HealthRe: Trying To Conceive A Child? TTC by pearlworth: 8:24am On Aug 13, 2015
“And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth”

Genesis 1 v. 28 (KJV)

Dear Child,

Let me start by saying, “I know”. I know how much it hurts. I know how the phrase, “Be fruitful and Multiply” haunts you every second you have to wait for the fruit of the womb. I know you feel like a failure every time you see the single pink line on the pregnancy test, the failed IUI/IVF, the miscarriage, the stillborn babies, early infant deaths, you feel incomplete, incompetent and incapable.

I know when you ask, “how hard can it be to be fruitful and multiply?” I know how many times you lose your cool and ask me, “Why me?” I know how many times you felt like a lesser human being – lesser than the plants and animals who reproduce with ease. I know how many times you had to put on your “game face” and appear put together in the midst of people, even though on the inside, you were scattered, scared and ashamed.

Darling, put all those feelings aside, feelings do not represent the truth. The truth is, you are built to be Fruitful. To multiply. To Dominate and Subdue the earth. I placed my creative ability in Adam, who represents all mankind – male and female, including you. I was conscious when I said there shall be none barren amongst you. Yes, it means that you are not barren - so stop referring to yourself as such.

I assure you, you have all it takes to meet my commandment, do not fret my Child. I made you in my image and you have the capacity to do exploits, you do not have an excuse to fail! You may face challenges (or delays) in achieving exploits, but you are not incapable or handicapped. Remember, the earth was dark and without form when I created everything you see now.

I have empowered you to be fruitful and to multiply. This is the truth, irrespective of what the doctors, the tests or even your accusers have told you. I need you to walk in acknowledgment of this truth and defy all obstacles on your way. Work in the knowledge that you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Stop putting on your game face, put on your God personality and make something out of (seemingly) nothing. You have what it takes. Do not give up. Don’t throw in the towel. Do not get weary. Strengthen yourself in my joy. Go ahead and expand your territory, for fruitful you are and multiply you will.

I remain the same, the Unchangeable Changer,
Your Creator!

Note – I hope this letter brings strength and succour in trying times, when you are experiencing delay in childbirth. God remains your comforter.

Business7 Interesting Facts About The 2014 Pension Reform Act by pearlworth(op): 11:13am On Aug 11, 2014
The first Pension Reform Act was enacted in 2004 (the “2004 Act”) by the Obasanjo government to address the chaos and abnormalities in the existing pension arrangements where there were unfunded pension schemes, delays in pension payments and other financial malpractices which hampered the success of the pension scheme.

Ten years later and on July 1, 2014, President Goodluck Jonathan repealed the existing Pension Reform Act and replaced it with the 2014 Pension Reform Act (the “2014 Act”). As an SME/start-up owner, the first questions on your mind will most likely be – “How does this recent law affect my business?” “Do I have more financial obligations?”, “What are my rights? obligations? duties?”

To answer these questions and enlighten you on the new Act, we have listed 10 provisions of the Act that should be of interest to you as an SME owner:

1. Too soon? Too quick?

The 2014 Act does not state the date of commencement. However, considering that the 2004 Act was repealed with immediate effect, the date of commencement will be the day it is signed into law. This means that as of July 1, 2014, the provisions of the 2014 Act will take effect.

As an employer who has been contributing under the 2004 Act and you have up to 5, but less than 15 employees, this means that you are no longer obliged to contribute to the scheme. What then happens to the employees already registered on the scheme? Do I stop their contributions abruptly? A lot will depend on your employee handbook (if any). Also, such employees may, continue with the scheme, but in accordance with the guidelines issued by the National Pension Commission (“Commission”).

2. I have few employees, do I still have to contribute to the scheme?

If you have less than 15 employees, you are not obliged to be part of the scheme, where however, you have less than 3 employees or you are self-employed, you can voluntarily join the pensions scheme.

This is a deviation from the existing law which makes it mandatory for employers with 5 or more employees to join the scheme. This was previously a huge burden for SMEs/start-ups that were still trying to get established and stabilize financially. The new amendment is definitely good news for SMEs and start-ups with less than 15 employees.

3. What is my contribution liability?

You are now liable contribute a minimum of 10% of the each employee’s total monthly emolument (unlike the 2004 Act which was restricted to basic salary, housing allowance and transport allowance). Employees on the other hand are to contribute 8% of their total emoluments.

4. Can I make additional contributions to my RSA?

Employees are allowed to make voluntary contributions, Thus, in addition to the 10% (employer) + 8% (employee) contribution, one can opt to make additional voluntary contribution. Though not specifically stated, but as the business owner (and invariably, the No.1 employee of your business), you can also opt to invest some of your plough-back profit in your retirement days.

