For the 21st century mother, breast pump might not be too much of civilisation to ask for. It’s a necessary tool for breastfeeding children. Now technology is smarting up the already existing breast pump technology. At the CES 2017, Willow, the first all-in-one breast pump for our generation mothers was introduced. The mobile, discreet, and hands-free pump allows women to continue with their normal business while Willow minds its own business. It promises to bring “humanity and dignity to the pumping experience, so women no longer need to UnCloth while they pump. Without requiring a special bra, their hands, or any nudity, the Willow works quietly within a woman’s normal bra, collecting milk in an enclosed leak-proof bag, and tracks milk volume via a companion app. Its app app all the way!! Because it’s a smart device, Willow can sense let-down and automatically transitions to different phases depending on a woman’s milk production and timing. “Current breast pumps require women to step out of life. Willow lets women live their lives,” said Naomi Kelman, CEO and president of Willow. “We believe in bringing dignity and humanity to the breast pumping experience, because women shouldn’t have to UnCloth or give up who they are or how they move to be a mom.” Source: www.homeaplik.com

emperorizzy:The TV was recently unveiled at the 2017 CES this january. Will soon hit the market. Then we will know the price. But it will surely be an expensive venture |
Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is going on now in Las Vegas, US. A yearly event where electronics brands showcase there latest technological advancement. LG is waohing everybody with this Wallpaper TV called LG’s Signature W-Series OLED TV also known as Wallpaper OLED TV. This is incredible, as this ‘cardboard-like’ Wallpaper OLED TV slaps on your wall like a poster. It is coming in 65″ and 75″ sizes. The pictures are so impressive and tight. Attendees said to appreciate how thin the TV is, you really have to see it in person. It comes with a magnet that can easily gum to your wall. Its panels are barely thicker than a piece of cardboard and its bezel is nearly nonexistent, creating the effect of a picture that simply emanates from the wall. All of the TV’s hardware is stored inside an included soundbar armed with Dolby Atmos surround sound capability. The included sound bar acts as a hub, accepting all of the TV’s various inputs, including HDMI, USB, Ethernet, and standard coax for over-the-air TV reception. Video signal and power is passed to the W-Series television via an ordinary ribbon-style cable, further simplifying installation. The sound bar itself is something of a marvel, offering very convincing Dolby Atmos sound effects. In addition to HDR10 and Dolby Vision HDR support, LG’s new round of OLED TVs offers support for yet another type of HDR developed in a joint venture by Hollywood stalwart Technicolor and European electronics manufacturer Philips. Advanced HDR by Technicolor is said by LG to have widespread support in the film industry. The W-series offers no table-top or floor-stand mounting option. It is meant for your wall exclusively, offering more subtle shadow detail and higher brightness for a cinematic experience in your home. LG said this flagship Wallpaper TV will be fully available by the end of March, 2017. Indeed, LG has thrown the TV world (both consumers and manufacturers) into another difficult position of choice. The microwave oven has become essential to every modern kitchen. Due to its ability to save time, stress and reduce hazard, we can now heat that cup of tea in the morning before dashing out for work and reheat the frozen leftover soup in the evening when we come back. All with ease. However, like other appliances, we should not take the microwave for granted as impending dangers may turn into reality. To keep it working, here is a look at five things you should never put in your microwave. Aluminium foil Those foils we use to wrap our moi moi, cakes and snacks are not meant to follow the meal to the microwave oven. Reason being that the metal interior of your microwave is made to reflect back radio waves, which are usually called microwaves. These waves are responsible for the electromagnetic energy that warms up food. Aluminum foil reflects back the waves. The results are sparks and potentially a fire. Paper bags These days we shop in grocery stores and they collect our items in fancy paper bags. When you get home, do not allow that paper bag accompany any food to your microwave oven. A standard paper bag from the grocery store can catch fire in the microwave? That’s because it doesn’t have susceptors, a specialized material that can handle the radio waves produced by the microwave. As a result, fumes and toxins from the paper get released during the heating