Also it is very risky to judge a player based on a Champion’s League purple patch for a club. Remember that Monaco team in which only Mbappe and Fabinho have lived up to expectations. Mendy, Sidibe, Lemar, Bakayoko have all fallen away.

Just because a player shines for a couple of games in a short tournament like the Champions League (or even the World Cup) does not mean he is the real deal. Especially players from backwater leagues. A bigger sample size is needed.

If you acknowledge this fact, why then do most fans choose to rate players off these short competitions?

I think every transfer is a punt, the Dutch league has produced some of the greatest players ever just the same way others from the league flopped...

I'd love to see VDB play consistently and watch De Jong play for a coach who prioritizes ball possession (fingers crossed on Xavi) as for De Ligt, I still think he should have joined a possession based team and not the Old Lady of Italian football...

As for Tadic, I don't think he was a bad player at Southampton, I always thought he was one of their better performers.

You have to factor in the league in such situations. It is not automatic that because he is doing well there now that he will adapt to the the EPL.

I am making particular reference to Manchester United and how players who are excelling elsewhere come here only to struggle no thanks to our patternless play...Sancho and VDB being the latest...

What saddens me the most is that conte is likely heading to spurs.
