The rhetoric and myriad of excuses have been endless. “How much did GEJ leave in the account ?” Why did they not build refineries? How much was crude oil then and how much is it now? How can you expect to fix 16yrs of rot in 1yr? and so on. Before I continue, for constructive argument sake, lets agree on some ground rules: 1. I want to assume that everyone contributing to this argument was at least 18yrs old in 1999 and participated in the electioneering process that brought OBJ to power then. 2. It is now common knowledge that no name divides the political scenery more than GEJ. Say anything Good about him and you are either IPOB, PDP, a sore loser, a wailing wailer, an enemy of Nigeria’s progress, a corrupt human, etc. Say anything bad about him, you are either Yoruba, zombie, etc. So, for arguments sake, we will not be talking about GEJ at all. In fact, if you like let’s say Jonathan is the worst president in the history of presidents and he is responsible for everything that has gone wrong in Nigeria in 16 of the last 17yrs. Right! Now that we have got that out of the way, let’s make some relative comparison of PDP’s first year and APC’s first year in office: 1. Forex availability: When OBJ of PDP took over power in 1999 from military, there was just $3.4billion in our forex account, Buhari on the other hand met $32 billion in the forex account 2. Crude oil price: In 1999, price of crude oil was at $25/barrel. In fact (I stand to be corrected), the highest price of oil in the first tenure of OBJ was $46/barrel in November 2002, by January 2001 it started falling back and by November 2001 it was $26. Buhari met price of crude at over $63/barrel, it then dropped to average of $30 and now hovers about $40. 3. State of the refineries: in 1999, the 3 refineries in Nigeria were at 0%, non was working at all, in 2015, the 3 refineries were working between 40% and 60% output when they were handed over, and they were in the process of being fixed. 4. Militancy: In 1999, militancy was at its peak, you couldn’t walk through the streets of Warri without raising your hands up the creeks were no go areas, expatriates were basically chased out of this country with kidnapping, murder, etc. Things were so bad that at a time, Obasanjo had to bring back some soldiers from Ecomog duties to come and secure the Niger Delta. Oil production output was at a point, less than 50% of our OPEC quota, drastically dropping our forex earnings. Buhari on the other hand have not had to deal with any militancy issues at all. Debt profile: In 1999, thanks to IBB’s recklessness, Nigeria was indebted to everybody; world bank, IMF, Paris club, etc. we were overwhelmed with debts, but today, our debt profile is so low that even if we borrow the entire 6trillion naira to service our budget, we still won’t be in the red. “Years of rot”: PDP came into power after 39yrs of “rot”, APC only have 16yrs of “rot”. Subsidy regime: In 1999, Nigeria was subsidizing everything; petrol, kerosene, diesel, drugs, etc. Today, apart from drugs like anti-retroviral and child vaccines, Nigeria is not subsidizing anything. In fact in the 2016 budget, even the vaccines and essential dugs subsidy have been canceled. Now, how did they both fare with what they got and the prevailing environment they found themselves? I can tell you that as of April 2000, Forex was readily available for overseas education, medical tourism and vacation, fuel importation and subsidy payments, importation of raw materials and machinery, OBJ was able to grow the economy, clear our debts and left $64 billion in our forex account after 8 yrs. He increased minimum wage the very first year, he implemented the 13% derivation and even attempted to raise it to 17% for Niger Delta states. Price of goods did not quadruple. Today, needless to say, prices of commodities have skyrocketed, no fuel, no more forex for school fees, medical tourism and vacations. refineries have been shut down, jobs are being lost, we are heading straight for a double dip recession and worse, there is still no specific blue print as to how we will get out of the current situation. OBJ had every right to complain and every reason to fail. No one really expected anything from him, he actually had nothing to work with and a more volatile country, yet without uttering a word, he got to work and did his best. yes, a list of mistakes were made along the way and corruption was a hindering factor, but he put things down and all saw the direction of his government and the economy. Compared to what OBJ met, Buhari met heaven, yet all we hear is ”price of crude oil”, vandalism, corruption is fighting back, no money in the forex account, blame PDP for 16yrs of mismanagement, etc, and nothing on ground to show that this government is looking forward. In fact everything we have seen, especially the 2016 budget show we are heading back to a 1983 without Idiagbon. Ironically, OBJ is very close to Buhari and is now a part of this APC government, but it seems he can’t get to Buhari. OBJ’s style was to tell the ministers, to get the policies while he implements, but now, it seems the ministers are waiting for Buhari to give them policies to go and implement, that’s why the future scares me. Buhari can’t be all in all. He has to give the ministers free hand and full support to work after all he took 6 months to source them. Buhari cannot be flying around the world and preparing policies at same time. This is why I am really scared of the coming 3yrs. This is a country and not a chess board where you keep people in suspense till end game management, he has to carry people along. Fasten your seatbelts folks, at this rate, the ride will be far bumpier than originally expected Finally, Buhari’s excuses and the excuses of his media champions and supporters are extremely flimsy at best and just won’t cut it anymore. OBJ has proven that even with 10% of what we have now, we can be comfortable, so the current failures of this government has nothing to do with what he met but all to do with silly errors and cluelessness of the leadership as well as the ineffectiveness of the ministers. Trying to shift the blame is just a slap on our common sensibilities.
