steps to progress compromised.

What has been good and appreciated by all persons of goodwill is that we have emerged from all these tribulations stronger, more united, more focused, and more committed to repositioning our country for peace, stability, security, growth, sustainable development and democracy. More importantly, in spite of the various challenges that we have faced, the sanctity of the Nigerian state has remained intact and strong. We have steadily and collectively re dedicated ourselves to the unity and progress of Nigeria.

The burning desire to build a nation where no one is oppressed and where opportunities abound for our people to reach the highest points of their creative and productive abilities has remained as strong as ever.

We have collectively committed to reform to make our today better than our yesterday and our tomorrow even more comfortable for our
children and ourselves. We have challenged opportunistic tendencies, corruption, mismanagement and bad leadership. We have also taken available opportunities to discuss the problems and options for progress in our country just as we have resolved to overcome conflicts and divisions within and between our communities. What these have done for us is that we are collectively building a better and stronger country.

Today, we have zero tolerance for waste, corruption and insolence. This is the only way to lay the foundation for a
new Nigeria as a country with a new image, focus, determination, values and purpose.

Nigeria is not yet where she should be in terms of development but
what we are sure of is the road map is there and clear.
Let me enjoin all Nigerians to look at the positive side and learn to
think positive, long-term, to eschew bitterness and negative thinking. We should join hands to move away from those attitudes that
got us nowhere, compromised our collective dignity and integrity, and subverted our march towards growth, development and democracy in the past.
We owe it to history and to the nation to defend, protect our democratic process.

October 1 as a day ought to be seen as a day to rekindle Patriotism, Freedom, Peace and Love. This is the spirit which we must demonstrate at all times as we face up to our challenges as a nation: one people, united by a common resolve, in the pursuit of one common national interest.

As we look forward to another year in our national life, I am more than confident that our tomorrow will be better than our yesterday and today. Nigeria has got the human and material resources to excel and we shall lead on our set course.
Fellow countrymen, brothers and sisters, in all our plans, and in all our words and our actions, we must stand together in love and unity, as one people under God to sustain tranquillity and peaceful coexistence.

It’s in our togetherness that we can harmonise to get things we set our minds to done. We are one. We are a family. We are Nigerians.

God bless You!
God bless Lagos!!
God bless Nigeria!!!

Politics / Ojuelegba Container Incident – One Accident Too Many by PapateeOfLife(m): 1:11pm On Sep 03, 2015
I learnt with sadness the unfortunate accident involving a truck in which three passengers lost their lives on Wednesday, September 2, 2015. I understand that a cement-laden container fell off the Ojuelegba Bridge crushing to death the occupants of a sport utility vehicle.

This is tragic. Not only for the victims and their families. But also for all Lagosians. I commiserate with the families of the innocent passengers who lost their lives in the incident.

I believe that this is a wake-up call for our law enforcement agencies to ensure that the provisions of Lagos State Road Traffic Law are fully implemented to the letters. Section 2 of the said Law clearly prohibits movement of trailers and trucks within the metropolis of Lagos between 6am and 9pm. Had the law been enforced, the accident which occurred, from reports, around noon could have been avoided.

Whilst we recognize the rights of owners and drivers of trucks to do their business, this must not be done at the expense of the lives and properties of other citizens who also have equal rights to earn their own living in peace and security.

Whilst I am praying for the repose of the soul of the dead, and for fortitude for their families and friends, I hereby call on all stakeholders to rise to the challenge of combating the menace constituted by truck drivers in the State. This is one accident too many.

Politics / Legislature Is The Most Misunderstood Arm Of Government In Nigeria - Sola Giwa by PapateeOfLife(m): 7:36pm On Aug 06, 2015
While many Nigerians are quick to point accusing fingers at the legislature for the numerous problems confronting the nation, a lawmaker has put the whole blame on the constant military intervention in the country.

Speaking during an interview recently, Hon. Sola Giwa, who is representing Lagos Island Constituency 2 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, said that there would always be the executive and the judicial arms of government at any point in time, but that the legislative arm of government exists only during democracy.

According to him, most Nigerians grew up under dictatorship, and most people do not appreciate the legislature because of this.

“The legislature is the most misconstrued and the most misunderstood arm of government. When you talk about building democracy, you are building legislature. Anytime we truncate democracy, we truncate legislature,” he said.

On the kind of people that are elected into the legislature, Giwa said that every society has the kind of leadership it deserves, adding that once the people want someone, the person would represent them, unlike the likes of the late head of state, Gen. Sanni Abacha and some other past leaders of the country, who he said people did not want.

He explained that fighting on the floor of the Assembly as it sometimes happen in the National Assembly and some state assemblies, is not peculiar to Nigeria as he said that democracy has been in China for many years and that they still fight and throw chairs there.

The lawmaker condemned a situation, where Nigerians discriminate between the lower and upper chambers of the National Assembly unlike what he said happens in the US that we copy, which he said does not discriminate between the lower and upper chambers of the Assembly.

Hon. Giwa commended President Muhammadu Buhari for visiting the United States of America recently, saying that it was a right step to take so that they could help the country fight terrorism and bring back the Chibok Girls, who were forcefully abducted in their schools by suspected members of Boko Haram.

He explained further that the people working with President Buhari would support him to avoid the mistakes he said the past government made and that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government is a meticulous one, which, according to him is the reason ministers have not been appointed.

On the return of motorcycle (okada) riders to Lagos roads, the lawmaker said that okada should not be used a a means of transportation in Lagos as a mega city.

“What we need is an integrated, inter-modal transportation. Apart from the issue of okada accidents, motorcycles are depleting the ozone layer as they use spoke engines, and they do not break down the fuel they are using. Okada is not generating any employment as none of its part is made in Nigeria. It is also being used to commit crime. We have 9,001 roads in Lagos and they were restricted from less than 500 roads. It was the people of each community that complained about okada in these places,” he said.

He accused Lagosians of politicising everything and accused some of them of bringing sentiment to the issue of okada, which he said was the reason they were back on the roads before the last general elections.

“After the election, we were back to square one as the okadas were operating on restricted roads. It is not good to play politics with governance. The press too should not sensationalise all these things. Nothing has changed, the law still remains intact. We didn’t need to give ultimatum to someone that is breaking the law. The police, VIO and LASTMA should just enforce the law on okada operation on Lagos roads,” he said.

Just opposite Conoil filling station, VIO stopped the bus for unknown reasons and the driver alongside those in the bus pleaded with the officials of VIO but they were at loggerheads and decided to take his bus to their office.

Right there and then the driver laid on the ground in front of his bus and said he wouldn't allow them go unless they ran him over.....lo and behold they did.

After he was pulled out of under the bus he experienced convulsion.

On lookers didn't spare the VIO officials as they took to their heels but for one that was caught and dealt with.
