PoliticsHere Is The Full Text Of President Jonathan’s Declaration Speech Today by paulabola(op): 6:08pm On Nov 11, 2014
Read below the full text of president Jonathans declaration speech today Nov. 11 at the Eagles Square Dear Compatriots: 1. Four years ago, precisely September 18, 2010; I stood in this Eagle Square, to offer myself for election as the President of our beloved country on the platform of our great party; the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). 2. Seven months after that declaration, you elected me to lead this country with overwhelming support from all parts of our Nation. I remain grateful for the trust you reposed in me to lead our Nation through uncommon challenges in our march of progress as a united and democratic country. 3. Over the years, the Almighty God has made it possible for me to develop a bond with you and I am grateful for your support and understanding in the difficult periods we have journeyed through. 4. Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, our stewardship has not been without challenges. We have had to deal with the wave of insurgency that has swept through some parts of our dear country. Only yesterday, Government Science Secondary School in YobeState was bombed by insurgents, killing our promising young children who were seeking education to build the country and support their parents. Many Nigerians have lost their lives and property to these mindless killings. Let me crave the indulgence of all present here to stand up to observe a minutes silence in honour of these young lads wholost their lives. Clearly, this has cast a dark cloud on our Nation but we will surely win the war against terror. A number of young men and women have been kidnapped by these criminal elements including our daughters from Chibok. We will free our daughters and defeat terrorism. 5. We are equipping the armed forces and deploying special forces to engage the terrorist and end this senseless war. We must protect our country. We must save our people. I will do everything humanly possible to end this criminal violence in our Nation. 6. To ensure the long term stability and development of the affected areas, government has launched three programmes: The Presidential Initiative for the North East, the Victim Support Fund and the Safe School Initiative. The Presidential Initiative for the Northeastis focused on improving infrastructure and economic growth in the region. The Safe School Initiative is centred on creating a safe environment to encourage our children in the communities to acquire education. The Victim Support Fund, a partnership with the Private Sector, has raised about 60 billion Naira, which will help to empower and rehabilitate victims of terror. I promise the victims of these dastardly acts that we will continue to stand with you. 7. I am grateful to all Nigerians for standing with me. 8. Let me also thank the leaders and elders of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, for the opportunity you have given to me to serve our country, Nigeria. 9. I am overwhelmed by the trust, confidence and support of the various organs of our party, the Board of Trustees, the National Caucus, the National Executive Committee, the National Working Committee, the PDP Governors Forum, members of the PDPCaucuses of the National Assembly, and others. 10. This day affords me the opportunity to continue the conversation of development we started together. 11. Infrastructure has been a major focus area of my administration and so, we pursued the power sector reform to this point of irreversible progress. Nigeria has undertaken a most transparent and corruption free bidding process, attracting global commendation. The on-going 450MW Azura Power Plant in Edo State is a testimony to the success of this transformation. 12. We have also resumed development of our Hydro-Power potential, with the construction of the 700MW Zungeru Hydro-Power Plant, while construction work on the 3,050MW Mambilla Hydro-Power Plant is about to take off. 13. Our power generation and distribution companies have now been privatized. We are firmly on the road to guaranteed regular power supply in the months ahead. This our bold move, is paying off! 14. We are committed to environmental protection and conservation and reducing vulnerability to climate change. In this regard, we have embarked on a number of projects across the country. Of particular note is the AfricanGreat Green Wall Programmed, where we have released about 16 billionnaira for implementation. The project will create a green belt across 11 states from Kebbi to Borno. 15. In the past three and half years, the water sector has witnessed unprecedented improvement. Access to potable water is now 67%, up from 58% in 2010, while sanitation coverage is 41%, from 32% within the same period. 16. Major developments in water include the completion of 37 Dams and rehabilitation of 10, with several others on-going construction. The flagship Kashimbila Multipurpose Dam which is being built to contain flood from Lake Nyos, is now at 90% completion. We have also completed about 5,000 rural and semi urban water schemes. 17. We are reforming the National Urban Water supply programmes in 12 states, with 385 formal and informal irrigation projects, covering a total land area of 118000 ha, cultivated mostly by small holder farmers. This has yielded over 3 million metric tons of assorted grains and vegetables, with a market value of about 45billion naira. 18. Before the advent of this administration, the Railway system was practically dead. Today, we have revived the rail sector. The narrow gauge line from Lagos to Kano has been rehabilitated with improved coaches providing regular services. The rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt-Maidugurirail line is progressing with the Port Harcourt-Gombe segment as well as the branch line from Kafanchan to Kaduna expected to be completed and fully operational by December 2014. 19. Already, work on the Abuja-Kaduna standard gauge rail line, is progressing. The tracks of the rail line will be completed by December this year 2014. Upon completion of the project in the first quarter of 2015, itwill be possible for Nigerians to live in Kaduna and work in Abuja. The Itape-Ajaokuta-Wari standard gauge line has attained an advanced stage, with the track completely laid. We hope to commence full operation before the end of 2015. 20. Other segments of the new standard gauge speed train network are planned with contract already awarded for the Lagos Ibadan Segment. There will be more of such modern and faster rail connections in the coming years. Already, discussions are now at advanced stage, for the Coastal rail line that will traverse through 10 states, from Lagos through the South-Southand South-East, all the way to Calabar. 21. My administration has successfully completed the dredging of the lower River Niger from Baro in Niger State to Warriin in Delta State. The cheering news is that over 6.7 million passengers and over 1.6 million tonnes of cargo have been moved through this channel in less than three years. 22. I am happy to also report that our ports now operate 24 hour service, which has led to the reduction of clearing time and improved efficiency. 23. When I assumed office in 2010, out of the 35,000km of federal roads nationwide, only about 5,000km were motorable. Today, that number has increased to about 25,000km. We expect to complete the remaining 10,000kmin three years while initiating new ones. 24. I made a commitment to build two new major bridges across the River Niger and River Benue. Today, the new bridge over the River Benue, connecting Loko in Nassarawa State to Oweto in Benue State has reached an advance stage of completion, while work has commenced on the Second Niger Bridge. 25. Beyond these, my administration has concluded plans to re-commence the construction of Bodo-Bonny Road with three major bridges on the alignment that will link the Island of Bonny with Rivers mainland. 26. Preliminary works have started on my administrations planned re-construction and expansion of the MurtalaMuhammed International Airport Road in Lagos to a world class entry point into our country. Only a few months ago, work started on the dualization of Kano-Katsina Road.
Science/TechnologyFacebook Finally Lets You Control Your News Feed by paulabola(op): 5:18pm On Nov 11, 2014
Facebook is giving users more options to control what content they see in their feeds.

