@ADEX70 Well let me jump in and answer you quickly… How many hours per day will you have the TV, fan and light bulbs on for? The number of hours of usage of each device is extremely important. For example, If  I assume the following:

2 TV @ 240W for 6 hours per Day=1440Wh
4 Fans @ 160W for 12 hours per day=1920Wh
3 Lights @40Ws for 12 hours per day=480Wh

This will be a total 3840 so let just say 4000Wh.

Battery Bank using 12V battery
(Total Load x Days of Storage) / (System Voltage x Efficiency after system losses)
4000X1day/12X0.8 = 417Ah.

Depending on how much you want to spend you have two options,
Two MK Battery, Sealed Gel, 12V, 225Ah, Size 8D, 8G8DLTP-DEKA N208 000
Three Surrette & Rolls 12V deep cycle batteries 2@ 200Ah and 1@80Ah  for N136000

Solar Panels
Array Size (Wp) = Daily energy requirement in Watt Hours [Wp] / Average Daily PEAK SUN HOURS in the design month / System Effeciency.

Array Size = [4000Wh] /4 / 0.75
Array Size = 1333Watts

Your cheapest option will be to use 5 Canadian solar panel 295W PV Module 263.6W PTC panels. N370000

Inverter: Xantrex, Trace 1500W, Off Grid, 12VDC 230 VAC, 50 Hz, -N120000

Charger controller: Outback, FM60-150VDC MPPT Charge Controller, 60A- N106000

Total Cost: N732 000(using the cheap battery option including all cables and connectors breakers, lighting arrestor and disconnects)

I assumed 4hours of sunlight all year wrong, I assumed a 0.75 system efficiency and choose the smallest inverter you can use. The batteries are only going to provide you with 1 day of back up. These are brand new parts, If money is an issue, you could try starting small with second hand batteries different brand inverters and a square wave charge controller.
Hope this helps
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by pecorns: 5:32pm On Jan 04, 2012
While the removal of fuel subsidy has a negative impart for lots of people for Solar and backup power, it is good fantastics news for renewable energy I have to say, people who have 8KVA generators that uses 180 liters of fuel per week used to pay N700 000 per year for fuel. Now they are paying N1.5 million per year. Some people said solar from N1.5 million to N2 million was to expensive.

@Butoneday prices of back up power equipment will go up but not too much, prices of renewable energy equipment are dropping, the only reason why it will shoot up will be because suppliers will try to cash in on this advantage like very one else, (also increase in shipping cost), if you can call off there bluff, you should be good, if transport used to cost N2000 now will cost N4500, realistically speaking the price only increased by N2500 it should not increase by let's say N5000, the removal of fuel subsidy just gives all suppliers excuses to charge rocket prices,

@blink 182

The answer is yes, you can run your entire building on solar, but like i explained earlier, it's alot more complicated than buying a large generator.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by pecorns: 6:54pm On Aug 18, 2011
@blink182
The answer is yes, but the question you will have to answer is does the building really use 7.5KVA (6KW) of power. It is no advise able to size your needs according to your generator size. Must generator produce excess power that is needed by the consumer. I would suggest that you perform a details energy analysis of your building. Find out the number, wattage, and number of hours of use of all the light bulbs and other electrical appliances you have in the building. This way you will know exactly how many watts you actually need.

If i was to go with your generator rating, a 7.5KVA system produces 6KW of power given that your generator has an efficiency of at least 80%. The cost for a 6KW system will be in the minimum 5-6million Naira, including all your panels, maximizer, Charge controllers batteries, inverters, mounting material and labor. If you just looking for panels, inverters, charge controller with no batteries, I believe this will cost you about 4Million Naira.

The price there is just an estimate, there are some many factors that could easily reduce or increase the price like the amount of space you have, your energy consumption, number of days of autonomy, shading analysis. All these will affect your pricing.