process, potentially causing a fire. Plastic and Steel mugs These handy cups are perfect for sipping coffee on the go. But don’t try to reheat your tea or coffee in them. Steel mugs can cause friction from the buildup of energy in the appliance. Many plastic mugs can’t take the heating process. But those written “microwave safe” on the outside are ok to enter the microwave oven. Takeaway Styrofoam Stryrofoam or polystyrene foam popularly called takeaway in Nigeria has save many restaurants from the excesses of plates and their inconvenience nature. But they have not done any good to the environment as takeaways are littered in every street corner and gutter, adding to the already stretched dirtiness of the street by sachet water polythene bags. When you buy a food in that restaurant and they choose a takeaway. If you get home, please do not reheat that food inside the takeaway. Kindly remove the food in the takeaway and put it in a stainless steel plate and then reheat in the microwave. Why? By using the styrofoam to reheat, the material can melt, releasing unappetizing and unhealthy toxins into your food. Eggs An eggshell traps steam that forms when the microwave does its job of heating. When that reaches critical mass, it can explode. The result is a very messy, hard-to-clean microwave oven. Christmas and New Year, those seasons of the year when celebrations are at their peak. We save for this period. And whether we are on low budget or with fat pocket, Christmas must be celebrated. And to celebrate, we buy and eat and merry. We stock fresh meat, fish, snacks, vegetables and other holiday goodies. But as we prepare those food, eat and enjoy that Christmas meal, keeping the leftovers and making them still taste great can be a challenge. And if we do not take care of them properly, they can easily go bad. So, here are some ideas that will keep your leftovers to still taste great. What To Do When You Have An Abundance of Meat After the chicken and turkey have been served and everybody have eaten to their satisfaction, but some leftovers are just too much to be given to the dogs (if you have any), here is a good method to go about them; wrap the leftover meat in an aluminium foil and put them in a tightly sealed container, then inside the refrigerator. By doing so, you are preserving the flavour of the meat until when next you are ready to take another bite. However, do not consider putting your food when they are hot in the refrigerator. It is bad for the food because it can condense it and affect its taste and also bad for the refrigerator as it can overwork the refrigerant. What About the Sauce, Stew, Soup etc. Mothers don’t joke with their refrigerators because of this reason. They want their Egusi soup and Chicken sauce to last longer because they prepared them in large quantities. Allow the hotness to warm before keeping the leftover, tightly covered in your refrigerator. Keeping The Vegetables Fresh Carrots, lettuce, peas and other vegetables whether cooked or fresh might not spoil so bad like meat, but it is still important to keep them properly. To preserve flavor as long as possible, put the vegetables in a storage container and seal the lid tightly. If you want to avoid the flavor of your vegetables mixing with other leftovers, be sure to store them in their own container. Don’t Refrigerate those Snacks Leftovers can come from the snacks we buy from those eateries we visited. When everyone is tired of eating more pie, cake and their likes. That’s fine. Kindly place them in a safe container and keep them out of the reach of curious pets. Do not store the leftover snacks in the refrigerator as leftover snacks taste much better when they are not served cold. Anyway, that leftover vanilla icecream can be best kept in the freezer. Cover it tightly and do not get it close to any food which might diffuse its content into it. The Fruits!! It is not proper to keep fruits naked in your refrigerator, considering the fact that you are in an environment where light is unstable. Bacteria can rejuvenate themselves when the fridge is not working and the inside is assuming a room temperature. Your fruits might be at risk when this happens. So, it’s better you get a transparent plastic bag or bowl to store your fruits. The Drinks If power is steady, please don’t put bottles made of glass material in the freezer. It can explode. Freezers now even crack plastic bottles. Except there is an event and you are in a hurry to chill the drinks, you can allow the drinks inside the freezer for few hours. But if there’s a leftover fruit juice or its like, cork it well and place in a position that wont allow it to tumble. The taste will surely change if you place it near a food that its aroma could easily permeate into the juice. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your loved ones.

