The story of Enron, its rise and its fall, is a far history to many but the memory of what played out during the period will linger for years to come. The fall of the once “most admired” company in the USA came as a big surprise to many who thought that nothing could sink the great Titanic Ship – but it sank anyway!

When Ken Lay (late CEO of Enron Corp) employed the duo of Jeff Skilling and Andy Fastow, everything seemed perfect. Within a short period, Jeff was made the CEO and Fastow, CFO. These people were later known as the SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM. Jeff, in order to surpass the market figures, initiated drastic and cruel measures so as to motivate (or intimidate) employees in meeting company set targets – either by hook or crook. Two of such measures were the RANK and YANK and “Mark-to-Mark” figures. In RANK and YANK, the employees are rated based on their performance every month and the last 15% are sacked – straight SACK! The result? Every employee decided to use every [im]possible means to meet the damn company target while undermining (or sinking) the company by all means. Gradually, the rut of corruption, shylockism and deadly means crept into the Enron Corp. Jeff, Ken and Fastow sucked the company until the Titanic sank gradually in 2001/2002. Senior managers, who saw the fall coming, helped themselves to the loot. And that was the end of Enron Corp – a multi-billion dollar oil and gas, energy company. Jeff was sentenced to 25yrs, Ken died of heart attack and Fastow is now an office clerk after serving 6yrs imprisonment.

The story plays out on a daily basis in most Nigerian companies – especially private corporations. The managers intimidate, mandate and use all sorts of ways to manipulate employees into corporate “slavery.” The results? The Enron Way! When banks began with their unrealistic targets for their marketers (as they still do), the rate of bank failures and frauds increased – most especially, in the so-called new generation banks. The managers of these organisations believe in getting results by threats, intimidations. Sure, they get the results but they get the WRONG RESULTS that sinks companies. And where are those bank CEO’s?

Corporate existence depends on employees and SMART Plan. Employees are the first point of contact between the company and their clients/customers. If employees work under duress, the customers will feel it and move on. If the employees enjoy themselves, it will reflect in the customers’ attitude – simple. If a company has a staff turnover of more than 30% within 2 years, it is a red flag – danger. It simply reflects the inefficiency of the oga@thetop. Unfortunately, too many companies in Nigeria are proud of staff turnovers of 120% in a year – and they wonder why things are not just moving fine for them….I wonder too!

Employees are neither slaves nor animals. They are humans and they have feelings too. Psychologically, few can be motivated by threat. Threat does not work with everybody and it is a no-no for abusive languages. Equip yourself with Emotional Intelligence as a manager and you are bound to reap the fruit of having those wonderful people called employees. Fail to master Emotional Intelligence and you are setting yourself up for a big failure –either now or in the nearest future.
