American cockroach


It’s no wonder that homeowners have such a difficult time catching cockroaches. The American cockroach has been clocked at running 3.4 mph, which is about 50 body lengths per second. That’s comparable to a person running 210 mph. A factor that points at their survivability over the years.

Wind scorpion


The wind scorpion is not a true scorpion, but instead is an arachnid related to spiders, mites, ticks and actual scorpions. The wind scorpion runs at about 10 mph, which is several dozen body lengths per second.

The mite knocked the Australian tiger beetle out of the number one spot. According to Rubin and his adviser Jonathan Wright, who is a professor of biology at Pomona College, the Australian tiger beetle tops out at 171 body lengths per second. That’s over 22 times the speed of former Olympic sprinter Michael Johnson

Mighty mite
The mite Paratarsotomusmacropalpis, usually not bigger than a sesame seed, was recently recorded running at up to 322 body lengths per second, a measure of speed that reflects how quickly an animal moves relative to its body size.

Extrapolated to the size of a human, the mite’s speed is equivalent to a person running roughly 1,300 miles per hour. The findings were presented at the Experimental Biology 2014 meeting in San Diego.

“It’s so cool to discover something that’s faster than anything else, and just to imagine, as a human, going that fast compared to your body length is really amazing,” project leader Samuel Rubin.

Of course like anyone reading this article I was stunned to discover that the animal that was dubbed the king of speed have been dethroned, giving the top ten fastest land animals a new look. I remember when i used to think the lion was the king of speed and that its the worst carnivore to run away from. Although there are number of apps out there that can do this. I personally prefer Musixmatch. Apart from showing lyrics while playing music with the Musixmatch app, it displays lyrics with the generic android music player too.At the time of publishing this article the Musixmatch app is one of the editor’s choice app on Play store. 1. How Butter & Margarine Are Made

Butter is made from cream which rises to the top of milk if it sits for a period of time. The process involves churning the cream, a chemical reaction takes place which makes the cream begin to solidify. It is not as simple as this but I do not want to bring in all the jibber jabber that are actually useless to you.

Margarine on the other hand is made from solidification of vegetable oil in the presence of a catalyst through a process called hydrogenation. The solidifying process begins when hydrogen is bubbled through the vegetable oil (liquid) at a high temperature and in the presence of a catalyst to solidify it.

The police is your friend - words of the past, it seems. Today, the police are more about terrorising, bullying and killing for no reason. That Nigerian policemen are out of control is like saying ‘Ijebu garri’ is sour. Some believe that there are still good policemen out there, and I used to admit that quite often, but never again. Well, maybe there are still good policemen out there, doing their job of protecting and serving their pockets every day. The biggest problem is, no one is doing anything about it, even the government.Hardly a day passes by without stories of a police officer shooting a ‘danfo’ driver because of N50, police terrorising people on the street and asking for receipts for everything, even for the Agege bread in your bag, pulling off people’s vehicle plate numbers for whatever accusations they could conjure up. The crazy thing is that they always try to justify their senseless actions. A prime example of how the police are out of control is how they quickly jump into your car even before you disobey traffic regulations. The police have seemingly abandoned the ideal of protecting and serving for beating the shit out of you, killing, lying and so on. Maybe their new motto ought to be, “protecting and serving the shit out of you.”

Solving the police misconduct problem is simple. Many of these people are power-hungry individuals who get off on having too much power, which leads into them abusing the powers they get when they become police officers. Simply weed out these people in the recruiting process. Don’t just tell us you do it, do it actually.
And if the Police Force is already doing it, step it up a bit - it’s obviously not working very well. Oh, and if they get past all of that, when they do something completely out of line, don’t let them come back to the job.

Second, there should be real accountability. In a lot of these lawsuits against the police, guess who ends up paying the price for them? The taxpayers. I guarantee there would be a lot less police misconduct if police officers have to face real consequences and have to pay large fines.Someone needs to police the police. Chances are you may think having another government organisation watch over them is a wonderful idea. WRONG! Having government watch over government has obvious issues. The people need to keep an eye on the police, and let their superiors know about misconduct. Got video of police misconduct? Post it. Share it with the world.

Do whatever possible to get the word out about your experience with police misconduct. Video evidence is key to exposing police misconduct. Let the government know, because we still have some power in government, but we have to utilise it! Yes, I know this already occurs, but it needs to happen on a much larger scale. Most of us don’t have the time to do it, but we need to make the time to do it.The police work for the people in the end, so maybe it’s time the people kept a closer eye on them, instead of brushing off stories of police misconduct. Hey, but before you bring out your camera phone to take a picture or make a video, make sure the police isn’t aware because if you are taking a selfie around Nigerian police officers, they become apprehensive and demand to see what you are doing with your phone or camera as the case may be.
Third, STOP GIVING THEM MORE POWER! Giving an out-of-control system more power has so much potential to be a disaster. Yes, in rare cases it could help, but most of these weapons don’t belong in the hands of the police, especially when they are on the street and not on any official duty. You see a police officer walk into a beer parlor to booze with his gun cocked and ready to shoot. Most of the police weapons we see these days are made for war, they don’t belong on the streets. A visitor coming into the country would think we are at war because there are too many drunk police officers carrying guns about.Here’s a statistic that should get you thinking: Hundreds of soldiers have been killed in the war against Boko Haram. The number of innocent Nigerians killed by policemen yearly is in the thousands. Oh, the terrorists that the government is always telling us are so dangerous have killed fewer people than the police? Let’s get this straight. You are more likely to be killed by a police officer than terrorists in Nigeria. The number of people killed in the Biafra war is lower than the number killed by the police in the last decade. Sounds like something might be wrong yet?The way I see things, we have a huge problem. The Police are out of control, they do what they want and get away with too much. A uniform and a gun seem to give them way too much power. Things must “CHANGE!” Some may disagree with me, criticise me for my views, but what I discussed above is the way I see things. My solutions may not completely solve the problem, but I believe they could create a huge dent in the problem. It would be a huge step in the right direction. An 11-year old girl with intellectual and learning disabilities who was raped and became pregnant has indicated that she wants to keep the child.