Starting Friday, changes are being rolled out to let users give more feedback to Facebook about whether they want to see certain posts in their feeds, with a more direct way to "unfollow" friends. Additionally, a new settings page will be made available to let users see which people, pages and groups have appeared most prominently in their feeds, with options to unfollow or re-follow them.

Previously, users could click a dropdown arrow in the top right corner of posts to hide that post or unfollow the person or page. The new option will let users see less from the person or page. From there, they can choose to unfollow them. A person is not alerted when they are unfollowed, but their posts will no longer appear in the user's feed.

Those options for hiding stories will start rolling out immediately for the desktop, arriving on mobile in the coming weeks, Facebook said, though it may take time to reach all users. The new settings page will roll out on both desktop and mobile starting today.

On the desktop, the settings page can be accessed by clicking the dropdown arrow in the top right corner of any page and then selecting "news feed settings." In Facebook's mobile app, it can be reached by tapping the "more" menu and scrolling down to "news feed settings."

Facebook routinely tweaks its algorithm governing the types of content users see in their feeds, and how much of it. But the company still does not know exactly what people want to see at any given time. With these changes, Facebook is giving some power to users to help make their feeds more personalized, which the company hopes will entice them to keep coming back to the site.

"What you do in news feed helps determine what you see in news feed," said Greg Marra, product manager at Facebook, in announcing the changes.

The news feed has become the predominant feature on Facebook for letting users connect and share content. But it's also a delicate issue, with each change to the filtering algorithm likely to promote some types of content at the expense of others. The company said it would be showing more "high quality content" in the feed like news articles shared among friends, while demoting click-bait-type stories.

Meanwhile, small businesses operating pages on the site have said their posts are appearing less frequently, unless they pay to advertise.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, speaking during a town hall meeting Thursday, said there is "inherent conflict" in how the news-feed ranking system must decide to filter the massive amount of content posted to the site.

"Do we optimize the news feed for the best experience when reading, or to help businesses reach people?" he said.

"We optimize for users first," he said.

TravelMan Completes Epic 26-year, 550,000-mile Road Trip Around The World In One Unbre by paulabola(op): 9:11am On Oct 29, 2014
When Gunther Holtorf set out on an 18-month road trip to Africa in 1988, he had no idea his journey would go on for almost _three decades_. Gunther ended up traveling a whopping 556,000 miles spanning 215 countries in his trusty old car a Mercedes Benz G Wagon nicknamed Otto. Thats the equivalent of making two trips from the Earth to the Moon, and then some!