Hahahahahahahahha. Waoh. To Freeze underwear, that definitely a weird way to go. Guess what, as I typed this post on my blog.....I was reasoning to try out freezing one of my boxers. Imagine the feeling wearing a cold undies for some minutes in a hot weather. Waoh!!!!! TrapQueen77: |

Freezing is a way of living that has been with us for ages. We freeze our raw food (like meat), leftovers, and water. Because freezing is a process that slows down regular biological processes, the effect is when we freeze our food, those organisms that would have had a swell time in a room temperature will become powerless and inactive. However, there is a weird belief that freezing makes something to burn longer. Take the candle for example; a candle kept in the freezer before lightening it will take moderately longer time to burn than a candle left in a room temperature. But, there is a weirder way to go unconventional with your freezer. Your Jeans. We wear jeans all the time because we love them, which means we have to wash them all the time and so they slowly start to fade with each wash and wear. At the short or long run, we become either hell bent to rock our faded jeans or we sadly turn it into a foot mat or dispose them. I remember when I was younger, my older cousin will tell me not to wash my jeans always, if not it will fade easily. He proposed using a hard brush to remove the stains and I should wash it once in two weeks or in a month depending on how frequent I wear it. Now some individuals are proposing one other option for your jeans to rockingly last. Freeze the Jeans!!! Normally jeans can easily smell due to bacteria feasting on its favourable temperature and environment. When they begin to smell, we wash them and often wash causes it to fade. But what if we freeze the jeans. By freezing, we press the stand still button of those bacteria that are enjoying the room temperature and environment of the jeans. They become inactive and some can even die. As the lives of the bacteria are chilled, their activity come to a halt and freshness is being revived in the jeans. Freezing your jeans does not stop you from washing them, because it does not kill the bacteria, it only slows them down. Rather, freezing means that you won’t have to wash your jeans as often and they might last a little longer before beginning to fade. And it also makes the jeans to smell better. You know Nigeria is pretty hot place especially during the dry season, so we like to cool everything. Some people are taking the bold and controversial step of putting their pillowcase or socks in the fridge or freezer before using it to sleep. I understand. Heat could be very discomforting. So any little nifty trick that might keep you cool and give you that refreshing bit of comfort during sleep hours is okay. As I was typing this post, I was thinking what if we freeze our under wears: boxers, pants for some minutes before putting them on. Waoh, that,s very weird but I will love to try it. Note that is not advisable to freeze your jeans next to an unwrapped food or putting on your jeans straight out of the freezer. If you have anything odd that you put in your fridge or freezer that you find helpful or have a friend who likes to break fridge/freezer convention, share with us. When it comes to an appliance like the washing machine; how we use it, the capacity of clothes we put in a wash, where we place it and how we clean it can contribute to the overall life span. Therefore it is pertinent we possess at least the basic knowledge of how our washing machines work and how to fix the minor problems we might encounter. Generally, a washing machine can last up to 10 years. But small problems might arise that you can quickly fix with minimal effort and Thermocool Nigeria has highlighted some and how to fix them. Check the bolts and floor level When you notice your washing machine hops or skips from time to time, it might likely mean that it still have the transport bolts (the bolts that help keep the inner drum unit in place while being delivered) attached to it or its feet are not level. Therefore, if your washing machine is bouncing or you just got a new one, do well to double check if the bolts have been removed to prevent a major damage. Also make sure that the floor underneath your washing machine is level and the washing machine is not resting in anything that might make its base unstable. However, after investigation and find that neither the bolts nor floor level is the case, it might be a sign that the shock absorbers in your washing machine are experiencing wear and tear and need to be replaced as soon as possible. What’s that noise about? If your washing machine makes an unbearable noise, first blame it on a stubborn clothing item before heaping the blame on the washing machine itself. The clothing item might likely be a shirt button or a bra coil that has gone loose and its bouncing and tumbling around the drum. Or maybe your clothing items are not well balanced within the machine. To solve this problem, simply open the machine and reposition your clothes or remove whatever is loose and the noise levels should go back to a comfortable, non-distracting tone. However, if this doesn’t solve the problem, then there is a chance that the motor mount or drum