THE FORCE THAT SEEKS TO REDEFINE AFRICA'S POLITICS AND IMPROVED LEADERSHIP. -Dogara Unyem Çæsär High moral principles and professional standards for truth and transparency is uncommon with some world leaders and most importantly our own ‘African Kings’. It is important to note that to lead is to direct and influence the people, but the ideals for leadership and power have been abused by leaders in the past which led to the invasion of nations that govern with absolute dictatorship such as Iraq, Libya, Syria, amongst others. Recalling the Arab Spring that swept part of the middle east and north African states remains crucial towards changing the narrative that many leaders have done their best, and have done so well for their people but have fallen due to lack of freedom in their leadership styles. The Arab spring gave a clearer understanding that Human dignity, mutual respect for individual or systems and simple sensitivity are necessary ingredients for a stable society and nation. (Yusuf J. Gandu. The Arab Spring: Kaduna, 2012) It is indeed rear to point out African leaders that claim to practice the so called ‘democracy’ diligently and according to their respective federal constitution without manipulating the system for personal interests. We have had leaders amending the constitution over and over again so as to stay in power, whereas when it becomes required of them to go, they influence the electoral process to field in a successor. The case for Nigeria’s Olusegun Obasanjo and the third term agenda in 2007 speaks clearly of that. In Egypt, the Mubarak sons were poised to succeed their father Hosni Mubarak who had been president for three decades since the assassination of President Anwar el-Sadat in 1981. And Just of recent, the 2018 revolution in Zimbabwe whereas first lady Grace Mugabe was keen to take over from the 93 years old leader who had been in charge for too long Until the armed forces resolved to kick him out. A nation isn’t a private enterprise, Is it? By comparing and contrasting, one can easily say that only a few African states are consistent in democracy whereas others only claim to run a democratic government, however, others do not practice real and transparent democracy. With the likes of Botswana (oldest and most stable democracy on the continent according to “face2faceAfrica.com”), Senegal, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia… followed by the likes of Ghana, South Africa, Nigeria. Seen as the most consistent democracies following constant transition of power. (Mark Babatunde, FaceToFaceAfrica: Dec 2016). Conversely, likes of Yoweri Museveni who took power in 1986 and for the next three decades he has been in charge of Uganda, Paul Kagame who became president in 1996 and still in charge of Rwanda until date. President Denis Sassou is no any different, by the time his current tenure expires in 2021 he will be clocking 36 years as president of Congo. And so on with same likes of Paul Biya (Cameroon), Omar al-Bashar (Sudan), Idriss Deby (Chad). This is indeed proving of how leaders especially those of the third world fail to exhibit high democratic values. In Nigeria, during the buildup to the 2015 general elections, there were projections within and abroad that this will be a new era of change with Muhammadu Buhari as head of government taking yet another shot of the Presidency since 2003 and of course labelled as one with so much “integrity”. Three years later, Nigeria is not in any way a better country than it was with insecurity at its highest level since the civil war. The 75 years old president who assured the electorates of running for only a single term, he’s declared to run for re-election amidst unstable health and most importantly, an extremely poor performance with regards to the economy not to mention disregard for the rule of law. Furthermore, I believe that Africa expects more from leaders. The continent needs a new species of leaders that live, speak, walk and talk AFRICA! Samora Michel is gone, Thomas Sankara is gone, Kwame Nkrumah, Jomo Kenyatta, Gamal Abdul Nasser of Egypt gone. These were leaders who made sacrifices for a modern Africa to emerge. Personally, I am not against Presidents being in power for too long… I am only against being in power for too long and with nothing to show for. Jomo Kenyatta was a bit reluctant in giving up power but was able to pursue a pro-western, Anti-communist economic philosophy and foreign policy, also oversaw his country’s admission to the UN. In the case of Kwame Nkrumah, He championed the Organization of African Unity (OAU) which later became African Union (AU), not only was he outspoken on the advocacy for Pan-Africanism, he assisted and contributed towards the independence of some African states governed by colonial rule to unite as “United States of Africa”. (HowAfrica, https://howafrica.com/ 2016) In conclusion, the force that seeks to redefine African politics and improved leadership is by moving beyond the divide between the old and the new ways and trying to find new solutions to political problems. Gone are the days of Azikiwe of Africa and the others who struggled to build a foundation of what we all stand on today. There must be a paradigm shift in the approach to governance. The younger generation should be able to create brighter solutions. While the aim here is not to call for a revolution, the truth remains that Africa has gone beyond being led by older and tyrannical leaders. Asides staying too long in office, they have turned their countries into private businesses whereas family and friends run a government with no room for opposition parties or groups. The world must be free, therefore custodians of “Freedom and Good Governance” must hand it over back to the people even if against their interests. -Dogara Unyem Caesar writes from Kaduna state, Nigeria -Nigeria Youth Project (NYP) dogara.ud01@gmail.com +2347019975766 |