It all started in 26 years ago, when Gunther quit his 30-year service at Lufthansa, met his fourth wife Christine, and together they braved gravel-covered, pothole-ridden roads from their hometown of Bavaria, all the way to Africa. After driving over 62,000 miles across the continent and suffering five bouts of Malaria, they decided to just keep going.

The couple removed the two rear seats in the car in order to make room for a mattress and storage space for clothing, food, tools, spare parts and utensils. After that, there was just no looking back. They made their way through South America, North America, Asia, Australia and Europe, always taking Otto with them wherever they went. In fact, they looked upon their beloved car as the third member of their family.

The couple managed to afford their travels using the little money they had saved up they purchased food from local markets and slept in their truck. A sponsorship was always offered, but a sponsorship is never free of charge, Gunther explained. I dont go to hotels or restaurants. Not at all. We shop in local markets and prepare our own food.

I met so many people who said they want to do what we did, but when we discuss details, they say: I need my bread rolls and hot coffee in the morning and a private shower and my newspaper. We werent tourists; we had to bear down and restrict ourselves. Sometimes we lived in very miserable conditions. It requires a hell of a lot of patience. They had no mobile phones, no blogs, no Facebook or Twitter pages to document their epic journey.

When Christine passed away from cancer in 2010, Gunther decided to carry on, with her picture hanging on the trucks rear view mirror. She asked me to please continue, not forgetting her and to do what I did on her behalf, he said. Interestingly, although Gunther and Christine wanted to marry, they never found the time they were too busy traveling. They only managed to tie the knot two weeks before Christine died.

A few months after her passing, Christines son Martin joined Gunther on a long journey to Sri Lanka, China, and North Korea. In 2012, Gunther found a new companion 45-year-old Elke Dreweck, who took a year off work and joined him for a trip to Japan. Gunther, now 77, finally ended the epic journey this year at the Brandenburg Gates in Berlin before heading back home to Bavaria. The more you have traveled, the more you realise how little you have seen, he said upon his return.

But Gunther insists that Otto is the real hero of this story. A lot of people have tried to travel everywhere, he said. Im just another traveler, but the car, the car is special. Otto is the most traveled vehicle on earth.

Out of the 556,000 miles, approximately 155,000 were off road across 410 borders outside Europe. The car has been inside 41 ocean shipping containers and has boarded 113 deep-sea ferries. Otto has endured temperatures as low as -27 degrees Celsius in Serbia and as high as 50 degrees Celsius near Alice Springs, Australia. It has also gone as far as the Mount Everest base camp, 5,200 meters

Otto is a celebrity in its own right, and its final resting place will now be at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. Apart from reinforced suspension, the car is completely standard and still has the original gearbox, engine and axles. Its three-liter diesel engine develops a modest 88bhp. I promise there will be a G-Class in the future, said Dr Dieter Zetsche, head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. Will there be more characters of Mr. Holtorfs ilk in the future I hope so.

Its not about me being remembered, Gunther insisted. I want Otto to be remembered, and so would my late wife. The car belongs in a museum. The car will continue to live thats what I want to see. Its not me thats special; its the car.

Nairaland GeneralJobless Man Sentenced For Stealing A Pot Of Soup In Lagos by paulabola(op): 4:27pm On Oct 27, 2014
Just imagine what hunger is doing to people in Nigeria; a rich country cursed with bad leaders:

A Somolu Magistrates Court in Lagos State on Monday sentenced a 28yrs old man, Abiodun Ojedokun to six days of community service for stealing a large pot of soup. The Magistrate, Mrs Bola Osunsanmi, sentenced the convict to 48 hours of community service for each of the three-count charge, after he had pleaded guilty to the offence.

Police say: "The accused connived with some others, now at large, to break into Mrs Gbadamosi Sannis shop at 2:00 a.m. They broke the locks and stole her large pot of soup, valued at N8,000."

The convict, arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing, pleaded guilty to all the charges preferred against him.

> Based on the facts of this case before this court, the confirmed report and your plea of leniency, I hereby sentence you to 48 hours community service on each of the counts of the charge, Magostrate Bola Osunsanmi ruled.

The prosecutor, ASP Akinlabi Adegoke, told the court that the convict, who was a casual worker and whose address was unknown, committed the offences on Sept. 20 at 2:00 a.m. at the Onipanu Model Market in Somolu, Lagos State.