may need to be tightened. If this is indeed the case, then don’t hesitate to contact a technician or the repair team of the brand you are using. Overflowing washing machine! What if you walk into your laundry room and the floor is flooded. You search and find out there is a leak in your washing machine. In the worst case scenario, your tub might actually be cracked and you might need an upgrade to a new washing machine. However, it’s also worth testing out other solutions first before reaching this conclusion. For example, it might be worth checking whether your machine is overloaded with clothes. Did you know that your washing machine should be no more than ¾ full? So do not stuff it with much clothes. However, it might also be a sign of wear and tear with regards to your washing machine’s water hose. If you can, change the hose or contact technicians to do that. Sometimes all that is required is a tightening of the hose, other times you might need the hose replaced entirely. Similarly, if you find that there’s a lack of water flowing into your washing machine, it might be worth looking into tightening or replacement options as well. My Advice Carefully go through the booklet that comes with the washing machine when you bought it. Reading that could save you from minor ignorance about the appliance. And when you think the problem is too big for you to handle, contact service technicians to work on it. It is true we live in a technologically-sophisticated world. But buying the right TV for your home might put your brain into a more sophisticated thinking. And most times times consumers give up and go for anything in the market. Modern television technology is so vast and full of acronyms and jargons to promote and explain their features. All these throw the consumers off balance. They give up on knowing because they simply cant just understand the many jargons. In this post, I will be taking you through the different types of TVs, focusing on the modern TVs such as the LCD, LED, Plasma and OLED. CRT TV We often refer to this as the box television. Their fall began in this 21st century due to the introduction of smaller LCD screens. Though it’s not the first TV but it is definitely in the modern TV lineage. It is called the Cathode Ray Tube TV. The reason it’s so bulky is because the box houses a phosphorescent screen and a electron gun. An image is created by firing electrons through this ‘gun’ onto a screen, exciting the particles on it to display images. LCD TV LCD TV make use of liquid crystal display (LCD) panel to control where light is displayed on your screen. When an electric current is passes through the liquid, it causes the crystals to align so that light can or cannot pass pass through. LCD crystals do not produce their own light, so an external light source like a florescent bulb called Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFLs) is needed to create an image. CCFLs provide backlighting to illuminate LCD screen. LCD consumes more power and its local dimming feature causes the fluorescent tubes to light the entire screen evenly, so there is no way to vary the backlighting intensity in different parts of the screen. Contrast and black levels is not better assured in LCDs, as they are not great at blocking out all the light coming from the backlight, making it extremely difficult to pull off an image well. However, they are economical to purchase. LED TV LED TV is not a technology, rather an updated version of the LCD generation. LED use the same technology as an LCD as both make use of liquid crystal display, but LED TV is being illuminated by an array of light emitting diodes (LEDs) instead of the CCFLs. The LEDs are smaller in size and far more efficient which gives them a few advantages like being made to be thinner. Most LED TVs measure under an inch because they add very little depth to the display profile. LEDs consumes less power and the most important difference between LCD and LED is called local dimming- a selective lighting technique that allows for deeper blacks and better overall picture. As LCD fluorescent tubes results in poor black levels and contrast, LED offers a solution to this with their local dimming technique. The idea of local dimming is to control the output of light emitting diodes so that the TV can shut off all the lights it does not need and just use the right ones, instead of being on full brightness all the time. This attribute makes much better black levels and contrast and as a result pulling off a good image. However, it should be noted that not all LED TVs come fully equipped with local dimming. Infact, this local dimming divided LED TVs into two: edge-lit and full-array LED TVs. Full-array LED displays are backlit by an array of LEDs directly behind the screen, which enables focused lighting areas resulting in more effective brightness and darkness. Full-arrat LED TVs pull of better local dimming which can compete with plasma TVs. Edge-lit LED as the name suggest have lights set around the television frame. Edge-lit models reflect light into the centre of the monitor. They are the thinnest and lightest models available, since they have fewer lights in the centre of the screen. Therefore, ensure to know whether it is full-array or edge-lit LED TV