5. Can I withdraw from my RSA before I turn 50 years?

Withdrawals can be made from the RSA before the stipulated retirement age! This provision applies to an employee who disengages (which will include resignation) or is disengaged (through summary dismissal, termination of employment, redundancy etc). Such person can, with the approval of the Commission, withdraw up to 25% of savings, where the person will not gain employment for the next 4 months.

This may constitute a good source of funds for an employee-cum-budding entrepreneur as you are now able to withdraw from your RSA (subject to approval) and use the funds to kick-start your business (without worrying about interest rates and other repayment terms)

6. Do not attempt to commit an offence under the 2014 Act!

Be careful not to commit (much less, attempt to commit) any offence under the Act. The penalties for committing any offence under the Act will attract the same penalty as attempting to commit the offence.

One will think that there should be a lesser punishment for attempting to commit an offence, but, it is believed that this provision was included in order to discourage persons from attempting to commit, much less commit an offence under the PRA.

7. Dispute Resolution v. Criminal Prosecution.

The Act prescribes different methods for addressing disputes and for prosecuting offences. Offences are prosecuted in a court of competent jurisdiction, whilst civil disputes are first referred to the Commission, if it is not resolved, it is then referred to Arbitration and the arbitral award can be enforced in court.

This difference is probably due to the fact that criminal offences can only be tried in a court of law, while civil disputes may be resolved using alternative methods.

BusinessBusiness Intelligence For Budding Entrepreneurs And Start-up Owners by pearlworth(op): 9:10am On Jul 22, 2014
I had the utmost pleasure of speaking to a group of young people on Business Intelligence earlier this month. It was very eventful for me as I had the rare opportunity to speak to eager and intelligent youth on “Business Intelligence: Maximising Opportunities for Sustainable Growth”. The highpoint of my day was when I received a bunch of questions from these youth. The questions demonstrated that the youth had not only listened to all I had said, they had tried to apply what I had said to their peculiar situations (brilliant guys, aren't they?) and were seeking answers to the knots and challenges they encountered in the process of assimilating.

I have decided to share the questions asked by the youth and my simple, practical answers given to them. I believe that the answers will help a business owner/(budding) entrepreneur. Here goes:

1. As a young man intending to do business but has no funds, what can I do? You said we should not borrow, is it wrong to approach banks for loan?

(I actually didn't specifically say that one should not borrow, but I said the Bible does not encourage Christians to borrow)

For most businesses, you really do not have to borrow in order to get capital. Rather, you should focus on starting small, thinking big and growing fast. There are other alternatives to raising capital, such as getting investors, savings, plough-back profits etc. You should focus on reducing costs, including the interest on loans taken.

Where however, it is absolutely necessary to borrow, then, it is best to look for loans with zero or minimal interest rates. The interests are a cost to your business operations that you can avoid or mitigate. Loans can be taken from family, friends, colleagues, employers at no interest (at least, in Nigeria). You can also consider loans from microfinance banks or moneylenders whose interest rates are lower than commercial banks’ lending rate which is in the range of 24%- 28%.

2. If you intend to start a business that has not been done before and you are worried that your idea might be stolen. What can you do?

The law contains provisions that protect novel ideas and interventions. However, if your idea does not fall within the scope of these intellectual property rights, you can ensure that a non-disclosure agreement is signed with the person/organization you are about to share your idea with.

3. How can a budding comedian present himself and create opportunities?

With respect to appearance, what you sell as a comedian is laughter. The best way to present yourself as a comedian is to look funny. Once you see Mr. Ibu, your first reaction is to laugh. He has caught your attention without saying a word. The same goes for you as a comedian, work on your mien such that people find humour in your presentation.

To create opportunities for yourself, you must remain prepared. Always be prepared. You must be a strategic and creative thinker. Volunteer to do comedy skits where people are gathered. Volunteer to present jokes at weddings, children parties, church events etc. There are radio shows that allow callers to say what is on their mind, use the opportunity to share a joke every day until you become a household name. Compete in talent shows. Remember, any social gathering of people is an opportunity to publicise your talents.

4. When maximizing opportunities, to what extent can one take risks?

Risks are a crucial part of running a business. As an entrepreneur, you must take risks in order to grow your business. However, you have to take informed risks. Do research. Do a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis, a Cost-Benefit Analysis etc, to ensure that it is a risk worth taking.

Create possible scenarios on the risk you are taking and make plans on how to mitigate the negative effects of the risks you are taking. Where possible, take out insurance policies for indemnification in the occurrence of the risk.

It is acceptable to take risks in business, but only when the risks are calculated.