The prosecutor told the court that the offences contravened Sections 285, 308 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Ojedokun pleaded guilty to the charges and asked for leniency, claiming that he committed the offence because he was starving. (NAN)
EducationSchool Will Allow Students To Pose With Guns In Yearbook Photos by paulabola(op): 12:18am On Oct 23, 2014
Students at a high school in Nebraska will now be allowed to pose with guns in their senior portraits.

The Broken Bow School Board made the decision to allow guns in school photos this week after a student asked to be photographed with a gun last year but was denied the option, according to local outlet KOLN-TV. The school board voted 6-0 to allow the guns in photos as long as the images are tasteful, the Omaha World-Herald reported.

Broken Bow Public Schools Superintendent Mark Sievering told the Omaha World-Herald that the school was initially afraid that allowing students to pose with guns would promote violence. However, the board decided to allow it because hunting is a big part of the local community.

The board, I believe, felt they wanted to give students who are involved in those kinds of things the opportunity to take a senior picture with their hobby, with their sport, just like anybody with any other hobby or sport, Sievering said, according to the Omaha World-Herald.

Students will not be allowed to be photographed brandishing the weapon or pointing it at the camera. If students do so, the photos will not be allowed to go in the school yearbook, according to the Associated Press.

The school board president, Ken Myers, noted that a lot of students in the district are involved in activities that use firearms, reports KOLN-TV.

We have the 1 Box Shooting Club, a great trap range and sporting clays range, Myers told KOLN-TV. A lot of youth are interested in that so that brings up firearms, I guess, a little bit more to the forefront along with the hunting.

In 2004, a student tried to sue his Vermont school after they refused to allow him to pose with a gun in his yearbook photo. A federal judge rejected the teens bid.

With the exception of groups like law enforcement personnel, Nebraska , Time noted. Nebraska does not have particularly strong gun laws overall, and it received a D in a 2013 report that analyzed gun laws in each state.

RomanceHow To Get Out Of The Friend Zone by paulabola(op): 12:07pm On Oct 16, 2014
Although no one really knows what it is, it seems like some people just can’t avoid it. Most of us, at some point in our lives, have a burning desire to be wanted (both physically and romantically) by another person, and being put in the “friend zone” is probably the most sincere, uncontrollable form of rejection that exists today. The catch is: It’s not an insult (or at least, an obvious one), but it’s also not an invitation to take the relationship to a new level. It’s somewhere in between “I think you’re really cool” and “I don’t like you like that…” but, for some odd reason, you’re usually entitled to many of the benefits that a best friend and/or boyfriend has privilege to, like innocent cuddling, sharing dark secrets or even watching them change in and out of clothes. And during this entire period of time, you can’t help but fall deeper and deeper in love with the person who you clearly have no chance with,So,how exactly do you get yourself out of the “friend zone?”
Well, you can’t. In fact, the “friend zone” doesn’t exist! It’s actually just the way another person perceives you based upon how you interact with them and how you appear to perceive your own self or worth. In addition, there are no set criteria to qualify for this bizarre yet transparent relationship status; ANYONE is capable of being “friend-zoned” by at least one other person in the world, no matter how confident or attractive they might be. And the reason is quite simple: When you consider the two main aspects involved in determining the “friend zone,” you’ll begin to notice that they’re never independent of each other. For example, let’s say you know for a fact that you’re both confident and attractive (not to be cocky, just hypothetically speaking.) You have a wide variety of options when it comes to engaging relationships with people, and you’ve also managed to develop a great amount of success that allows you the time and patience to pursue them all, if you so choose. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you won’t find yourself head over heels for someone else who’s in a similar situation; this will almost always change your approach with this particular individual, which will also affect your personal feelings and self-awareness. Maybe you’ll be even more confident or attractive, or maybe you’ll start to realize insecurities about yourself that you were never given an opportunity to experience before. If the conditions of your relationships change, there will always be a greater probability that the relationship itself will change. Instead of trying to find a way to “get out” of this type of relationship, focus more on further developing what you already have going on with that person. Not every relationship will produce that instant, fiery attraction that quickly evolves into trust and intimacy, but that’s okay! It’s just as likely that a person you’ve shown interest in will reciprocate those feelings as it is likely that they won’t. But you can improve your chances of success by creating awesome memories and holding back any expectations that might negatively influence the interaction/self-perception ratio mentioned earlier.Sometimes, there are obstacles in our lives that, unfortunately, distort our emotional vision and prevent the best relationships for us from forming. However, when your true feelings are invested in someone, the amount of time it takes for the ideal scenario to take place should not be a deal breaker. If you find yourself getting impatient because things aren’t moving as fast as you would like, that’s most likely a sign that it might not be the best situation for you. At the end of the day, great friendships are built on a kind of trust that helps most relationships last longer, so being in the “friend zone” isn’t a bad thing after all! Try not to rush love, continue striving to be yourself and I can assure you that what you’re looking for in others will, ironically, find you.