you are buying before you conclude on payment plans. LED is the most popular format of TV on the market now due to its cost, size and versatility, although it is not the highest quality image available. Well, if you can afford an LED-backlit HDTV, then go for it. They are thin, easy to mount, consumes less energy and produce great picture quality. Remember that it comes at a higher price too. PLASMA TV Plasma screens are made of 2 sheets of glass with a mixtures of gases stored between the layers. These gases are injected and sealed in plasma form during the manufacturing process, hence why we have the name ‘Plasma TV’. The basic idea of a plasma display is to illuminate tiny, coloured fluorescent lights to form an image. Each pixel is made up of three fluorescent lights- a red light, a green and a blue light. Plasma, is arguably superior to LCD & LED in terms of contrast and colour accuracy. They consume more electricity and are on larger screen sizes, usually 40”+. The cinematic experience they offer could be similar to the LED TV and for not much money. OLED TV OLED is a major advancement in the screen technology. However, do not mind the name. OLED is not in any way connected to LED or LCD technology. OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode and uses organic material like carbon to create light when electricity is supplied to it. Secondly, OLED TV does not require any backlight to illuminate the set, which can make the OLED screen to be super thin and significantly flexible. What separates OLEDs from LCD/LED displays is that the pixels of OLEDs produce their own light, and so when they need to be black they are completely turned off, rather than relying on the backlight to turn off on their behalf, resulting in a much better colour and contrast. On the whole, OLED is thinner, more flexible, faster at processing images, creates deeper colours and more crisp in contrast. It is, however, still very expensive. Can OLED do 3D Though 3D might have lost its initial allure it once had, but manufacturers are still interested in incorporating the feature in their high-end models. In most cases, 3D comes in passive variety which means cheaper glasses and less screen glow. This might drop the resolution you will experience. However, with the OLED sets now featuring an Ultra HD 4K display, the poor resolution has been taken care of. So, grasping these few information, it will now depend on what you will want and what your pocket can afford. THANK YOU Source: http://www.homeaplik.com/tvs/hap-113-different-types-tv-explained

From the refrigerator to the blender, sitting room to the kitchen, our homes are filled with electrical home appliances that often we can’t do without. These appliances have made life easy, comfortable and allowing us more time to carry out other activities that maybe there are no appliance to do that. However, what are the potential dangers that lurk around these electrical appliances when they are not used or maintained properly. Whether the danger can spark fire or cause an electric shock, it could be frightening or life threatening. And we don’t want that. Understanding these potential hazards can help keep you, your family, and your property safe. Here are some most common dangers with the appliances we use every day: Danger 1: Frayed Cord The electric cord on your appliance contains a live wire and a neutral wire, both securely insulated from direct contact with water, flammable material, or your own hands. Once the cord becomes frayed, the live wire is exposed, leaving your household vulnerable to electrocution or electric fires. Check your cords regularly and replace any frayed or damaged cords immediately. If a power point switch is cracked or broken, contact an electrician; do not touch it or try to repair it yourself. Danger 2: Poor Maintenance Many appliances need to be cleaned or cleared regularly to prevent build-up of material which could ignite a fire. Regularly clean ovens and hot plates to prevent the build-up of spilt foods and pooling fats. Clear dust and lint away from the electric motors of exhaust fans. In this part of the world, we don not know what servicing is all about. We only service, for example our generators when faults have accumulated causing it not to be operational. Therefore, for your own and appliance good, imbibe the habit of keeping a written record of your appliances. To know when they need servicing so you can attend to this regularly and on time. This way, you know any minor issues have been corrected and the appliance is still safe to use. Danger 3: Overloaeded circuit Overloaded circuit can be very inconvenient and very untidy to our homes. Your wiring system can only handle a certain level of power, so circuit breakers (or fuses) are put in place to limit the power going through your electrical system. However, if you exceed the power demands on one circuit, the circuit breaker will shut down the entire circuit so as to prevent it from causing damage. Too many appliances taking advantage of the same circuit can lead to overloads, but as you likely have several circuits within your home, you can simply move some appliances to a different circuit. For example, if your microwave and electric kettle is plugged in one circuit, you can take