Well, as a scientist, I can only tell you such high yields are obtainable here. There is nothing they are doing over there that we cannot do here and achieve similar results. But let's leave the discussion at this point.
No wahala. Good to know

I get many of these info online. So many resources: mostly from universities in USA

By the way, I also plant maize (before someone will come here and insult me by calling me internet farmer angry)
Hahahahahahaha

I feel you. But certainly, what applies in the US will not apply here in Nigeria, abi? Farming techniques (mechanisation, etc) I can accept but the seed in particular should also matter. The other thing I heard is that some farmers don’t buy the right seed out here and don’t apply the right amount of fertiliser

Huh, 1 ton/ha! shocked That must've been like one century ago!

Nigeria's average is about 2 tons/ha.

However, right here in this same Nigeria, some hit 8 tons/ha with good seeds and agronomic practices.

So, it really depends on what the farmer wants and knows. Plant maize like the pre-historic Homo habilis and you can get 100kg per hectare. Plant it like a 21st century farmer and you could even hit higher than 8 tons like they do in the Americas (USA and Chile)
Afraid catch me! Need to do more research I guess. Perhaps if you could kindly point me in the right direction, I will take it from there

My people, late on this thread but I have a serious question to ask. Been told that average maize yield is about 1 ton per hectare!! Can someone please confirm thishuh

Rochas is a scammer, it wasn't given for free and the vehicles was just 300 in numbers, at a price of #1m each and you are expected to be making #10k returns every week consistently till the one million is completed.

However the beneficiaries are saying the vehicles were just refurbished and in not more than six months it will be broken due to wear and tear.

.... So, who's fooling who?
All we do is just complain, complain, and complain. If that is not enough we criticise, and continue to criticise even more! Na wa for una!!

About 4 tonnes per hectare.
Please ignore previous post/typo. Yield/potential for Oba Super 98 is 7-8 tons according to the suppliers. Could you please kindly let us know how you got your results? Thanks

Apologies, but yield/potential for Oba Super 98 is 7-8 tons according to the suppliers. Could you please kindly let us know how how you got your results? Thanks

I planted Oba Super 6 earlier. Now trying Pioneer and SC 719
Thanks. If you don't mind me asking, what was the yield?

There are many hybrid seeds in Nigeria that are better than Premier Seeds' Oba 2, Super 6 and 98. I think the best seed is Seedco's SC 727 and SC 719 (yield potential of 14 tonnes per hectare), Mosanto's DK 920 (potential yield of 10 tonnes per hectare) and Dupont's Pioneer Sees (potential yield of 8 to 12 tonnes per hectare). PLEASE note: Yield potential and actual yield are ALWAYS different.
Hello, which seeds do you plant?

Just get any brush mower (i attached one earlier )and you are good to go. If you can then do manual cutting through labourers... Just don't use bulldozers
Sounds like you're talking from hard-earned experience. I looked up your profile and I see you're in Abeokuta. Do you have a contact number by any chance? I may be able to source the mower attachment but I still wonder if it will be able to clear the type of vegetation we have in Nigeria.

Thanks

whatever you arrive at NEVER clear your land with bulldozer, excavator or any construction equipment.. there are specific equipment meant for land clearing
Thanks for your comments. I reckon you've probably saved me a bundle and I am so glad I came on here to ask these questions. Was already thinking of hiring a bulldozer. What type of equipment would you recommend for clearing farmland and will it be effective with trees? Perhaps there is a totally different process for trees?

Thanks once again for your comments

Happy New Year to all once again.

Been reading contributions and ideas on the side for quite some time and I must say that the amount of information on here is pretty valuable in so many ways - and information from the experts (@pamdaniel, @jovie, @hotmas911, @olayimikami) have been very helpful and insightful. Thought I'd jump in and get some information; as is always the case.

With that said, I have specific questions related to a project I am working on. In a nutshell, I just need to make sure the figures make sense and not start to build mansions in the sky. All answers would be greatly appreciated.

Questions:

- What is the average cost of clearing a hectare of land, in any of the following states; Ogun, Oyo, Kwara, and Ekiti?

- What is the average cost of herbicides? This is a very broad question since there are way too many varieties but an average cost will suffice

- What is the average cost of fertilizers?

- Where is the best place to purchase hybrid maize and soybean seeds? For this project, someone said it might be a challenge to source good seeds for 1,000 hectares and above

- What is the average cost of hybrid maize and soybean seeds?

- There are so many comments on how to plant and harvest but not so much on storage. What is the way forward with storage, especially when you have over 1,000 tons?

- Following on from the question above, any suggestions as to the best way to find bulk buyers? Especially with the feed mills, breweries, food processors, etc.?

All answers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