Let me say here that Sen Makarfi is a very sound personality whose health status isn’t hidden but very glaring for all to see .You can’t accused Sen Makarfi for been selective in dealing with issues ,he is far above favoritism. Sen Makarfi does not yield to religious pressure before he thinks neither is he in any fora called or seen as a fanatic ,no-wonder he is seen as the only credible alternative for 2019 Presidential election. Why not Sen Makarfi for President 2019 & Not Others. Sen Makarfi was a two term governor of Kaduna state and Senator. He was invited by the PDP leaders to head the party and restore sanity to it following the failure to elect a new leadership in Port Harcourt. Sen Makarfi 62, showed maturity in handling the crisis that heralded his tenure leading up to the Supreme Court. After the Supreme Court verdict that validated his position, the former Kaduna governor worked with the leaders and governors in the party to not only to put measures in place to elect new leaders, but also woo those who left to other parties, back to PDP. It is claimed in some quarters that because of the way he handled party affairs, some governors and leaders will help secure the presidential ticket to Sen Makarfi, assumably. Sen Makarfi major strength is the fact that he trusts the PDP and the party faithful also appear to trust him. The manner he ran the PDP during the battle with Ali Modu Sheriff for the soul of the party has endeared him to many of its faithful and beyond and that's include the Nigerian Youth. Makarfi has fulfilled his own part of branding ,reshaping, rebuilding and repositioning the PDP and it is now left for the governors and party supporters to fulfill theirs by ensuring he picks the presidential ticket. It is not going to be difficult for them to do that if they chose to. Sen Makarfi does not also appear to have “excess baggage” that will be of concern to PDP faithful. He is not undergoing trial unlike Mr. Lamido and he is perceived as a corrupt person unlike Mr. Abubakar.People who don’t know Sen Makarfi will say his major weaknesses is the feeling that he has been battling an illness which allegedly could affect his performance as governor of Kaduna state but he successfully executed the contract he had with the people of of Kaduna state ,even though no human being that can’t be faced with health challenges when it comes. Sen Makarfi , have a solid structure within and outside the PDP that will work for his interest and confront a formidable candidate like Mr, Buhari . IBRAHIM DANKWAMBO One of Mr. Dankwambo’s major weaknesses is his “aloofness” when it comes to national issues. He is hardly known to stand for anything because he scarcely lends his voice to any matter. For instance, he was hardly seen or heard during the recent turbulent days of the party. It is therefore difficult for Nigerians to know what to expect from his presidency. Another weakness of Mr. Dankwambo is his ability to confront a formidable APC candidate like Mr. Buhari and defeat him if the latter choses to run for second term. ATIKU ABUBAKAR Mr. Abubakar’s major weakness is his desperation to be president. Many Nigerians believe he is desperate to be president, pointing to his defections from one party to another all in a bid to be on the ballot on election day. Another weakness of the Waziri is the apparent lack or collapse of his political structures across the country. Mr. Abubakar inherited the leadership of the once formidable political group, the Peoples Democratic Movement, PDM, from the late Shehu Yar’adua. Out of the 18 political groups that formed the PDP in 1998 the PDM was the biggest. It used to boast of a strong structure across all the political units in the country. Not anymore! PDM has since gone into oblivion apparently due to lack of leadership. Also, despite his posture, many Nigerians accuse Mr. Abubakar of being hugely corrupt and fear he will run a corrupt government. Another problem for the Waziri Adamawa is his inability to get widespread acceptance across the length and breadth of the north, unlike Mr. Buhari, who might be his major opponent, if both win the primaries. Mr. Abubakar also appears not to be enjoying the support of PDP governors, a critical group within the party. In fact, should he fail to get the support of PDP governors, he might as well kiss his ambition bye. This assertion is based on the history of the internal politics of the PDP and what just transpired at the elective national convention of the party held last December 9. SULE LAMIDO: Mr. Lamido’s major challenge is his ongoing corruption trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. The PDP will be wary of fielding a candidate facing trial and have the potential of going to jail before, during or after the 2019 election. The former Jigawa governor also appears “too independent” and will be “his own man” if he becomes president. PDP leaders are known to prefer presidents they can control. Tanimu Turaki The former minister is not so well known across the nation compared to other contenders. Anyone seeking to be president in 2019 need not have to first tell most Nigerians who he is. Also, while his membership of the Jonathan loyalists in PDP is a strength, it could also be a weakness because there are many in the PDP who still hold the former president personally responsible for the defeat of the PDP in 2015. Those in this category may not be comfortable with this choice as the party’s flag bearer. “The political landscape is just been defined but no course to worry. Though noise making is part of politics but it’s not the determining factor. Also it’s not how early you start but how well you end… Am optimistic that it will be well at all levels. Cheers”-Sen. Ahmed Makarfi 07/02/18