the blender to another circuit in another room to blend your fruits. Also you can unplug the appliances that are not regularly in use. If you find that you are having regular short circuits, you should check every appliance carefully, to establish where the problem may be originating. Extension cords should only ever be a temporary measure—not only do they have the potential to overload your circuit, they are also potential trip hazards, and may become tangled or frayed with frequent use. Danger 4: Proximity to Water Water is an excellent conductor of electricity, which means that if you are touching water that comes into contact with electricity, the electricity will likely travel through the water and then through your body to reach the ground—which can cause serious injuries. Keep all electrical appliances away from water, and never touch anything electrical while you are standing in or near water, or when your hands are wet. If an electrical fire starts in your home, use a multi-purpose fire extinguisher rather than attempting to extinguish it with water, as doing so may cause further shorts and more-intense fires. No matter how hard we try to be sparkling clean, our clothes will always be dirty. Our clothes are simply not just meant to cover unclothedness, but to absorb dirtiness. So whether you want to get a new washing appliance or for knowledge sake, here are tips on choosing the right washing machine that will suit your apartment, family and your lifestyle. You can follow this site www.homeaplik.com to know more about home appliances and the latest home appliances First is to consider the load. There is a Top-Load Washing Machine and a Front-Load Washing Machine Top-Load Washing Machine are those you need to put your laundry from the top of the machine and it has agitator models which cost less and are faster than the non-agitator models, which can be called High-Efficiency (HE) Washing machines. HE washers are good at cleaning, gentler on fabrics, use less water, and have larger capacities. They also spin faster, which removes more water and spends less time in drying. However, the spinning can tangle clothes. Also some HE washers can be very deep. You load your laundry in the Front-Load washer by opening the door in the front of the washer. Most times you need to bend to properly load your clothes. However, they are the more expensive washers. The best front-loaders clean better and are gentler than the best HE top-loading washing machines while using less water. Front-loaders take longer than HE top-loaders, but spin faster, extracting more water and cutting dryer time. The high-spin speed, combined with the way they spin, can cause some washing machines to vibrate. Thankfully, our concrete floors majorly seen in African homes can absorb vibrations well, unlike wood-framed floors. Note that some front-load washing machines develop mold from water collecting in the folds of the rubber gasket on the machine opening. Therefore, it is advisable to leave the door of the washer open after usage for proper aeration. Secondly, Know Your Available Space. Whether you live in an apartment or a flat, sizing up the space to place the washing machine is necessary. If you are seriously limited in space, size should matter. If you’re putting your washer near bedrooms or the family room, consider the ones that pollute less noise. You’ll know they’re working but they shouldn’t disturb you. However, many manufacturers have reduced the vibrations of front-load washing machines. Thirdly, Know the Capacity. If you are into laundry services, you might be considering a washer of 6.2 cubic foot capacity which can hold up to 28 full-size bath towels. But if the clothes to wash in your home are often not that much, a 4.2 and 5.1 cubic feet which should hold 17 to 21 bath towels respectively, can enter your list. Also, at 3.3 to 4.2 cubic feet, 14 to 17 bath towels should fit. Fourthly, Mind the Features. In this our technology age, features should matter in every appliance we are buying. Take Steam for example. A washer with steam setting improves the washer’s stain removal. In Africa, we get dirty easily due to prevailing conditions, a steam feature in our washing machines should be a must have. However, the more the features, the higher the prices. Other features are: Automatic Dispensers: Designed to dispense detergent, bleach, and fabric softener at the right time, some washing machines can even hold up to several months’ worth of detergent. Automatic Temperature Control: Rather than simply mixing hot and cold water in preset proportions, auto temperature control adjusts the water to the optimal temperature for the setting selected. Extra Rinse Cycle: Front-loaders and high-efficiency top-loaders use a lot less water than top-loader agitator washing machines. Using the extra rinse cycle can help get rid of stubborn dirt and detergent residues that just can’t let go. Washers that the inside/tub are made of Stainless Steel can withstand higher spin speeds, extracting more water and cutting dryer time. End-of-Cycle-Signal alerts you that your laundry is done and clean. Note however, that these tips have not exhausted all you need to know about washing machines. There will be more classes on this interesting home appliance.