Nairaland GeneralBeggar Turned Millionaire Offers Passer-by Who Once Showed Him Kindness $160,000 by paulabola(op): 11:15pm On Oct 11, 2014
This heartwarming rags-to-riches story is guaranteed to restore your faith in humanity. A Chinese businessman who was once helped off the streets by a passerby, is now repaying the kindness by offering his benefactor a whopping one million yuan (over $160,000).

This story began in 1993, when 17-year-old He Rongfeng was forced to beg on the streets of Taizhou city in Chinas Zhejiang province, to support his poor family. Two friends and I had gone to Taizhou looking for work, but we were unsuccessful and ended up roaming the streets, penniless, starving, and without even shoes, Rongfeng recalled. We were in the pits and couldnt see a way out, and then this young woman turned up.

The woman was Dai Xingfen, who ran a local noodle shop with her husband. She took Rongfeng and his friends back to her modest one-room apartment and offered them food and a place to sleep. She gave them hot water to soothe their blistered feet, and then called a few acquaintances to find work for the boys in another city. Before they parted, she even gave them money for the train fare.

But the best thing she gave them was a bit of good advice: She said its okay not to have a lot of money, but always strive to be a good person, Rongfeng, now 38, recalls. And I have never forgotten that. Over the years, Rongfeng worked hard in the furniture business and became a successful entrepreneur in Shenyang city, Chinas Liaoning province. He is now the chairman of the Shenyang Jiu Jiu Li Feng Group.

But he never forgot about the woman who gave him his first break, and when he was wealthy enough, he decided to track her down. It wasnt hard for him to find Dais noodle house again he went to see her and offered her a large sum of money as a token of his gratitude. If it hadnt been for Dais kindness that day, 21 years ago, I wouldnt be where I am today, he said.

The meeting was a touching one, with both Dai and Rongfeng in tears. Rongfeng tried to offer her money, and even forced her to keep a few medicines and tonics. Modest Dai, however, refused his offer of riches. I couldnt possibly take his money as I didnt help him for that, said 45-year-old Dai. He has made me very contented and surprised by remembering me. But I cannot take the money. That was not the point.

So instead, Rongfeng gifted Dai a large plaque that reads: Gratitude as Heavy as a Mountain. Dai was quite happy with the plaque and called it a beautiful gesture.

Nairaland GeneralSecond Lunar Eclipse Of 2014 To Bring ‘blood Moon’ On October 8 by paulabola(op): 9:03pm On Oct 05, 2014
If youve been feeling a strong urge to howl lately, theres a reason why: A full blood moon is coming Oct. 8. Just check out the NASA video above.

All werewolf jokes aside, the total lunar eclipse will be the second and final blood moon of the year. It will be visible in the United States and Canada early Wednesday morning, with better viewing for those in the western part of the continent, as indicated in the map below.

The full eclipse will start at 6:25 a.m. EDT and last until 7:24 a.m, according to NASA.

Full lunar eclipses are because of the reddish tint they adopt as sunsets and sunrises seen from Earth reflect onto the surface of the moon.

Because this eclipse will happen two days after a lunar perigee, which is the point when the moon is nearest to Earth, NASA says the moon will appear 5.3 percent larger than the previous blood moon, which occurred on April 15.

This eclipse marks the second in a series of four lunar eclipses in a row, known as a tetrad. Well experience just eight tetrads this century, according to the Washington Post, and we wont experience the next tetrad until around 2032 or 2033.

Nairaland GeneralAye Dee: On Boko Haram’s Order Of Battle (OOB) by paulabola(op): 5:57pm On Sep 05, 2014
For folks who think Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad (Boko Haram) is not a formidable force, you’re wrong.

By my estimates, even prior to taking Bama the insurgents had about 50,000 people bearing arms. With Bama under BH control and forced conscription in what they consider their Emirate, their numbers have probably gone up significantly.

What follows is what I believe to be their Order of Battle is. For the record, some of the sources used to put this together are in the public domain while some are highly credible and my communication with them is and has been private.

So without further ado, Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad’s Order of Battle (OOB) seems to be:

Commencement: Artillery barrage to soften ‘the ground’ with captured Nigerian Army OTO Melara Mod 56′s 105 mm pack howitzers (very mobile units) and L16 81 mm mortars.

Not sure if there are specific instructions on how many rounds are to be fired or how long the barrage goes on for, but I think it depends on the territory BH is trying to control.