The unnamed Uruguayan girl is currently 16 weeks pregnant and, according to doctors and sources close to her family, she dreams of raising the baby with her attacker.
The girl was allegedly raped by the 41-year-old grandfather of her half-sister, who was visiting the family in its Montevideo home. He has been detained and will be prosecuted for rape, Uruguayan officials told Agence France-Presse.

In Uruguay, abortion is legal up to 12 weeks of gestation and 14 weeks in the case of rape, but medical reports indicate that the girl does not have the capacity to understand the consequences of pregnancy and motherhood.

"Although the legal deadline for abortion has been exceeded, if we determine that the pregnancy endangers her health, judicial authorization could be granted," Marisa Lindner, director of Uruguay's Child and Adolescent Institute (INAU), told a press conference.

The hospital has said the girl is in good health and under medical supervision, and Monica Silva, director of INAU's health division, told La Diaria newspaper that "there is no risk of life for the girl or baby, so we cannot make her have an abortion."

The Uruguayan case comes soon after a similar incident in neighboring Paraguay, in which a 10-year-old was raped and impregnated by her stepfather. Paraguays health minister blocked the girl from getting an abortion because the countrys constitution forbids the procedure unless the mother's life is in danger.

Coca-Cola announced on April 23, 1985 that it would discontinue its beloved Coca-Cola in favor of a new product that millions derisively called “New Coke.” The experiment did not last very long.New Coke was a disaster from the start.

It came across to many as an irrational reaction to the surge in sales of Pepsi-Cola.

Pepsi was enjoying popularity after successful marketing campaigns such as the "taste test challenge" and “Choice of a New Generation” featuring stars like singer Michael Jackson. 

Coca-Cola was 99-years-old at the time. The company told the media it was adjusting its formula for modern tastebuds. New Coke beat Pepsi in a battery of taste tests, executives insisted. 

Author Constance L. Hays who wrote “The Real Thing: Truth and Power at the Coca-Cola Company,” found what may have been the real motivation behind the change.

“The new formula would save Coke about $50 million per year because it cut back on some of the most costly ingredients,” a group of Pepsi chemists told Hays. “Coke turned its back on the very thing that made it great.”

New Coke was sweeter and lighter, according to a Time magazine review written by food critic Mimi Sheraton.

“New Coke seems to retain the essential character of the original version … It tastes a little like classic Coca-Cola that has been diluted by melting ice,” Sheraton explained. 

Late night host David Letterman joked: “Coke’s decided to make their formula sweeter, they’re going to mix it with Pepsi.”

Coke drinkers formed various groups in protest. They called Coca-Cola and sent letters.

“Coke drinkers rose up in righteous indignation, demanding their old soft drink back,” author Hays wrote in her book, which many consider to be the authoritative account of the Coke II/New Coke debacle. 

The company to brought back the original Coke less than three months later. News of the about-face came from ABC anchor Peter Jennings, who interrupted the long-running daytime soap opera "General Hospital" to break the story. 

Original Coke was called Coca-Cola Classic while New Coke kicked around in various forms, including Coke II, until it was ultimately killed off in 2002.

A Taiwanese, Chen Hongzhi, 25, from Hsinchu county, is suffering a unique condition,he can't remember anything for more than five minutes. The young man literally has to start his life from scratch every day. But in order to surmount the challenge, Hongzhi writes down every single thing about himself in a diary so that he can remain in touch with everything around him.

Hongzhi’s amnesia is the result of a serious head injury sustained during a car accident when he was 17. After spending months in intensive care, his body finally recovered but the span of his memory was reduced to only five minutes. This has sadly left him forgetting everything in the space of five minutes.

According to Daily Mail UK, when the 25-year-old wakes up every morning, his mother, Wang Miao-chiong, reminds him that he is no longer 17 before handing him his notebook so that he can catch up on everything that has happened since the accident.

“This is my record, I write in it every day, even if it is pouring down with rain or if I don’t go out to do the weeding I still must write, ‘Heavy rain,’” he said. “Whenever I get home from any time away I quickly grab my notebook and write down important things from the day – who I’ve met, what I’ve done, how much money I got from recycling bottles, all that sort of stuff.”

Miao-chiong, who is now 60 years old, says that the system they’ve established is working pretty well. Although Hongzhi’s condition makes it impossible for him to get a job, the family is able to get by on donations from neighbours and friends.