If the Oshifala teacher is a permanent teacher (not PTA teacher)... then resolving the matter is easy; Federal Ministry of Education should transfer him to King's College or any Federal Govt Boys College.....for precautionary reasons, let him not b close to any Girl's College for now. |
With more than 20million of her youths unemployed, Nigeria can be likened to be a person sitting at the keg of gunpowder, and that sitting position is too dangerous and discomforting for a nation. When the trigger is pulled and the bullets roll out through the barrel, a sitting person has more work to do than a standing person. To say that the gunpowder has been fired and the explosive mixture spreading all over the country and the noise continuously reverberating in the ears and minds of Nigerians cannot be out of place. We sat with laxity, never gauging our ability to stand or even walk out. Now it appears we will remain in our sitting position and assimilate all the potassium nitrate, charcoal and sulphur which the gunpowder have to deliver and tarry till its effects subside, if at all it will, then learn how to stand later, maybe limply. To give a human face to any policy a government is promulgating is to basically secure her citizens, then to put cash and food on the pockets and tables of families. In Nigeria, very few citizens are secured, cash and food seem to have developed unknown phobia for the ordinary countrymen. Whether a policy is prescribed or proscribed, implemented or left untouched on the office table, there are certain groups that practically bears the brunt of the proactiveness or incompetence of government- THE YOUTHS. Ten years ago, in my teenhood, I thought the vicissitudes of daily life were daunting, annoying and sickening. Those vicissitudes overflowed with a want to be free. But life stared with going to school and constrained to learning subjects I don’t like. It also stared with another bitter fact of waking up early to wash plates, clothes and to clean the house on weekends. And the most emotionally-challenging is to keep up with my peers in that teenhood. To keep up means to be accepted; to do as much as your street peers do; to know as much as they know and to feel necessarily belonged. Juxtaposing these interesting facts and that longing to break out of the shell of parents and guidance protection, plus the hormonal urge which accompanies adolescence prompted a repine for adulthood. Now in my twenties, which I can term introduction to adulthood, things have expectedly changed, but not promising anyway. I have noticed that there is a long untarred road between teenhood and adulthood. A glance at that road by an ordinary Nigerian teenager would cause that teen to prefer being stuck on the latter side of the road. Unfortunately, time and age has defiled humanistic wisdom and cannot be stopped, thereby making many Nigerians vulnerable to the bitter experience of that road. Between our living school and becoming an acclaimed adult in sub Saharan Africa, it requires a long wait which can be termed waithood. Regrettably, the realities of waithood begin to dawn on most Nigerian graduates immediately they graduate from the higher institution. It become moments of sober reflections, annoying moments of waking up daily and not having any meaningful thing to engage with, moments to embrace the fact that millions have left school and are roaming the streets without jobs and there is high probability you might join them in that waithood. It turns out to be taunting moments where one will find it skittish to answer phone calls of younger ones for the fear of them requesting. Victims of waithood could only wish time would rewind itself and drop them at the junction of teenhood; where they can wash plates again, clean the house, study mathematics and be under the grips of parents, never to think of working to provide for themselves. In the potholed road of waithood, the greatest torment is to know you have to fend for yourself, learning how to fend for yourself and practically fending for yourself. If adulthood means cutting yourself off the chain of parents support and contributing to the welfare of the younger ones, parents and the community; if it means starting life with a furnished room apartment; if it means nursing plans on how to be a parent and building your own home, then late teenhood should be the time to prepare for the herculean task and waithood would be the transition period. To a balanced expectation, waithood is supposed to be transient for fresh graduates. A period to learn to settle down, not a time to scramble for a living. A time to begin mulling over humble investments rather than struggling to make ends meet. Fatefully in Nigeria and sub Saharan Africa, there is a long and tumultuous drive on the road of waithood; inundated with potholes, sharp