Other types of artillery weapons could also be used, but I have no evidence indicating they are. I also don’t know what BH inventory levels are, but I believe at least as few as 5 and as many as 30 of each type of artillery weapon.

First Wave: This comes immediately after the commencement of battle. Child soldiers and new “conscripts” go into battle as ‘shock troops’ to demoralize the enemy and take out first line of already shocked defenders. They are not battle hardened and are largely undisciplined, but they are zealous and gung ho.

These units comprise of infantry and motorized infantry. Their orders are to shoot anything that moves. It is usually at this point that the Nigerian military and paramilitary troops who didn’t flee the barrage at the commencement of battle flee.

These Boko Haram fighters use rifles that have been abandoned by Nigerian troops, therefore type and ammo varies. There are about 30,000 troops in this category (20,000 of whom are child soldiers), with a few as 100-1,000 deployed at a time.

Their motorized infantry vehicles are usually Toyota Hiluxes (seized from the Nigerian Army, many in Army colours) and other pick up trucks they’ve commandeered along the way.

_WHILE MANY OF THE TROOPS DEPLOYED BY BH IN THIS CATEGORY HAVE YEARS OF BATTLE EXPERIENCE, MOST AT THE VERY LEAST HAVE NUMEROUS BATTLES UNDER THEIR BELTS. THESE TROOPS INCLUDE NIGERIAN AND FOREIGN FIGHTERS, INCLUDING SUDANESE, CAMEROONIAN, CHADIANS, LIBYANS AND NIGERIENS. MANY OF THESE TROOPS ARE ALSO EX-MILITARY OR PARAMILITARY._

2nd Wave: Once first wave has gone through and cleared the area, more hardened/experienced troops come in to secure the area and eliminate any perceived stragglers from the Nigerian side or from the local population.

These troops are also regular infantry, although this is where BH deploys its mechanized infantry and MBTs (Main Battle Tanks). Mechanized infantry includes about 20-30 APCs such as the Streit Spartans, Mowag Piranhas and Otokar Cobras (all taken from Nigeria’s inventory) and 1 (possibly 2) Cadillac Gage Commandos (taken from Cameroon’s inventory).

The 3-4 MBTs deployed are the T54/55s and the Vickers MBT both from Nigeria’s arsenal. I am still unsure if the Tanks are seized at the site of battle and turned on Nigerian troops, seized at the site of battle and used mainly to intimidate without being deployed, or seized and brought in from wherever BH keeps them and used for battle.

While many of the troops deployed by BH in this category have years of battle experience, most at the very least have numerous battles under their belts. These troops include Nigerian and foreign fighters, including Sudanese, Cameroonian, Chadians, Libyans and Nigeriens. Many of these troops are also ex-military or paramilitary.

Incidentally, these are the infantry troops armed with the heavy duty weapons that most associate with Boko Haram, the ones that are usually seen in Shekau’s videos.

Their firearms include the 40mm RPG-7, the 7.62mm FN Mag machine gun, the 12.7×99mm M-2 Browning and the 105mm M40 recoilless rifle. Previous stock such as the M40 came from Libya following the anti-Gadaffi uprising, but current inventory for both arms and ammunition comes from Nigerian
military stock.

The leadership cadre of this group comes from what used to be Harakatul-Muhajiriina Wal- Mujahidiin, a group that was brought under Shekau’s Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad when he consolidated his authority earlier this year. Khalid Al-Barnawi has operational control. These troops also have military advisers sent in by Al-Baghdadi’s Islamic State.

As an aside, this is interesting because Khalid Al-Barnawi used to lead Jamāʿatu Anṣāril Muslimīna fī Bilādis Sūdān (Ansaru) an organization closely affiliated with AQIM. When Shekau decided to eliminate Ansaru’s leadership and started doing so, Al-Barnawi fearing for his life begged AQIM to intervene on his behalf. They did this and, now he’s part of BH’s Shura again.

Also, while I’ve never been to a BH vs. Nigeria Army battle, the oft repeated line that Nigeria’s troops are under-equipped is one I personally don’t agree with. The bulk of Boko Haram’s inventory comes from Nigerian stock.

What BH does have is offensive capability in having more people, shock value in launching surprise attacks and fanatics willing to die for their cause.

What Nigeria lacks is sufficient mechanized infantry (motorized infantry is the order of the day) units, ineffective (expired) body armour, expired and insufficient ammunition, and morale busters such as expecting injured troops to take care of themselves and mass burials for killed troops.