Legislative Invasion Is A despotic Attack On Our Fledging Democracy - Kaduna Ex-Deputy Speaker A former Speaker of Kaduna state House of Assembly, Dr Matoh Dogara has described the invasion of Senate as an attack on Nigeria's democracy. The former deputy speaker made this known in a statement in Kaduna personally signed by him in Kaduna on Saturday. The statement reads; "A Country such as Nigeria with protracted military gangsterism knows that the Legislature out of the three ARMS of government is usually the worst hit and relegated. Therefore frantic efforts should not be spared in meaningfully developing this very important arm of government. Whereas our electorates may condone and term the everyday skirmishes in our political experimentation as "Learning the rudiments of democracy" after long spell of military rulership, but certainly when it degenerates to divesting the hallowed chambers its symbol of authority. If we are committed to seeing our democracy grow to international best standard, this ignoble act must be condemned strongly by all Nigerians and lovers of democracy all over the world. The condemnation should transcend political affiliation, religious inclination and ethnic consideration. After all, an injury to one is an injury to all and any dent or injury to our fledging Democracy is catastrophic and challenge on our collective sacrifices. It is barbaric and an insult on the legislative institution worldwide. It is appalling to hear that sponsored thugs invaded Nigeria parliamentary building not to chant songs against the non performing government over the spate of killings in Nigeria but to disappear with the Mace which is an integral part of the symbol of democracy anywhere in the world! This is just a further clarifications that some persons who got the mandates of our electorates lack the quintessential to sit in the hallow chamber and begin to churn out laws for the good governance of this country. The action of the Senator, Omo-Agege from Delta State is a confirmation that APC has not done sufficient work before handing such misguided, ill-mannered and selfish politicians its tickets to represent her at that pedestal of national responsibility. How could thugs have the enfontry to enter into our National Assembly complex before they perfected their perfidious act of causing and instill fears into the mind of innocents citizens and sending a very damaging picture of the Country to the whole world? This is unwarranted. I will urged that the circumstances leading to this political imbroglio should be urgently and properly investigated so that those found culpable would be made to face the wrought of the law. With due respect to the efficiency of our security operatives, I stand bold to say I smelt undue connivance with the security agencies because I can not imagined how foreign agents gained access to the upper chamber and successfully carried out their evil intention without the expected fierce rebuff of the security operatives stationed at the complex against such intrusions? The security agents should take some blames for this disgraceful, negligent and careless act which has portrayed our parliament as an institution in very bad light".

TonyeBarcanista:Liar, you are a typical politician |
TonyeBarcanista:How much did you guys share? You guys doing PDP aren't different from APC |
This is a welcome development |
Contrary to the fact that observers and commentators of the Nigerian Political environment do have opinions that differs.. one can hardly deny the fact the Senator Ahmed Makarfi who was a two term Governor, two term Senator of the federal republic and immediate past chairman of the People’s Democratic Party of Nigeria is a Simple down to earth politician, a bridge builder, Philanthropist, a detribalised Nigerian, Man of peace, a unifying figure and an extremely honourable personality who is viewed as a political gladiator not only in Kaduna state, but the entire nation and beyond. At a time like this when Nigerians are so desperate and eager to Change the change and to kick out a government that had brought lies, hardship, hunger, insecurity and injustice to the nation. Senator Makarfi is however considered as one of the few credible and trusted leaders with the capabilities of turning things around if given the opportunity to take charge of the affairs of a dying Nigeria. There is no dispute that his achievements in Kaduna state and performance with the PDP as chairman all speaks greatly of him. In trying to assess the Makarfi candidacy, one must first compare and contrast the oppositon PDP alongside other Presidential hopefuls with regards to the 2019 electioneering. Although so many points Makarfi to be the right candidate, following the zoning arrangements to the North by the party.. there seems to be Indications that interested candidates such as Sule Lamido, Atiku Abubakar, Ibrahim Shekarau amongst others will definitely not give up the party’s flag on easy grounds and will therefore compete fearlessly to get at their ambitions. In as much as the People’s Democratic Party is working hard to reclaim power and save the nation, Party will choose to go for a candidate who is sellable, very well accepted by the electorates and can match President Buhari’s popularity in the North. But for a man who is excellent in Political diplomacy and saviour that brought back a dying PDP to life… Will a Makarfi candidacy be sufficient and all that is needed to dislodge the rulling APC in 2019? Hate him or Love him, to be rational or otherwise, Sen.Makarfi remains a candidate with clean records and had so far so great delivered essential governance wherever he found himself to serve. He’s been a loyal party faithful in good and in bad times, under the sunshine and the heavy rain, he had made sacrifices and contributed his all towards the growth and progress of his party the PDP. However, as time approaches, we all expect to see a change of game play and the delegates will have to decide democratically without any interfering factors on who is best to fly the party’s flag during the primary elections prior to the 2019 general elections.