I you are really intreasted and the afford it, email me @ pecorns1986@gmail.com and I can help you.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by pecorns: 4:21pm On Aug 18, 2011
@Akanniade

From my calculations, you have a nominal 3360W system, using 24 panels. Why did you not use higher rated panels like 170w, 240W and 260W. For the same amount of money, you could get more power and save yourself space and money. Is there any reason why you choose 140W panel? What are your thoughts about Tigo Maximiser? If you install them you could monitor the performance of each module on your computer and increase output efficicency?

Do you mind sending me your email address? I would like to ask some questions about your entire exprience.

Thank you

Congratulations on your project. How long have you been running your system? What is the brand of your solar panels?
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by pecorns: 7:47pm On Apr 11, 2011
Whoa, the efficiency of the mppt inverters is incridble, just for discussion purposes, what is your take on micro inverters. They are on the rise here in North America and more and more hobbist are employing them against stand alone inverters, The debate on this top is very intresting as both sides are making claims for supremeacy, The truth is they both have good and bad sides. Micro inverters are more expensive than central inverters, while central inverters are less efficient if one of the panels gets blocked by shadow or has a issues from the manufacturer, the overall output of the system is reduced. Now you also have to look at the chances of that happening has well, if you go with microinverter, you can be sure to spend about $3000 more for a 10KW system than if you went with two 5000 watt central inverters. The micro inverter is the new technology, while central inverter is a well trusted and well developed technology with well know and documented draw backs. Micro Inverters also offer you the chance to buy what you need, for examples, if you go with stand alone, you have to buy a 5000w inverter for a 2300 W system, therefore you have 2800W of unused power untill you had more panels to your system, with micro inverters, you purchase one for each panel without having any excess unused power, but when you increase your system. you have to spend money on buying more inverters, while the standalone has the inverters waiting to be used.

In the aspect of Nigeria, Micro inverters will be the best option for someone with extremely limited capital as micro inverters allows the individual to only purchase what each panel requires, I am not sure if any one has used micro inverters on there system, but I sure would like to know who there system is responding,

@tpiah!
Call me  silly, if you like, all i can say is the truth hurts, and you know it, lol, people are talking about the whites, the whites built South Africa, they whites are in charge of South Africa, LOL, ask a SOUTH AFRICA WHITE MAN what Nationality he is and he will tell you he is a SOUTH AFRICAN, fine he might me racist, fact is, Whites are also South African, you are talking about the whites, LOL, there you have black people in Nigeria, the horrors we commit to one another is worse than what the white man was doing, Yes the white people hated the black and keep them in slums, atleast, the blacks in South Africa knew who was oppressing them, Nigeria on the other had, WHO can you point to for all they misery of the Nigerian people, who can you point to, for the flight of Nigerias, looking for better life outside, Who fault is all that, huh? SAY what you like, WHITE MAN BUILT SOUTH AFRICA, and the BLACK MAN as made NIGERIA a total MESS, BASICALLY, the BRITISH BUILT SOME of the little infasture we have in NIGERIA today, you comments tells me that clearly you have never travelled, but this world is a WHITE MANS world, before you argue, look at the clothes you are wearing, if it was not for the white man, you will still be runing around unclothed chasing monkeys, LOL, EVEN if it was a MOnkey that built South AFrica, or a black man built South Africa you will still complain, All of that being said, Nigeria i still love Nigeria, we have accomplished alot, and the "it go better" mind set keeps us moving, and that is the one thing you can neve take away from us, which is HOPE, Let us focus on becoming better instead of getting angry because our country is not as good as some where else, no country is perfect, neither are we,

@godspeed
firstly, i lived in South Africa for 6 years and I have been to all those cities except cape towns, I have spent nights in rural areas of mpumalanga, I have been to huge townships/slums, and I spent nights in goregous places like Umhlanga Rocks in durban, my prayer is that one day, God will bless me enough to buy you a plane ticket so you can visit south africa as well, I can always had you as a friend on facebook to show you all my photos of South Africa, I see you listed a couple of problems in South Africa, they are all 100% TRUE and 100% correct, you even forgot to say that South Africa is Corrupt which is also very true, NOW, I have one question for you, Is there HIV IN NIGERIA??IS THIS CRIME IN NIGERIA? DO WE HAVE XENOPHOBIA IN NIGERIA, ??p.s xenophobia=tribalism, I have South Africans friends and they complain to outsiders, I am not ashamed of how South AFricans are defending there country, I constantly make comments to defend Nigerians and Foreigners on www.sowetan.co.za, because of how they constantly insult us, calling us drug dealers, , and making comments like all Nigerians should be deported, and I gladly reason with them and tell them the truth about does issues, you are talking about Nigerian airports, where as of last year, the lagos international airport still had power outaged, please don't riducle yourself,