Science/TechnologyAustralian Inventors Create ‘hydrophobic’ T-shirt That Repels Water And Dirtthre by paulabola(op): 12:14am On Aug 08, 2014
A Melbourne-based clothing and technology company, has created a special t-shirt that could very well revolutionize the garment industry. Their new line of 100 percent cotton t-shirts , calledThe Cavalier, are made of a material that repels both water and dirt. The highly resilient garments have been put through a range of tests, and miraculously, theyve passed every single one.

Pour a cup of water on these babies and theyll remain dry as a bone. Splash Cola or Gatorade directly on to them and all that colored liquid simply beads up and rolls off the fabric. Hose them down with a high pressure stream and they still wont hold a drop of water. It sounds like magic, but its all pure science.

The technology used to create these shirts is an extreme form of water-proofing that involves modifying the fundamental nature of surfaces, making them super-hydrophobic. The company website states: Our shirts emulate the natural hydrophobic properties of the lotus leaf. Instead of getting absorbed by the fabric, liquids just form into droplets that slide off of it.

According to Lewis Pitchford of Threadsmiths, the cotton fibers of the shirt are woven with a new water-fearing nanoparticle technology. Unlike other shirts that are simply coated with hydrophobic sprays that last for only a few washes, the Cavalier shirts will repel water for up to 80 washes.

Most people are pretty amazed when they see it, said Pitchford. The Cavalier shirt contains no aerosol applications and no dangerous chemicals, and is completely safe to wear as a shirt should be, the Threadsmiths website states. And if any other residue is left on the material, it can be removed by simply wiping or rinsing it off with water.

The company is presently taking orders for the white version of the T-shirt theyre available for men and women at $65 a piece. At the moment weve got only T-shirts, but were open to suggestions about what else to make, Pitchford added. It could have application for kids clothes and other garments.

The Cavalier definitely sounds like an impressive invention, but its not the first hydrophobic t-shirt ever made. Last year, we wrote about a San Francisco-based student who started a Kickstarter campaign for theperfect hydrophobic Silic shirt. A bit of competition in this new sector cant hurt, though.

PoliticsChibok Girls Turn Bombers: This Is Worse Than Death by paulabola(op): 6:24pm On Aug 06, 2014
Source told Vanguard news that our Chibok daughters were now successfully hypnotized and had become Chibok bombers. That is in the news today. A Military spokesperson had recently failed to deny this horrific possibility. DailyMail of UK in their publication yesterday also highlighted these fears.

So, it is possible that our Chibok 234 are now being employed as s*****e bombers; killers who have not just been abandoned by us for dead, but worse yet have been abandoned by us to be indoctrinated into messengers of death.

While the President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele (not Ebola as many are beginning to percolate) Jonathan was sleeping and dancing, things have surpassed our worst fears. We said the girls were as good as dead already; now they may be worse than dead. Jonathan said he could not hurry to bring back our girls, because he did not want them to die in the process. Really We told him to quit the BS already.
#BringBackOurGirls, dead or alive! He left the girls and left Boko Haram; and even if our best hopes that these s*****e bombers are not our Chibok girls, they are our girls and as he leaves Boko Haram intact, they ARE recruiting our other girls, forcefully strapping them with bombs and sending them forth. While he waits, Boko Haram is bombing up our Churches and Mosques, massacring our farmers and blowing up our bridges as they spread West and South, marking up more territory from Nigeria for their evil nation.

These happenings are not unusual. These are things that were clear to predict. This is why we marched, we wrote and we swore.

If you did not read my #BringBackOurGirls: 100 Days In Captivity, I suggest you do. Permit me to re-present these portions from the sixth and ninth weeks:

By the sixth ten days, we were angry. These were the angry days. These were the bitter days. By these ten days, something had changed. We hated the world, we hated ourselves. Some of us asked to be taken on terror missions. Some of us wanted to go out and kill. We had completely lost faith in ourselves and in the world around us. Some of us still had faith in God, but frankly, some of us just did not any more. Our captors saw this in us. They commented that we had become more deadly than them. Our conversations were cold. We laughed when they talked about their campaigns of carnage. We discussed life with them; we discussed their plans with them. We discussed death with them.

By the ninth ten days, we spent a lot of time praying for our parents. We spent a lot of time praying for you. We felt empathy no, pity actually for you in the world outside. You see, our fate was pretty simply laid out. We had done what we could, considering our predicament. We had been brave and fought the terrorists; some of us were killed trying. We had negotiated with them. Our destiny was determined, harsh, but circumscribed.