corners and no u-turn. Often the road seems dark and overwhelmed by haze during daylight. Millions of Nigerians have been stuck on this road even before our democracy and many have been assured by the dwindling economy of the country that they will join the bandwagon. One of my lecturers in the great University of Benin, Edo state, often remembers with nostalgia during his days in higher institution, how employers will hand over employment letters to graduands and invite some for interview during convocation ceremonies. Jobs were available then and no lost dignity in any job. But now, in Nigeria, an employment letter of a fifty thousand salary can be likened as one of the valued possessions of a job seeker. Employment don’t come easy, sweat and blood have to mix together due to the stress of trekking the whole Lagos in search for a decent job. Factually, an average Nigeria graduate has a plan for the future which has been stifled by a counter plan. In a nutshell, the future is bleak and uncertain. Daily, graduates troop into the field of job market and comes back with stories that can be better felt than imagined- the organisation said they cannot absorb me; they need a 5 year experienced person; someone told me to pay some ridiculous amount to be considered for the job. Affected parents have also been stuck on the whims of waithood. Since the human race for survival revolves from the older generation to the younger, the transition period of taking over responsibility is very crucial for that cycle to remain fulfilling. It becomes obscure and overshadowed with inconsistency when the transition period approaches; it forces Nigerian parents never to experience retirement from the financial burdens of the family, even when graduates litter their homes. Not that Nigerian youths are indolent as some have argued, but available institutions can rarely absorb half of our teeming youths, and government policies and culture, over the years have impeded the development of the youths by engineering the environment never to favour ingenuity. So since 1999, Nigeria has been churning out graduates with smeared future; graduates that will be thrown into the labour market with reckless abandon; youths that would wish to start small but can neither get any start-up moral boost nor capital from the government; youths that are left to grind their ways through the ever changing and challenging forces of the labour market without any buffer from the government, and they come out bruised, unconcerned and unpatriotic about their fatherland. Millions of Nigerians have been stuck in waithood for years. Thousands have had theirs overstretched to a decade or so, and it has completely changed how a youth in Nigeria takes responsibility. Many graduates shelter under their parents for years before they could be able to cater for themselves, our cultural beliefs have somehow excused the female folks from the frustration of this unprogressive life; they could easily sit at home and wait for maybe an accomplished man to woo them into marriage. But the male folks are seriously in the business of struggling their way out of this. Marriage is now scary to many young men in Nigeria, and this can be attributed to the complete lack of financial resources to raise a decent home, depriving the larger society that revered smallest unit of its existence. Since our democracy, waithood has mocked higher education in Nigeria. It has made those that toed the line of learning a trade or business to feel more fulfilled, rather than investing the four years in the higher institution that teaches abstract curriculum and unpractical ventures. Notwithstanding, waithood has sprouted the best out of many Nigerian youths. That tortuous road has brought out real creativity from the sheer disappointment of many Nigerians. They have learnt to embrace that staggering road, carve out their own path, steadfastly and successfully struggling on their own road and sealing the potholes with values, riches and fame. Accomplished Nigerian youths are teaching their counterparts in many parts of Africa that for their own branch to sprout and their flowers to blossom and their leaves to remain lush green in the continent of hidden plenty, they have to steadily walk, committed to removing the boulders, resilient to stand when the potholes have tripped them off and vehemently dissenting to remain stuck on the road of waithood. Chiefly, governments all over African need to see their youths as a ticking time bomb which must be attended to, to save the society. Emergency services of practical youth empowerment have to be rendered to all youths in Africa to defuse the effects of this weapon of mass destruction. The effects of youth restiveness can be far-reaching for a society that has stretched her younger generation beyond their elastic limit. |