5. Is it professional to sell your products at a bus-stop or in an open market?

Whilst location is important to the success in a business, it is not unprofessional to sell your products at a bus-stop or open market, if your products will sell there.

Professionalism depends more on the manner in which you carry out your business and treat your customers. You can distinguish yourself as a puff-puff seller by maintaining a clean workspace, wearing a clean apron or even wearing a suit! Treat your customers with courtesy and in a professional manner and you will be seen as different, despite the location of your business.

A good example is SLOT. SLOT is now a brand name for buying standard phones. However, SLOT started in computer village, an open market where phones, laptops and other ICT gadgets/accessories are sold and is notorious for selling sub-standard/counterfeit products. SLOT distinguished itself by selling original products at competitive prices. Now SLOT has braches all over Nigeria and in the highbrow areas of Lagos.

Your location does not determine the professionalism of your business, your mode of operation does.

6. I have an opportunity to establish a small business, but there is no space, what can I do?

You first have to ask yourself, “Do I REALLY need space to operate my business?” I once spoke with a young entrepreneur who wanted to run a “pure water” (pure water is what Nigerians call drinking water in a sachet) production, but claimed he could not because he could not afford to buy land.

If you are sure you need space, then you have to think creatively. “Can I use a space in my house?” “Is there an office/shop where I can share in the meantime?” “Is there some other way I can get space without spending too much?”

While doing all these, bear in mind that this is not your final destination, remain focused the big picture and plough-back your profits into getting the space you need.

7. Is there anything like a second opportunity or second chance?

Yes, there is. But like first opportunities, they are scarce. Therefore, you must train yourself to make the best of first chances and opportunities. You may get a second chance, but it is highly unlikely and even if you do, you will have lost a lot of time & progress waiting for your next opportunity.

On a final note, opportunities are the lifeline of business growth and you must learn to make the best of them.

BusinessRe: What Kind Of Business Can I Do? Read And Help Plz by pearlworth: 7:36am On Dec 06, 2013
@OP. Businesses are no longer built based on what appears to be popular, but on two things- customer demands and passion.

The former takes priority as you need customers for your biz to grow. Conduct a market research and identify consumer needs.

Your passion is what will sustain you in the business when it takes a nosedive. Its your water in the desert. You need to align what you are passionate about with customer needs to develop a business line.

If they don't align, find one of the customer needs you gave good knowledge about or you can gather information on and work on starting your biz.

On a final note, you need to take life more seriously. From all the things you mentioned above, Itd clear you need to get more focused and you will succeed.

FamilyRe: What A Wife!!! by pearlworth: 7:12pm On Nov 28, 2013
@op.your marriage is still young and at teething stage. You are both still learning about and understanding each other. Just as you are learning to become the husband she needs, she is also learning to be your wife.

Having said that, you need to love her. Love here is an action word and it covers all things. if she's not listening to you, correct her in love and watch her change. She will begin to feel odd if you treat her well and she is misbehaving.

God will help you.... but don't throw in the towel. Shalom.
BusinessRe: Business Incorporation by pearlworth: 6:56pm On Nov 28, 2013
Ogeam: I am planning incorporating my business but have some difficulty in deciding what type it should be. By profession I am technical and does not have much knowledge in business domain. Please what are the possible business types that can be registered (e.g enterprise, plc, llt, etc) and what are the strengths and disadvantages of each one.
The type of company you register will depend on a lot of factors, majorly the type of business you intend to do and the structure of your business. What kind of business do you want to do?
I started a thread on a similar issue, you may wish to read it

AXYZ: While thanking you for yesterday's, I think it's apt i revert.
2. I conveyed to her your advice as regards 'Q7'. She's adamant she wouldnt want the baby to be born outside marriage and that she wouldnt mind to face the resultant mess arising from the plea for divorce.
3. The issue now is that speedy divorce is not guaranteed as you'd professionally advised even after facing the mess.
4. Thank you "De Law"!
Hello AXYZ. Once again, its a pleasure to be of help. Thanks too for your comment on my blog.

She shouldn't forget that it is not only the shame, she will be committing an offence of bigamy. If for any wierd reason, she is prosecuted, can she handle being away from her husband or child? She should also consider this carefully.

Apologies if I sound rash, but I can't comprehend it, if she knew she did not want a child out of wedlock, why did she engage in activities that can result in pregnancy?

She should know, that whatever marriage she does now, unless the first marriage wasn't a 'court marriage', is a nullity and technically, that child will be as good as born out of wedlock.

As an aside, I percieve that something is wrong. Why is she so desperate to get married? Why is she in a hurry? She needs to take a deep breath and ask herself these questions, before she jumps into another marriage hurriedly and start looking for another way out.