But how are you How is your world Your world full of wickedness, corruption and politics. How do you sleep at night By these ninth ten days, we wished not to return to your wicked world a world where you could abandon your children in the forests with very very bad men and were able to sleep at night, able to go to work the next mooring, to eat, drink, have sx, laugh and play, purchase nonsenses: a world where you could do and did nothing; a world where you could feel and felt nothing; a world where you could choose and chose nothing. You made these men. You made this world. You created this terror and you left it this way, afraid, unable or unwilling to do anything about it. Boko Haram was your reward. We felt empathy for you, who could live with yourselves knowing what you had created and that you failed for 90 days to come here and fight or die fighting to rescue your children. In these ten days we prayed for you and for Boko Haram. We prayed for the world

Indeed it was clear to us that this abandonment, this curse will bring upon this nation more horrific punishment, as is the nature of life.

We told Jonathan from the first weeks that he should give us civilian patriots including ex-service men, youth, hunters and vigilantes the right to bear arms so we go into Sambisa and rescue and destroy a mission our army has been too screwed up, thanks to systemic and executive corruption, to carry out. Jonathan loudly ignored us.

We told Jonathan to forget his cheap excuse of not wanting the girls lives to be risked and send in what troops he has; he danced and campaigned for 2015.

We told Jonathan in the first weeks of the abduction, that is the Chibok parents so chose, he should swap non combatant Boko Haram prisoners (who had no blood or r**e on their hands) for the abducted girls, he rather abandoned the families till the great Malala came, and after she directed him to see them in Abuja, he rather bribed them with N100m to forget their daughters and be quiet.

So Nigeria continues to live the curse. We continue to be plagued by this virus, worse and more deadly than Ebola. For Ebola leaves at least 10% of its victims alive, however this E**** virus does not only kill its victims, but also turns them into death machines.

After every hardship there is a time of respite and ease. So He has promised. Soon this noisome era in Nigeria's history shall pass some months, maybe years, but soon it will surely pass and we will have life again and be emancipated from this death spewing virus of corruption.

May the good and kind Lord have mercy on the Chibok girls and on us.

Nairaland GeneralPicking The Perfect Thank You Gift by paulabola(op): 10:42pm On Aug 04, 2014
All of us face the imposing task of picking a thoughtful and impressive thank you gift for friends and relatives. The challenge is always picking the right gift to express our thanks and still make it personal enough to have meaning. There are a wide variety of options when it comes to thank you gifts including gift baskets, gift cards, and other more focused gift ideas. It all comes down to choosing the right one.

The first thing to do when selecting a thank you gift is to consider the person you are thanking. Think long and hard about their likes and especially dislikes. Does he/she enjoy perfume, or hate it. Does he/she read a particular magazine that you might be able to get her a subscription for Do you enjoy dinners out together. Then maybe a gift card from a favorite restaurant will do the trick. The key here is to make it personal. This says to the person you are giving the thank you gift to, I appreciate what you did for me and thought about how best to thank you.

Another possible thank you gift that might be perfect is a specialized thank you gift basket. Over the years these thank you gift baskets have evolved from the old popcorn and pretzels baskets into very stylish and specific theme orientated gifts. Is this gift for an avid golfer, or a rabid fan of a sports team Or maybe they enjoy a particular TV show, or musical group. There are gift baskets to cater to all of these hobbies nowadays and in a wide range of price points. Most of these can be customized to accommodate special dietary needs like no chocolate or peanuts.

Some of the most heartfelt thank you gifts you can give are handmade tokens of appreciation. Sometimes they are as simple as favorite baked goods like cookies or an apple pie. Or if youre a skilled hobbyist, maybe a knit scarf or handmade item. It can be very touching to the person getting the gift, knowing that you had spent time thinking about what they liked to eat or wear and took time out of your day to prepare the gift.

If you dont know the person quite as well, you could always surf the web and pick a more generic thank you gift that is either topical, or timeless. There are loads of websites that cater to the latest craze or season and have gifts related to them that can bring a smile to anyones face. Some of these things might involve customized mugs or t-shirts for the person you are thanking. This is especially nice since these thank you gifts will be used again and again for some time, reminding the person you thanked how much you cared.

Finally, the simplest thank you gift might be the best. Sitting down and writing a heartfelt thank you note on some high quality paper is always a very nice gift to receive. Do this as a handwritten note to make it more personal. Somehow getting a letter from someone typed out on a computer doesnt quite do the trick, so take some time and care with the note. Also, there are a plethora of websites that offer sample verse or poems that will help you get started.

The possibilities for thank you gifts today are unlimited and really run the gamut from a simple tchotchke to elaborate personal gift baskets. The real key is to pick something personal that reflects the person you are trying to thank. They will appreciate the time and thought you put into the gift for years to come.