Now, you are right, Nigeria tops South Africa in couple of areas that is worth being proud of, entertainment and population, that I totally forgot to mention, but when you want to talk AGRICULTURE, you must not know your facts at all, South Africa produces way more than Nigeria, you said Natural resources, LOL, OIL is practically a curse to Nigeria, all the other 37 or 42 minerals Nigeria has only went as far as being mentioned in your text book, although, I believe one day all these minerals will help us in Nigeria, for now, let us not say we are blessed with Natural rescources that have not help us in any ways, someone mentioned the Nigerian military, while our foot soliders are the best in AFRICA, the South Africa Air force can them them out in a heart beat, but now all wars are won in the air, the usa lost in somalia, so I cannot really comment on that, one of the things you said you are proud of is that Nigeria telecommunication industry as grown to be the biggest in Africa, how is that an achievement, it just common sense, 150 million people, mean 150 million clients, there is no thinking about that, yes, we have come a long way and we are getting better, not unless we can produce and make our own cellphone, we will be always consumers, let us not jump to number 1 position overnight please,

Thanks George D for your honest opinion. I saw a comment you made a long time ago about the comparision between generators and solar panels. I am not sure what your background in school was in but you certainly know alot about engineering economics. Solar panels in my opinion are for people who want constant electricity 24/7. People who want electricity for short time duration during the day will find a generator most economical. To make solar panels affordable, I am trying to see if i can partner with a credit lending company for individuals. The problem with that is, people who qualify for this amount of loans can basically buy this unit cash if they wanted, but i am looking at the idea of people who can offer 30% down payment and pay off the rest of the amount over 3 to 5 year period. Still this option is not for the common man, so inshort, solar panels are not meant for the average man in Nigeria, sad, but it just the reality.
Nairaland GeneralRe: Solar Energy: Uses And Importance by pecorns: 7:13pm On Mar 09, 2011
Please do not take what i am about to say wrongly, A long time ago,I heard a story that people complained in Nigeria to the then Minister of Transport that plane ticket price was too expensive. In return the Minister replied by saying flying was not meant for poor people. I do not know how true the story is, but I can say one thing,even in countries where electricity is cheap, some people cannot still afford to pay there bills. I understand that it is expensive. An average Nigerian cannot afford 550K. But, in my opinion, we are talking about not paying for electricity for the next 25 years. If you can afford a generator and pay fuel for it on a weekly basis, you certainly can afford to pay 550K for a solar panel system. One of the main difficult i have found out with solar business in Nigeria is that people's lives have been designed to get used to not having electricity, people do not know what it feels like not having to think about if electricity is available or not. I understand fully that the price is alot, but you pay for what you get, nothing is cheap in this world. The systems are for complete off grid individuals that want constant electricity 24hours a day electricity with no noise and a peace of mind(which is rare). There is no need to brand the packages as too expensive, rather say I cannot afford it and think of ways of making it affordable for yourself(like getting a loan) instead of saying the packages are to expensive.

I will rather return them back to Sharp and get my cost money back, instead of going thru the trouble of having to supply people at give away prices, I will lose some money cause of shipping but not a big deal, it's still better then selling at a loss, to people who don't deserve it, the panels are ideal for a street lights, most of the people are looking for home application, where they are better off going with 200W modules, in my view, a house that needs 3200W will need 40 panels 80watt panels while you can achieve the same thing with just 13 panels rated at 235W. At my cost, 1.5M, at that price, i will include two Morningstar TriStar MPPT 60A for free, the only problem, it will take about 6-8weeks to arrive and I expect the entire 1.5M the day you get the panels, no stories,
